    Taraba monarch, son killed by unknown gunmen

    • Gov orders investigation

    The traditional ruler of Chanchanji in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, Alhaji Tanimu Kumbiya, and his son, Yusuf, were murdered by unknown assailants on Takum-Chanchanji Road late Friday.

    According to reports, the traditional ruler and his son were returning from a funeral in Takum when they met their untimely death.

    Expressing his shock over the incident, Taraba State governor, Agbu Kefas, has ordered the arrest of the perpetrators of the “heinous act”.

    In a statement by his Spokesman Emmanuel Bello, the governor expressed his condolence to the people of Takum and Chanchanji and sued for calm from the people, promising to “rid the state of all acts of lawlessness and brigandage”.

    The statement reads: “Taraba State governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has received with deep sadness the news of the death of the Gara of Chanchagi, HRH, Alhaji Tanimu Kunbiya and his son, Yusuf, Friday evening.

    “Governor Kefas described as tragic the manner in which the late revered monarch was hacked down on their way from a funeral event in Takum.

    “The governor has since ordered the security agents to immediately investigate the circumstances and go after the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

    “He said everyone involved must be brought to justice as soon as possible.

    “The governor, while suing for calm from Takum residents, said he would leave no stone unturned to fetch out the criminals and bring them to justice in the shortest time possible.

    “He stressed that the era of banditry and criminality has ended with all the strong security measures the administration is taking.”

    Also, the Tiv Cultural and Social Association, Taraba State, has expressed its “shock and sadness” over the murder of their monarch.

    A statement signed by the President General of the association, Chief James Baka, called on the government to investigate the murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.

    While condemning acts of criminality, the association have acknowledged the existing peaceful co-existence between the Tiv and other ethnic groups in Takum and called on the governor to deploy security forces to the volatile area.

    The statement reads: “We call on the government and security agencies to diligently investigate this murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.

    “As a people, we are deeply saddened and concerned by this event. We urge everyone to remain calm and allow the security agencies to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

    “We unequivocally condemn any act of criminality and will never associate with criminal elements.

    “We appeal to His Excellency, Dr. Agbu Kefas, the Governor of Taraba State, to deploy security forces to calm the rising tension in the area.

    “The Tiv people of Takum have long coexisted peacefully with the Chamba and Jukun communities in the area. Never before have we witnessed such a grievous incident.

    “We are committed to maintaining this harmonious relationship and stand united against any act of violence that threatens our collective peace.”

    Yet-to-be identified gunmen have reportedly killed an ex-player of Enyimba International Football Club of Aba identified as Christian Jacob in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State.

    Jacob was said to have been killed at Ogbor Hill axis, off the heart of Enyimba city.

    While there have been several accounts to the killing, as events leading to his death remain unclear at the time of filing the report, it was learnt that the gunmen, after shooting him, made away with his cell phone, some cash  and other valuables.

    Our reporter gathered that the body of the ex-footballer was later deposited in a nearby mortuary located off Umuola junction by Ogbor Hill.

    According to friends to the ex-footballer who would not want their names on print, the deceased, after playing with some overseas clubs, established a football academy where raw football talents were harnessed and linked with agents before his untimely death.

    Sources from the security agencies have it that investigation into the matter has commenced.

    In another development, a mechanic, identified as Ngozi Alozie, was said to have been kidnapped along Opobo road in Aba.

    The gunmen were said to have seized the mechanic as he was driving home in a Toyota Sienna belonging to one of his customers at about 8pm.

    The gunmen also reportedly shot his apprentice in the leg and threw him out of the bus and sped off.

    The apprentice is said to be receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital in the city.

    Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, who confirmed the incident, stated that policemen later recovered the Sienna bus at Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area of the state. Ogbonna disclosed that another vehicle abandoned by the gunmen was also recovered.

  • Gunmen shoot Taraba NUT Chairman

    Taraba State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Peter Julius, has been shot by unknown gunmen.

    Police said he was shot in Garin Dogo village of Lau local government area.

    Police spokesperson, David Misal, described the gun assault as “an assassination attempt on the life of the union leader.”

    Misal, an ASP, told reporters that Julius is in a critical condition, receiving treatment at the specialist hospital in Jalingo -the Taraba State capital.

    Misal disclosed that the NUT chairman was with three other relatives before his attackers opened fire on their moving vehicle.

    The police command said it is investigating the attack to punish the perpetrators.

    “We received the report of assassination attempt on Mr. Peter Julius who is the state chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Taraba state.

