  • Buhari hails Osinbajo for role in economic recovery

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday commended the qualities and competence of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Buhari, specifically praise him for the role played on the ‘CHANGE AGENDA’ and his capacity as the head of the National Economic Council (NEC) in the past three and half years.

He gave the commendation during a meeting with Ogun State traditional rulers, led by Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo.

The President was responding to the Vice President’s presentation at the meeting on the economic outlook in the country in the last three and half years and how the APC-led administration has done more with fewer resources.

The President said: “Him (Osinbajo) being the Chairman of NEC is in a very strong position to know what we are earning and what we are doing with the earnings.

‘‘I am very pleased with his vast experience and intellect. He has captured effectively what the administration has done and I commend him for playing a very great part in that. Thank you, Mr Vice President.’’

The President told the traditional rulers that in all the States he had visited so far for his re-election bid, he had taken time to explain to Nigerians the achievements, programmes and future plans of his government in the three key areas of economy, security and anti-corruption.

‘‘On the promises on security, I have mentioned repeatedly that the people of the North East appreciate our undertakings because you cannot manage a country unless it is secure. We have succeeded in that and we thank God,’’ he said.

The President noted that Nigeria has attained food security under his watch, adding that many farmers have testified that fertilisers are now available and affordable.

‘‘Fighting corruption is the most difficult under our system but still, we have not given up. We are steadfast in our determination to ensure that those who abuse trust are brought before the law and punished,’’ he said.

President Buhari appealed to the traditional rulers to prevail on their subjects to be law abiding and show respect to constituted authority during and after the elections.

‘‘I am happy for what you have done on voter education so that your people can choose whoever they like from whatever party,’’ he said.

In his remarks, Oba Gbadebo assured the President that Ogun people will give him more than 60 percent of the votes in the State to guarantee his re-election and that of their son, the Vice President, on February 16.

He hinged Ogun people’s support for President Buhari on his commitment to the welfare of the masses, reflected in the array of well-conceived, executed and various ongoing projects that abound all over the country.

The Oba announced that Ogun State has been a major beneficiary of Federal Government projects, listing the Lagos-Ibadan expressway that passes through 80 percent of the State, Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge fast train, the latest technology in train movement the world over, among others.

‘‘It was my privilege to have been part of the passengers on the trial run on the Lagos-Abeokuta stretch of the rail on Friday, February 8, 2019. Generations unborn will continue to thank your Administration for taking the bull by the horns,’’ Oba Gbadebo said.

  • Why churches must condemn corruption, by Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday urged the church to step up its condemnation of corruption and illegally acquired wealth.

Osinbajo lamented that corruption has been the country’s biggest problem and causes a multitude of child deaths yearly.

He warned that Christians would fail to positively influence the country unless they unless they committed themselves to living like the biblical salt of the earth.

Osinbajo was the guest minister at a special service of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)’s The Open Door Parish, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos.

The Vice President’s longtime friend Aina Ololade Salami is the Pastor-in-charge of the parish.

Speaking on the topic The church and the destiny of the nation, Osinbajo berated Church leaders who, through their teachings, “sometimes give the impression that there is no need for hard work.”

He urged Christendom to remember the Biblical command for people to pray for their leaders like the Israelites prayed for Esther before she met the Persian King Ahasuerus and saved her people from genocide.

Osinbajo said: “…I do not hear very often that the church criticises corruption and corrupt people. I don’t hear very often that there is condemnation, because, when you look at it, the greatest problem that our country has is corruption.

“People stealing directly from the treasury is what exposed in so many cases that there is so much poverty in the land, the leadership stealing directly from the treasury.

“The greatest cause of death is corruption because when you look at the number of children who die between the ages of zero and five, who should have been provided with medical care and the money has been stolen, some people say oh there are many kidnappings, many this and that, but the greatest cause of death in our country is corruption.

“If you look at poverty, from 2012, almost 110,000 children die of diarrhea-related illness yearly. Why? The resources that should be used for medical care is stolen.

