  • BREAKING: JAMB shifts UTME exams

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) has shifted the dates for the conduct of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations.

The management of the board is currently in a meeting to decide a new date for the examinations.

    Details shortly……

  • Electronic devices remain banned from exam halls – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Sunday insisted the use of electronic devices by candidates during the unified tertiary matriculation examinations (UTME) remained prohibited.

The agency said electronic devices like mobile phones, calculators, wristwatches and recorders won’t be allowed into any of its centres by candidates during this year’s examination.

JAMB stated these in its Weekly Bulletin obtained by our reporter in Abuja on Sunday.

Some of the banned items include: spy reading glasses, cameras, ear piece, Bluetooth devices, USB, CD, hard disk and other similar storage devices.

Others are: pen/biro, smart lenses, books or any reading/writing material, ink/pen readers, key holders, ATM cards, erasers and smart rings/jewelries.

The statement reads: “To ensure that the board’s examinations meet best global practice, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has prohibited the use of the following items during examinations.

“Candidates are hereby advised in their best interest not to bring these items close to the examination venue. Any breach of this directive would bar the candidates from taking the examination.”

JAMB’s Spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said candidates have been complying with the directives since it was introduced by the agency.

He stated some candidates who breached the directive and brought some of the devices to the hall were caught and handed over to security agencies.

According to him, the essence of the ban is to ensure that JAMB’s examination meets global best practice.

He said: “Candidates have been complying. The board had provided lockers where candidates can lock their personal belongings. However, if you are caught in the hall with any of them, certainly you would be sanctioned.

“Last year we caught a lady that had a phone in her private part and she was taken to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and she was prosecuted.”

Chairman, Governing Board of JAMB, Dr. Emmanuel Ndukwe, attributed the ban on cyber café from handling its registration on the need to have a seamless, free from all kinds of infractions registration process.

Ndukwe noted the ban became inevitable following the review of the activities of cybercafé operators.

He explained that registration was a vital component of any successful examination and as such, it should not be marred by extortion, mismatched data and poor technical know-how.

He added that the agency would continue to define the code of operations with a view to enhancing the system for the benefit of all candidates.

  • UTME: JAMB suspends CBT centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ), has suspended the University of Benin ICT Computer Based Test (CBT) centre and eight others from partaking in this year’s unified tertiary matriculation examination registration.

The board stated that the centres were suspended for breaching the code governing the 2019 registration exercise.

JAMB disclosed these in its weekly news bulletin obtained by The Nation on Monday in Abuja.

JAMB’s Spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, also said the board was monitoring the activities of 10 more centres in Lagos and Plateau states, noting that appropriate action would be taken against them once investigation is concluded.

The suspended centres include Mardakem Company Ltd., Methodist Boys High School, College Road, beside Maritime Academy, Oron, Akwa-Ibom state; Bintels Global Services LTD. (Centre for Computer Education), Fr. Joseph Memorial High Sch. Aguleri, Anambra State; Noble & Shuaib ICT Ltd, Girls Secondary School, Alor, Anambra State; and Global ICT Connect Ltd, Km 5, Gboko Rd, Opp College of Health Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi.

Others are: DA Civic Centre, 79 Airport Road by Benoni Junction, Benin city, Edo State; University Of Benin International ICT Centre, Iyayi Computer Building, Benin City, Edo State; Medes ICT Centre, Govt. Technical College, Idepe, Okitipupa, Ondo State; Divine Success All CBT Centre, Km1, Along IseyinIbadan Express Way Iseyin, Oyo State; and Riyom ICT Centre, former Riyom Local Govt Secretariat, Riyom, Plateau State.

According to him, the board, during a meeting with CBT operators in Lagos, had spelt out the cost for each service for the UTME, from the cost of obtaining the e-pins as reduced by the Federal Government to the cost of the reading texts and charges for registering candidates.

He explained that before commencing the 2019 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) registration, the guidelines on the exercise was deliberated and laid out for all CBT operators to adhere to strictly.

The JAMB spokesperson said: “Earlier, the Board reiterated the directive of the Federal Government for the 2019 e-pins to be sold at N3, 500 excluding the cost of the reading text, to ensure absolute compliance. The meeting had also resolved that the cost of registration should not exceed N700.

“Candidates were also to be guided properly on the processes, if for any reasons such assistance is required, without collecting any dime from them.
Unfortunately, findings from the Board’s monitoring exercise revealed that some centres were charging higher than the stipulated figure directed by the Federal Government and equally agreed on at the Lagos meeting for other charges.

