EFCC urges court to revoke Metuh’s bail

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC), the prosecuting agency in the ongoing trial of former Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) spokesman, Olisah Metuh, has urged the court to revoke Metuh’s bail.

Mr Sylvanus Tahir, counsel to the EFCC, who made the application at the resumption of hearing of the matter on Tuesday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, said Metuh should be remanded in prison.

Tahir said the application was based on the grounds that Metuh had breached the terms of the bail granted him by the court, by being absent in court for two days with no cogent reason.

The prosecutor asked the court to discountenance the submissions of the defence as to why Metuh was absent in court.

“Since the defendant has been absent from court for two days for inexplicable reasons, and bearing in mind that the defendant is enjoining the bail of the court and has undermined the purpose of the bail.

“The prosecution is constrained to apply for the revocation of the bail pursuant to Sections 137(b) and 169 of the Administration of Criminal Justice.

” We urge the court to revoke the bail and commit the defendant to prison pending the determination of his case.”

He further told the court that he was vehemently opposed to the application to vacate the days already fixed for trial and adjourn to the next dates convenient for the court.

On the said medical report sent to the court by Dr. O.C. Ekweugwu of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Universiry Teaching Hospital, Anambra, the prosecutor said there was nothing before the court to prove the authenticity of the letter.

“The letter ought to have come by way of an affidavit, but nobody has deposed to an oath verifying the worth of the so called medical report, rather the report was just dumped in the court.”

He further submitted that it was of no purpose for the defence to ask the court to order an investigation to ascertain the veracity of the medical report.

Mr Onyeachi Ikpeazu (SAN), counsel to Metuh, had in his submission, prayed the court to vacate the earlier dates the court had fixed for the trial and fix fresh dates in the interest of justice.

Ikpeazu urged the court to grant the application on the grounds that his client was currently in hospital undergoing treatment for a spine related illness.

He further submitted that being a criminal case, it was mandatory for his client to be in court since it was against the law to proceed with the matter in the absence of his client.

Mr Tochukwu Onwubufor (SAN), counsel to the second defendant in the matter said that he aligned himself with the submissions of Ikpeazu.

Onwubufor, however, added that there was substantial reason for Metuh’s absence in court.

“There is a letter from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, Anambra stating the medical condition of the first defendant.”

On the question of the authenticity of the report and whether the person who signed it was indeed a medical doctor, the counsel asked the court for time to investigate.

Justice Okon Abang said the court noted that there was no proof before the court to show that the person who issued the letter was a medical doctor or an employee of the hospital.

Abang added that the hospital was not a party in the matter and that the person who issued the letter was not in court to testify.

He further wondered how the said letter found its way into the court records.

He adjourned the matter until Jan. 24 for continuation of arguments by counsel.

  • Osun council polls: APC urges massive voter turnout

Osun council polls: APC urges massive voter turnout

OSUN State All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged voters to come out on Saturday to vote in the council election.

The party advised residents, particularly its supporters, to vote for those they want to be in charge of their councils.

It said: “It is a responsibility they should not take lightly.”

A statement yesterday in Osogbo, the capital, by APC spokesperson Kunle Oyatomi, reads: “Participation in local government election is as important as any other election in the country, and for locals, it should perhaps be more important for residents of the locality because it is their closest interaction with governance through which they can be heard.

“Since it is official from the state electoral commission that the election is holding on Saturday, and since no other agency is authorised by law to do so, it is imperative that voters turn up for the election.

“Nobody should allow himself/herself to be deceived that there will be no voting on that day. Anyone who says so will be attempting to fool you. So, you have to come out and vote for the candidates of your choice.

“Any party that is not participating in the election may be doing so either out of ignorance or fear of possible disgraceful failure at the polls, or both. However, the APC already has 280 of its candidates returned unopposed out of the 389 wards. But that’s not a reason to take victory for granted in the remaining 109 wards for grabs. Go out on Saturday and register a decisive victory by voting for the APC from the rest of the contest.

“The local government election will give a vivid indication of what the governorship contest of September will be. The APC expects no less than a resounding victory.

“As you read this, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is the most vitriolic opposition party we have in Osun, is so disorganised that its centre cannot hold.

“Besides, efforts to patch the factions together have repeatedly failed; which is an indication that the party is incapable of governing. They are falling apart even before the people of Osun show them the red card for the fourth time. The first time the PDP got the red card was in 2003, (but it took the court’s intervention in 2010 to stop PDP from stealing victory).

“The second time was just under a year that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola came to power in 2011. That was when Senator Iyiola Omisore and others were removed from the National Assembly. The third humiliation of Omisore and the PDP was in 2014, when, in spite of the massive deployment of Federal might in the Senator’s favour, he lost the governorship election woefully.

“The fourth time will be a double on Saturday and in September that crushing defeats in both the council and governorship elections will nail the coffins of the PDP once and for all. That will be the crowning glory for a brilliant patriot of Osun origin who has so robustly fought a monstrosity called the PDP from stopping progress in Osun. God bless Ogbeni.”