“So, if the church does not stand up and condemn corruption, if the church doesn’t say, ‘if we suspect that you this man, you are a public officer but you have money that you shouldn’t have we’ll ostracise you’, then it’ll be difficult for us to play our role.”

He advised Christians worried by the idea of an Islamist agenda not to be afraid but to dutifully obey the Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20.

Osinbajo said: “I was saying to a group of Christian leaders the other day that I as a pastor, long before I was appointed Vice President, I attended the (RCCG) Holy Ghost Service regularly, as a matter of fact before I became Vice President I never missed the Holy Ghost Service once in 15 years, not once. I’ve missed the Holy Ghost Service now maybe once or twice.

“As Vice President I attend, even in Abuja, all of the (Christian) gatherings and these are big gatherings at the Abuja National Stadium.

“Even look at the Holy Ghost Night, it’s televised all over the world, I as Vice President am standing there everybody sees me all over the world.

“I said to the leaders, can you imagine a situation where President Muhammadu Buhari every month, gathers in Sokoto, with hundreds of thousands of Mullahs, what would we say? What would the leaders say? There would be panicking.”

The Vice President explained he has been able to survive in politics without compromising his religious beliefs by trying to live as salt of the earth.

He narrated an incident while he was Lagos State Attorney-General when he held a meeting in a room filled with cigarette smoke and how God helped him to understand his role as the biblical salt.

Osinbajo said: “But, I was so upset by the fact that there was so much smoke and when I was leaving the place my entire body smelled of cigarettes; my hair, my clothes, my entire body.

“As I was leaving, the first thought I had was that why should I be in the company of these people who are smoking cigarettes and pipes? Why? Is it not wrong? Should I be in their company?

“After all I’m a Christian, a born again Christian. A pastor. And then the Lord spoke to me: ‘You’re the salt. If you don’t get into the soup, what will happen if you don’t get into the soup?

“It struck me immediately that my role was not to look condescendingly at what may be the problem.

“My role was to get involved in it, fight as much as I could with the power and the grace of the almighty God and God enabled us at the time and we were able to do something.”

Several dignitaries at the service included the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi; Olubeshe of Ibeshe Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya; member representing Ikorodu federal constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Jimi Benson and Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Sanai Bolanle Agunbiade, among others.

  • Edo headteacher gets house gift

In June last year, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was in Edo State to perform the groundbreaking for the construction of 1800 housing units at the Emotan Gardens in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. Emotan Gardens is a 70-hectare estate developed by the Edo State Government and Mixta Nigeria, a private estate developer.

Osinbajo handed over keys to the first occupant of the Emotan Gardens, Mrs. Noragbon Osaru, the headteacher of Emotan Primary School. The building was a gift to Mrs. Osaru from Governor Godwin Obaseki for emerging the second-best school administrator in Nigeria and best teacher in the state.

So far, 100 houses in the estate have been completed. Other infrastructure expected to feature in the estate are artificial lake, shopping malls, schools and police station.

Governor Godwin Obaseki said the house was to commend Mrs. Osaru for her commitment to educating Edo children and encouraging other teachers in the EdoBEST programme.

Osinbajo, while presenting the keys, said he has visited Edo State to inaugurate many projects such as the fertiliser plant in Auchi and the Bénin Industrial Park.

Osinbajo urged Mrs Osaru to continue to impact positively in the lives of the pupils under her care even as he expressed optimism that the housing units would be completed in no distant time.

Obaseki said the delivery of the first building in record time was in fulfillment of his electioneering promises of creating jobs and providing affordable housing for the people of the state.

The governor said his administration started a new paradigm in providing affordable housing for citizens of the state by ensuring that 80 percent of materials used for the building of the houses were sourced locally from the state.

He said: “This is cluster one of Emotan Gardens, whose foundation you laid a few months ago. The first 100 of the houses are ready for inauguration. As a government, we have bought 10 of the houses, while about 50 of the houses have been sold to the public.

