10 ways to ensure success in Post-UTME

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board(JAMB) recently announced 120 as the cutoff mark for candidates to qualify to write the post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination ( UTME ).

With the lowered mark from 180 last year, more candidates will have the opportunity to write the examination and better chance for admission.

Based on past experience, here are  a few tips and tricks on how to succeed in the exercise.

1.READ UP PAST QUESTIONS: This is very important for any student that wants to succeed in the upcoming examination
Past questions serve as a guide to writing the examination. It gives you a clue on the area of concentration and makes you well equipped on what to expect from the examiners.

Furthermore, so many tertiary institutions have been known over the years to repeat questions from the previous examinations.  Some of the questions might be repeated and if a student has revised the past questions booklet thoroughly,he is sure to succeed.

    2. ATTEMPT FAMILIAR QUESTIONS FIRST:
You should start with quesstionos that you are really good at as this will give you the confidence to take on the rest.
A student who focuses on the questions he or she knows best will do better  than the one who doesn’t. It is always advisable to focus on the questions you know before you go for the ones you don’t know

    3.TIME MANAGEMENT
Time is part of the examination. They test your ability to work with time. Manage the little time given for the examination and don’t waste much time on questions you don’t know.  Answer all the ones you know and then come back to the unknown questions before the time lapses.

    4. BE CONVERSANT WITH YOUR ENVIRONMENT
Visit your exam venue some days before the date. If you must arrive that day, arrive on time so as to make new friends that you can revise possible questions with. This will help you to get over  the pressure that go with examinations.

5.GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF EXAMINATION TECHNIQUES OF YOUR SCHOOL OF CHOICE
Different schools have different techniques for their Post-UTME. While most Nigerian universities have adopted the computer based test(CBT),others have stuck with the old PPT (paper and pencil test)
Whatever the case may be, to succeed in the examination, you should be conversant with the techniques of your examination before entering the exam hall.
You may find computer based examination trials on the internet and practice well so as to get used to the procedure if this is your first time.
    6.OBEY ALL EXAMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
You must read all instructions before you start to answer the questions. This is very important. Failure to read instructions can make any student fail an examination.
Be sure to come to the examination hall with the right materials required of you to avoid disqualification in the examination hall

    7.  DO NOT CHEAT
In order to succeed in the post-utme examination, do not indulge in any form of examination malpractice. Do away with materials such as pieces of papers containing answers or gadgets and communication devices that can implicate you and be disqualified.

    8.DRESS APPROPRIATELY
According to a  popular saying –“dress the way you want to be addressed.” When going in for the examination,be sure to dress decently and appropriately to avoid harassment from examiners and security personnel.

9.REVIEW YOUR ANSWERED QUESTIONS BEFORE SUBMISSION
Don’t submit your questions without reading through them over and over again to check for mistakes and probably questions you missed.
Be sure to dot your I’s and cross your T’s before submission. There is no award for the first person to submit. It is not about how fast, but how well.

10.PRAY BEFORE AND AFTER THE EXAMINATION

It is pertinent to always commit whatever you do into the hands of your creator. So, as a candidate ensure you pray before and after the exam so as to succeed in your endeavour.

Post-UTME screening: UNILAG invites candidates with 200 upwards

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Tuesday said its Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) aptitude test for prospective students for the 2017/2018 academic session would hold from September 18 to September 22.

The institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information, Mr Toyin Adebule, said in a statement that online registration for the Post-UTME screening exercise for placement into courses/programmes for the new academic session would take place from August 31 to September 15.

Giving a rundown of the modalities for admission into the institution, he said that only candidates who made University of Lagos their first choice in the 2017/2018 UTME and scored 200 and above are eligible for the screening.

In addition, he said that candidates must possess a minimum of five credit passes at one sitting in relevant O/level subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

“Candidates who will not be 16 years of age by October 31 are not eligible and need not apply.

“Candidates who do not participate in this Post-UTME screening will also not be considered for admission.

“The screening fee has been pegged at N2,000 and candidates should follow the registration procedure keenly.

“Eligible candidates should log on to University of Lagos website www.unilag.edu.ng and then take the following steps.

“They should click on admission, then click on Post-UTME application, and login with their UTME number as their username and surname in lowercase as password,’’ the statement read.

Adebule said this would generate a print payment advice which they would use to proceed to any commercial bank to make payment or pay online.

