On the issue of rescheduled dates for both the mock and main examinations, Benjamin said that the board was yet to decide on a new date but would give updates as soon as possible.

NAN reports that the board considered rescheduling the initial dates for the examination because of the shift of dates for the general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking also on the suspension of 17 Computer Based Test (CBT) centres across the country, Benjamin assured that the suspension would not, in anyway, affect the process of the examinations as the board had over 700 accredited centres nationwide.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) says about 1.6 million registration documents for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have so far been sold within two days to end the exercise.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in an interview with our reporter on Friday in Lagos.

The board commenced the sales of the document on Dec. 6, 2017, and had said it would close on Feb. 6.

However, the board’s Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, on Feb. 6, announced extension of the documents sales to Feb. 11, in attempt to accommodate candidates who failed to register within the two months window.

According to Benjamin, this year’s registration for the examination has proven to be one of the best in recent times.

“As at the close of work on Thursday, I can comfortably say that we have registered close to 1.6 million candidates for the examination.

“This year’s registration too can be adjudged as one of the best in recent times as it has been smooth, hitch and rancour-free.

“Having said this though, the board will like to warn that there may be no more extension of period of registration for candidates in our future examinations.

“This is because some mischievous persons may want to seize the opportunity of the lengthy period of registration to carry out infractions that could undermine the integrity of the examination,’’.

“We are seriously considering reducing the registration period to about one month.

“We no longer want to give fraudsters the opportunity to deploy all kinds of tricks into the process.

“Imagine a situation whereby in a whole month, less than 10 per cent registered until when we started approaching the last lap of the exercise.’’

Reports have it that no date has been fixed for the much anticipated mock UTME with the main examination temporarily scheduled for March 9 to March 17.

JAMB postpone sales of UTME forms

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has postponed the sales of next year’s unified tertiary matriculation examination forms.

The board had planned to begin the sale of the UTME form today.

JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, blamed the postponement on failure of the publisher of the texts to be used for the UTME next year.

Dr. Benjamin said the publisher had promised to deliver all the texts for the 2018 candidates on or before on the 7th but failed to do so.

He said: “As at close of work today, the publisher had not provided the 1.8m copies required and this development   painfully forced the Board to shift the date from Wednesday November 22, 2017 to a date to be announced soon.

“The Board regrets all inconveniences occasioned by this postponement as it is working round the clock to announce a new date soon.

“Please note that all arrangements have been concluded for the sale of the application documents and the conduct of the examination.”

•Board expects 1.7m candidates to apply

THE Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) yesterday said it will soon begin the sale of application forms for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said an estimated 1.7 million candidates are expected to register and sit for the Computer-Based Test(CBT).
He added that the board was also increasing the capacity of the CBT centres to maximise their effectiveness to examine more candidates within a given date.
He spoke at the Green Legacy, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta while fielding questions from reporters after a meeting with stakeholders on information technology being introduced into the board’s examination to make it less stressful to candidates.
According to Oloyede, the board was working with the possibility of conducting a “mock examination” to test its preparedness with the new technology and also examine some people that were eager to know their competence with the JAMB examination.
He noted that the stakeholders’ meeting was organised to enable people make inputs into the new ICT facilities and critique it before putting them into use.
His words: “What we are doing appears to be suitable to majority of our stakeholders. It is a surprise to us that we are apprehensive of what we wanted to do that maybe we are going to create problem. We are more confident to go along with the sale of the form for 2017 UTME examination.
“I believed that Nigeria is ripe for this. Nigeria is more advanced than some of these countries. At least, we have three or four countries that are observing our examination and they want to go the way of the conduct of the examination.
“We are expecting 1.7 million candidates and we want to make sure we satisfy these candidates within a week or thereabouts. That is why we are increasing the capacity of the Computer-Based Test centres to be able to examine more candidates within a given date
“If we are talking about 1.5 million candidates, it means that in a given day, about 60,000 or 70,000 candidates will take the examination.
“We have invited stakeholders to critique the process because we don’t want to go in the wrong direction. We are creating some ICT facilities and we want our stakeholders, prospective candidates, respected scholars, institutions and civil societies to come together and critique what we are doing, so that we can be sure before we go too far in a wrong direction.
“This is with a view of harvesting good ideas that could improve what we are doing. We thought we are coming here to get dismantled all we have put together. But what we are having are cheers that we can do it this way, or amend it that way.”
He added: “I must be frank with you, I cannot promise hitch-free examination because we are testing certain things. We are changing certain things. We want to question the status quo and of course, we expect a fightback by interests that will be trampled upon.
“We are going to be as sincere as possible in the direction we are going. We are going to be as flexible as humanly possible. We are not promising hitch-free examination.”
