Don advocates better women’s representation in public administration

To address gender inequality in Nigeria’s public service, the 2010 alumni of the Department of Political Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG), held a high-level colloquium in honour of Prof. Maryam Omolara Quadri, the department’s first female professor and head.

The event, themed: “Female Representation in Nigeria’s Public Administration: Prospects and Challenges,” convened thought leaders, scholars and students at the department’s conference room to spotlight the persistent underrepresentation of women in governance and senior management roles.

In his welcome address, Chairman of the planning committee, Opeoluwa Taiwo described Prof. Quadri as a remarkable figure who embodies the essence of scholarship, leadership and inspiration.

According to him, Prof. Quadri is a mentor whose influence goes beyond the academia.

Taiwo stressed that Nigeria’s public administration landscape presents a daunting picture for aspiring women. The path to vertical advancement is filled with obstacles that seem insurmountable, and the damaging narrative that “this arena is not for women’ continues to echo, hindering the aspirations of capable female leaders.

“This unfortunate reality extends into the academic realm of Political Science as an academic field, and in its subfield Public Administration, where the gender gap remains significantly high. Hence, the reason for theme.”

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, Head of the Department of Mass Communication stressed the need for Nigeria to enforce a minimum 30% gender quota across all sectors.

She called for urgent reforms that tackle sociocultural and institutional policies that hinder women’s participation in politics and governance.

Guest speaker, Dr. Tosin Adesile cited data from government and civil society reports indicating that women remain vastly underrepresented especially in senior leadership positions. He urged policymakers to foster inclusive work environments and restructure recruitment and promotion processes to close the gender gap.

The event featured a panel discussion, presentation of a citation to Prof. Quadri and a special gift ceremony in recognition of her trailblazing academic leadership.

The following day,  students tuned in virtually for the Mental Health Awareness Webinar, themed:  “Navigating Adulthood: Building Your Future While Prioritising Your Mental Health”.

According to the Director of Projects and Programmes, Winifred Umoren, this theme was chosen because they recognised how easy it is for young people to neglect their mental well-being in the course of making a life for themselves.

She said it aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, which emphasises the importance of promoting mental health for all.

The session featured experienced mental health professionals, including Dr. Kareem Abigail Abidemi, a lecturer in the Faculty of Education, UNILAG, and Adelore Aisha, clinical psychologist at MANI. It addressed the emotional and mental challenges young adults face, providing guidance, coping mechanisms, and how to manage them in today’s fast-paced world.

The momentum continued  with the much-anticipated Inter-Faculty Debate, where representatives from various faculties engaged in critical discourse on Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Learning. The debate provided a platform for students to showcase their analytical skills and oratory prowess, while tackling one of the most pressing topics in global education today.

  • Firm partners varsities to train 10, 000 project managers in five years

Firm partners varsities to train 10, 000 project managers in five years

The management of Castingcrown Company (3C) has set machinery in motion to build the skill sets of at least 10, 0000 undergrads and young professionals across multiple disciplines in 20 selected universities in the country.

Giving this hint was Dr. Gbolahan Pearl Oyelakin; he spoke at the train-the-trainer programme for staff of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in Lagos, at the weekend.

Justifying the need for the skill acquisition and training, Oyelakin, who himself is a United Nations certified project manager and sustainability expert, said there is a dearth of project management experts in the country, which is a critical skillset inevitable in the 21st century at the world at large.

According to him, Casting Crown Company in conjunction with University of Lagos Faculty of Engineering presents a Train-the-trainer programme for staff of the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

This is a critical step planned towards the actualization of empowering 10,000 students in selected Nigerian universities with project management skills, Green Building EDGE certification and sustainability management skills and building information modeling skills for the next five years, he said.

“We have a vision and that’s to empower 10,000 students and young professionals in the next five years. That’s our target. We want to empower them with project management skills, building information modeling skills and also sustainability tools.”

