Youth Empowerment:  Ododo, Yaya laud  DAM Foundation Basketball Championship

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, and his immediate predecessor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, have commended the DAM Foundation for successfully hosting the DAM Foundation Basketball Championship, describing the initiative as a significant platform for youth empowerment, grassroots talent development, and social cohesion in Kogi Central.

The championship, held in Okene on Tuesday attracted widespread public interest and blended competitive sports with entertainment and cultural expression.

Performances by leading Nigerian music stars, including Davido, Odumodublvck, Ice Prince, and Cubana Chief Priest, drew large crowds, while indigenous Ebira artistes showcased the state’s cultural heritage.

Organisers said the tournament was conceived as a high-impact grassroots sports programme aimed at identifying young talents, fostering unity, and promoting community development through sports. Observers noted that the event reinforced the role of athletics as a catalyst for youth engagement and social integration.

Following a series of competitive matches featuring teams from local government areas and surrounding regions, the Okene Basketball Team emerged champions after defeating the Adavi Basketball Team in a closely contested final.

In what organisers described as a milestone for grassroots sports in the state, the winning team received a cash prize of $15,000—one of the highest rewards for a regional basketball competition in Kogi State and a notable benchmark in Nigeria’s local sports scene.

All matches were played at the newly constructed Okene Civic Centre, which was officially commissioned by Governor Ododo during the championship.

The modern facility provided a professional setting that enhanced the overall quality and profile of the tournament.

The governor announced a ₦50 million donation in support of the initiative, describing it as aligned with his administration’s focus on youth empowerment and inclusive development in Kogi Central.

Former Governor Yahaya Bello also applauded the organisers, athletes, and residents of Kogi Central, noting that sustained collaboration between successive administrations had contributed to peace and stability in the state.

In his remarks, Dr. Mustapha expressed appreciation to both leaders for their support, urged participating athletes to remain ambassadors of unity, and pledged that future editions of the championship would be expanded to deliver greater social and economic impact.

Ododo meets Okun leaders, assures of commitment to expelling bandits from Kogi

    From Ralph Omololu Agbana, Lokoja

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has assured the people of Okun Land in Kogi State of his administration’s commitment to rid the area of marauding bandits and other criminals.

He gave the assurance when the national leadership of Okun Development Association (ODA) led other stakeholders on a courtesy visit to the Governor in Lokoja on Friday.

He also pledged to support the Okun Security Trust Fund, an initiative of ODA to enhance community policing in the area.

He tasked appointees of government to work together with Okun Development Association, feel the pulse of their people and contribute to the development of the area.

While commending the leadership of ODA for their relentless sacrifice for the people, Governor Ododo said he will make a distinct mark in Okun land in the course of his administration.

He vowed to sustain ongoing onslaught against bandits across Kogi state.

In his address, President General of ODA, Ambassador Rotimi Akenson, said insecurity has assumed a frightening dimension in Okun Land.

He, however, applauded the Governor Ododo-led administration for the recent breakthroughs and initiatives recorded in Okun Land, especially the recruitment of additional vigilantes to complement conventional security apparatus.

The ODA President General said the Okun Security Trust Fund seeks partnership with Kogi State government to empower and enable community development associations in the area to put structures in place that will help them explore result-oriented collaborations between conventional and non-conventional security systems.

“We are witnesses to the many incidents of rampant kidnapping and banditry, with daily killings and maiming of innocent citizens across the land through the activities of bandits and other criminal elements.

“The attendant loss of lives of locals and invasion of farmlands by herders are having very devastating consequences on the economy of Okun Land and our people,” Akenson lamented.

The ODA called on Kogi state government to formulate an executive framework to regulate activities in the state in a manner that will ensure sustainability of the environment as regards the ecosystem of the state.

On the state of infrastructure and economy, the ODA President-General said: “The roads linking Okunland to Ekiti, Ondo, and Kwara States though federal roads have been in a very bad state for many years, with a bandwagon negative effect on trading activities, the economy and security.

We appeal to your Excellency to take further steps in addressing this menace through appropriate government intervention or private partnership. There is also the need to embark on the massive construction of rural roads in Okun to boost agriculture and commercial activities across the state, “he said.

The State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), called on the people of Okun land to separate security issues from politics.

He urged the people to show more than passing interest in the abundant natural resources Okun land is endowed with.

