    Firm unveils range of products

    McBride Research Labs (MRL), Inc., the globally renowned manufacturer of leading hair care brand, Design Essentials, in conjunction with Nigerian partners, Compass Consulting and PTF Orchards, has launched its range of products in Nigeria during a business activation event tagged “Design Essentials Launch & Consumer Awareness Day” at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    The brand also played host to reporters at a media launch as well as professional hair stylists and barbers to a technical challenge with MRL master trainers passing on skills and engaging leading salons, hairdressers, barbers and hairstylists in a nationwide cutting edge training programme.

    Speaking at the media launch, President of McBride Research Labs (MRL), Mr. Cornell McBride Jnr., explained the specific function of Design Essentials hair products which is “to infuse hair with a natural balance of vitamins and protein that promote movement and manageability”.

    He said further: “The intent is to penetrate the Nigerian market and make it a known brand in the country, thereby providing the quality of products needed by professional stylists to deliver the level of service clients demand today.”

    Mr. McBride Jnr. emphasised on the brand’s philosophy of maintaining the integrity of the professional industry by only selling its professional range through salons, which in turn generates additional profits for the salon to build on other important things that will help with rapid growth and expansion of the business.

    In her address, CEO, Compass Consulting, Mrs. Tokunbo Chiedu, reiterated the objectives of MRL, adding that their major concern as a consultancy in the trade and investment promotion space has been to facilitate the entry of brands that add value and those that serve the interests of the Nigerian market and the people’s aspirations to do better and compete with their counterparts on the global stage. “Nigerian stylists should be able to compete and also provide the same or even better quality of service as their counterparts in other countries where they have very good stylists,” Mrs. Chiedu stated.

    Genevieve unveils winner of Act the Part contest

    Eighteen-year-old aspiring actress, Bola Suru, has emerged winner of an online acting competition overseen by star actress Genevieve Nnaji. She beat two other finalists, Michael Akan and Chioma Okoye, to the prize of an exquisite makeover and VIP dinner with Genevieve, courtesy of Amstel Malta.

    The competition, Act The Part, is an activation for the Amstel Malta brand, which the actress has been contracted to promote.

    The deal had required fans to act any role from a selected movie of their choice in just two minutes and upload on the Amstel Malta website.

    Announcing Bola, a university admission-seeker, as winner of the competition, Genevieve said the wannabe exhibited undeniable acting skills which shot her to the frontline in the contest, amidst thousands of contestants who sent in videos re-enacting a role from a Nollywood movie of their choice.

    The aspiring actress could not contain her joy when she received the news. “I have practically been praying about this since I emerged one of the three finalists. My sister actually found out about the competition and encouraged me to be a part of it. I am so excited about this,” she said.

    Apart from winning the competition, hanging out with Genevieve is a dream come true for young Bola. “Genevieve inspires me so much and I really can’t wait to meet her and ask all the many questions I need answers to as it concerns acting as a career,” she said excitedly.

    Bola came tops for re-enacting a role from the movie, Broken Heart. Michael’s re-enactment of his role from the movie Ije, which features Genevieve Nnaji, earned him the second position, while Chioma came third for her role in Mirror Boy.

    Going memory lane, Genevieve said the passion displayed by the contestants reminded her of her days as an aspiring actress. “I started off my career at the age of eight, so seeing young talents very keen on what they do gives me so much pleasure because I can relate to that really well. I’m very thankful to Amstel Malta for this amazing opportunity and I look forward to meeting Bola Suru. We are definitely going to have a fun day together,” she said.

  • Oyo unveils plan to promote locally-made products

    Oyo State government,  Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and Japan  International Cooperation Authority (JAICA) are to promote agro-based locally-made products.

    The Special Adviser to the Governor on  Investment Promotion and Public Private Partnership, Mrs Folake Akinleye, spoke this at a meeting with the local government chairmen  yesterday at the conference room, Head of Service Office, Secretariat, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

    Akinleye said: ” The products to be promoted include  shear butter, tomato, black soap, cassava, melon, ofada rice,  palm product.

    “ The programme was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, which was modelled after a project similar to it in Japan where they place much priorities on products that have an advantage over the other. So,  the government decided to help the people that are working without any mechanised imput and help them grow their business, finance them and help them to market their product.”