“We hope Emotan Garden will be our flagship into creating modern house style in our state.

“You will recall during my electioneering campaign I did promise that we are going to make Edo State an economic hub. I said we are going to create a minimum of 200,000 jobs in my first time in office and we expected that these jobs will be created from areas like agriculture, construction and the manufacturing sectors.

“But we realised also that housing is very key to creating jobs and that was one of the reasons why one of the first thing to do was to restructure Edo State Housing and Property Development Company.

“We reenacted the law setting it up, we got a new management and this is the evidence of the reforms we have made in that agency,” he said.

“We believed that we are starting a new paradigm in the position of affordable housing and we expect that these houses will sell from about N3m to no more than N12m and it will truly be affordable,” he said.

Mrs. Osaru, who pledged to do more for her pupils, also got a gift package of N1 million and a brand new car.

She said: “I feel highly honoured by this rare reward from the governor who promised us months ago that he will reward hardworking teachers in the state and I am so happy to be favoured by his administration that believes in merit and hard work.

“I also wish to thank the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, who is implementing the governor’s vision in the basic education sector with a high sense of professionalism.

“I was interviewed and drilled by the officials of government who found me worthy after the assessment, to represent Edo State at the national level and I emerged second best school administrator in Nigeria.”

Osinbajo also flagged off the Federal Government school feeding programme at Eyean primary school.

  • Helicopter crash: APC diaspora felicitates with Osinbajo

The APC Committee of Diaspora Chairmen Forum has felicitated with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and nine others for surviving a helicopter crash on Saturday in Kabba, Kogi.

The committee message was contained in a statement made available to press by the Spokesman of the group Hon. Ayoola Lawa on Sunday.

The vice president and nine others had on Saturday escaped unhurt when a hired helicopter conveying them to Kabba, Kogi state, crash-landed.

The Statement reads, “The Nigerian state and people would have been in national mourning if not for Divine intervention. We have every reason to rejoice and be thankful to Almighty God”.

“We call for an immediate and full investigation into the possible cause(s) of this shocking incident by the appropriate authorities in order to avert future occurrence. We believe that Nigeria has the requisite experience to do this thoroughly”.

“But if necessary should employ best hands in the business and deploy every needed facility to ensure that the cause(s) are found, and that necessary lessons are learnt to prevent future recurrence”.

“We also implore all Nigerians irrespective of the political affiliation, faith or ethnicity to be cautious in separating fake news on the incident. This is a critical time in the anal of our Nation, especially as Nigeria approaches another election circle and we Nigerians home and abroad should continue to pray for special grace of Almighty God for Nation”.

“Nigeria is an important country to Nigerians and to the world, and any unwholesome occurrence here will have far-reaching impact that forum declares”.

The minister inspected, among others, the Bolade-Oshodi, Iju-Fagba, Ijoko rail tracks to assess the laying of rail tracks on the axis

”They have done a lot in laying of tracks between Abeokuta, Itori, Papalanto, Kajola, Ijoko towards Lagos corridor.

  • Osinbajo endorses APC candidates in Edo

Osinbajo said that  Edo people’s votes for the Next Level Agenda of the APC will allow for the sustenance of effective allocation of the nations’ resources.

He explained that the ruling APC government at the federal level has been able to do more despite less resources due to the high premium the government places on accountability and probity.

“Corruption is one of the reasons our country is backward, Buhari is not corrupt and he will not allow anybody to steal our money,” the VP said.

Osinbajo listed the creation of more jobs, improved power supply and other infrastructure as well as credit intervention as some of the things that the APC intends to do through its Next Level agenda.

He assured that the federal government is increasing the number of N-Power beneficiaries from 500,000 to one million, adding that the Entrepreneur Bank will money available for youths interested in business.

He further said that the federal government was working with the Edo government to establish its own independent power plant to support the state’s economic development, and urged the electorates to vote for the party’s candidates vying for different positions in the forthcoming elections to enable the APC-led government consolidate on its achievements.

