Fight onboard plane: VDM, Mr Jollof risk jail, says NCAA

Social media activist, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), and comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, aka Mr Jollof, may face criminal prosecution following their clash aboard a United Nigeria Airlines flight on Monday.

There was chaos on the Asaba-Lagos flight after what started as an argument between the two turned into a fight.

According to a viral video, crew members and passengers rushed to intervene when the two men exchanged blows.

Verydarkman posted a video on his Facebook page claiming he had dealt with Mr Jollof during the altercation.

His post reads, “I don chop Jollof father for inside the plane. He bit me, man, wey de bite,” insisting that he confronted the comedian.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has condemned the act, noting that the duo would be sanctioned.

In a post on X, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, stated that the conduct of the two influencers aviation violates safety rules.

“There is no tolerance for unruly behaviour aboard an aircraft. Both individuals will face the full strength of the law,” he wrote, adding that it was “even more shameful” given that the pair often preach responsible conduct to millions of followers.

He said the airline was expected to formally report the matter to the NCAA, after which legal and regulatory actions would follow.

“There is no tolerance for unruly behaviour aboard an aircraft. Both individuals will face the full strength of the law,” the spokesperson tweeted.

He also highlighted the responsibility of the influencers, saying: “It is even more shameful when one considers both of them partners in educating their millions of followers to avoid unruly behaviour.”

The spokesperson noted that the airline should report the incident to the NCAA, and legal action would follow.

“The actions of both men put the safety of all other passengers and the crew at risk. It also put the safety of the aircraft at risk,” he stated.

He stressed the regulator’s commitment to passenger education, stating, “The NCAA has exerted a lot of energy and resources in educating passengers about the dangers of unruly behaviour and its consequences. In this case, no matter what led to the fracas, there is no excuse that makes it acceptable.”

Investigation, however, indicated that Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Act, 2022, criminalises such action.

Under Section 84, acts of violence on board an aircraft that could endanger its safety attract a minimum fine of N2 million or up to five years’ imprisonment, or both.

Section 85 also reads that, “Whoever, while onboard an aircraft, interferes with a crew member and such interference impedes the performance of the crew member’s duties, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not more than N200,000 or imprisonment for a term of at least two months or both.”

While the NCAA assesses the situation, VDM and Mr Jollof are likely to pay the fine or face jail terms.

Meanwhile, United Nigeria Airlines claimed it had handed the duo over to airport security after its crew intervened and deboarded them to maintain safety and order.

This was made known in a statement on the airline’s official X account on Monday.

The statement read:  “United Nigeria Airlines confirms that an altercation occurred between two passengers, identified as Martins Vincent Otse ‘VeryDarkman’ and Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi ‘Mr. Jollof’, during the boarding of Flight UN0523 at Asaba International Airport on the morning of 17 November 2025.”

“In full compliance with global aviation safety protocols, our crew responded immediately and professionally to de-escalate the situation. Both passengers were deboarded without delay to ensure the safety, comfort, and security of all other passengers and crew members. They were subsequently handed over to airport security for further investigation.”

Reaffirming its safety policies, the carrier added that it placed the highest priority on safety and maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any conduct that threatens the security or well-being of passengers or crew.

“After all standard procedures were completed, the flight departed safely while the passengers involved in the altercation were still with the authorities,” the statement added.

The airline further assured travellers of its continued commitment to high operational standards, adding: “We remain firmly committed to providing a safe, respectful, and secure travel experience across our network.”

The clash is believed to be an extension of weeks-long online hostilities between the two personalities.

Incidents of unruly behaviour, especially physical clashes, have become a spectacle in the aviation sector in the last few months. This has also become a source of concern to passengers and stakeholders who demand decisive action to forestall recurrence.

It would be recalled that renowned Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, was caught up in an altercation which occurred on Monday, August 5, 2025, during boarding procedures for a ValueJet Airlines flight (Flight VK 201) headed to Lagos.

In a related development,  Ms. Comfort Emmanson was on August 10, 2025, removed from an Ibom Air flight from Lagos to Uyo after refusing to turn off her phone as instructed by crew members.