    “As we speak, he is receiving treatment at the specialist hospital in Jalingo. He sustained gunshot injuries after his assailants opened fire on his moving car.

    “We are currently trying to establish the rationale behind the attack. We have gone all out to make sure we bring the perpetrators of the act to book.

    “Let me use this medium to call on members of the public who may have useful information to come forth with it, while we assure the good people of the state of our unrelenting commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the people at all times, especially during this Yuletide season,” Misal said.

  • Unknown gunmen assassinate Idah poly director

    The Director of Works at the Federal Polytechnic Idah, Kogi State, Solomon Ayegba Sani, has been reportedly killed by yet unknown persons.

    He was allegedly shot around 10 pm on Tuesday, at his residence in Idah, Idah local government area.

    The victim was gathered was recently promoted to the position of Director of Works by the institution.

    The deceased was a Charted Engineer.

    All efforts to get confirmation from the school’s management proved abortive.

    The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya however confirmed the incident, saying Sani was assassinated by unknown gunmen.

    He stated that the brother of the deceased reported the matter to the police in Idah, after gunmen invaded his residence and killed him.

    The police spokesman said that investigation has commenced, adding that the perpetrators would be brought to book.

  • Pandemonium as gunmen kill patent medicine vendor

    There was pandemonium around Abeokuta Street in the heart of Kaduna city on Monday as unknown gunmen shot and killed a patent medicine vendor.

    The Nation gathered that, the perpetrators stormed the deceased patent medicine store named as Alhaji Tajudeen Adegbite at about 8:30pm on Sunday where they took their time to take ‘snacks and soft drinks’ before shooting him.

    According to eyewitness, the late Adegbite was shot at close range but he did not die until Monday.

    “He was shot at close range and died today (Monday),” he said.

    “After taking their soft drinks and snack, they went into the patent medicine store and invited the owner, Alhaji Tajudeen Adegbite, outside and shot him.

    “The assailant jumped into a waiting car and sped off leaving the victim in the pool of his own blood.

    “Neighbours later called in the police who arrived at the scene and took Mr. Adegbite to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead,” added the eyewitness.

    The police in Kaduna confirmed the incident.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Mukhtar, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the police received a distressed call and immediately swung into action by dispatching a team to the scene of the incident.

    Mukhtar hinted that the Commissioner of Police, Austin Iwar had ordered for a massive manhunt for the killers while investigation was ingoing.

    The police spokesman said, “Our men in collaboration with neighbours took the victim to a nearby hospital but unfortunately he gave us the ghost before help could be rendered.

    “We are working round the table to ensure that the perpetrators of this gruesome act are brought to justice.  We also call on the public to help us with information to may lead to tracking down the killers.

    “But let me assure you that the Commissioner of Police, Austin Iwar, has ordered for massive manhunt to fish out the perpetrators.”

    Gunmen kill one, kidnap three in Niger village

    One person have been killed and three others kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Zazzaga Community in Munya local government area of Niger state.

    The recent attack is coming barely 72 hours after the Community paid N10 million cash to secure the release of five out of the ten members of the community who were in custody of the kidnappers.

    The rate of attacks and kidnapping in Zazzaga community has made a lot of the villagers to start relocating from the area.

    It was in the process of relocating that the kidnappers struck in the early hours of Tuesday at as they attacked those who were fleeing the village.

    The deceased, a 54 year old Musa Adamu was shot dead when he attempted to rescue the wives of his son who were among those kidnapped.

    A 60 year old Amina Mohammed was however released midway into the journey by the kidnappers who gave her their telephone numbers to give to the families of those kidnapped for possible negotiations.

    The incident was confirmed by the District Head of Zazzaga, Musa Umoru who lamented the attacks on the village and other villages by the armed men.

    “These villages are among the few villages that the people are yet to move out, people have relocated from every other village in this community in the last one month.

    “As I speak now, people are moving their properties away to neighboring villages because the government has refused to come to our aids.

    Umoru lamented that the villagers are at the mercy of these armed men because there is no adequate security provided for them, “the entire Zazzaga community with about 50 villages and a population of over 1000 inhabitants has only one police out-post with only two policemen and without a gun. They do not have any weapon to confront the kidnappers”, he said.

    Unknown gunmen on Thursday kidnapped the Deputy Registrar (Institute of Education), University of Abuja, Dr. Nura Lawal.

    Dr. Lawal was kidnapped along Kaduna- Abuja highway while returning from Katsina, his home state.

