    US pledges continued support to Nigeria’s security efforts

    The United States (U.S.) government has reaffirmed  commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria to support the country in its fight against terrorism and banditry.

    It said that it is also exploring new areas of collaboration, particularly in capacity building, intelligence sharing and joint operational planning.

    The U.S. Defence Attaché in Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore, made the disclosure during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters, Abuja.

    The assurance came two days after the U.S. delivered critical military supplies to Nigeria to support the ongoing counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.

    According to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), which announced the delivery on its official X handle on Tuesday, the shipment underscored the U.S. security partnership with Nigeria.

    In a statement by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Apollonia Anele, on Thursday, Moore said that the U.S remains committed to supporting the Nigerian Army in key non-kinetic areas, including humanitarian assistance and troop welfare initiatives, which she noted are essential to sustaining morale and operational effectiveness in the field.

    She expressed appreciation for the cordial and mutually beneficial relationship between the two armies.

    Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commended the U.S government for its enduring partnership and sustained support to the Nigerian Army.

    The COAS noted that the Nigerian Army has benefitted immensely from American military professionalism and institutional expertise.

    The Army Chief said that he and several Principal Staff Officers are alumni of renowned U.S professional military institutions, “a testament to the depth and impact of the bilateral military relationship.”

    The COAS emphasized that the Nigerian Army remains keen on leveraging the U.S Army’s “extensive experience in both kinetic and non-kinetic operations.”

    He advocated for expanded avenues of cooperation aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness, institutional capacity, doctrine development and strategic capability.

    Nigerian-founded immigration technology startup Immigify has been named among eleven startups selected globally to participate in the 2025 Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator, a highly competitive programme  supporting some of the world’s most promising ventures.

    The Techstars accelerator, based in the United States, is one of the world’s largest pre-seed investors, with a portfolio of over 4,800 startups.

    It provides participating companies with access to world-class mentorship, funding opportunities, and a global network designed to help scale their impact.

    Immigify, founded by Nigerian entrepreneurs Emmanuel Olorunsheyi and Ayodeji Niyi-Adesola, operates an AI-powered platform that simplifies U.S. immigration processes for businesses and skilled professionals seeking to transition their careers abroad.

    The company is the only Nigerian-led startup in the Techstars Workforce Development Spring 2025 cohort.

    Olorunsheyi described the selection as a significant milestone, not just for the company, but for Africa’s growing legal-tech and workforce mobility sector.

    “With this backing from Techstars, Immigify will redefine how US businesses manage international talent, and how these talents, particularly from Nigeria, access US work opportunities,” he said.

    US-Nigeria Open Skies Air Transport agreement comes into Force

    The US-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement, which has been provisionally applied since 2000, came into force on May 13, 2024.

    A statement by the US Embassy in Abuja stated that the bilateral agreement establishes a modern civil aviation relationship with Nigeria consistent with US Open Skies international aviation policy and with commitments to high standards of aviation safety and security.

    The agreement includes provisions that allow for unrestricted capacity and frequency of services, open route rights, a liberal charter regime, and open code-sharing opportunities.

    “This agreement with Nigeria is a step forward in liberalizing the international civil aviation sector in Africa and further expands our strong economic and commercial partnership, promotes people-to-people ties, and creates new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers.”