He said that the prospective candidates are to return to the university portal to upload their passport photographs and complete the application forms.

According to him, they will in turn print the Post-UTME examination Pass for the aptitude test which will hold from September 18 to September 22.

He urged candidates to adhere strictly to the guidelines and not to hesitate to obtain clarifications where necessary.

  • DELSU ignores Fed Govt, charges N5, 000 for post-UTME screening

Contrary to Federal Government’s policy, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has announced its readiness to conduct “computer-based aptitude tests” in place of post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for the 2017/2018 academic session.

Besides, the university is charging each candidate N5, 000, in addition to N1, 000 bank commission, bringing the total cost to N6, 000 against the maximum N2, 500 allowed by the government’s order for the screening.

In an official bulletin dated June 13, the institution directed candidates to visit its admission portal to “generate a virtual pin with N5, 000’’.

Candidates were directed to make the payment at Ecobank, Unity Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA or Fidelity Bank.

According to it, the payment is for centre-screening and covers honoraria for centre-facilitation, logistics for producing screening materials and security.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, in a statement on June 28, 2016, warned tertiary institutions against charging candidates for post-UTME screening.

The warning followed reports that some institutions had ignored the earlier abolition of post-UTME test and devised other means to screen students with certain fees imposed on them.

“Any screening which tertiary institutions choose to conduct should only be for the purpose of verification of certificates of the candidates, JAMB scores, and any other physical examination to ensure that such candidates are not cultists.

“After this, the candidates are qualified for matriculation. Such screening should be at no cost to the parents or students and should be done upon resumption in order to avoid unnecessary travels in search of admission,” Adamu said.

The Registrar of DELSU, Mr Daniel Urhibo, confirmed the authenticity of the school’s bulletin and defended the N5, 000 screening charge per candidate.

“It is aptitude test. We are not setting another kind of examination for them the way JAMB sets for them, and it is going to be computer-based,’’ Urhibo said.

Asked to differentiate the “computer-based aptitude test’’ from the post-UTME test abolished by the government, he told NAN that the Federal Government did not scrap post-UTME test.

“It is the same agency of the government that said `you can select your students.’

“Twenty-six thousand candidates applied to DELSU; how do you select, may be 5,000 or 6,000? There must be some kind of uniform test to assess them.

“Last year, we asked them to submit their secondary school results and we graded them. Do you know that people claiming to have `A’s in their results could not write their names?

“Some of them had forged results. We went to the internet and discovered that somebody who claimed to have scored 300 in UTME had just 120.

“So, if you use that type you won’t get the best; that is why there is some kind of a little aptitude test for them,’’ he said.

Urhibo explained that the N5, 000 charge was needed to conduct the exercise as the university was not in good financial position to bear the cost.

“We need materials to do this test; we will pay the people who are going to administer the test and those who will mark it.

“We need money to service our computers and to develop the software for the test. So, from where do you expect us to get the money to do these?’’

The minister of education or spokesman of the ministry could not be reached for reaction to this in spite of several attempts in more than two weeks.

However, a top official of the ministry, who craved anonymity, said what the university was trying to do was illegal. The National Universities Commission (NUC), tasked with enforcement of the abolition of the post-UTME test and screening charges, was also not forthcoming on the matter.

Its Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, neither answered several calls to his mobile telephone nor replied NAN enquiry sent to him via SMS and Whatsapp.

The commission’s spokesman, Mr Ibrahim Yakasai, also did not respond when contacted through the three channels.

  • JAMB will not condone multiple registration for Direct Entry, UTME

JAMB will not condone multiple registration for Direct Entry, UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will not condone multiple registration for Direct Entry and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

A statement signed by JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, Mr Fabian Benjamin said in Abuja on Sunday.

Benjamin described the act of multiple registration as a serious offence in the process of obtaining the Board’s application forms  presently on sale.

He said that the warning had become imperative for people to know and understand that violation of such rule would attract sanctions.

“Candidates are to note that our advertisement for 2017 UTME clearly states the penalty for any candidate caught buying two forms.

“Members of the public are requested to note that any candidate who indulges in double registration will be caught by our software and disqualified.

“The Board is not interested in the candidates’ money as is being insinuated by certain group who suggested to the Board that such registration will enhance the revenue base of the Board.

“No, we are more interested in the credibility of the examination and not the money, if money is our concern we will not be returning over five billion naira to the Federal Government coffers.’’

