  • TCN inaugurates 100MVA transformer, assures increase in power supply

The management of Transmission Company of Nigeria ( TCN ), on Monday inaugurated 100 MVA transformer at Alimosho substation, Lagos to boost electricity supply to residents within Ikeja Disco.

Mr Usman Mohammed, the Managing Director of TCN, while inaugurating the project, said the company was not just concerned in increasing the quantum of power, but also the quality of electricity being supplied.

Mohammed said that the upgrading of 1X30MVA with 1x100MVA transformer at Alimosho 132/33KV transmission substation had raised the station output capacity from 160 MVA to 230 MVA.

“With this development, TCN has not only established adequate Transformer capacity to serve these parts of Lagos but has also provided the necessary redundancy in line with the requirements of N-1 reliability criterion at Alimosho transmission substations at present.

“In addition, two projects under the transmission rehabilitation and expansion programme will intervene in Lagos and environs.

“The Nigeria Electricity Transmission Access Project ( NETAP ) will significantly upgrade the following substations; Ijora, Lekki, Alagbon, Alausa, Maryland, Otta, Egbin, Omowu odofun, Itire and Akoka.

“Similarly, the preparation for the Lagos Ogun Transmission Project financed by JICA has reached advanced stage.

“The project will build transmission lines and substations in Likosi, Arigbajo, Badagry, New Agbara, Mountain of Fire and Redeem among others,’’ he said.

According to Mohammed, all the projects that TCN is implementing in Lagos and Ogun are consistent with both states policies on power development.

He said that TCN would appreciate the support of the two states in resolving disputes over land where substations had been built.

Mohammed said that the ongoing project was part of the World Bank 300 million dollars on International Development Association credit to support the rehabilitation and upgrade of Nigeria’s electricity transmission substations and lines.

He said that the project was part of the Federal Government’s power sector recovery programme to boost electricity generation and distribution system.

The managing director noted that the Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project would help to address key bottlenecks in the transmission network and improve access to affordable and reliable electricity service to Nigerians.

The TCN boss said that the company had secured close to two billion dollars for the rehabilitation of National Grid infrastructure and expansion of its transmission capacities up to 20,000 megawatts target within the next three years.

He, however, lauded Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing under whose leadership, TCN was transformed from the weakest to the strongest in the NEI value chain.

“I wish to use this occasion to call on the distribution companies to invest in their network so that the massive investment by TCN and generation companies can lead to economic growth and development of Nigeria.’’

According to him, with the replacement of 1X30MVA with 1X100MVA, 132/33kV transformers at Alimosho 132/33KV substation, the communities under the network of Ikeja DISCO are expected to experience remarkable improvement in power supply.

“This would increase supply to Gowon and Shagari Estates, New Ipaja, Ayobo, Abule Egba, Ekoro, Ajasa Command, Okunola, Idimu Road, Olorun Adaba, Shasha, Sanyos Layout, Akowonjo, Orile-Agege, Arigbanla, Dopemu, Tower Alumium, Oko Oba and Oki areas.’’

“We are privileged to be the only APUA centre of excellence in the whole of English speaking West Africa.

“This feat was achieved because NAPTIN met the requirements of APUA for admission into the African Network of Centre of Excellence in Electricity culminating in an MOU with APUA whose dividend we are witnessing today,’’ he said.

Nagode said the initiative would lead to enhancement of the capacity and competence of the manpower of the utilities and improvement in service  delivery.

He said that the initiative would also serve as a means of generating foreign exchange for the country.

He said the training programme would be in batches in order not to unsettle the smooth and scheduled operations of the utilities.

“The first batch of 106 which we have started this week is of two trades, namely Transformer and Switch Gears Maintenance with 60 trainees and this is taking place here in Lagos,’’ Nagode said.

He added that “the Power System Protection training of 46 staff is holding simultaneously in our Kainji Regional Training Centre, New Bussa Niger.’’

Nagode acknowledged the Managing Director of TCN, Mr Usman Mohammed, for his invaluable support and belief in NAPTIN.

He said Mohammed had demonstrated uncommon professionalism and leadership in his role as the Chairman of West African Power Pool (WAPP).

“ This has enhanced the on-going WAPP initiative of developing a business model for NAPTIN Kainji as Regional Centre of Excellence,’’ he said.

Nagode said NAPTIN would train young Nigerians who wanted to make a career in the power sector, during the year.

He listed some of the areas of training as Distribution Substation Operation, Cable Jointing, Lines Maintenance and Electrical Fitting as well as Solar PV Installation and Maintenance.

“We have just concluded a training collaboration with WINROCK, under the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme sponsored by USAID,’’ Nagode added.

In his remark, Mohammed, said the training would translate to best opportunities for staff in delivering effective services to the public.

Muhammed,  represented by Mr Ifeanyi Ezeukwu, Executive Director, Human Resources of TCN, said  “ for a long while now we have not trained this level of engineers of various offices.

“But with the support of APUA and NAPTIN we are now able to train them to impact the industry and network’’.

He added, “at the end of the day we will be able to deliver power for Nigerians and reduce the level of restiveness in  rural areas.’’

One of the trainees, Mr Nasiru Aliyu from TCN Kaduna region commended the management of TCN and NAPTIN for the training, adding that it would impact positively on their operations.

National electricity grid improves – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), says the deployment of Free Governor Control mechanisms by Power Generation Companies (GenCos) in their power plants has resulted in an improved national grid stability and reliability.

The Interim Managing Director of the TCN, Mr Usman Mohammed, said this in a statement by Mrs Seun Olagunju, TCN’s General Manger, Public Affairs, in Abuja on Thursday.

Mohammed explained free governor mechanism as a device that automatically adjusts the rotational speed of the turbine and the power generation output.

“The free governor is an important controller in the power plant as it regulates the turbine speed and power movement in the grid frequency regulation.’’

Mohammed said the device, deployed on May 22 by the GenCos, was in compliance with the national grid code.

According to him, the grid system frequency had been within the operational limits of 49.50 – 50.50Hz, with the potential of drastically reducing incidences of high frequency and system collapse.

“This is a remarkable milestone achievement in the history of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry”, he said.

Mohammed commended the collaborative efforts and sense of patriotism displayed by the managements of GenCos, noting that the mechanism would also mitigate the negative effects of load under-utilisation.

He reassured the general public of TCN’s commitment and determination to work with other key stakeholders in the power sector to provide more quality electricity supply to the people.

  • TCN boss appointment not condition for AfDB loan – Fashola

TCN boss appointment not condition for AfDB loan – Fashola

The appointment of Mr. Usman Mohammed as interim Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is not a condition for Africa Development Bank (AfDB) loan facility, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said on Monday.

The AfDB had last week approved a $155 million loan for Economic and Power Sector Reform Programme (EPSERP) in the country.

Fashola stated this when he appeared before the Joint Committee on Power on Monday in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The minister’s appearance followed a petition written to the Senate by workers under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies.

The workers had alleged that due process was not followed in the appointment of Mohammed as TCN chief.

Fashola, however, denied the allegations that the appointment of Mohammed, who worked with AfDB was a form of collateral for the loan.

He said the appointment was designed to ensure responsiveness to the needs of generation and distribution companies in Nigeria.

“The appointment of new TCN boss has nothing to do with lack of capacity. It has everything to do with the need to improve.

“The transmission stations are the connectivity of sub stations and need to constantly interlink with themselves, have supervisory control and skills acquisition system that helps them perform optimally.

“The engineers will not be able to do their work if the administrative sector that provides the tools budgeting and planning does not give them the tools to do their work,’’ the minister said.
