  • Community donates patrol van to police

Community donates patrol van to police

Bothered about the rate at which crimes and other social vices increase in their communities, residents of Agbara community have donated a patrol van to the Agbara Division of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Ogun State Command.

The gesture was to help in strengthening its capability towards curbing crimes in the area.

The Managing Director, Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC), Babajide Odusolu, who handed the vehicle over to the police said community policing is crucial to effective crime control.

Odusolu, who was represented at the ceremony by the General Manager, Agbara OPIC Estate, Taiwo Aridegbe, said security is a collective responsibility, even as it also necessitates corporate support to the security agency.

He added that the donation was part of OPIC’s corporate social responsibilities (CSR) towards combating security threat which has plagued development in the area in the last decade.

He praised the police for their partnership with the state government to foster peaceful environment, adding that part of the agenda of Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s administration was to secure people’s lives and property.

He said: “Government alone cannot face the business of policing in the state, either by way of personnel or equipment. So, if we cannot add to their personnel, we should help them with equipment. One of the cardinal programmes of Governor Amosun is to ensure safety of lives and property in Ogun State.

“In recognition of our plan to enhance the reach of district police station, the board and management of OPIC decided to donate a patrol vehicle for use by the district police post in patrolling OPIC Estate, Agbara.”

Responding, the Commissioner of Police, AbdulMajid Ali, who was represented by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Agbara Oyeniyi John, described OPIC’s effort as timely and commendable.

Also, the Baale of Igere community in Agbara Estate, Apostle John Bamidele, said a robust security network would enhance development and attract industrialists to the state.

  • Students cry out over ‘grounded’ van

Students cry out over ‘grounded’ van

Students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT MINNA) are not happy over the condition of their union’s official vehicle. The vehicle has been abandoned for over two months by Students’ Union officials, reports UCHECHUKWU EKWUEME-DURU (400-Level Industrial Technology Education).

That is the state of the official bus given to the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT MINNA) in Niger State? This is the question students are seeking an answer to from management.

The condition of the 2000 model Toyota Sienna is generating ripples, following an allegation that it has been in bad shape since the school resumed last year.

The bus, CAMPUSLIFE gathered, was donated to the union by Governor Aliyu Babangida Muazu three years ago, when the then union leaders had an accident with the 2002 Honda Civic official vehicle.

Students were prompted to ask questions when the union officials could not use the bus for functions on campus. The bus, students alleged, may have been in bad shape because of improper maintenance.

Some students claimed that the bus engine has been damaged by the carelessness of union leaders. Some alleged that the bus could not be repaired, adding that this may be why it was abandoned at the Students’ Union office.

“The current state of this 12-seater bus is not only discouraging, but also annoying,” a Chemistry student said, adding: “The car has been parked and abandoned for two months.”

When CAMPUSLIFE visited the union building to assess the condition of the vehicle, our reporter found dents on it. A patch of engine oil spread under the vehicle. Also, there was dirt underneath the bus, indicating that it may have been grounded for long. The upholstery was also covered with dirt.

Students criticised the union officials for poor maintenance, asking the SUG to repair the bus or face students’ wrath.

A SUG official, Justice Nwaigwe, a 400-Level-Physics student, told CAMPUSLIFE why the bus was abandoned for so long. “We have been explaining to students why the bus is left in the condition it is. We feel the pain more than the rest of our colleagues. We know it does not speak well about the union, especially under our leadership, but we are trying to put things in place. Currently, we are making plans to get a new vehicle for the union. After this is done, we will then look into the condition of the Toyota Sienna bus to know if it can be repaired.”

Students expressed their grievances on the state of the bus, accusing the union leadership of incompetence.

Salim Maikudi, a 200-Level Water Resources and Aquaculture Technology student, said: “I don’t know the reason why that van has been parked there since January but no matter the reason, it is not justifiable. I will simply say that it doesn’t portray the union in good light.”

Andrew Chinaza, a 300-Level Cyber Security Services student, bemoaned the development, saying: “I wonder how our SUG leaders feel when they walk pass that vehicle every day. It is bad to know that the vehicle has been in this poor state for over two months and students have not asked them to repair it. I hope our SUG officials would see reason in this and act on it immediately.”

  • Van crushes girl in Ondo

    •Train kills man in Osun

A  four-year-old girl, Precious Oluwatoba, has been knocked down by a vehicle belonging to the Ondo State Ministry of Health.

The incident occurred at Igoliki Street in Akure, the state capital.

The late Precious and her friends were playing in front of her house on Sunday evening when the incident occurred.

It was learnt that the driver of the Hilux van, simply identified as Abiodun, lost control of the vehicle and ran into the children.

Eyewitnesses said Precious died instantly. One of her friends was critically injured. She is on admission at an undisclosed hospital.

The Hilux van is marked OD 259-A08.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver was tipsy at the time of the incident. They claimed that he was driving away from a beer parlour on the street, where he had reportedly spent five hours, when the incident occurred.

The accident sparked violence in the area and residents vandalised the van.

But for the intervention of policemen from the B Division, Oke-Aro, Abiodun would have been lynched.

The late Precious’ father, Mr. Oluwatoba Olaniyan, urged the government to probe the incident.

Olaniyan said: “I am begging the government to intervene in this matter. I wondered why a drunk was allowed to drive a government vehicle. Government needs to be careful when employing drivers.

“Justice must take its course. I have been a struggling parent. It was not easy for me to bring up my daughter. There is no land to bury her remains and no money to embalm it. That is why the body is still lying there.”

Police spokesman Wole Ogodo confirmed the incident.

He said Abiodun is being detained at the ‘B’ Division Police Station.

Yesterday, a middle-aged man was crushed to death by a moving train at Agowande in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The victim is yet to be identified.

He was said to be on his way home at 4:30am after a night party, when the incident happened.

Eyewitnesses said the train was going towards the Railway Station in Osogbo.

They said the victim was drunk and was aslept on the rail track, when the train approached.

It was gathered that broken bottles were found around his body.
