  • UNN don gives inaugural lecture on oral drug delivery

A professor of Pharmacy at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Kenneth Ofokansi, has said more potent oral drugs have been invented in the last three decades.

Ofokansi these advanced drugs were made in forms, such as tablets, capsules, sachets, suspensions, emulsions and solutions. He added that they were superior to the conventional oral dosage forms.

Presenting the 140th inaugural lecture of the University of Nigeria titled “Breaking the Barriers to Effective Peroral Drug Delivery”, inside the Princess Alexandra auditorium, Nsukka,  the university don, who is the chairman of the Senate ceremonials committee of UNN, ssaid in the last four and half decades,  peroral drug delivery has undergone unprecedented changes.

“This transition has been mainly driven by the increased understanding of pharmaceutical and biological constraints at the molecular / atomic level, increased generation of drug candidates and emergence of several advanced technologies.”

Ofokansi said this area made significant technological advances, not only in drug delivery aspects but also in fabrication technologies, adding that it was  anticipated that trends would bring the much-awaited revolution in the delivery of therapeutic agents, particularly biotechnology-based molecules.

He added that the purpose of any drug delivery system was to enhance or facilitate the action of therapeutic compounds, stressing that it should now be apparent that conventional drug delivery systems were associated with a number of limitations which can reduce drug efficacy.

He also enjoined other well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians to call on governments to fund  specialised reference laboratories in  universities.

He paid glowing tribute to his late father, Chief Gabriel Ozoekwe Ofokansi, for laying a solid foundation for him and his mother, Mrs. Cecilia Mbanugo Ofokansi. He thanked his mother’s brother, Christopher Ogbonnia Anijah, who trained him and his brother, Dr. Uchenna Ofokansi. He also praised his wife, Nneoma, for her love, prayers and understanding.

While appreciating the vice chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Chukwuma Ozumba, for believing in him, Prof. Ofokansi also praised the managing director of Miral Pharm Ltd, Lagos, Mr. Onyeka Micah Onyeibor, Ejike Ugwoke, Dozie Ikegbuna, Francis Edozie, Nnamdi Okoye, Chibuike Onwusoba and Chukwuma Ugezu for their support.

The vice chancellor, Prof. Chukwuma Ozumba, re-affirmed the commitment of management to continue to invest in research and expressed joy that UNN was now ranked as the best university in Nigeria.

The traditional ruler of Nando, Anambra State, Igwe Chinedu Nwakonuche and members of Umuriam clan of Agbudu village, Nando and members of the university community were among guests who graced the historic occasion.

  • UNN alumni award scholarship, build N20m facility for alma mater

Determined to give back to the society and their alma mater, the 1997 class of medical doctors of the college of medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, have reunited after 20 years of graduation.

The reunion, which took place inside the Dentistry hall of the college of medicine, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State, was not all about fun and celebration.

This is because members of the 1997 class used the occasion to inaugurate a modern students’ refectory worth N20m and awarded scholarship to 3 brilliant medical students of the University of Nigeria.

Each of the 3 students, Onyishi Uchenna, Enebeli Gratus and John Steven, would collect N100,000 for every semester for their school fees and upkeep. The students were officially presented by the scholarship committee, comprising Dr. Chima Oti, Dr. Obinna Anikwe and Dr. Esther Okafor.

Addressing the gathering, spokesman of the group and Dean Student Affairs, at the college of medicine, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Dr. George Ugwu, said the 1997 class had set out to not only to make history but to impact positively on society, adding that the construction of a modern students refectory and the award of scholarship to three medical students were just the beginning of many things to come.

Ugwu, explained that the group embarked on the two projects as their contribution to join the vice chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba in expanding the University of Nigeria.

He expressed joy that the University has been ranked first in the South East while the medical school has now gone international, following the recent endorsement of collaboration with the famous Gallily Medical College in Israel.

In a joint statement presented at the occasion, the chairman of the Re-Union Committee, Dr. Kelechi Okoli and chairman of the local organising committee, Dr. Anazo Madu, commended the University administration for the  progress recorded so far, adding that the institution was better now than it was 20 years ago. They, however, noted that the University could still be better than it is at the moment.

Responding, the vice chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Chukwuma Ozumba, said that the institution had witnessed massive improvement in infrastructure, staff training and research since his appointment more than four years ago.

Ozumba stated that since the University was founded by Dr. Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, he, who is also Benjamin, must follow his dream and ensure that the citadel of learning becomes the best on the continent.

While praising the 1997 class of medical doctors for being the first to build a structure in the University, the vice chancellor described the dean of Student Affairs, Dr. George Ugwu, as a brilliant and enterprising young man endowed with incredible leadership qualities.

The provost of the college of medicine, Prof. Uchenna Nwagha, his deputy, Prof. Bond Anyaehie and the dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Prof. Felix Chukwuneke, were among the personalities who attended the historic event.

Highlight of the occasion was the inauguration of the multi-million naira students Refectory by the vice chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba.

  • UNN commends NUC ranking of universities

UNN commends NUC ranking of universities

Dr Chidi Onyia, SERVICOM Officer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) on Wednesday commended the National universities’ Commission for its current ranking of Nigerian universities.

The commission’s latest ranking of best 50 universities in the country placed the UNN at the 14th position.

Reacting to the exercise, Onyia told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka, Enugu State, that the assessment would ginger the institutions to improve on their performance and service delivery.

According to him, UNN has put faculties in place to improve the position of the university in the next NUC ranking

The officer said the national SERVICOM team visited the university last year at the peak of an ongoing transformation programme to reposition the institution.

He said with the massive transformation in the university now, UNN would come between the first and third positions in the next ranking.

“All the classrooms now in UNN have electronic smart boards. Students now log in to Internet in any part of the campus because of quality ICT facilities.

“Eating centres, student hostels, bank services, water reticulation and course registration used for the ranking have all received a facelift after the team’s last visit,” he said.

Onyia said that the ranking was not actually conducted by the NUC but by the SERVICOM office in the Presidency.

He noted that efforts by SERVICOM to ensure quality service delivery by government agencies in the country was a welcome development

“The establishment of SERVICOM is good as everybody needed quality service in the country.

“But the team should know that UNN was built 50 years ago, its facilities may not be as modern as some universities built six or 10 years ago,” he said.

He said that the administration of Prof. Bartho Okolo, the current Vice-Chancellor, had started preparing for the next visit.

“Dean of faculties, faculty officers, heads of departments, who are members of SERVICOM committee have started rubbing minds on how to ensure that required facilities were on ground before the team’s visit to UNN this year.

“Students should not feel disappointed on the ranking as the management is working round the clock to get better position by the next ranking.

“The management will not relent on its effort in making UNN the best in Nigeria and Africa in general.

“I am optimistic that by next time the team will come, UNN will not only meet the bench marks, but will exceed it,” he assured.