Pressed further, Oyelakin said, “The reason for that is we discovered that in the professional industry, most of the students, when they come out to practice as young professionals, usually don’t have what it takes to solve problems. I’m talking about wicked problems now. So right from when they’re on campus, it’s good for them to acquire skills that will enable them to be problem solvers in the industry. And we noticed that critical skills that they need to acquire for them to solve problems include project management and also building information modeling tools. And of course, because of the need for us to also push the agenda of the United Nations in mitigating the impact of climate change, that’s why we’re also including sustainability measures into it. And we have adopted the EDGE programme, you know, as a sustainability tool that we’re going to use to equip the students in orientating them towards environmental behaviors that they need to acquire when they’re practicing.

“We have mapped out 20 universities and Unilag is going to be the first here in Nigeria. So we’re going to work. And what that means is we have a quota of 2,500 for each of these universities, you know, scaled up to the actual amount that we’re looking at for us to be able to impact the students. And what that means is in the next five years, we’re going to have a new breed of equipped and industry-made, ready-made professionals, young professionals that are going to disrupt the way things are done in the industry and facilitate project success and ensure new streams of value that will be delivered in the industry.”

Expatiating, Oyelakin who said revealed in one of four faculties adept with EDGE project in the entire country admitted that there is indeed a gap in the space.

“We have EDGE experts, and we have EDGE auditors, and we have EDGE faculties. So I said in the whole of Nigeria, at the level of faculty, we’re just only four and that is why I decided to move out with my team for us to be able to equip students because it’s better to catch them young. So EDGE has a programme for students, and that is the design for greater efficiency. So it’s also a pathway for them to grow when they leave campus and they start practicing and now become EDGE experts like me. So I want to catch them young right from campus before they move into the industry.”

On the modalities to adopt, he said, his team would be working with partners. “We’re going to be working with the Project Management Institute, for instance. We’re going to be working with the World Bank International Finance Corporation (IFC) because they own the program themselves. So we’re going to be working with some other BIM companies like Microsoft, Oracle. So we are speaking out to reach, we’re going to reach out to these organisations to partner with us, Microsoft, to partner with us for us to be able to equip these people. So yes, we are open to support, but this is going to be delivered to the student free of charge while we prepare them for the exam.”

Speaking at separate interviews, the duo of Profs Modupe Moronke-Omirin, Dean of Environmental Sciences, and Samson Adeosun, Dean Faculty of Engineering, both in the University of Lagos, acknowledged that building the skillsets of students and lecturers alike was of necessity in order to make them globally competitive.

Firing the first salvo, Prof. Omirin said, “We talk about being a future-ready university, training our students to also have the necessary skills and the capacity to compete out there in the world out there. So the training we’ve had sort of opens our vista to see all the opportunities that are out there. And I’m very impressed by what Casting Crowns has done, because this is a very selfless and extremely progressive effort on their part to bring to us what it would be useful for us to have to train our students excellently so that they can be really, really relevant in the world.

Echoing similar sentiments, Prof. Adeosun said the training is meant to inculcate the skill of project management. “Whatever project you are doing, you must have in mind that it should reduce climate effects. We know the issue of climate change is rampant now. The issue of climate impact has to do with what we do, the project we are doing, the effects on the environment and the consequences on the climate and people in the nation. So if you have that source key from project management, it will enhance your global competitiveness. You are not going to be a local person, you will become an international person.”

  • ‘How to restore sanctity of ballot box’

Former Dean, Faculty of Social Science, University of Lagos, Prof. Lai Olurode has said that Nigeria’s political system is witnessing haemorrhage. He attributed the crisis to voter apathy, disinterestedness in the political and electoral process, low voter turnout, vote buying, protracted legal tussles, stark transactions in freedom and electoral violence.

Olurode also identified diverse electoral mythologies and malpractices, rapacious money culture, factions within political parties, generalised breakdown in party discipline, oligarchical tendency and absence of consensus building in the electoral process as factors responsible for the haemorrhage.

