President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Uyi Akpata, has reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to youth development  as he praised  the Junior Female Yellow Greens following their superb performance at the  at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.

Praising  the team for their outstanding performance for securing a historic third-place finish in the Super Six Group 2  which has earned them an automatic qualification for  the 2027 U-19 Women’s World Cup  to be hosted in Bangladesh and Nepal, Akpata  speaking  at  Friday’s rousing welcome of the  girls, said their success was a testament to the rapid growth of women’s cricket in Nigeria. He assured continued investment in grassroots development to build on this achievement.

“We are incredibly proud of these girls. They have not only put Nigeria on the global map but have also shown that with the right support and commitment, we can compete at the highest level. This is just the beginning,” Akpata stated.

Akpata further  noted that the federation is keen on developing more talents and has put structures in place to ensure sustained growth in women’s cricket.

“We have a developmental plan where most of these girls started school through secondary school competitions, then the National Youth Games, then the PwC Under-17 Championships, so, at the end of the day, it’s been strategic in terms of where we position them to be. Seven of them had actually played for the mainstream female national team, that’s because we just decided from the beginning to identify talents and continue to groom them. The fact that we have high-performance facilities in place, Abuja, Lagos, and Benin, means that we continue to have that pipeline of talent. It’s not by coincidence that nine of these girls are going to still participate in the next tournament.”
