ABUAD, United Nigeria Airlines sign MoU on students’ industrial training

Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) to provide structured industrial training for engineering students of the institution.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the MoU, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, said the partnership will bring the university and airline together to provide practical, hands-on, and globally competitive education.

Olarinde noted that under the agreement, about 20 final-year students of ABUAD’s College of Engineering would annually undergo robust and hands-on training in aeronautical and aerospace engineering through the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme at the airline.

She said that the collaboration, designed to run for a renewable period of 10 years at no financial cost to the university, fosters a long-term investment in human capital development, skills transfer, and the grooming of a new generation of Nigerian aerospace professionals.

He added that the airline’s decision to commence flight operations into Ado-Ekiti in December 2025 had fulfilled an age-long aspiration of the university’s Founder, Afe Babalola (SAN), for air connectivity to the town, describing the development as a demonstration of faith in ABUAD students.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of the United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, said that the airline was honoured to partner ABUAD, stressing that merit, excellence, and shared values informed the collaboration.

He noted that strong nations thrive on close ties between political leadership and intellectual institutions, urging Nigerian leaders to leverage universities for solutions to national challenges.

Okonkwo said that the airline regarded the partnership as part of its broader social responsibility and commitment to practical education that delivers value beyond certificates.

He added that graduates of ABUAD had continued to distinguish themselves, describing the university as an institution that had exceeded expectations.

The Founder of ABUAD, Chief Babalola, who described education as the bedrock of national development, thanked United Nigeria Airlines for formalising the partnership with the university.

Babalola said the MoU would contribute significantly to manpower development in Nigeria’s aviation and engineering sectors and commended Okonkwo for his professional achievements and support for educational advancement.

  • United Nigeria Airlines names aircraft after Rawlings, starts Lagos–Accra, Abuja–Accra routes

United Nigeria Airlines names aircraft after Rawlings, starts Lagos–Accra, Abuja–Accra routes

In recognition of the Pan-African ideals and influence of former Ghanaian President, Jerry John Rawlings in the integration of West Coast of Africa, Nigeria’s airline – United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has unveiled an aircraft in his name and announced the commencement of direct commercial flights on the Lagos–Accra and Abuja–Accra routes.

The Chairman of the airline and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Obiora Okonkwo disclosed this in Abuja during an arrival and departure mock exercise of the route at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

He said the naming of the aircraft after Rawlings aligns with the airline’s commitment to African unity and regional aviation leadership, adding that members of the Rawlings family will attend the formal unveiling ceremony of the aircraft in Accra on Monday.

The former Anambra governorship aspirant, noted that having created impact in the domestic operation, the new routes is to position the airline as a strong player in the West African aviation industry.

To actualise this, Okonkwo said that the airline is expanding its fleet with six aircraft over the next few months — a move he said will deepen aviation access within ECOWAS, boost people-to-people exchange, support trade flows and provide Nigerian travellers homegrown options instead of relying almost exclusively on foreign carriers that currently dominate regional routes.

Expressing confidence on the viability of the new routes, Okonkwo estimated that more than 200,000 passengers fly the Lagos–Accra corridor yearly, stressing that even before UNA’s maiden flight, market response was already visible.

“Before we announced Accra operations, only one airline was doing Abuja–Accra direct. Just by our entry, fares dropped almost 50 percent. That is the value of Nigerian participation,” he said.

He also stressed that Nigerian aviation safety standards meet some of the highest benchmarks globally, with pilots re-certifying every six months — compared to the 12-month cycle in Europe and the United States.

However, he expressed concern over Nigeria’s heavy aviation tax structure, describing the country as “one of the most over-taxed aviation jurisdictions in Africa”. While Ghana’s passenger service charge at international terminals is $60, Nigeria’s stands at $100. On a Lagos–Accra return ticket, he said, taxes alone can exceed $116 before other surcharges, creating high fares that passengers regularly complain about.

