  • Pray for governors, Amaechi urges Christians

Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has urged Christians to seek the face of God and pray for political office holders to deliver the dividends of democracy.

Openning the Global Mega Prayer Quake 2013 in Port Harcourt, Amaechi said there was no need for clerics to predict danger for political office holders voted into office by the people and saddled with the responsibility of discharging good governance and rendering stewardship.

He went on: “Pray that God should do something new in our lives and keep the governors alive to lead the people, because I read in the newspapers that clergymen prophesied that two governors would die this year. But I tell you, if Nigerians know that governors are fighting for the people to improve their welfare, nobody will pray that they should die. We need your prayers to live. God will reward you through his blessings.”

Recounting his experience before he became governor in 2007, Amaechi said he is the only governor that came into office without election, as he took over the mantle of leadership through the Supreme Court judgment of October 25, 2007, which he described as the handiwork of God.

“I fasted and obtained favour through financial breakthrough to sponsor my case in court. I had no money to give my lawyers, but somebody paid N200 million into my account, and I paid my lawyers. The miracle is that I’m the only governor that came to power without election in 2007. God used me to tell the world that he is God,” he said.

“You owe a lot to the populace, you cannot keep telling them it will be better tomorrow and not do anything today, it’s very sad,” he said, urging Nigerians and the media to play their roles and expose corruption in all phases.

He said: “When we tell the truth, even if it’s for a few months, they will understand what we’re saying. We must not be scared to tell the truth no matter the circumstance.”

Some countries with lower budgets than some states in Nigeria, he said, were making steady progress because of the synergy between the government and the governed.

Okoya-Thomas relived the history of the Hall, saying it has lived up to expectation of the founding fathers.

“For many years it was left untouched and converted into a trading centre where all manners of things were sold. This is one of the historical edifices of this country. The likes of the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo and other nationalists held their political debates in this place and we must cherish and preserve this memory,” he said.

  • NCAA Director-General urges Medview Airlines on safe operations

The Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr Harold Demuren, yesterday urged the management of Medview Airlines to be conscious of safety, zero fatality and accident among airlines.

Demuren, who spoke at the inaugural flight of Medview Airlines at the new domestic Terminal Two of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, said the pursuit of air safety is the collective responsibility of the airlines, industry regulators and aeronautical service providers.

He enjoined the carrier to offer premium services that will fill the gap created since the crash of DANA Air, leading to drastic measures in the industry that have reduced the number of domestic operators.

Demurin said passengers were finding it difficult to secure seats on airlines after the steps taken to reposition the industry for profitability.

He added that the commencement of flights by Medview will offer alternatives to passengers.

Demuren said it took the NCAA a rigorous process to issue an air operator certificate to the airline, adding that the authority scrutinised the manuals to ensure that the operations would be safe.

He said the airline carried out 50 hours and 45 minutes of demonstration flights without carrying passengers to ensure the safety and competence of the airline, its aircraft and flight.

The NCAA Director-General said it took the aviation authority 18 months to look at the books of the airline before approving its operations, which he explained would reduce the burden of passengers in the sector.

The Chairman of Medview Airlines, Alhaji Muneer Bankole, solicited the cooperation of industry players to keep the airline afloat.

  • PDP urges Nigerian politicians to learn from US election

PDP urges Nigerian politicians to learn from US election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised politicians to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated by candidates in the Tuesdaty’s American presidential election.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh yesterday urged contestants in Nigerian elections to emulate the attitude of the Republican candidate, Mr. Mitt Romney in congratulating President Barack Obama the moment he realised he lost the contest.

The statement said: “The swift manner of congratulations and the graceful conduct of the defeated candidate is a shining example of patriotism and submission to the overall will of the people.

“This act is one of the elements that have made America’s democracy the envy of all nations. The greatest threat to the stability of our democracy is the reckless bickering that happens after elections in Nigeria.

“A lot of time and energy is dissipated on frivolous legal suits and the pursuit of bitterness which indeed affects valuable time for the delivery of electoral promises.

“President Obama’s constant reference to patriotism and a sense of duty to America by Americans in his acceptance speech is another lesson we must imbibe in our quest to build our democracy.

“ With this election, America has once more blazed the trail in overcoming its internal stratifications for the overall benefit of their country”.

The PDP congratulated the American people on the success of the election and expressed confidence in President Obama‘s ability to lead America out of the current economic challenges confronting the entire world.

  • Osun deputy governor urges women to join politics

Osun deputy governor urges women to join politics

The Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, has charged women in the state to rise above the primitive idea of gender discrimination and assume leadership positions, saying politics is no longer the exclusive preserve of men.

She said: “I am calling the attention of womenfolk to the need to take active interest in governance and the political processes of their immediate environment, i.e. ward levels, local governments, federal constituencies, and the State platform respectively.”

She gave the charge at the Women Participation in Politics and International Day for Rural Women Rally held at the Leisure Spring Hotel, Osogbo, Osun State capital.

Calling on women to partake in politics and to see it as a higher calling, she, however, warned that they should not see joining politics as a license for them to indulge in untoward behaviour, which she said could tarnish human character.

She said: “In politics, when character is lost, everything is lost. This rally is about sensitising women to take their rightful position in the society, and not a call to rebel, or chant war songs against timeless traditions, such as family and relational values and usages. The time has come for women in the state of Osun in particular, to rise above the primitive idea of gender discrimination.

“Politics is no longer the exclusive preserve of men. What a man can do, a woman can, and sometimes does it better.

However, to achieve our goal of equal participation in the governance processes, we need two key ingredients. First, we must be fairly educated.”

Otunba Laoye-Tomori said the implementation of the 35 percent Affirmative Action Policy about gender parity will remain elusive until the majority or every girl-child in the state is educated.

“Gladly, the Aregbesola-led administration has made this effectively possible in the state of Osun. I plead with you all; let us send our wards to school.

Economic empowerment of individual and the collectives, become easier with modest education. The focus of this rally is to join other countries of the world in the celebration of the rural women.

“Here in the State of Osun, we know the worth of our rural women and we appreciate you all. We are aware that majority of our people are farmers. It then follows that the fight against hunger and poverty, which is one of the cardinal agenda of this administration, would not have been successful without the active participation of our rural women. As we celebrate this year’s Rural Women Day, I enjoin all to take advantage of the Aregbesola-led administration’s benevolence,” she said.

The deputy governor declared that the six-point agenda of the Rauf Aregbesola administration is about economic empowerment of the people cum radical transformation of the socio-political landscape of the state of Osun.

In her welcome speech, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Mofolake Adegboyega, enjoined women to support the present government in the state to improve the qualitity of lives of the people of the state.