“The Board finds this very disappointing and has therefore suspended such centres caught in this unholy act from the 2019 exercise.

“The Board is monitoring closely and about 10 centres are under investigation in Lagos and Plateau. Management would meet on Monday 28th January 2019 to take appropriate action on these centres.

“The Board will continue to monitor the on-going exercise, to ensure that Nigerians are not misled by unpatriotic operators. JAMB monitoring teams are spread all over the nation and whoever is caught, would be punished in accordance with the precedence being laid now.

“All centre operators and selling outlets are advised to adhere to the Federal Government’s price of e-pins, cost of registration and not to sell any of the documents meant to be issued to candidates free.

“As a regulator, the Board would continue to protect the candidates to ensure that they are not misled, cheated or frustrated in their quest to acquire tertiary education.

  • JAMB registers over 300,000 candidates in one week

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) says it has registered over 300,000 candidates for its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in one week.

The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.

Benjamin said that this was coming a week after the commencement of the registration exercise.

The board commenced registration of candidates for 2019 all Computer Based Test (CBT) on Jan.10 and it would close on Feb. 21.

According to him, the registration so far has been seamless, and the board is happy with the development.

“We are happy with the way the process is going; we hope it will continue this way.

“So far, we have registered over 300,000 candidates as at Thursday.

“We are happy there have not been issues because so far, there is just a tiny gap between the number of candidates that have acquired the e-pin and that of those that have registered,” he said.

Meanwhile, JAMB had insisted that all candidates with issues of biometrics must go over to Abuja for it to be rectified.

“I want to reiterate the fact that only the Registrar of the board has the sole right to attend to such issues.

“Any candidate who may have issues with the capturing of his or her fingerprints at their respective points of registration will need to come down to our office in Abuja.

“This will require the Chief Executive to do it himself for the purpose of security,” Benjamin said.

This, however, was contrary to calls by some stakeholders urging the board to set up special centres in every state of the country to tackle issues.

The National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) had argued that asking candidates with biometric issues to travel all the way to Abuja to get such issues sorted out was too demanding, citing dangers of transportation, fares, among others.

Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the second Deputy National President of the Association, said that most parents were barely struggling to get money to get their children and wards registered.

Ogunbanjo said that for those with such biometric issues, travelling to Abuja was an additional burden.

  • UTME: JAMB fixes January for registration, sales of forms

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has fixed January 2019 for the sales of its forms and registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB Governing Board Chairman Dr. Emmanuel Ndukwe stated this at an event to celebrate some workers of the board, who retired in Abuja.

He said the board picked next year for registration of UTME candidates because it wanted the reduction in the cost of selling its forms approved by the Federal Government to take effect.

Ndukwe explained that the reduction followed recommendations made by management and board of JAMB to the Federal Government because it was becoming difficult for some parents to raise the N5,000 being charged by the board.

Ndukwe, who hailed the government for approving the reduction, said it would affect the amount that JAMB would return to the Federal Government next year.

He said: “You are aware that the Federal Government has reduced the cost of JAMB forms from N5,000 to N3,500. But it is going to take effect from next year. Therefore, if we now starts selling the forms today, we will still sell at the cost of N5,000 because the approval does not cover for now. That is why we have shifted the sale of JAMB form to any day from first of January.

“It is a very good move from the Federal Government based on our recommendation. Even though we are returning money to the coffers of the Federal G0overnment, our primary objective is not just to make money because that money is coming from somewhere and it is difficult for some people to raise that money and pay for JAMB form even though JAMB form is among the cheapest in the whole world.”

It was also learnt that the board had so far offered admission to 470,000 students.

“As we were in the board meeting, admission were still going on. On the screen, we are seeing it. It is changing by the minute,” he said.

Ndukwe said the board will fully implement the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).

“We are looking forward to the full implementation of CAPS. That is the best thing that will happen to education in Nigeria. If any child is qualified, central admission processing system will guarantee that that person is admitted. People should be patient and pray as we are implementing CAPS.”

  • Elections won’t affect UTME, says registrar

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has said the 2019 general election will not affect the 2019/2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Oloyede, fielding questions from reporters after delivering the 2018 Annual Sobo Sowemimo Lecture of the Abeokuta Club in Abeokuta, Ogun State, said since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had given the dates of the elections, the board would adjust accordingly.

“I don’t think there will be any need for a shift in the examination date because of the 2019 general election. I believe INEC has done well by giving us a prior notice six months ago.