    He was kidnapped alongside his wife who later escaped from the custody of the kidnappers.

    Mrs. Lawal, who narrated her ordeal in the hands of the kidnappers to members of staff of the university, said their vehicle, a Prado jeep, was cornered off the road alongside several other vehicles that were headed to Abuja, after having being flagged down by the kidnappers near Katari, a village close to Kaduna.

    She said the kidnappers led them to a nearby bush where both their cars and belongings were taken from them at gunpoint.

    Mrs, Lawal, who said she managed to escape from the kidnappers, added that she has reported thee case to the local police station at Katari.

    She said the police told her that they were helpless about the matter.

    Mrs Lawal also confirmed that the kidnappers later made contact with her and demanded a ransom of N50m before they can release her husband.

    Meanwhile the University authorities while confirming the incident pleaded with security agencies and the Inspector General of Police to assist the institution in securing the release of Dr. Lawal.

    Deputy Registrar (information) and Spokesman of the university, Garba Waziri confirmed the kidnap of Dr. Lawal to our reporter on telephone.

    Waziri said the kidnappers has reduced the ransom to N10 million.

    He appealed to the police to facilitate the release of Dr. Lawal.

    “The kidnappers have reduced the ransom to N10 million from N50 million. The family ‎is still talking with them.

    “We appeal to the police to facilitate his release,” Mr. Waziri said.

    He added that Dr Lawal, whose promotion is due for confirmation by the university’s Governing Council  have made several contributions to the growth and development of the university especially in his position  as the Head of Administration of the  Institute of Education.

    JUSUN executives, others kidnapped in Rivers

    Unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have diverted a passenger bus with its seven occupants along Isiokpor area of Ikwerre Local Government area of Rivers state.

    The occupants reportedly include two executive officers of the state Chapter of Judiciary  Staff Union of Nigeria, (JUSUN).

    They are the Vice Chairman of the Union, Ibim Opusungi and the Secretary, Carol Tams.

    Chairman of the state chapter of the JUSUN, George Isokari, disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt, the state capital, yesterday.

    The state police command confirmed the incident.

    Isokari said the Union officers were returning from Abuja, Sunday evening, when their vehicle was diverted at Isiokpor.

    He expressed sadness on the incident and appealed on the kidnappers to release their colleagues unconditionally and unhurt.

    The Police Public Relation officer in the state, Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the Police is doing everything to ensure the victims are released as soon as possible.

    Omoni said adequate measures including increase on Police patrol team even as search party  have been deployed to the area to ensure they are rescued unhurt.

  • Unknown gunmen kill APC chieftain in Benue

    Unknown gunmen have shot and killed the organising secretary of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Gwer West Local Government Area Terwase Gugu.

    The incident occurred on Friday evening at about 7pm in NAIA town.

    Police spokesman, DSP Moses Yamu confirmed the incident and said the police have commenced investigation.

    Yamu, who described the incident as a robbery attack, said after a hot chase, the robbers abandoned their vehicle along Naka- Aondona- Taraku road and fled.

    An eyewitness Ujam Igbo told The Nation that the APC scribe was around Naka round-about when some people in a vehicle drove in and parked, while one of them came out and shot him.

    Igbo said the assailant immediately returned to their vehicle and drove away.

    Another eye witness who pleaded anonymity however said the gunmen attempted to rob a recharge card dealer in the area but the victim tried to stop them and they shot and killed him.

    Igbo described the victim as an easy-going young man who left behind a young wife and children.

    Shot Police commander dies in Delta

    The Commander of the Ughelli Area Command of Delta state police command, ACP Usman Ndanbabo, is dead.

    Ndanbabo was reported shot by yet to be unknown gunmen at about 8pm on Sunday, while driving alone in Ughelli town, headquarters of Ughelli North council area of Delta state.

    Sources had told the Nation that the police chief’s assailants shot him twice at close range; in his stomach and on his back.

    Although not much had been uncovered about the attack on him and the attackers as at Monday night when the state Commissioner of Police, Zanna Ibrahim, confirmed the attack, he said much was depending on the victim in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the incident as he was the lone witness.

    Ndanbabo, however breathed his last on Tuesday morning in one of the best equipped private hospitals in Warri.

    He was said to have undergone series of surgeries, which had earlier stabilised him.

    It was gathered that the remains of the late Area Commander has been moved to Minna, his home town in Niger State, for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the incident when contacted, noting that he died on Tuesday morning.

    Aniamaka added that the command was in deep mourning as he expressed rude shock over the demise of the senior police officer.
