The Imo House of Assembly on Tuesday adopted a motion commending Gov. Hope Uzodimma for increasing the minimum wage of workers from N76,000 to N104,000.

The lawmakers also commended the governor for the payment of backlog of gratuities to Imo pensioners.

The Chairman, House Committee on Pensions, Civil service, Labour, and productivity, Mr Kingsley Ozurumba (APC-Isu) proposed the commendation in a motion he presented during plenary on Tuesday in Owerri.

While presenting the motion, Ozurumba noted that the challenges in the global and Nigerian economy had limited the ability of governments to pay salaries and wages of workers.

He stated that governor Uzodimma has, however, been on the forefront in encouraging and enhancing the provision of the welfare of workers and pensioners in the state.

He added that the leadership of the organised labour union in the state in a meeting with his committee had expressed satisfaction with the governor’s efforts at improving their welfare.

The lawmaker also commended the governor for the release of N16bn for the payment of the gratuities of retirees.

He, therefore, urged the house to commend the governor for his magnanimity and commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees.

Supporting the motion, the Deputy Chief whip, Mr Kelechi Ofurum (Owerri North) commended Uzodimma for amenities put in place for the comfort of workers including providing vehicles for transporting workers and maintenance of offices.

Also speaking, the Majority Leader, Mr Kanayo Onyemaechi (Owerri West), added that the increased minimum wage in addition to other efforts to improve workers’ welfare would boost the morale of the state employees.

Uzodimma presents book on APC’s 10 years in govt Sept 30th

A book, A Decade of Impactful Progressive Governance in Nigeria, written by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is due for presentation on September 30.

According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, using his position as an insider, the governor leveraged his position as Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) Chairman to chronicle the events before and after the ascension of the party to power, and how it has impacted Nigeria.

The 10-chapter book, whose foreword was written by the immediate past Chairman of the APC and former Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is a veritable compendium for both APC and non-APC members alike, the statement added.

Emelumba quoted Governor Uzodimma as saying that the book is unique “because of its objective nature, as it highlights the obvious challenges faced by the APC in its 10-year governance from May 2015 to May 2025.”

The Commissioner said Governor Uzodimma is convinced that the book presents “a critical analysis of the manifesto of the APC and how far the party has gone in actualizing it, including areas of shortcomings. It is definitely not a PR book for the APC but a sincere examination of the party’s performance in governance.”

The broad areas covered by Uzodimma in the book include early progressive movements and parties in Nigeria, comparative analysis between pre- and post-APC eras, and the sectoral achievements recorded by the APC government in the last 10 years, Emelumba said.

According to him, Uzodimma also discussed the way forward for progressive governance in Nigeria and the vision of the APC for the country’s future, especially in the economic frontiers.

Top dignitaries across party divides are expected to grace the historic occasion.

The governor’s pronouncement met wide jubilation across the state, including the chairman of Aged Pensioners, Dr. J. B. Ugochukwu.

Announcing the pay rise, Uzodimma stated that the new wage reflected his administration’s commitment to a cordial and productive relationship with the state’s workforce and pensioners.

“We have always recognised that no government can succeed without a friendly and cordial relationship with organised labour, which we rightly describe as the engine room of government,” he said.

The governor said his administration had prioritised the welfare and dignity of Imo workers by carrying bureaucrats along in governance.

He cited improved state finances, with Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) rising from below N400 million in 2020 to nearly N4 billion currently, and federal allocation from N7.5 billion to over N13 billion.

He attributed the improved figures to the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which he said were yielding tangible benefits.

Uzodimma highlighted a significant drop in Imo State’s debt profile from N280 billion to under N100 billion, alongside massive investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

  • Uzodimma approves new minimum wage of N70,000

Uzodimma approves new minimum wage of N70,000

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants, positioning Imo among the few Nigerian states to implement such a significant wage increase amid rising economic pressures.

Announcing the development, Governor Uzodimma revealed a wide-ranging package of salary reforms and welfare initiatives aimed at improving the lives of public servants and pensioners in the state. The new wage structure takes immediate effect.

For civil servants already earning a consolidated salary of ₦70,000 or more, the state government has approved an additional 10% salary increment to promote equity and ensure broader impact.

“This is more than a wage increment,” Governor Uzodimma stated. “It is a commitment to restoring dignity to labour and ensuring that our public servants can live decent, productive lives.”

The Governor also reaffirmed his administration’s ongoing commitment to the payment of a 13th-month salary and confirmed that all pending promotions granted in recent years will now be fully implemented financially.