Okonkwo then urged government to reduce tax pressures and provide single-window aviation financing to accelerate growth. “There is no trillion-dollar economy without flight connectivity,” he said. “Aviation is the enabler — if people cannot move, commerce cannot expand.”

He said: “This is in keeping our promise to go global as quickly as we can. These are things that we have lined up as part of our objectives that have been a little delayed by the turbulence in the country that we are seeing especially in the aviation sector in the last two to three years. We can be delayed, but can’t be stopped.

“We understand the challenges that this is coming with, but with over 50,000 agents in 200 countries with the capacity to buy our tickets, it means we have more seats to sell. We need to increase our inventory.

“We have good news for you. By this time next year, we would have increased our capacity by over 2,000 per cent. From October to November this year, we will be inducting into our fleet not less than four big body aircraft and from February to April next year, we are adding six Boeing 737-800NG into our fleet.”

“We know it has been very challenging, but we are not less determined, we are not giving up, we will continue to do our best and continue to count on the public, hoping that they will understand what we do to make things better.”

Also, Dr. Olayiwola Dare, Vice President, Sabre Travel Central and West Africa, assured that the company would supply to the airline quality IT solution to enhance its performance.

Dare explained that through the integration, UNA would benefit in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the travel industry, stressing that this would serve the customers better, help the travel agencies to sell in a better way and assist the travellers with the right experience in the industry.

He added: “In Sabre, we are very much committed to ensure that our technical capability is well-implemented with United Nigeria as we do for other airlines globally.

“Also, we have a very big market place with over 200 countries currently and over 50,000 travel agencies globally working on our platform and this will put United Nigeria in that platform and accessible to all travel agencies globally and all those travel management companies like Shell, Chevron, Total and other big firms, irrespective of your location throughout the world. United Nigeria is going to be accessible.”

Besides, Mr. Robert Brian, Director, Africa and Europe, Sabre Corporation, lauded the UNA team for adopting the technology.

He said with this, the company would integrate the airline to the rest of the world.

  • Airlines intensify acquisitions to optimise yuletide traffic

Airlines intensify acquisitions to optimise yuletide traffic

Domestic carriers are intensifying their drive for aircraft acquisition as part of  strategies  to gain market dominance as the projected surge in passenger traffic for the yuletide season beckons in a few weeks.

The new move by the carriers : United Nigeria Airlines, Air Peace, Xejet Airlines, NG Eagle Airlines , Rano Air, Ibom Air, Overland Airways  and other carriers , experts say, is part of strategies to  ensure availability of seats in the cabin, where many operators are facing capacity challenges.

Investigations by The Nation reveal that while it is increasingly becoming expensive to utilise high fuel consuming airplanes, such as Boeing and Airbus models, indigenous carriers are now opting for regional, middle range equipment including Bombardier CRJs and Embraer Regional jets.

Besides the prohibitive costs of maintaining big airplanes , the skyrocketing costs of putting such planes in the sky is forcing operations to opt for small, fuel-efficient, more environmentally friendly airplanes.

Among the carriers that have intensified expansion of their fleet include United Nigeria Airlines, which recently took delivery of some Embraer 190 regional jets .

The carrier said it will acquire six of the aircraft models before the second quarter of next year to bolster its operations.

Speaking in an interview, its Chairman / Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, said the airplanes acquired under the damp lease arrangement will position the carrier for the year end flight operations.

Besides, United Nigeria Airlines, state – run carrier – Ibom Air , last week acquired two Bombardier CRJ airplanes to boost its operations.

With about nine aircraft in its fleet, the carrier is consolidating its hold in the market.

Increasing aircraft fleet, experts say, will enable any airline to focus on schedule reliability, on-time departures, and excellent service.

Speaking on the development , Ibom Air’s Chief Executive Officer , Mr. Mfon Udom emphasised the importance of the  acquisition for the airline’s operations.

He said : “We are delighted to welcome these two new CRJ 900 aircraft to our fleet. With this addition, Ibom Air now operates a total of nine aircraft, including two Airbus A220-300s and seven CRJ 900s.

