    ‘How native doctor, two others kidnapped, killed varsity student’

    Three suspects have been arrested by men of Edo State Police Command for the kidnapping and killing a19-year-old, 200-Level student of Delta State University, Agbor, Faith Omodon, who was declared missing some weeks ago. They are Chukwuyem Jonah, 26, a native doctor; Godspower Chukwuedo, 23; and Christopher Nwachukwu, 22.

    Chukwuedo and Nwachukwu yesterday told the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, how they kidnapped and killed the undergraduate, who went to her father’s farm in Ewohon/Uwemen communities in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo with a Lifan CG 125 motorcycle on April 1, 2024, but never returned home, while Jonah denied involvement in the dastardly act.

    The case of the missing daughter was immediately reported at Abudu Police Divisional headquarters by the university student’s father, Edward Omodon. The three suspects were paraded with 11 others by Adegboye. The Edo CP said: “After a preliminary investigation was conducted by the Abudu Division, the case was transferred to State CID (Criminal Investigation Department), Benin City.

    “The State CID’s operatives, while collaborating with the vigilance group members in the area, arrested two suspects: Godspower Chukwuedo and Christopher Nwachukwu.The two suspects made statements to the police, and confessed that they were sent by Chukwuyem Jonah, a native doctor, who lives in Iru community, near Abudu, Edo State, to go after Faith Omodon in the farm and kidnap her, to enable them to collect ransom from her rich father, with the promise of paying them N30,000.

    “The suspects further confessed that they were resisted by Faith Omodon, and in the process, they strangled her. The confessional statements of the two suspects (Godspower Chukwuedo and Christopher Nwachukwu), led to the arrest of the native doctor at Iru community on May 7, 2024.”Godspower Chukwuedo and Christopher Nwachukwu said they did not know the undergraduate before, but the native doctor took them to the farm, and also told them that she would come home during Easter celebration.”

    Adegboye also cautioned parents and guardians to be wary of where they would send their children and wards, while hinting that investigation was ongoing by policemen to recover the victim’s body, with the suspects to also be charged to court.

    Nwachukwu, a farmer, who was based in Agbor, told reporters, that Chukwuedo, a Benin-based bricklayer, contracted for the job.

    Chukwuedo said after strangling the victim, they left her unconscious with the native doctor in the farm, but made away with her mobile phone and the motorcycle.

  • Varsity student, nine others held for cybercrime

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 10 persons for alleged cybercrime, popularly called `Yahoo, Yahoo’, at  Ojodu Berger, Lagos.

    The state NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Tajudeen Balogun, told reporters yesterday that they were arrested following a tip-off.

    He alleged that the gang leader  was a 100-level Accounting student of a private university in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

    Balogun said the suspects were between the ages of 19 and 29.

    He alleged that one Toyota Camry saloon car with number-plate EPE406FN, nine laptops, 16 phones, two debit cards and an Airtel modem were recovered from them.

    Also recovered from them were one piece of Orange Wi-Fi, 11 laptop chargers, two extension boxes, and substances suspected to be Indian hemp and charms.

    Balogun said: “On May 22, the state command got a piece of information about a case of abduction, assault and cybercrime.

    “This was as a result of a tip-off by a victim, Demini Emmanuel.

    “The victim claimed he was abducted, assaulted and forced to engage in cybercrime by the suspects since January 2019.

    “The command swung into action and arrested 10 suspects at 14b, Animashaun Street, inside Progressive Estate, Ojodu Berger, Lagos’’.

    He said the suspects would be  prosecuted.

    Balogun advised parents, landlords and the public to  report suspicious activities in their areas to the Corps and other security agencies.

    The 22-year-old gang leader, said he had been in the business for more than a year, stressing that he made more than N3million between January and April.

    He said the other suspects were found in his house because they were learning the `job’ from him.

    The suspect said he did not kidnap them as alleged by the NSCDC officials.

  • Varsity student allegedly commits suicide

    A 300 level student of Computer Science, Imo State University, Owerri, Jennifer Agomuo, has allegedly committed suicide after stabbing her boyfriend simply identified as Johnson.

    Sources said the duo were always together on the campus and at social gatherings before Jennifer started suspecting her boyfriend of cheating on her.

    The Nation learnt that the incident occurred in a hostel at Aladinma Alliance area of the university on Wednesday night.

    A source said the female undergraduate poisoned herself after stabbing her boyfriend, who she thought was dead.

    The source said: “A student in our school has committed suicide. She was studying Computer Science and was supposed to graduate next year. She was in third year.

    “She poisoned herself after stabbing her boyfriend. She thought that she had killed her boyfriend and out of fear, she ran to her hostel and drank poison.

    “Her boyfriend, who was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, did not die. He is recuperating.”

    Confirming the incident, the university spokesman, Obi Njoku, said the school was in a state of shock and confusion over the “sad and irritating news.”

  • Varsity student dies in Bayelsa

    A female 100-level student of the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, has died following a drug-induced sex.

    The student reportedly engaged in a sex romp with her lover, a male undergraduate student, after they both took sex-enhancing drugs suspected to be tramadol and other hard substances.

    She reportedly passed out and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where she died later.

    Varsity student remanded for ‘murder’

    A 34-year-old student of Osun State University, Osogbo, Akanbi David, was yesterday remanded in Ilesa Prison by an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for the alleged murder of his colleague, Amodu Kazeem.
    The Chief Magistrate, Olusola Aluko, said he ordered the remand of the accused due to the magnitude of the offence.
    The accused’s plea was not taken by the court.
    The magistrate, however, adjourned till May 5.
    The Prosecutor, ASP Mireti Wilson, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 16 at 5pm at Oke-Baale, Osogbo.
    Willson said the accused conspired with one person ,now at large, to stab Kazeem with a knife in his chest.
    He said the accused had a disagreement with the deceased over a business deal.

    Police: Varsity student kills colleague

    The police in Osun State have said a 300-Level Civil Engineering student of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Kazeem Ige, was allegedly stabbed to death by a 400-Level Physics Electronic student, Adekunle.
    This was contained in a statement by the spokesman, Folashade Odoro, in Osogbo.
    Odoro said Ige (24) was allegedly killed during a fight in the hostel on Monday night.
    She said the case was reported at Oja-Oba Police Division by another student, Seyi Bamigbayan (28) at 9 pm on Monday night.
    The spokesman said Ige was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.
    She said his body has been deposited at Asubiaro Hospital, Osogbo for autopsy.

    Gunmen kill 300-level Ondo varsity student

    Gunmen have killed a 300-Level student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba(AAU),Akungba-Akoko.
    Yemi Akinbamiwa was a son of a popular food vendor in Ondo town.
    He was said to have been shot by the assailants on Akure Road on Monday as he was running an errand.
    Eyewitnesses said he held a black nylon bag that reportedly contained money and was approached by the hoodlums who rode on a motorbike.
    The late Akinbamiwa was said to have been told to release the money but he resisted and was shot at close range.
    The hoodlums reportedly took the money and escaped, shooting sporadically into the air to scare people away.
    Few minutes later, a detachment of police from the Special Anti-Robbery Division of Yaba Police Station, arrived at the scene.
    The victim’s remains were said to have been taken to the State Specialist Hospital morgue by the police.
    Police spokesman Femi Joseph could not be reached for comments.