    Pregnacare unveils products

    HEALTH conscious consumers can now benefit from the three brands of Pregnacare products, as they are now available in Nigeria. They are manufactured by Vitabiotics United Kingdom (UK).

    Consumers of Pregnacare brands are advised to look out for the security features on the pack of the Pregnacare brands. These include a registered NAFDAC numbers and a dedicated line where the secret numbers to be scratched on the pack can be sent to for immediate response.

    The manufacturers said the brands you see in the UK are also the same as the ones you find in the Nigerian market, and they are available at registered pharmaceutical shops across the nation.

    The sole franchise for marketing and distribution of the products has been granted to Medheights Pharmacy Limited.

    The imported brands are: Pregnacre Original (used during pregnancy, Pregnacare Plus Omega (used during breastfeeding), and Pregnacare Conception (used to enhance conception for women).

    Explaining the reasons for introducing the UK made brands in Nigeria, Managing Director of Medheights Pharmacy, Mr. Tunji Doherty, said: “Hitherto, what we used to have in Nigeria, were the Pregnacare brands made and packaged outside the UK.

    “Nigerians who travelled to Europe discovered that the package being sold to Nigerians was different from what was being sold in the home country where the trademark owners are. So, this knowledge started affecting negatively the psych of the consumers and sales.

    “The products were also being imported by all kinds of merchants into the market.

    “We met with the makers and raised all these concerns and the dangers therein especially as it concern faking and safe motherhood in Nigeria, and entered into business relationship to be the sole franchise owners of all the premium Pregnacare brands in Nigeria.

    “This has enabled us to structure the marketing and distribution channels. We have also secured NAFDAC numbers for the brands in order to avoid faking or cloning  and therefore, guarantees the product consumption for safe motherhood.”

    According to a pharmacist, Mr Bayo Adepoju, who spoke on the usefulness of the products to women folk, conception period is a crucial phase in a woman’s life when the body undergoes a series of changes to create a suitable environment for the sustenance and growth of the fetus.

    “Fetal health and growth depends largely upon what the mother eats and how much is available to the fetus. The incidences of congenital problems, where children end up with hole in the heart, spinabifilda, hydrocephalus among others can be significantly reduced, if not totally eliminated by taking these drugs, before, during and after conception, as at when due. They are affordable and accessible. This is what Vitabiotics UK is much concerned with as it wants to join the safe motherhood campaign of UNICEF in Nigeria,” he said.

    Teasy International Company Limited, a Mobile Money Operator licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has launched a contactless payment service named “Tap n Pay”. The product was officially unveiled in Sokoto State.

    Its Managing Director, Musa Ali Baba who spoke on the service in Abuja, said with the positive response to “Tap n Pay”, more outlets in the state will be rolled out.

    Its chief commercial officer, Mr. Agbolade Odunyemi said the service is consistent with the firm’s desire to facilitate not just financial inclusion in the state but also leverage on the huge mobile phone penetration to drive cashless commerce in the country.

    He said the country will benefit from ensuring that the cashless policy of the apex bank succeeds. “As the huge cost associated with the printing and moving of cash can be reduced significantly leveraging on the adoption of Teasy Mobile Money services; the government and CBN can also invest the savings into alternative economic projects that will impact the average Nigerian,” he said

    The Tap n Pay service allows fast payments from mobile wallets at Point of Sale (POS) when an near field communication (NFC) compatible mobile device is brought within a few centimetres of another NFC POS enabled device.

    Skye Bank unveils product to enhance e-payment

    Skye Bank Plc has unveiled innovative technology to provide  secured and more convenient direct banking solution to its customers in line with the cash-less policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    Known as SkyePLus, it was unveiled on the sideline of the lender’s Annul General Meeting (AGM)  in Lagos.

    Speaking on the occasion, its Chairman, Mr. Olatunde Ayeni, said the bank has remained leaders in the area of deploying the right technology to engender seamless and flexible banking transactions for its customers across the country.

    He said: “We deploy technology as best as we can as available, because we believe that banking today and tomorrow will continue to be dependent on technology. It is our belief that we need to deploy technology to be able to grow our economy as part of member of information and communication technology-driven global economy.