“They have given us the date of the elections. So we have no excuse not to have adjusted. We have adjusted appropriately,” he said.

The registrar decried the rate at which candidates, who were not qualified to write the examination, applied for it, thereby causing what he described as “unnecessary luggage” on the board.

He said the examination body would adopt stiffer measures to prevent unqualified candidates from applying and writing the examination for the 2019/2020 admission exercise.

Oloyede noted that JAMB would not allow anyone to take undue advantage over others, saying the board would not repeat the mistake it recorded in the last examination “as regards this development.”

  • JAMB welcomes application for CBT centers in Katsina

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Thursday in Katsina said it will welcome application from qualified business centers willing to establish Computer Based Test centers, CBT, that could be deployed to use in the conduct of unified tertiary matriculation examinations, UTME

The state coordinator of JAMB, Isyaku Mohammed Kankia told the Nation in an exclusive interview in his office, that the present number of CBT center which he put about 7, is grossly inadequate and cannot take over 25,000 applicants expected to write the UTME exams from the state each year

He said ‘’the 7 CBT centers presently located as follows: Daura 2,Funtua,Malumfashi and Kusada one each, and Dutsin-Ma 2  ,are grossly inadequate so we invite more qualified applicants for CBT centers to come forward’’

The JAMB boss further admonished applicants for the UTME exams to embrace the various innovations introduced by the management of the board, especially during registration and processing of applications for admission, to ensure a hitch free admission exercise

He said ’’intending applicants must during registration, ensure the posses valid email address, functional telephone lines which they can even source from close relatives in case they don’t have. There is no registration by proxy, because of data capturing’’

‘’Awaiting results must quickly come forward to upload their results as soon as they were released by the various examination bodies’’

Reviewing the conducts of the last UTME exercise, especially with the flood gate of complaints particularly from two CBT centers in the state capital, the cordinator adduced some reasons that usually occasioned complaints of missing center numbers and candidates not finding their examination centers to include; mistakes made at the registration points by candidates, poor finger print capturing, and poor profile creation by candidates and re-selling of pin by candidates

Kankia further admitted that some of the challenges facing JAMB in Katsina state include awareness and adequate knowledge of the various innovations and technology introduced by the examination body

He said ’’we are presently reaching out to relevant stakeholders to create better awareness level on our activities through visits to media houses, schools, traditional rulers and allied agencies. This is because when candidates are well informed about the innovations taking place in JAMB the better for a seamless service delivery’’

He admonished candidates to discourage second hand information and that when in doubt about the activities of the board ,they should approach the office for clarification

  • JAMB releases results of rescheduled UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), on Tuesday, announced that the Direct Entry (DE) application, which began in December 2017, would close on June 4.

The Board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the announcement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja.

According to Benjamin, over 140, 000 candidates have so far obtained the forms online.

He said that the closure became necessary in order to avail the board to plan ahead for the 2018 admission process into various institutions.

“With the policy meeting coming up on June 26, which involves the Minister of Education and all stakeholders in the sector, the 2018 admission guidelines would be discussed and approved for the board.

“This includes both for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and DE.

“Therefore, candidates who are still interested and want to apply for the DE should use the window period of seven days to apply, as no extension of date will be granted.”

Similarly, Benjamin said that the board has released the results of the mop up examination conducted for candidates, who were rescheduled for the UTME on Saturday, May 26.

NAN recalls that the board had recently, conducted a mop up examination for over 12, 000 candidates in some of its centres across the country.

This included those whose biometrics could not be captured during the initial period of the UTME in March, those who were yet to see their results and have not been involved in any form of malpractice.

Others included those who were unable to print out their e-slip before the earlier examinations and those whose centres were cancelled for suspected malpractices.

On the admission process, Benjamin told NAN that the board frowned at some institutions that have breached the constitutional guidelines for the entire process by making advertorials before the policy meeting.

He explained that all institutions must note that they are not to make any form of adverts for admissions into their schools until after the policy meeting.

According to the spokesman, this is because the meeting is the only authorised body that approves admission process for every preceding year.

“Advertising before the policy meeting is a violation and abuse of the entire process.

“They must recall that at the meeting, all proceedings, rules and regulations guiding the admissions are discussed and unanimously approved by all stakeholders.

“However, a list of institutions that breached this rule are being compiled by the board and to be forwarded to the appropriate body for sanction.”

Benjamin added that in view of the above, those who intend to make admission adverts before the slated meeting, are urged to have a rethink and halt.

He also noted that the 2018 policy meeting of the education sector was coming early to allow institutions begin an early admission.
