Yak, Utaka may face Barca in China

Nigerian duo of Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Peter Utaka playing in the Chinese Super League may be handed a rare chance to play against one of the world’s best team FC Barcelona, reports suggest.

Barca’s President Sandro Rosell has already confirmed that FC Barcelona will tour Asia this summer with China already chosen as one of the destinations.

While the President didn’t reveal the teams Barça will face, he did confirm the dates and locations of the team’s three exhibition matches.

According to Barcelona’s official website, the first game during the Asian tour will be played in Shanghai (China) on August 4, three days later, August 7, Barça will fly to Bangkok (Thailand) for the second match of the tour, and the third match will be held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) on the 10th.

The planned August tour will be the second visit to the Far East for Bracelona have embarked on similar visit in the summer of 2010, the Blaugrana played exhibition matches in Seoul (South Korea) and Beijing (China).

While eyes are now on the Asian tour, Bracelona through its website reaffirmed that her first pre-season match will be against Josep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich on July 24.

SUPER EAGLES INVITATION John Utaka promises 120%

JOHN UTAKA has promised a 120% effort for Nigeria if he is picked for next year’s AFCON in South Africa.

The striker, who made a goal-scoring return for French champions Montpellier at the weekend against Nice after he was sidelined by a groin injury, told MTNFootball.com his commitment to Nigeria is not negotiable.

“It’s the coach who decides who to invite, but for me any time I am given the chance, I will give a 120% for my country, said Utaka, who started two qualifiers under Stephen Keshi in June.

Utaka started 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Namibia and Malawi and was then dropped for the 2013 AFCON qualifier at home against Rwanda after he fired blanks in both games.

He said Nigeria have the quality to win a third Nations Cup trophy in South Africa because Keshi has made remarkable progress with the team since he took charge last year.

“We have what it takes to win the Nations Cup in South Africa. Coach Keshi has been doing a great job and anyone who is following the work of the coach will admit the huge progress has been made,” he told MTNFootball.com.

However, he warned that a first round group that pitches the Eagles against defending champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia ought not to be taken lightly.

“I have seen our group and I must confess that no team in that group is easy. Africa football is a different ball game and you know that any country that files out against Nigeria wants to make history by beating Nigeria,” he warned.

    • Fans want him against Lone Star

Nigeria international and Dalian Aerbin forward Peter Utaka is desirous of a return to the Super Eagles as the Stephen Keshi-led side continues in its campaign to grab a ticket for the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa.

The 28-year-old, who joined the Chinese Super League in January this year, has since become a hit scoring 16 goals in 23 appearances, just an inch away from holding the highest goal scorer title in the Asian country that has become a new Mecca for top footballers.

The former OB Odense striker is hoping to re-enact his goal-scoring record in his new club in the hope that his effort will fire the club to geater heights on the one hand, and earn him a place in Keshi’s enclave on the other.

“I care only about winning matches,” says Utaka. “It would be ideal if my team wins and I score. We are now sitting in sixth and I hope we can finish in a better position. As for me, I hope I can prove my worth with Dalian and hopefully, my club form can earn me a return to the Nigeria national team,” he enthused.

Utaka, who left an impressive record at Odense scoring 52 goals in 108 appearances, confessed in a chat with FIFA.com that he is enjoying his sojourn in China even as he revealed efforts aimed at convincing his mother and elder brother and Montpellier striker, John Utaka to come over.

“Everything here is enjoyable in China. I feel comfortable about the life here and I appreciate the help from everyone around me – my coach, team-mates, supporters etc. I hope my mum will come here to join me next season. As for John, we’ve chatted much about the Chinese league via phone and so it is also possible for him to move here,” he added

Teaming up with his brother, according to the former Royal Antwerp ace, would not be a bad idea as it will further improve the club’s scoring chances

“That would be fantastic,” he says. “It is not about the family reunion but goalscoring work. John is a good player and he can prove that with any team.”

Apparently eager to see Nigeria at the Nations Cup next year and Brazil World Cup in 2014 especially after missing the last World Cup in South Africa, some Nigerian fans who have been following Peter Utaka’s exploits have made a case for him to be part of Keshi’s attack.

One of such fans on Aifuwa, a social network site, said: “Utaka is one of the best in Nigeria. Keshi needs to invite him in October. Congrats Utaka. Keep it up.”

Tambal2010, reacting from Sudan, however, said “C league still needs time to be a top league”

Peter Utaka’s romance with the national team began in September 2009 thanks to Coach Shaibu Amodu who handed him a call up. He later made his debut for Nigeria months later in a 5–2 home win over Congo DR on 3 March 2010 and twice in a Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia.

    Utaka knows fate today

Super Eagles and Montpellier striker John Utaka will know how long he will stay away from action after undergoing a scan today.

The former Rennes star suffered a groin injury and limped out after just 25 minutes in a league tie his side lost 3-1 on Friday at Reims.

Although today’s scan is what will determine the exact extent of the injury and how long he will be on the sidelines, initial permutations suggest he is likely to be away for six weeks. Already, he has been ruled out of Montpellier’s Champions League opener against Arsenal on Tuesday.

The Nigerian is however not the only worried member of the team ahead of Tuesday’s showdown against Arsenal, as Montpellier coach Rene Girard is equally singing a lamentation song especially when Arsenal fired warning shots by demolishing English Premier Leagur newcomers Southampton 6-1 on Saturday

“I’m not in the habit of accusing my own players but what’s happening at the moment is pitiful. We’re conceding goals like a junior team. It’s quite worrying,” regretted Girard.

Montpellier, who sold top scorer Olivier Giroud to Arsenal in the summer, have made their worst start to a French title defence in 10 years.