“Still, we are not resting because to become a serious scheduled carrier, we need to keep growing our fleet. And so we eagerly await the deliveries of our nine remaining Airbus A220-300s from Airbus in the next  three  years.

“Their addition will bring more capacity to Ibom Air’s service offerings, facilitating better connectivity and reliability for travelers.”

Overland Airways , which operates between Lagos / Abuja and other secondary airports, recently acquired  two Embraer 175 regional jets.

The aircraft are part of the three airplanes ordered by the airline to service its routes.

Though air fares have spiked on the triangular routes :   Lagos / Abuja, Port Harcourt / Kano and allied routes, a new entrant – XeJets Airlines has introduced a new strategy to remain a dominant player in the market.

Investigations reveal a new entrant – Xejets Airlines has unveiled a regional jet offering 104 all – economy cabins to alter the stakes by reducing air fares as well as broadening access to air travel.

Besides, the airline also unveiled an express service – all – business class cabin to retain the upper end of the market offering premium services.

Speaking on the development, an official of the carrier said : “ Moreover, this service retains XEJet’s luxury standards while providing a quality option for economy passengers, broadening access to air travel.

“ . Our Premium service enhances convenience while reaffirming our commitment to quality and excellence in aviation for all passengers. We are bringing premium service into the commercial aviation world to elevate the travel experience for our customers.

“. We will continue to push boundaries to meet the needs of our customers while prioritizing safety in all aspects of our operations. With a strong history of innovation and a clear focus on the future, we are at the forefront of change in aviation.”

Experts say the new arrangement will force down fares.

Air Peace on its part, sources said it  has concluded plans to dry lease four airplanes to boost its operations as well as change market dynamics for end of year flight operations.

Experts say aircraft type, fare structure and reliability of schedule are likely factors to change the market dynamics.

At the weekend , Air Peace  sealed  a strategic agreement to dry-lease four Boeing 737-800 aircraft from Slovak carrier AirExplore for the yuletide  season.

The move, sources familiar with the development said is part of Air Peace’s  effort to enhance its domestic operations out of its main hub in Lagos.

The carrier, it was learnt  aims  to cater to the increased demand expected during the bustling yuletide period.

According to the agreement, the dry-leasing arrangement will see AirExplore, a subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group (ASG), supply pilots for the aircraft, while Air Peace will provide cabin crew who are currently on training program for the task.

Sources say the carrier’s burgeoning  fleet will consolidate its ambitious expansion plans as its options for aircraft acquisition continue to  highlight its commitment to adaptability and growth.

Speaking on the development, an industry expert, who pleaded not be named in print said : “ The dry-lease agreement is a strategic move that sets Air Peace up for operational success. By efficiently managing its fleet, enhancing passenger experience, and preparing for peak demand, these aircraft will undoubtedly contribute to smoother operations.

Experts agree that the aviation sector in Nigeria experiences significant fluctuations in passenger numbers, particularly during peak seasons , such as the yuletide.

He said : “ The decision to expand the fleet with four additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft is a proactive move to meet this surge.Airlines  must  plan for seasonal shifts in demand by expanding capacity ahead of time to avoid disruptions and maintain service reliability.”

Investigations reveal that NG Eagle Airlines and Rano Air , which are major players in the northern part of the country, could  change the market dynamics with increasing fleet and reliability of schedule.

The temporary absence of Max Air and Azman Air from scheduled operations, could trigger higher fares on routes where they dominated.

Experts say the recently signed protocol on leasing by the Federal Government will open a window for domestic carriers to have cheaper and convenient access for aircraft acquisition.

Speaking on the development, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo said : “ Issues about to access aircraft leasing and financing is under focus as the government is utilising every opportunity to assist our local carriers.”

Speaking on the efforts by the government to fix challenges affecting indigenous carriers, Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema  said with the recent bold steps put in place, accessing aircraft leasing is now easier.