Rep urges Fayemi to join Ekiti race

A member of the House of Representatives from Ondo State, Friday Olemija, has urged the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to join Ekiti State governorship race.

Olemija noted that Fayemi set the standard of good governance between 2010 and 2014.

The lawmaker said the standard had not been matched by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration.

The lawmaker representing Akoko Northeast/Akoko Northwest of Ondo State noted that “the bad governance going on in Ekiti” must end with the enthronement of an All Progressives Congress (APC) government, after the July 14 governorship election.

Olemija spoke at the weekend when he visited members of John Kayode Fayemi (JKF) Movement, led by their Coordinator, Pastor Ade Kolade, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital.

The minister is yet to declare his intent.

The lawmaker hailed Fayemi for attracting some federal projects to Ekiti State, including bauxite and kaolin exploration, the Federal secretariat, Federal Low Cost Housing and extension of rail lines to the state.

The former Akoko Northeast council chairman said Ekiti State benefited more from the APC-led Federal Government, “despite the endless verbal attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari by Governor Ayo Fayose”.

  • CJN urges judges to shun embarrassing acts

CJN urges judges to shun embarrassing acts

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, has urged judges to shun acts capable of embarrassing the Judiciary and the nation.

Onnoghen also urged Nigerians to pray for the Judiciary because it serves to protect the nation’s unity and ensure a peaceful society.

He spoke yesterday in Abuja at the swearing-in of Justice Adamu Abdu Kafarati as the Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

Justice Onnoghen said: “Avoid things that will embarrass the Judiciary and embarrass you, embarrass the country and your family.

“I know you have been trying your best in that direction, please sustain the effort. Don’t get blackmailed. Don’t get intimidated. People will talk.

“Obviously, in this society, nobody loses a case, because the law is against him.

“He loses the case because the judge does not like his face; the judge is this, the judge is that. But, the judge must be there and that judge happens to be you,” he said.

Justice Onnoghen also urged judges to be fair and always be guided by the law and Constitution.

He assured that the Judiciary will protect and support judges, who abide by their oath of office and provisions of the Constitution.

According to him: “Justice Kafarati and other judicial officers, you are particularly reminded today of your oath, which you have taken. Be guided always by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the law.

“When you do that and continue to do that, you will have no problem. That will ensure justice to all and sundry, because there is nothing greater than the rule of law.

“The scale you wield and the sword is mighty. When once you come to the conclusion that this side weighs more than that, you have to apply the legal truth, no matter whose ox is gored.

“That is the only way you can ensure justice to all. That is the only way by which the judicial powers of this nation can be properly harnessed and enforced.

“That is the only way we can ensure unity, because the sense of injustice breeds disunity. And it is our responsibility to ensure that we return to the good old days, we return to a Judiciary that. Commands respect

“The perception will always be there, because you don’t strive to satisfy everybody because if you do that, you would fail.

“If you do that, you will be a hypocrite. And a judicial officer is not a hypocrite.

“It is either the man is right or wrong. Your duty is to say who is right or who is wrong. Stick to that. That is the only way by which we can go back home and sleep and, in fact, snore,” the CJN said.

Justice Onnoghen praised the retiring Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, for his contributions to jurisprudence and service to the judiciary and nation.

He urged judges of the court to cooperate with Justice Kafarati to enable to improve on the court’s performance.

Justice Kafarati, born in 1954, hails from Kwami in Gombe State. He takes over from Justice Auta, who tenure ends at 12 midnight on September 16.

Justice Kafarati will continue to function in acting capacity until his nomination by the National Judicial Council (NJC) is confirmed by the President and Senate as provided in Section 250(1) of the Constitution.

  • Rivers APC urges Wike to aid stranded final-year medical students abroad

RIVERS State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Davies Ikanya has urged Governor  Nyesom  Wike to aid  16 stranded final-year  medical students from Rivers on overseas scholarship.

Ikanya, yesterday in Port Harcourt, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Public Affairs,  Chief Eze  Chukwuemeka Eze, urged Wike, a former Minister of State for Education, not to abandon the Rivers youths.

He noted that the governor refused to pay the fees and allowances of the students, despite his 2015 campaign promises.

All students of All Saints University, St. Vincent and the Grenadines in Canada, they were suspended in September 2016, two months to their graduation, and have not received their allowances for two years and 10 months.

It was learnt the affected students had been at home since their suspension, with their landlords threatening legal actions to recover unpaid rent.

Rivers APC chairman said: “As we prepare to ensure the ouster of the visionless, misguided and opportunistic  Wike government from the BrickHouse (Government House, Port Harcourt) in 2019, I plead with our elders, traditional and religious leaders to intervene and prevail on Wike to save the stranded children of Rivers State from further punishment and suffering, by paying their fees and allowances.

“If not for any reason, let Wike act on humanitarian grounds, if he still has any human feeling, which we know he lacks, in order to save Rivers State from further embarrassment.”

Last week, the parents of 22 final year medical students on overseas scholarship, under the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), urged Wike to show compassion on their children, by fulfilling his promise.