The situation escalated when she became physically aggressive, striking a flight attendant, and had to be restrained and escorted off the aircraft at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

  • Portable, VDM are chronic clout chasers, says Kehinde Ajose

Portable, VDM are chronic clout chasers, says Kehinde Ajose

Media entrepreneur and author Kehinde Ajose has weighed in on the escalating feud between controversial singer Portable and social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM), labeling both individuals as chronic clout chasers, who manufacture drama for public attention.

The long-simmering beef between the two personalities recently boiled over, with both releasing diss tracks aimed at each other. The conflict reportedly intensified after Portable accused VDM of using the tragic case of the late singer Mohbad for attention. In retaliation, VDM released a diss track, and Portable quickly fired back with his own, continuing the public spectacle.

Reacting to the development, Ajose, a visibility strategist, stated that the feud is a calculated strategy for relevance. “Yes, VDM started on a good note, but most of what he does these days is pure clout chasing,” Ajose observed. “He understands that attention is currency and deliberately looks for issues that will keep him in the news. The same thing applies to Portable,  he is far more popular for being controversial than for his music. They are both chronic clout chasers.”

Ajose elaborated that this model is built on manufactured outrage rather than talent. “This isn’t about artistic rivalry; it’s a spectacle designed for online engagement. They are masters at creating outrage to stay in the headlines because their brands are built on a foundation of controversy, which is a very volatile and unsustainable model.”

The feud’s origins trace back several months, but the recent exchange has brought their methods into sharp focus. Ajose concluded with a warning: “The audience eventually tires of drama without substance. The real challenge for figures like them is to transition from being famous for being controversial to being respected for a tangible skill. Right now, this feud is just noise distracting from any real craft.”

  • NAFDAC warns against incitement by social media influencer VDM

NAFDAC warns against incitement by social media influencer VDM

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has strongly condemned what it described as inciting and misleading statements made by a social media influencer targeting the federal hovernment’s regulatory enforcement at the Onitsha Bridge Head Market.

The agency maintained that it would allow security agencies to carry out their duties regarding the role played by social media influencer, Very Dark Man (VDM), who accused it of extortion and theft.

VDM had alleged that the agency forced some traders to pay ₦700,000 for a service they were unaware of.

He also threatened legal action in the video shared on Instablog9ja’s Instagram page.

However, while urging law-abiding Nigerians to continue with their legitimate businesses, the Director General (DG), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye specifically addressed the role of the social media influencer, saying, What this perpetrator has done is to openly tell his audience to defy the regulatory processes of NAFDAC.

“This follows an enforcement operation carried out under the authority of the Office of the National Security Adviser.”

She said NAFDAC will leave it to law enforcement to determine whether the individual has violated any statutes, especially those related to incitement through digital content.

In a statement on Monday, the DG warned that the content of trending videos by the said influencer, which seek to incite traders at the market against lawful government action, could potentially constitute a breach of the Cybercrime Act.

She was silent on the N700,000 fee the alleged traders were made to pay to the agency

The DG, however, noted that her agency has consequently alerted the public and security agencies to the nature and implications of such incitement.

She recalled the Agency’s recent enforcement actions at three major Open Drug Markets across the country, Idumota (Lagos), Ariaria (Aba), and Bridge Head (Onitsha) where coordinated operations were carried out between February 9 and March 27, 2025, that led to the seizure and destruction of banned, expired, falsified, and substandard narcotic drugs valued at over ₦1 trillion.

“These were unregistered, diverted donation drugs, illicit narcotics, and controlled substances stored and distributed in environments that failed to meet even the minimum requirements of Good Storage and Distribution Practices.

“More critically, these premises were unregistered with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), in clear contravention of extant federal laws,” she said.

She also emphasized that NAFDAC’s enforcement role is grounded in its mandate as defined by the Act establishing the Agency which includes regulation and control over the importation, exportation, manufacture, advertisement, distribution, sale, and use of regulated products, ranging from drugs and food to cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, and chemicals.

“As part of this mandate, we conduct routine inspections of production, distribution, and sales outlets of regulated products, as well as post-approval surveillance.