In a landmark move, the Governor introduced new welfare measures for pensioners, including free healthcare insurance to alleviate the financial strain on retirees. Additionally, the state has begun disbursing long-overdue gratuities dating back to 2006.

Over 5,700 retirees — comprising 2,962 from the local government and 2,742 from the state level — are expected to receive their entitlements in phased payments. Many have already received theirs, with the remainder to be paid in one or two instalments.

The reforms also extend to the Imo State Transport Company (ITC), where salaries were significantly increased in June 2025. Staff monthly pay was revised upward from ₦9,000–₦41,000 to ₦51,000–₦60,000, depending on grade level — a remarkable transformation for the once-neglected transport sector.

These latest measures build upon earlier initiatives taken by the Uzodimma-led administration. In July 2023, following the removal of fuel subsidies and resulting economic strain, the Governor approved a temporary wage increase to ₦40,000 alongside free transportation, medical care, and other social support for workers.

Reacting to the announcement, workers across the state expressed appreciation to Governor Uzodimma. The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Imo, Uchenna Ibe Great, praised the move as timely and commendable.

“It is quite commendable. We applaud the governor for this review. Since nobody told him to do it, he took it upon himself to do it. Despite all the problems confronting Imo State, he has taken time to consider the workforce. It is a good development,” Great said.

The TUC chairman also thanked the governor for prioritising pensioners, particularly the release of ₦16 billion for outstanding gratuities.

With these sweeping reforms, the Uzodimma administration continues to signal its commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees, amid ongoing national economic challenges.

“The governor has given the pensioners the opportunity to change their next of kin. This development will save people from too many court cases experienced in the past,” he added.

The governor emphasised that’s decision was not a result of pressure from the labour workforce, but rather a gesture of goodwill

“It was not pressure from the labour workforce that made the governor approve the minimum wage. We commend him for this gesture,” he said.

He described the wage increase as a victory for the entire workforce in the state, “no worker in Imo will say you (Uzodimma) have not been fair at least for this.”

At the state Secretariat along Owerri-Port Harcourt Road, jubilation galore erupted as workers celebrated the governor’s approval of the new minimum wage.

While some workers expressed cautious optimism, saying they would wait to see the implementation of the new minimum wage, others described the governor’s gesture as unexpected and sudden, welcoming the move as a positive development.

  • Uzodimma approves N104,000 minimum wage for Imo workers

Uzodimma approves N104,000 minimum wage for Imo workers

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo has approved a new minimum wage of N104,000 for civil servants in the state.

Uzodimma made this known during a meeting with various labour union leaders on Tuesday night at the Government House in Owerri.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor increased the minimum wage from N76,000 to N104,000.

Similarly, the minimum wage of doctors was raised from N215,000 to N503,000, while that of tertiary institution teachers increased from N119,000 to N222,000, among others.

He said Imo citizens had faced numerous challenges since his government took office, including insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic hardship from reform policies, and disputes over minimum wage and subsidy removal.

“There is no way any government will do well if it doesn’t have a friendly and cordial relationship with the organised labour.

“When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows.

“This is our way of investing in Imo people. Government believes in stimulating political and economic activities, carrying bureaucrats along, and making sure that workers’ welfare was highly respected,” he said.

Uzodimma said that the state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) had grown from N400 million to over N3 billion monthly.

According to him, in 2020, we were receiving allocations between N5 billion to N7 billion, but has increased to N14 billion.

“In 2020, the state recorded a debt profile of over N280 billion but has reduced to less than N100 billion,” he added.

The governor recalled that when he assumed office in 2020, the major infrastructure in all sectors were totally collapsed.

He said a lot had been expended to rebuild the collapsed infrastructure especially roads and combating the insecurity challenges.

He stressed that the removal of fuel subsidy had equally raised the cost of living in Nigeria as much as it had its own advantages.

“It is a thing of joy that we have started seeing the dividends of that bold decision of President Bola Tinubu to remove fuel subsidy.

“What government is confronted with now is how to ensure that the dividends of that policy trickles down to the common man on the street.

“Cognisant of the fact that our effort has started yielding dividends and that our IGR had improved and that reform policies of the President has also increased our allocations to sub-national governments, every responsible government must be transparent about it,” he said.

The governor further said that the state government will on Aug. 27, begin  payment of the last batch of gratituity of N16 billion owed pensioners in the state.

He said his administration had carried out major reforms in the health sector, including initiating health insurance scheme and equipping health facilities to ensure world class treatment for Imo citizens.