The university don, who spoke at the launch of a book. The Bisi Akande Phenomenon in Lagos, said to avert the unfolding trend and reduce cost of elections, there is need to ‘revive our embedded cultural and  ethical assets and deploy them more in the  service of our electoral process both at the front and back end’.

He added: “Rather than pointedly and frankly addressing these challenges as deriving from the failure and absence of strong ideological roots at party formation stage, drowning of dissenting voices within the party structure and absence of elite consensus in SW, they are being approached primarily from the monetary angle. Even then, the rage has not abated. The truth is that an average voter is becoming more confident, resilient and rebellious with the increasing deployment of technology in the electoral process,” he said.

According to him, between 2015 and 2019, the total votes cast in the Northeast and Northcentral increased but Southwest suffered a decline. He recalled that in this year’s general elections, Southwest recorded the highest percentage of rejected and wasted votes and that voter turnout was 34 per cent in the region in 2015 whereas it was 50 per cent in Northwest.

Olurode said: “In 2019, it was 27 per cent in Southwest but 44 per cent in Northwest; Southwest figure was far lower than those of Northcentral, Northeast and Northwest. Thus vote bleeding is severest in the Southwest. Fringe political parties had a noticeable outing in SW. Yet, in the market place of politics, votes are the main negotiating instruments.”

He, however, recalled that Pa Bisi Akande expended less than N100,000 in his election as Governor of Osun State in 1999, noting that it cannot be said that money answereth all things political.

Olurode said the future of Nigeria’s democratisation process should be anchored on a strong ethical foundation in the context of internal democracy, if robust participation by the people is to be induced in place of peripheral engagement with the electoral process.

He added: “My message to Southwest leaders is to plough more ethical assets to drive the electoral process and thereby terminate political bleeding. Unfortunately and sadly though, ethical voices have become greatly diminished. Yet, without strong foundations in cultural and ethical assets, a country’s development is doomed,” Prof. Olurode warned.

  • Ex Ogun governor underscores entrepreneurship

Former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has appealed to youths to remain focused and be tenacious in pursuing their dreams and entrepreneurship ideas, adding that fortune only favours the brave.

Daniel spoke at the third annual Young Leaders Entrepreneurship Conference (YOLEC) organised by Sparklight Entrepreneurship Show which held at the Afe Babalola Hall, University of Lagos.

The event tagged: ‘An entrepreneurial mindset: A solution to the high unemployment rate in Nigeria’ brought together hundreds of students, youth corps members, and unemployed graduates within and outside the university system.

It featured a seminar, breakout sessions, CV Review, mentoring session and sessions on digital skills and technologies like data science and analytics, cyber-security, cloud computing, block chain.

Daniel, who praised the organiser for putting the event together, mentored youths on the importance of leadership training and how youths could be financially independent as entrepreneurs.

“Above all, if you look at the lives of successful entrepreneurs in the world, there is one thing that’s common to them all- perseverance. None of them gave up at any point in time,” he added.

He noted that challenges and obstacles will always come but successful entrepreneurs are people who never give, but are rather tenacious in achieving their dreams.

Earlier, a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration and Acting Director, Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre, University of Lagos, Dr. Sunday Adebisi, said the University of Lagos has turned all its courses to entrepreneurship.

He said:”We have started to support entrepreneurship ideas among the students and provide the needed institutional support to grow those ideas. Our desire is to create as many Mark Zukerbrg in UNILAG,” he said.

He, however, stressed the need to create an eco-system that will make entrepreneurship to thrive in Nigeria as the rising spate of unemployment is mind blogging.

He said Nigeria is the second country with the highest rate of unemployment in Africa with over 46 million active citizens unemployed or underemployed.

He called for a national entrepreneurship policies that would guide and give the youths the impetus that their ideas and aspiration are been supported.

“We need an entrepreneurship starts up bank that will provides soft loans with less encumbrance for five years. This will help to develop the skills ideas and accelerate its benefits within a short period of time because the eco system is favourable,” he said.