Benjamin said this year, the Board had so far remitted more than five billion naira to government, the highest ever in the 40 years of its existence.

He said that the money was saved through the transparent and judicious use of resources.

Benjamin urged candidates to disregard all information on admission, especially cut-off marks being circulated on the net.

According to him, the Board has established new method of admission in line with its mandate to ensure fairness irrespective of tribe, religion and it is determined to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

The JAMB public relations officer said that the Board had held consultations with universities across the country to enable candidates meet the requirement and secure admission without the assistance of anybody.

According to him, no cut-off mark has been arrived at as this can only be done at a policy meeting, which is at the moment yet to be conveyed.

“Do not allow yourselves to be defrauded by internet fraudsters, the policy meeting would commence the 2017 admission with all mode, process and acceptable conditions for admission.

“The Prof. Oloyede led management is working to ensure transparent, acceptable and fair admission process.

“We have designed software known as Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), where human interference will be completely removed, to promote credibility.

“The admission criteria would be keyed into the software and it will select candidates blindly according to the institutions requirement without any primordial consideration.’’ (NAN)

Owners of delisted CBT centres under investigation – JAMB

The Registrar/Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said on Thursday that owners of some Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres which were delisted over alleged dishonesty in the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are currently under investigation by security agencies.

Prof. Oloyede, who stated this at a meeting with owners of CBT centres in Abuja, said their proprietors would soon face trial in court.

He said the board is ready to go the whole hog of investigation and legal processes just to serve as deterrent to others.

The JAMB chief also said every centre involved in any shameful act during registration and conduct of the examination would be fished out and dealt with appropriately.

He said: “On the part of the Board, we have delisted some centres that indulged in irregularities, malpractices and illegalities. While investigations are still ongoing in some other centres, we have reported those found culpable of crimes to the security agencies for appropriate actions including prosecution and its attendant consequences.

“In order to serve as deterrent to others, we are ready to go the whole hog of the investigation and legal processes and procedures.  We are also ready to support the processes with all the necessary logistics.

“Every centre involved in any shameful act during registration, conduct of the examination and even after the administration of the examination, including the individuals and entities claiming to have ability to increase scores of candidates or those involved in admission racketeering using the Computer Based Test centres as allies would be fished out and dealt with appropriately.

“In JAMB, the change begins with me campaign is not only a slogan, but it is already a way of life which we believe in and which we have adopted as our guiding principle.

“I therefore use this opportunity to register the Board’s strong displeasure over the conduct of some CBT centres, which in spite of the Board’s efforts in providing necessary facilities to the centres with a view to checking incessant tide of examination malpractice, still went ahead to perpetrate all sorts of illegal acts. We have taken the first and immediate action of suspending and delisting 72 centres.”

He said the Board called the meeting to review conduct of this year’s examination and also begin preparation for 2018.

  • Kudos for Oloyede over supplementary UTME’s conduct

Kudos for Oloyede over supplementary UTME’s conduct

The Forum of Non-Governmental Organisations in Nigeria (FONGON), an umbrella body of over 100 Non-Governmental Organisations in the country, has praised the Prof. Ishaq Oloyede-led Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over the conduct of last Saturday’s supplementary Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Wole Badmus, it said reports indicate a smooth and transparent examination process in the over 170 centres with over 85,000 students partaking. It said: “This is another milestone for the JAMB in its quest to give a corruption free test for applicants into the Nation’s tertiary institutions of learning.

“Prior to the supplementary exam, concerned students were adequately informed of data pertaining to the examination venue, time and date via text messages, E-mails and newspaper advertorials. This is to curtail a situation where some applicants will claim ignorant of their particulars in order to perpetuate assessment fraud’ the statement went further.

“Prompt release of examination results and adequate briefing of the public on matters relating to the tests are steps capable of reinforcing public confidence in the examination body.

‘It is equally heartwarming that in the post examination audit of the last UTME, the board blacklisted over 71 CBT Centres with 48 of them receiving outright ban from participating in future exercise. This, to us will go a long way in aiding the war against examination malpractices in the country as operators of other private CBT Centres will have a rethink before collaborating with unscrupulous members of the public to perpetuate examination fraud in their centres.

“We hereby advise the JAMB to take additional steps by taking up legal actions against major players in examination derelictions in competent courts of law.

“His far reaching reforms has greatly transform the board from an organisation that hitherto command little public confidence into a cynosure of all eyes and reference point for a hitch-free, transparent dealings in public business.”
