Flooding: UI to get TETFund support

University of Ibadan (UI) will get support and quick intervention from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), following flooding that has affected hostels.

It will be recalled that flood a few days ago affected Awo Hostel where about 16 rooms on the ground floor of the hostels were submerged, with students’ belongings floating on water.

Speaking during a visit to the institution, Mr. Sunday Adepoju, representative of Southwest on the board of TETFund, who led agency delegation to the university, said TETFund as an intervention and proactive organisation decided to visit the areas, having thought it wise not to wait till disaster happened, adding that the agency could not leave the lives of students and residents of the institution community in danger.

He said: “We have seen the effect of the flood, but it wasn’t as much as it was reported in the media. We have seen what has happened, we know what to do to avert future occurrence at the hostel and adjoining areas.

“Although our funds are allocated to institutions, as a representative of Southwest on the board, we will address the issue because we can’t wait for it to happen, as it happened in Borno State.’’

  • Parents reject accommodation fee hike at UI

Majority of  parents at a stakeholders meeting held on Tuesday to discuss the new fee  regime introduced by the University of Ibadan ( UI ) rejected the  N30,000 hostel accommodation proposal.

According to our correspondent  the management had called the  meeting over what it called “slight increment”  for halls of residence and the Alexander hall  for  students of  the College of Medicine.

The institution’s Senate  had recommended a hike in hostel accommodation fee from N14, 000 to N30,000 for  students on the  main campus and N40,000 for those in the College of Medicine effective from the 2017/2018 session.

The premier institution said that it currently spends about N100million every year in providing hostel accommodation, arguing that this  was no longer sustainable

Majority of the parents in their separate remarks, however,  said while  they were not objecting to increment due to the current economic realities, the proposal by the institution was unacceptable.

Mr Fashina Olusegun, a parent,  said  while upgrading facilities as being canvassed by the institution  was  good , the new fee regime was high.

Also speaking,  Merssers  Robert Obiora, Ayo Akinyemi and Michael Odunrounmbi, agreed that while tertiary education was being underfunded,  the university management must ensure that its fees were affordable.

Some students in a peaceful protest at the hall also asked the management to reconsider its recommendations.

The Vice Chancellor of the university,  Prof. Idowu Olayinka,  had earlier stated that the institution  “is at a point where it is difficult to continue to subsidise  the running of the halls of residence and carry out some other academic functions.’’

“This cannot be feasible without a slight adjustment in accommodation charges and in some fees  items payable by students in some faculties,’’ he said.

He said only the increase in  accommodation fee  affected all students who desire to stay in the halls of  residence, adding that  “residency in the halls of residence is optional.’’

Olayinka  said only 8, 222 bed spaces were available for the over 27,000 students,  adding that the university is not fully residential. .

“The hostel accommodation is for the first and final year students,” he said.

Prof. Omoniyi Adewoye, a former Vice Chancellor of the university and Chairman of the forum,  said university education  could not  be free if there was to be a turnaround in the education sector.

He, however, urged the parents to critically analyse the situation with a view to appreciating the  justification for the increment.

  • Nigeria has best statisticians in the world – official

Nigeria has best statisticians in the world – official

An official of the Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA), Dr Olusanya Olubusoye, says Nigeria has one of the best crops of highly respected statisticians in the world.

Olubusoye, the 2nd Vice President of NSA, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

The official said that the association would be showcasing some of its best brains at the NSA forthcoming international conference.

The conference, slated from Sept. 6th to 8th at the University of Lagos, will focus on the theme “Positioning National Statistical System for Data Revolution and Inclusive Development”.

He said statisticians from other countries would be learning from their counterparts in the country at the conference.

“We have so much to learn from them but in terms of training, they can also learn from us.

“We have one of the best crops of highly respected statisticians in the world.

“We have some of them in the country and some abroad; some of them will be giving lectures in their areas of specialisation at the conference.

“For instance, University of Ibadan (UI) is one of the special training centres on statistics in Africa.

“We have only three institutions on the continent designated as special training centres and one of them is UI,’’ the official said.

The official said that the association would also be learning from some statistical associations, institutions and bodies in Africa and abroad.

“We need to learn from others on how they support their statistical associations to have a vibrant way of producing official statistics.

“We need to learn the way they promote statistical education, the way they encourage policy makers to use quality statistics for evidence-based decision rather than personal opinion, political interest and other mundane considerations.’’

He said that the Lagos State Government, through its Bureau of Statistics, would partner with NSA, saying the conference would remain indelible in the history of the country and the association.

He said that the association chose to partner with Lagos State because it operated a knowledge-based economy.

“It is one of the states that is run with evidence-based policies process. They have high regard for data and that is why things seem to be getting better in Lagos.

“ We are collaborating with the state and encouraging it to showcase how they have been using data to make life meaningful and better for the people of Lagos state,’’ the official said.

Olubusoye said that the association had already inaugurated the Young Statisticians of Nigeria (YSNaija) as a wing of the association.

YSNaija consists of those studying statistics at undergraduate, Masters to Post-doctoral levels and those who graduated in the last five years or more working in statistics-related areas.

“ We have been trying to mobilise the early career statisticians to form a very formidable group that can also contribute to nation’s building.

“ We know that in terms of statistical development, we are still growing, so for us to have a very promising future, the earlier career statisticians have a role to play.

“We are trying to link them up with their counterparts in other countries such as statisticians in South Africa and the International Statistical institute,’’ he said.

According to him, statistics is a discipline that globally every age group, from young to adult, is considered to be critical unit and it usually mobilises the citizenries.

“The groups are coordinated not only by UN, they are also mobilised at the continental level. They are mobilised at the National level, that is what we are already doing now.’’

The Vice Chancellor asked them to take a cue from the newly-elected President of France, Emmanuel Macron, who rose to presidency from a humble beginning.

“Instead of involving in Aluta all the times, always consider how you can make significant impact in nation building, to propel the country to economic prosperity.

“Be a global student who is relevant by assisting to achieve sustainable development in the country,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that six universities participated in the debate on ‘Charting Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Youth Agenda’.

ASUU commences one-week warning strike in UI

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) Chapter, has declared a one-week warning strike over illegal pension deductions, fractional salary payments and non-payment of supervision allowance.

The decision was taken on Tuesday at a congress convened by the union and presided over by its Chairman, Dr Deji Omole.

The report says members also complained over excessive deductions in their March salaries.

The management of the university was also alleged to have failed to declare the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) profile of the university.

According to Omole, the warning strike is, therefore, to compel the university administration to address the issues which ASUU said bordered on the welfare of her members who are being owed since 2010.

“The congress of ASUU, UNIBADAN, at its meeting of 4th April, 2017, having received permission from the national body of the union, hereby, declare a one-week warning strike.

“The warning strike will commence from 12:01 midnight of Tuesday, 4th April, to 12:00 midnight of Tuesday, 11th April, 2017.

“The congress of the union maintains that the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily resolve all the issues, will force the union to proceed on a comprehensive and total strike,” said Omole.

The congress, which was well attended, was also addressed by the national delegates of ASUU, which included Professors Mahmood Lawan, from Kano; Tony Monye-Emina, from Benin and Bebe Sese, from Port Harcourt.

The union had in a congress resolution in March warned the university management to address its grievances, bordering on reversal of illicit deductions and non-payment of promotion arrears.

The three non-academic staff unions of the institution had also been on strike  since March 13, grounding administrative activities in the institution.
