  • Varsity honours former VC

The Governing Council of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, on Thursday, held a send-off dinner in honour of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Femi Mimiko.

The event was held at the Royal Bird Hotel in Akure and was attended by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, top government officials and members of the university community.

The institution’s Pro-chancellor, Ambassador Oladele Akadiri, praised the honoree for what he called visionary and purposeful leadership rendered to earn the varsity global awards.

Akadiri said the Council would miss the intellectual contributions of Prof Mimiko at its meetings, but said the achievements of the former VC would be a reminder of the Prof Mimiko’s tenure in the administration of the school.

The Pro-chancellor said the rating of AAUA as the best state-owned university by the United States Transparency International Standards in 2014 was not unconnected with the modest efforts of the Prof Mimiko-led administration.

In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, described his predecessor as a scholar of excellence and astute administrator, saying his effort to improve the rating of the school was commendable.

Ajibefun said Prof Mimiko laid foundation for excellence, robust scholarship and sustainable academic culture, pledging to build on them.

Gov Mimiko praised his brother for justifying the confidence reposed in him when he was appointed as VC, noting that the ex-VC promoted the good name of the family by demonstrating quality leadership without compromising standard.

He stressed that the Ondo State Government deliberately ensured access through introduction of affordable school fees to quality education and health services without compromising standard, thus settling the age-old conflict between access and quality service.

The governor also pledged continued funding to the school, saying: “Despite the shrinking resources, we will still do what is necessary to sustain the existing standard. We will give the new VC the necessary support. I will not influence admission procedure or staff promotion. We will support you to continue the merit-driven admission.”

Responding, Prof Mimiko thanked the governing council for the honour, saying the achievements were made possible by God. He urged his successor to avoid distraction in the administration of the university.

The guest speaker at the event and Prof Mimiko predecessor, Prof Funso Akere, spoke on Effective university administration in Nigeria and the challenge of leadership.

Highlight of the event was presentation of gift to the honoree.

  • ASUU demands reversal of sack of UNIOSUN’s VC, registrar, bursar

ASUU demands reversal of sack of UNIOSUN’s VC, registrar, bursar

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has intervened in the crisis rocking the multi-campus Osun State University, Osogbo.

The body called for immediate reversal of the indefinite suspension of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Okesina, the registrar and bursar by the governing council led by its Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin.

At a briefing at the weekend in Osogbo, the state capital, ASUU Coordinator, Ibadan zone and Chairman, University of Ibadan branch, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, said it was regrettable that the governing council acted beyond the scope of power granted to it by the law establishing the university.

He said it was “urgently necessary” to address the briefing, which was attended by some ASUU leaders, including the union’s national treasurer, Dr.Ademola Aremu, the ASUU chairman at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Dr.Oyebamiji Oyegoke, and his counterpart for Osun State University branch, Dr. Oluseye Abiona, to ensure sanity was restored into the university system.

Ajiboye, who insisted that only the Visitor, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, could suspend or sack Okesina, said ASUU had studied the law establishing the university and concluded that the governing council overstepped its boundary.

He warned that the governing council should not create unnecessary crisis in the institution, saying what was expected of the council was championing improved welfare of the university workers by ensuring that their salary arrears were paid to boost their morale.

In the interest of equity and fairness, Ajiboye advised that the status quo should remain within the university while the visitation panel set up by the government should be allowed to do its work.

The ASUU Coordinator said: “Since the crisis is between the management and the council what should be done is for both parties involved to submit themselves to the visitation panel and wait for recommendations.

“It has never happened in the history of any university that a VC was sacked by the council. The governance crisis is taking a dangerous dimension and what message are we sending across to the world. Prof. Olawoyin is laying a bad precedent in this case.

“Prof Olawoyin is diminishing Uniosun and Prof. Basir Okesina. What if after the conclusion of work of the visitation panel, the VC is not found guilty, what becomes of his person?

“So, ASUU is demanding immediate reversal of suspension and let the status quo ante remain while the visitation panel carries out its assignment.

“In the spirit of equity and fairness, the suspended VC should return to his office since the governing council is a party in this issue. Let the commissioner for education take over and save the university from further crisis and ensure there is sanity in the system. Let the law establishing Uniosun be respected.”

Prof. Jelili Oguntola Alamu has been appointed the Acting VC while the accountant now acts as bursar and another senior office in the non academic has taken over as the registrar.

  • VC visits community

Akungba Akoko, AAUA’s host community, hosted the new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, and other principal officers at the Alale palace.

The Regent, Princess Oluwatoyin Omosowon, and chiefs of the community, received them.

Ajibefun thanked the community for the warm reception and the cooperation the university has enjoyed over the years.  He also called for its support.

“I am here as Vice Chancellor to add to the work on the ground. I want to solicit your continuous support. The way you have supported my predecessor, Prof. Femi Mimiko that he succeeded, I am also seeking your support so that I will be successful in office too,” he said.

Princess Omosowon thanked the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for not holding back resources from the university; and prayed for the outgone Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mimiko, for the judicious use of the institution’s funds. She prayed for a successful tenure for the new Vice Chancellor, assuring him of the community’s   support.

  • Accommodation is our major problem, says VC

Despite the N2 billion 2014/2015 NEEDS Assessment fund released by the Federal Government for hostel intervention, the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna) is yet to address accommodation challenges, said its Vice Chancellor, Prof Musbau Akanji.

Akanji spoke after the matriculation of 4,250 students admitted for the 2014/2015 academic session at the Gidan Kwano campus of the institution.

He, however, said the university would be tackling the hostel deficiency through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) approach  with private developers to construct halls of residence under the Build, Occupy and Transfer (BOT).

Akanji said only 2,250 students out of the population of 15,000 are accommodated in the available halls of residence in the institution with the remaining 12, 750 living off campus.

“We are hoping that, if this programme works out, it will substantially address the issue of accommodation of students. We have about 15, 000 students, but currently, we are only able to accommodate 2,250 students,” he said.

He called for more funds for university education to enable the various institutions increase their intake.

About 25 per cent of the 1.6 million applicants that applied through the Joint Admission Marticulation Board (JAMB) for 2014/2015 academic session were given admission by various public and private universities.

“With increased funding from the government, more number of students can be admitted by universities,” Akanji said.

The VC said out of the 10, 000 that applied for admission for 2014/2015 session , 6,650 sat for the Post-UTME. 4,743 were offered admission among whom 4,250 students finally scaled through.

He urged the students to shun all acts contrary to the rules and regulations of the institution, such as examination malpractice, frauds of all kinds, financial racketeering, cultism, fighting, theft, assault, rumour mongering and illicit drug dealing.

Against this backdrop, he said a Commitee Against Anti-Social Activities (CASA) has been put in place to counsel and monitor students’ activities on the university’s two campuses; Bosso and Gidan Kwano, where they could seek guidance.