“Our operations are also intelligence-driven, responding to petitions, reports, and complaints from the public,” the DG noted.

She also reminded the public that the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act (C34) expressly prohibits the sale of drugs in markets, kiosks, motor parks, roadside stalls, and in vehicles, noting that based on this law, its enforcement action at Bridge Head Market was justified and necessary.

According to Adeyeye, due to interventions by state governments, a moratorium was granted to traders to relocate to a Coordinated Wholesale Centre with proper infrastructure for regulated activities.

“The market was reopened on March 9, 2025, and over 2,500 traders occupying 3,500 shops have resumed operations, having complied with the necessary regulatory procedures,” she said.

Clarifying that only a minority of shop owners, those dealing in outrightly banned narcotics have refused to comply, the DG explained that, “According to our database, these defaulters are at the heart of the cartel, and along with their co-conspirators, are now attempting to stoke unrest and shift attention from their crimes.

“These merchants of death, who are fueling insecurity and trafficking in fake medicines, will be identified and prosecuted.

Reaffirming NAFDAC’s mission, the DG said, “We remain committed to ensuring that all medical products, medicines, vaccines, medical devices, and more used in Nigeria are of good quality, safe, and effective.

“These efforts are vital in reducing maternal and child mortality, improving life expectancy, and protecting citizens with chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes.”

“NAFDAC is working firmly within the purview of her mandate”.

He was re-arraigned before Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja on five-count charge.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge .

Gospel musician Mercy Chinwo sues VDM for alleged defamation

Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a defamation lawsuit against blogger Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The suit stems from alleged defamatory statements by VDM on social media, accusing Chinwo of involvement in a contractual dispute and the purported diversion of $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee.

The lawsuit, filed by Pelumi Olajengbesi, Chinwo’s legal representative, seeks an order compelling VDM to delete, retract, and issue a public apology for all allegedly false and defamatory statements made against Chinwo and her brand.

In support of her claims, Chinwo furnished the court with documentary evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to substantiate that VDM’s allegations are entirely false.

On February 17, 2025, a Federal High Court in Lagos held that the arrest warrant against Ee Zee Tee over alleged fraudulent conversion subsists and adjourned the case until March 6, 2025 for the arraignment of the record label boss.

In the fresh defamation suit filed, Olajengbesi said VDM made the posts without provocation and  apparent intention of lowering the Chinwo’s estimation in the eye of right-thinking members of the society.

He told the court that the VDM’s videos and posts are false and have caused significant harm to the Chinwo’s public image, reputation, professional standing and emotional well-being.

The lawyer said VDM made the posts on his Instagram handle on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 12th and 17th February 2025 accusing Chinwo of “going behind the record label to go and collect shows, she was collecting gigs and she was not remitting money to the record label”.

In the suit, Olajengbesi said VDM posted a series of videos to millions of followers showing a “caricaturist and disdainful portrayal of the Claimant (Chinwo) as well the Defendant’s (VDM’s) bias towards the claim of Mr. EeZee T thereby deliberately ridiculing the position of the Claimant in the dispute between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T”.

“The Claimant avers that she has neither had any form of relationship with the Defendant nor was the Defendant involved in the issue between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T in any material particular.

“The Claimant avers that the statements which the Defendant made in the videos he published his Instagram page were as though the Defendant was personally involved in the issues between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T; however, these statements were not only false, but damning and injurious to the Claimant’s public image and reputation.”

The lawyer sought “an order of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to remove the defamatory posts from all his social media platforms.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to cause a retraction of the said defamatory statement in favour of the Claimant on all his social media platforms and to publish an unreserved apology to the Claimant in two widely circulated national dailies and all his social media platforms.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendants to write an unreserved apology to the Claimant and publish same in four national dailies, causing same to run for at least 14 consecutive days.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant the Sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) only as General Damages for defamation.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant, the Sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) only as Punitive and Aggravated Damages for the grossly defamatory statement.

In 2023 the activist called Ojo ignorant for the way she handled Mohbad’s case. He also charged the actor of failing to identify the boy in dreads who broke the news of Mohbad’s demise.