He said his government had keyed into the Federal Government project of establishing 1,000 businesses in every active INEC ward.

He charged labour unions to unite to foster good working relations between labour and government,

Uzodimma, who solicited for value addition from workers, also cautioned them against unethical practices and redundancy at work.

Responding, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Uchechigemezu Nwigwe described the increase in minimum wage in the state as “victory for the entire work force in the state.”

Nwigwe said Uzodimma did not only rescue the workers from the economic challenges, but had made the state one of the highest in payment of minimum wage.

“Today, no worker in Imo will say you (Uzodimma) have not been fair to us,” he noted.

Nwigwe prayed God to continue to protect the governor, assuring him that workers will reciprocate the gesture with more diligent, efficient and effective service.

Also speaking, the state Chairman of Trade Union Congress, Mr Uchenna Ibe, also lauded the governor for his “strong political will in taking up strong projects, including the increase in minimum wage.” (NAN)

  • Uzodimma, UNICEF, WHO urge mothers not to abandon breastfeeding babies

Uzodimma, UNICEF, WHO urge mothers not to abandon breastfeeding babies

The wife of Imo State Governor, Dr.(Mrs.) Chioma Uzodimma, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched a campaign to encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies.

The campaign which ran from August 1st to 7th, 2025, was marked with radio talk shows, a road walk, and the distribution of educational materials across the state.

Mrs. Uzodimma noted that the campaign was aimed to promote the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of infants. According to the Imo First Lady breastfeeding is crucial for a child’s development and provides essential nutrients and antibodies that help protect against diseases.

“Breastfeeding is not just beneficial for the baby, but also for the mother,” Uzodimma said, adding that “it helps in bonding between the mother and child, and also has health benefits for the mother. We urge all mothers to take advantage of this natural and cost-effective way to nourish their babies.”

The theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,’ underscores the need for collective action to support breastfeeding mothers and create an enabling environment for them to breastfeed with ease.

Mrs. Uzodimma also urged stakeholders to work together to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding, saying, “Creating sustainable support systems requires collective action. Let us stand together to prioritize breastfeeding and create a sustainable environment that allows mothers to breastfeed with ease.”

Dr. Ijeoma Onuoha Ogwe, Communication Specialist at UNICEF Enugu Field Office,  emphasized the need for sustainable support systems to promote breastfeeding in Nigeria.

According to Dr. Ogwe, “Breastfeeding is a cornerstone of child survival, growth, and healthy development.”

However, she noted that many Nigerian babies are not benefiting from optimal breastfeeding practices, with only 1 in 3 babies given breastmilk in the first hour after birth and only 1 in 3 babies exclusively breastfed for up to six months.

Ogwe highlighted the importance of early initiation, exclusive breastfeeding, and sustained breastfeeding, saying, “Mothers need sustainable support systems to successfully breastfeed, at home, work, and in the community.” She called on health workers to provide counselling, peer encouragement, and consistent health advice to mothers and household members.

The UNICEF Communication Specialist also urged governments and employers to invest in coordinated support for breastfeeding, including paid maternity leave, breastfeeding breaks, and workplace facilities. “Policymakers must put in place key practices and outcomes to strengthen breastfeeding,” she said. “Monitor and enforce the implementation of policies that protect breastfeeding, such as the code of marketing of breastmilk substitutes.”

Ogwe emphasized the benefits of breastfeeding, including its role in reducing healthcare costs, boosting cognitive development, and strengthening economies. She also highlighted the environmental benefits of breastfeeding, saying, “Breastmilk is a natural, renewable source of food that is produced and delivered without generating pollution, plastic waste, or environmental harm.”

In his opening remarks, Director General of Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA), Francis Nwubani, stressed the crucial role of the media in disseminating information about breastfeeding. “You play a key role in this agenda of informing the public about breastfeeding,” Nwubani said. “As we deliberate on this media dialogue, may God grant all of us the strength to pass the good messages of breastfeeding to the public and inform people about their role in creating supportive and sustainable environments for breastfeeding.”

In a joint online statement, WHO Director-General,  Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, echoed Mrs Uzodimma’s sentiments, highlighting the significance of breastfeeding in reducing infant mortality rates and promoting healthy growth and development.

“Investing in breastfeeding is an investment in the future, yet only 48 per cent of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed – well below the World Health Assembly target of 60 per cent by 2030. This is due to the overlapping challenges for new mothers, health workers, and health systems.

“Millions of mothers around the world do not receive timely and skilled support in a healthcare setting, when they need it most.