Chairman, Okun Area Traditional Council, Oba Solomon Dele Owoniyi, commended Governor Ododo for his sustained fight against banditry in the area.

Oba Owoniyi, who led other first class monarchs including the Olujumu of Ijumu, Oba William Olusegun Ayeni; Olu of Oworo, Mallam Muhammed Adoga Baiyerohi; and the Elulu of Mopa, Oba Muyiwa Ibeun, said it is unfortunate that some indigenes are colluding with criminals to perpetuate crimes in the land.

The Monarch, however, called on the state government to remain steadfast in its commitment to rid Okun land of bandits and other criminals.

•Pledges to train, equip minimum of 1000 youths annually

The Kogi State Government has trained and empowered 250 youths in different skills, even as Governor Usman Ododo restated his administration’s commitment to continuously train 1000 youths annually in skills acquisition as a crucial step towards enhancing human capital development.

The Governor reiterated this pledge during the graduation ceremony of the 250 youths who successfully completed various skills acquisition programmes under the Ododo Youth Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Programme (OYESA).

The initiative is designed to equip participants with industry-relevant skills, thereby enhancing their employability and contributing to the state’s human capital development.

The project implemented in collaboration with the state-owned Nigeria-Korea Friendship Institute for Vocational and Advanced Technology (NKFI), was aimed to provide young people with the necessary skills to meet industry demands.

The ultimate goal is to train a minimum of 1,000 youths in high-demand vocational skills by 2027, positioning Kogi as a center for technical expertise and innovation.

During the graduation ceremony held at the Mohammed Buhari Civic Center, Governor Ododo reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce to drive the state’s economic growth.

  • On Yahaya Bello, what does Gov Ododo really want?

On Yahaya Bello, what does Gov Ododo really want?

    By Yushau A. Shuaib

My first encounter with Usman Ododo occurred at PRNigeria Centre Abuja in February 2021, exactly four years ago, when he sought strategic communication support for Governor Yahaya Bello’s aspirations. He portrayed a committed and loyal aide, yet I found it peculiar that he never mentioned his own political ambition. It was through our legal adviser Yunus Abdulsalam, now a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who accompanied him then, that I learned Ododo was likely to be Bello’s anointed candidate.

At the time, I struggled to understand how Bello could endorse someone who struck me as remarkably humble and reserved, lacking the typical boastfulness and vainglory associated with Nigerian politicians. As the Auditor General for Local Governments, Usman Ododo had never served as a flamboyant commissioner in a lucrative ministry or as the chief executive of a prominent state agency.

Despite his low political profile, I later learned that he had been quietly supporting philanthropic initiatives through various groups and individuals, benefiting communities across the state. Interestingly, these efforts were often perceived as coming from Yahaya Bello himself, likely due to Ododo’s evident admiration for the governor.

A few days later, I received an invitation from a respected media colleague to attend a press engagement with the former governor. This encounter later became the subject of my article, “Governor Yahaya Bello for President of Nigeria?” In it, I reflected on our earlier acquaintance when he served as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and was subsequently offered automatic employment at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). Then, I served as Head of Press and Public Relations from 1999 to 2005.

I noticed Bello’s intense publicity push, especially regarding his controversial stance on the COVID-19 pandemic, which he infamously downplayed as a “glorified malaria.” He consistently defied safety measures, opposed vaccination efforts, and countered public health narratives—actions that attracted significant media attention, similar to former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Despite facing a barrage of criticisms from formidable opposition forces both within and outside the state, which often cast him as a controversial figure and undermined his notable strides and achievements in empowerment, revenue generation, infrastructure development, and other areas, Yahaya Bello as an achiever remains one of the most misunderstood governors of the Buhari era.

During the meeting, I informed Yahaya Bello of Usman Ododo’s support for his presidential aspirations. In response, the governor smiled and downplayed Ododo’s role, saying, “Watch out for that guy… he is a perfect candidate for the future.” Intrigued, I began researching Ododo’s background.

Born on January 1, 1978, in Okene, he pursued academics at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, where he earned both a National Diploma and a Higher National Diploma in Accounting, later obtaining a B.Sc. in Accounting (Forensic) from Achievers University, Owo. His professional trajectory included positions as Assistant Manager of Revenue at the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and Finance Manager at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN).

In 2016, Governor Bello appointed him Auditor General of Local Governments in Kogi State. His financial management and compliance expertise earned him memberships in esteemed organisations such as the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.

