  • Shun bad utterances, aspirant urges Nigerians

Nigerians especially people in Osun state have been advised to shun utterances that would led to chaos in the country.

A governorship aspirant under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state Dr Oyebola Oyemomi, gave this advice in his Ramadan message.

He said the people to obey the tenets of Islam as laid down Prophet Muhammed.

Oyemomi, who hails from Orile-Owu, said Ramadan period calls for sober reflection and shunning all vices.

Politicians, he said, should abide by the rules of the game and shun thuggery, violence and brigandage that could cause disruption of peace and harmony among the people.

He said:  “What should be paramount in our minds is how to govern and better the lots of the people. Politicians should not think of deceiving the people, but show that they are ready to lead the people alright. We should have a re-think about our attitude and deviate from criminal activities. We must all do what is just to move Nigeria forward.”

He called on the Boko-Haram leaders to use the Ramadan period to have a change of heart and stop killing innocent people.

  • Security expert warns against divisive utterances

Security expert warns against divisive utterances

A renowned security analyst, Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has expressed concerns over what he called “uncoordinated utterances” from some Nigerians.

Mumuni, the Ajagungbade of Lagos, also called on the South East elders (Ohaneze Ndigbo), including South East Governor’s Forum to be bold enough to address the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)’s agitation of Biafra Republic and declaration of cessation from Nigeria.

The author of books on Global Terrorism and its Effects on Humanity and Demand by Terror described the developments as very disturbing and unpatriotic, calling on government at all levels to take proactive measures before it gets out of hands.

He faulted the actions of the Arewa Youths Forum.

Mumuni said: “It is unpatriotic for any individual or group to make such cessation request. The Igbos are Nigerians. Agitation for Biafra died long time ago. We are all Nigerians and we’ll continue to work together in the interest of our great country.”

The security analyst chided the eastern leaders for keeping “criminal silence for too long,” stressing that their silence provoked the outburst of the Arewa youths.

“Where were those youths making cessation calls during the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) 16 wasted years? Why didn’t they come out during Jonathan’s government? They probably refused to clamour for Biafra then because they were dinning and winning with the government of the day.

“When they surfaced during this administration, renewing their agitation for Biafra, they were not called to order by their elders. If they had been cautioned earlier enough, we wouldn’t have been in this mess,” he said.

The former governorship candidate in Lagos state under the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) said it is high time the eastern leaders and their governors told Nigerians where their loyalty lies.

“You can’t be a Nigerian and still be a supporter of Biafra,” he said.

Mumuni called on government to initiate communication strategies with the agitators to avoid public disturbance.

“If not properly addressed now, the consequences will be unbearable. By then, every household will one way or the other pay dearly for it. We do not want to witness the implications or the consequences of this inaction. We’ve seen the consequence of neglect in Rwanda, we were all alive during the Sierra Leone crisis, we are living witnesses to Sudan’s needless ethnic wars and many more. The civil war was witnessed by our parents, we must not wish that for our own generation. We should not look for trouble where there is none,” he said.

Mumuni enjoined government to extend literacy to all rural communities, saying, lack of good education is playing a negative roles, and that such lapses actually gave room to the emergence of militia groups.

“More so, the implication of poverty and having to feed from the trash plays another role. Our country deserves leaders with visions,” he said.

  • Sani slams governor for ‘reckless’ utterances

Sani slams governor for ‘reckless’ utterances

The senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has cautioned Governor Nasir El-Rufai for what he called the governor’s reckless statements.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker, who has been tackling the governor since inception of his administration, described as “irresponsible” a statement in which El-Rufai allegedly told aggrieved persons on his appointments to climb the Kufena Mountain and jump.

The governor, at a town hall meeting with stakeholders from Kaduna Central, reportedly said: “Whoever is angry with his appointments at all levels can go and climb the Kufena Mountain and fall.”

Sani was reacting to the governor’s statement when he hosted some youths from Southern Kaduna.

He said: “The positive aspect of the governor’s proclamation on the Kufena Mountain is that he has put it on a national discuss and it has become a tourist attraction for people who want to see where opposition are supposed to climb, fall and die.

“But in a serious sense, it is an irresponsible statement to have called on people who voted us into power to climb such a hill, fall and to die.

“My advice to all the opposition forces in Kaduna State is that we should turn Kufena Hills into our meeting place to demand good governance, accountability and government without arrogance.”

  • Moderate your utterances, don urges politicians

A professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Olanrewaju Badmus, has urged politicians to moderate their utterances.

Badmus urged them to avoid any action that could cause violence before, during and after the elections.

The university don delivered the  256th inaugural lecture of the institution. Its title was: “Utilising the Qu’ran, Stabilizing the Society.”

He criticised the current leadership for squandering the resources and fueling corruption.

Badmus said: “That  Nigerians are passing through a difficult period is reflected in the inability of the government to rescue the abducted Chibok girls; it has also reflected in the insecurity of lives and property, the lack of effective poverty alleviation programme and the absence of prosperity-driven policies.

“A large part of the world today, including our dear country, is experiencing instability and insecurity because leaders promote injustice and corruption and neglect the welfare of followers.

“Only recently, a former Secretary of State for the United States of America, Mrs. Hillary Clinton, lambasted the Nigerian leadership for squandering the resources of the people and indirectly festering corruption.

“Leadership as a position of trust is fragile and it has to be handled with care by eschewing unethical behavior and conduct, which hinder peaceful co-existence and stability of human society. If leaders will function well according to expectation, there will be a functional economic package which will benefit the rich and the poor.

  • Uduaghan cautions against inciting utterances

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has urged politicians to be mindful of their utterances and guard against activities capable of heating up the polity.

He spoke against the backdrop of last week’s alleged assassination attempt on the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Ochei.

He is widely believed to be aspiring to succeed Uduaghan and the alleged attempt on his life has caused allegations and counter-allegations by his supporters and opponents.

Speaking after visiting the victim of the alleged explosion, Perpetual Damasus, Uduaghan said: “I urge politicians and other Delta indigenes to be calm and patient with the police as they investigate the incident. We should conduct ourselves in a manner that will not heat up the polity, especially now that political activities are on the increase.”

Damasus is receiving treatment at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara.

Governor Uduaghan assured residents of the safety of their life and property, stressing that government was on top of the situation.

The governor, who took time to study the X-ray and scan results of the victim, urged her to be hopeful, as the teaching hospital has the facilities and personnel to treat her.

The orthopaedic surgeon, Prof. Godwin Iweagbu, said her left ankle was damaged by the explosive. He assured that the threat of amputation had reduced.

The victim narrated how a device, suspected to be a cannon, exploded at the back of the canopy where she sat, hit her in the leg and disrupted the arrival of the House of Assembly speaker at Obomkpa for an event.

Stakeholders told our reporter that the incident could be an accident, which the speaker was capitalising on to whip up sentiments.

“Who tries to assassinate someone with a cannon? People should stop being unnecessarily desperate for attention and crying wolf when there is none. The speaker, as a key stakeholder in the state, should put the interest, peace and security of Delta above his political ambition,” a source said.