“Only a fifth of countries include infant and young child feeding training for the doctors and nurses who care for new mothers. This means the majority of the world’s mothers leave hospitals without proper guidance on how to breastfeed their babies and when to introduce complementary feeding.

“In many countries, health systems are too often under-resourced, fragmented, or poorly equipped to deliver quality, consistent, evidence-based breastfeeding support.

“Investment in breastfeeding support remains critically low even though every dollar invested generates US$35 in economic returns.”

APC will retain power in 2027, says Uzodimma

The All Progressives Congress (APC) would retain power in 2027 with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election, Imo State Governor  Hope Uzodimma said yesterday.

According to him, on the political landscape, there are only APC and the others.

Uzodimma spoke on the strength of the party when he visited the Muhammadu Buhari House, APC national headquarters in Abuja, to inspect its Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Data Center, ahead of the membership e-registration.

He said the claim by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that it would be disastrous for the APC to remain in power beyond 2027 is false.

Accompanied by his Kogi State counterpart, Usman Ododo,  the Imo governor said the comment was a mere utterance that can not hold water.

Uzodinma said: “You called it a claim. It is their claim, not our claim. I know that there are only two parties in Nigeria, All Progressives Congress and others.”

He said despite the gang-up by the opposition, APC has continued to be more united, advanced in technology, and growing in popularity across the country.

The PGF Chairman expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness for the digital membership drive.

He said: “We came to monitor and evaluate the extent of the e-registration. We have inspected and conducted a trip around the facilities, and we are highly impressed with what we saw.

“We are confident that any moment from now, our e-registration will start in full force.”

Uzodinma hailed the choice of Prof.Nentawe Yilwatda, as National Chairman, assuring that he will live up to expectation.

Beaming with optimism, he said: “Look at him here—handsome, tall, full of energy and intelligence. Our party is very excited and happy with the choice. We are confident that this is what we’ve been looking for.”

Highlighting the strong relationship between the party’s leadership and the governors, Yilwatda said the synergy has become a model of unity and internal democracy

He said: “Our relationship with the PGF is very cordial. We are exemplary in the way we conduct ourselves in NEC, in how governors relate with the party, and in how members at all levels engage. “

Yilwatda reaffirmed the party’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance its operations and voter engagement.

He said:  “We want to deepen our base in every state and use digital tools to know and support our members. This e-registration will help us with research and allow us to predict our support base accurately.”

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma yesterday announced that the murderers of a former chairman of Ideato North Local Government Area two years ago, had been arrested and his sponsors named.

He declared that those who engaged in the recent killings  in the Ideato North council would also be arrested.

He said the security agencies were on their trail and would soon nab them just the same way they arrested the killers of a former local government chairman.

Speaking at the Government House Chapel, Uzodimma assured Imo people that his government and the security agencies were determined to end the senseless killing in the state through the arrest of the perpetrators.

He said his administration has invested resources in intelligence gathering and logistics to ensure that those engaged in the security breaches don’t go scot-free.

Uzodimma declared that the government will stop at nothing to end killings and the worrisome activities of unknown gunmen in the state, while expressing his condolences to the people for the unfortunate killing of  innocent citizens at Ideato North recently by unscrupulous elements.

He  added that some wicked politicians were bent on frustrating the efforts of his government to restore peace and security in Imo State.

He recalled with sadness the incident that happened two years ago when a local government chairman was beheaded in Ideato  North.

“Two years later, we have arrested the man who beheaded him, and the man has confessed as the one who did it  and has mentioned some individuals that he is working for. Some of them have been invited by the police and they are under interrogation,” the governor added.

He stressed that the government would stop at nothing to ensure that those arrested would face the wrath of the law, as many more would be invited.

Uzodimma further remarked that “it is not enough for people to come around me here to pretend to be working for me when they are busy participating in conspiracy, eliminating innocent lives and trying to pull down the government”.

“Let us work as brothers and sisters to help restore and achieve the Imo State of our collective dream.” Senator Uzodimma pleaded.

Earlier in his homily during the church service at the Government House Chapel Owerri, the Chaplain , Rev.Fr. Prof. Gilbert Alaribe           enjoined Christians  to share their heritage and possessions with one another.

The Catholic clergyman  emphasized the  importance of sharing with others as God has freely given to  them.

He admonished the church to learn a vital lesson from the rich man in Jesus’ illustration in the Bible lesson, noting that people’s hope should not be focused on  earthly possessions but on God who owns lives.

He therefore encouraged all to have  the fear of God and abide in peace with one another.