    He said the bank has been consistent in its vision to deploy the new platforms for engendering much more convenience in the banking activities for its customers. Ayeni said the process leading to the launch of SkeyPlus has been on for the past 18 months. “We will continue to make our customers enjoy the best and innovative technology means and applications that make them enjoy banking services in a more convenient and efficient way,” he said.

    Its Chief Executive Officer designate, Mr. Timothy Oguntayo, said the deployment of the new platforms was informed by the need to ensure flexibility and more convenient banking solutions for the bank’s customers using the shor message service (SMS) platform,  Internet and mobile applications. Listing the features and services of SkyePlus, Oguntayo said, “The new banking platform allows customers to check their balance and manage their account; set up standing order instructions and Direct Debits; transfer money, pay bills o people instantly; request for a new checkbook, Automated Teller machine card or bank draft; stop lost or stolen cheque and hotlist debit cards; as well as switching on text alerts to keep track of their accounts on the move.

    “He further explained that in terms of security, the bank has deployed top security measured called ‘SkyeSecure’ to enhance the security of the platform. He said: “We are fully aware of the fears which most banking customers have today, especially with the growing rate of cyber crimes and all forms of online frauds. This is why we have partnered with a global security firm to deploy SkyeSecure on our banking platform.

    “Oguntayo also maintained that, as a way of conforming to the international standard stipulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria, Skye Bank has started the process of compliance with the PCIDSS.”We’re PCI-DSS-compliant and I can tell you that we are at the appropriate stage where we should be now  and we are working with the CBN and our consultants on this and very son, we are concluding this,” he added.

    Kwara Utd unveils seven new players

    The management of Kwara United have announced the signing of seven new players to fortify the team as  the Nigeria National League (NNL) second round begins on Saturday.

    The General Manager of the team,  Haruna Maigidasanma, disclosed this on Saturday as the Afonja Warriors defeated Supreme Court 2-0 during  the week 16 encounter played at the Kwara Stadium Complex.

    He said he was happy with the performance of the team in the first round but hinted that the first round report of the technical crew shows that there is need to recruit new players in order to gain promotion at the end of the season.

    According to the GM, the players are Gabriel Peter, a defensive midfielder/ Central defender from Adamawa United, John Chukwudi, a striker from Spotlight of Katsina and Danzuru Mohammed, a winger from Adamawa United.

    Others are Central Midfielder Sambo Bobga, unattached, Oyeleke Micheal, a goalkeeper from Bendel Insurance of Benin, Muhammed Abdulafeez, forward and Ayeni David, a left fullback all from Sokoto United.

    Maigidasanma further disclosed that the club have placed six of its players on the transfer market.

    He gave the names of the players as Raphael Musa, Jimoh Oseni, Jacob Eke, Victor Ename, Wahab Haruna and Hamza Rasheed.

    He urged the fans and supporters of the club to get behind it strongly as the league enters its crucial stage and promised that the mandate given to the management would be delivered successfully.

    Samsung Electronics has unveiled its new Galaxy S5 smartphone, alongside the latest in its industry-leading wearable device line, the Gear Fit and Gear 2, in the country. The devices are already on sale at all Samsung Experience Stores and accredited dealers’ shops nationwide.

    Speaking at the event in Lagos, its Managing Director West Africa, Mr. Brovo Kim, said the Galaxy S5 will redefine how technology innovation enhances quality of life.

    “With the Galaxy S5, Samsung is going back to basics to focus on delivering capabilities that matter most to our consumers. Consumers today are on the lookout for mobile tools that inspire and support them as they improve their everyday lives. The Galaxy S5 represents an iconic design with essential and useful features that focus on delivering the ultimate smartphone on the market today through people-inspired innovation,” he said.

    The Samsung Galaxy S5 is dust proof and can be submerged in up to one metre of water for about 30 minutes.

    The device, which features a screen that is slightly larger than that of the Galaxy S4, has been described as having the “best smartphone display ever tested’ by highly-respected gadget display performance calibrators, DisplayMate.

    The Galaxy S5 offers 27 per cent improvement in display power efficiency over its predecessor, the Galaxy S4, while using 18 percent less display power.

    The highlight of the smartphone is a new fingerprint scanner, which is integrated with the device’s home button and provides consumers with a safe, biometric screen-locking feature.