While serving as Auditor General, Ododo was nominated as the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and subsequently won the 2024 governorship election at age 46. A defining aspect of Ododo’s character is his unwavering loyalty, humility, and sincerity. His deep allegiance to Bello has drawn both admiration and criticism. Many believe Bello’s endorsement of Ododo was a calculated move intended to preserve his political legacy and influence within the state.

As governor, Usman Ododo has demonstrated remarkable loyalty to his predecessor, even going so far as to assist Bello in evading scrutiny and arrest, as reported. Ododo’s administration largely mirrors Bello’s policies, emphasizing strong alignment with his predecessor’s political interests.

In a nation where anointed candidates often turn against their benefactors, Ododo’s steadfast loyalty to Yahaya Bello stands out as exceptional. His readiness to confront federal agencies, such the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC), raises questions about his priorities. This loyalty is not merely political; it appears personal and calculated, though it comes with risks of potential political isolation and damage to reputation.

Despite not being particularly outspoken or inclined to grant press interviews, Ododo has been quietly impacting the state through infrastructure development, reconciliation with opposition groups, and fostering peaceful coexistence. A recent executive summary of a monthly PRNigeria media review on Kogi State highlights a mix of positive efforts, security challenges, and political developments.

The report indicates that Ododo’s administration is commended for budgetary allocations, welfare initiatives, and infrastructural projects, although security threats and political controversies dominate public discourse. The report suggested that strengthening security, project implementation and judicious utilisation of resources and strategic media relations will be vital for sustaining positive public perception and effective governance.

Meanwhile, to gauge the sentiments of Kogi indigenes, I consulted Mojeed Dahiru, a respected public commentator and columnist from Okene. He commented, “Ododo has a peaceful disposition… he views himself as a governor for all, striving to build consensus among political leaders, ethnic groups, and religious communities, even engaging with the opposition.”

Similarly, I reached out to Haruna Abdullahi Haruspice, a renowned social media influencer and Igala chieftaincy titleholder, to gain insight into Ododo’s leadership style. While praising the governor, Haruspice noted that he demonstrates a humane approach to leadership marked by remarkable humility, particularly in the face of adversity and hostile environments. Moreover, he highlighted Ododo’s promising prospects for ensuring the equitable distribution of government interventions across the state.

An Abuja-based youth activist, Shuaibu Omoolowo, described Ododo as a visionary leader with the potential to drive Kogi State toward a prosperous future. He acknowledged his loyalty to the former governor, who remains a guiding figure in his career. However, he emphasised that while Bello’s influence is present, he does not interfere in governance but encourages Ododo to make independent decisions and lead with autonomy.

He noted that while Ododo remains loyal to the former Governor, who continues to serve as a guiding figure in his career, Bello’s influence does not interfere with his decision-making, allowing him to take independent actions and lead with autonomy.

Despite the commendations, concerns persist regarding perceived favoritism or nepotism, especially in appointments and resource allocation from some quarters. The pathway ahead for Governor Usman Ododo requires a careful balance between loyalty and the democratic ideals of accountability to the people of Kogi State.

Someone once posed a simple yet profound question that remains unanswered: “In loyalty to Yahaya Bello, what does Ododo really want?”

NGO to President, governors: stop Ododo from obstructing anti-graft fight

A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Vanguard for Credible Representation (VCR), has agains urged President Bola Tinubu and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) to prevail on Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo to stop obstructing the fight against corruption.

In a statement in Abuja by its Head of Mission, Onche Ugbabe, the NGO frowned at the activities of one of the pro-Yahaya Bello’s groups, called Africa Media Roundtable, which said Governor Ododo “should be celebrated”.

The statement reads: “We restate our position and demand that the Presidency, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) should wade in and save Nigeria from further embarrassment by calling Governor Ododo to order.

“The so-called Roundtable even insulted our collective intelligence by touting that Governor Ododo should be celebrated! Celebrated for his obstructive roles? Celebrated for housing a man already declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) based on the summons issued by the court of law?

VCR restated its position that the protection Governor Ododo has given former Governor Yahaya Bello “undermines the renewed fight against corruption by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, making the President and the country a laughing stock”.

It added: “That is why we are calling on the President, the Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum and the Progressives Governors’ Forum to intervene and call Governor Ododo to order.”