He said  indigenous operators could now access dry leasing of airplanes at a ridiculously lower rate compared to direct purchase of the equipment.

Onyema said :” Keyamo’s decision has been in the best overall industry interest especially recent efforts to make it easier for Nigerian carriers to dry lease airplanes. As much as the operator meets the specifications set by lessors, it is a lot convenient to explore the inherent opportunities instead of direct purchase of aircraft.”

Yuletide: United Nigeria Airlines to connect Kano, Southeast

The chairman of United Nigeria Airline (UNA), Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has assured that flights from Kano to the South East states will commence before the Christmas season to afford travelers faster ease of movement.

He gave this assurance on Wednesday in response to the request of the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, who urged him to open up routes between Kano and the South East when he led the management team of the airline to pay a courtesy visit to the palace.

The Emir said he is confident that the addition of Kano to UNA’s destinations will further help the development of the economy of the state.

He commended Prof. Obiora for keeping to his promise that the airline would commence Kano operations before the end of the year, saying that it shows he has integrity.

“When Prof. Obiora came here some months ago, he promised me that he will ensure that United Nigeria begins its Kano operations and today, he has fulfilled that promise. This is how you know someone who has integrity. When you make a promise, you keep it and I am very happy this promise has come to fruition.  The tradition of being a commercial center is well known and I hope that with the addition of Kano to the routes, it will be a catalyst for more development. You are assured of my continued support and my hope is that there would be flights to link Kano to the South East states where we have a huge population of Igbos. Given the long standing relationship between Kano and the South East, if a route is open between Kano and the South East, it would further boost economic development in the region and in Kano as well,” he said.

Responding to the Emir’s request, Prof. Obiora expressed his gratitude for the support the palace has given the airline since its inception and promised that there would be flights from Kano to the South East to enable ease of movement for the festive season. The airline currently operates to Anambra, Enugu and Owerri.

The Emir then commended the Azman Group President who is also the President of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Abdulmunaf Sarina, who he said helped in facilitating the visit and has shown solidarity to other airlines.

“Some months ago, the Azman chairman came here with the chairman of Air Peace and Prof. Okonkwo and he has been a source of support to them. I am happy that there is no rivalry between them, rather what we see is collaboration and healthy competition which is great for the aviation industry,” the Emir said.

Meanwhile, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described the inaugural flight of United Nigeria Airline (UNA) into the City of the Caliphate as  historic.

The traditional ruler and the governor joined UNA’s inaugural flight to Sokoto from Abuja on onboard its Airbus A320-200 aircraft after which he received the airline’s team led by its chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, at his palace.

Speaking during the courtesy visit, the Sultan expressed joy at the decision of the airline to commence Sokoto operations, revealing that he has known Prof. Okonkwo for many years and when he wanted to start the airline, he informed him (the Sultan) and received his blessings.

He promised that the palace would support the airline in anyway possible to succeed in its operations to the state and anywhere else. He regretted the aviation industry in Nigeria was faced with enormous challenges and commended the airline for weathering the storm. According to the Sultan, the plan to link Abuja with Sokoto started about eight months ago and expressed delight that the dream had become a reality.

He said: “United Nigeria Airlines is most welcomed to fly to Sokoto. Obiora told me about this plan eight months ago. I am happy that it has become a reality today. We need to open Sokoto to more airlines and connect more routes from here.

“The business environment is very tight in Nigeria and you have to be strong to remain in business and I know Okonkwo is very strong, having been in politics and I know that the experience he gathered there will spur him on. This is the first time I am flying with any inaugural flight in this country and you did this. If there are challenges you are facing in the sector, please feel free to tell me. May you continue to fly higher, successfully and safety.”

After the visit to the Sultan’s palace, Prof. Okonkwo led his team to the government house where he was received by the governor. While speaking, the governor revealed that he has to suspend all his official engagements in Abuja to receive the airline’s management team.