They admonished the governor to pay the fees and allowances for the 2017/2018 medical final year students of the University of Debrecen in Hungary, to enable them to complete their programmes, obtain their certificates, settle their creditors and return to Nigeria.

The parents solicited the help of Rivers elders, chiefs, religious leaders, men and women of goodwill, as well as human rights organisations to plead with Wike to bring an end to the agonising plight of their children.

  • Dickson urges police, Misau to stop feud

Dickson urges police, Misau to stop feud

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has urged the police and Senator Isa Misau to end their feud over allegations of corruption.

He spoke yesterday when he resumed duty after his vacation.

Dickson said the allegations were unhealthy to the image of the senator and the police.

Misau, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, alleged that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, received gratifications from police commissioners and corporate organisations.

The police responded by declaring the senator a deserter for allegedly leaving the force to contest an election without following due process or getting the right permission.

But, Dickson expressed concern over the controversy, which, he said, was capable of ridiculing public institutions by portraying the Senate and the police in bad light.

Describing the two institutions as critical and sacred, the governor insisted that such crisis of confidence could undermine the police and the Senate.

Calling on Misau to withdraw his allegations against the police, the governor also asked the police to restrain from making further statements on the matter or taking further action against the senator.

The governor observed that the police had many problems that required the support of stakeholders, including serving and former officers.

He said such support would help motivate policemen and officers, “who are underfunded but are doing a difficult job in a difficult situation to safeguard the country”.

Dickson, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, confirmed that he had returned from his vacation after enjoying deserved rest and attending to personal matters.

The statement said the governor as required by law had transmitted a letter to the State House of Assembly through the Speaker, Konbowei Benson, to notify the lawmakers of his resumption.

  • Provost urges parents to encourage use of library

The Provost of College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Prof. Mojisola Oyarekua, has advised parents and other stakeholders to encourage use of library by students.
Speaking at a programme by the library unit, she said libraries were the hallmark of education in the past when students depended on them for scholarly works.
Oyarekua described as worrisome, the poor reading culture among youths.
Praising the library management for embarking on sensitisation of students on the effective usage of the library, she said it would help in the advancement of knowledge and re-awaken the reading culture, which, she noted, was fast becoming extinct.

Makarfi urges transparency in management of Buhari’s health

The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has urged the Presidency to be more transparent in the management of President Muhammadu Buhari’s health issues.

In a statement yesterday by the spokesman of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the faction joined other Nigerians to welcome the President back home from his 50-day medical vacation to the United Kingdom.

The statement said: “We pray for the President’s complete recovery and advise the Presidency to be more transparent in managing the health of President Muhmmadu Buhari.

“Nigerians deserve to know the  health status of their President and how it is being managed.

“In the same vein, we thank the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for holding fort creditably while the President was away; and urge him to continue to work assiduously to lift the nation out of this debilitating economic recession.

“To achieve this, all hands must be on deck. There is therefore the need to reduce political tension and bring all Nigerians together.

“We call on all Nigerians to continue to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari’s quick recovery; and wisdom for the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo in the onerous task of steering the ship of state.”

  • Dalung urges Ambode to revive Stores

Dalung urges Ambode to revive Stores

The Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung on Wednesday made a passionate appeal to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State to help revive Lagos-based Stationery Stores FC.

Dalung made the appeal after they had jointly inspected facilities at the National Stadium, Lagos purportedly abandoned about 11 years ago for possible concession to Lagos State Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Stationery Stores, founded in 1958 by then business mogul, Israel Adebajo, became dominant in the football circles in Nigeria between the 1980’s and 1990’s, providing the bulk of the national team players.

Notable among the players are Ike Shorunmu, Sam Opone, late Peter Fregene, Ganiyu Ajide, Abiodun Obafemi, Koya Dosunmu, Wasiu Adetoro and Hakeem Ogunlade among others.

The team won a total 13 Lagos State Challenge Cups and was four-time champions of FA Cup in 1967, 1968, 1982 and 1990. The team was the champions of the premier league in 1992.

Stationery Stores was also the runners-up of African Cup Winners Cup in 1981.

Trouble started for the club in 1992 when they were relegated for failing to complete their fixtures due to financial problems. It also faced some legal battles thereafter.

The team was unable to come back to life due to unresolved internal wrangling in the family.

Baring the importance of the club to football development in Lagos, Dalung called on Ambode to wade into the matters affecting the club in order to resuscitate it.

“I want to appeal to the Lagos State Government to resuscitate the club I so much loved when I was in Plateau State.

“I am a fan of the club and I have been trying to look out for the club. I have searched the internet also.

“When I arrived in Lagos yesterday, I was trying to see the semblance of the club because I want to associate with them.

“Whatever be the circumstances that may have led to the end of the club, I trust you with your large heart and your capacity to intervene.

“I want the crisis to be resolved and ensure that the team is resuscitated. The sentiments of that club to the national stadium cannot be wished away,’’ he said.

Responding, Ambode said that he was a fan of the club too, adding that he had watched some matches of the club sometimes ago.

“I am also a fan of Stationary Stores; I used to watch the team play against NEPA in the National Stadium. I was once thrown out of my seat during one of their matches,’’ he said.