Earlier, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, expressed appreciation to Edo people in Ikboba-Okha local council which has the largest turnout of voters in the state, and said he was counting on them to ensure victory for candidates of the APC in the 2019 elections.

“Ikpoba-Okha has about 260,000 voters, so I am counting on you to deliver all our candidates in the elections,” the governor said.

  • FG mulls entrepreneur bank bill —Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal Government has plans to establish an Entrepreneur Bank to provide flexibility in provision of facilities to businesses.

Osinbajo disclosed this while fielding questions from a cross-section of women traders at a programme tagged `Next Level Conversation’ on Monday in Abuja.

The women, who were mostly entrepreneurs, were drawn from the education, environment, agriculture, real estate, hospitality among other sectors.

The vice president said that the issue of giving cheap loans to small businesses had featured prominently in the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

“We have been able to deal to some extent with small and micro businesses; we have TraderMoni, MarketMoni, FarmerMoni; which are basically very small credit schemes.

“We are also looking at an Enterprise Bank or an Entrepreneur Bank which is one of the types of establishment we are looking at.

“We think there is a need for a bank that will be a bit more nimble about entrepreneurship; a bank that has a bit more flexibility.

“That is why we are talking about Entrepreneur Bank; of course, we will need a bill in the National Assembly. In the meantime, we think we can start with a bond to put a lot around it without necessarily building another big bureaucracy,’’ he said.

Osinbajo said there was need to properly fund education as efforts were being made to get the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to also fund the private sector.

He reiterated that the issue of funding education lied with the Federal, State and Local Governments.

The vice president added that the Federal Government would collaborate with state and local governments to curb multiple taxation which had adverse effect on businesses. (NAN)

  • More corrupt people will be jailed – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has vowed that more corrupt people will go to jail if President Muhammadu Buhari is reelected.
Osinbajo said that is why the corrupt elements had regrouped and  desperate to regain  power.
He said the Buhari administration would not quit power for the thieves
He made the pledge on Sunday during his door-to-door campaign in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, Lagos State.
Although a Sunday visit, traffic stood still in the area as thousands of residence including party faithfuls, supporters, market person and Arewa Community, trooped out to receive the vice president.
Osinbajo, the vice presidential of All Progressives Congress (APC), who was in the area to canvass for votes, also visited various markets and house.
At Ifako, the vice president told party supporters that the major  issues to be addressed in the next level are more jobs for the youths, more power supply, and provision of infrastructure. We are going to complete Lagos-Kano Rail, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Second Niger Bridge, he assured.
He said “the  difference between us and PDP is that we don’t steal government resources. We use it for the people. We earn less and we spent more on the welfare of the people than the previous government.
“Everybody know Buhari is an honest man. He will not steal public fund. We shall continue to fight corruption so that we can have enough money to provide infrastructure. We have to build on the foundation we have laid.
“You should vote for APC because it is the only party that can do the job. We should not allow PDP to return to power.”
At Iju-Ishaga rally, the vice president told the crowd that the next level will be much better than today. More power will be available to the people and there would be more infrastructure. He said “too much corruption have retarded our progress. That is why Buhari is fighting corruption. If there is no corruption, there would be more money to carry out developmental projects.
“Buhari will fight for young and old. He will not allow anybody to steal public funds.
“Government will decentralised power so that there would be adequate and efficient distribution of power in the country. Government will participate in power supply. “
He said there would  be adequate electricity supply for the household artisans, corporate organisations and business enterprises.
At the central abbatoir,  Agege, Osinbajo was ushered in by the Hausa/Fulani with the slogan Said Baba Sai Osinbajo, 4+4. The vice president assured them that under President Buhari no one would be allowed to steal public fund as was the case during PDP regime.
The campaign train moved to Kola market along Lagos – Abeokuta road where he assumed the audience that the Buhari government would continue to empower traders and farmers with interest free loans.
  • Attack on TraderMoni: Obasanjo ignorant or mischievous – Presidency

The office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday replied the former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism of the TraderMoni scheme introduced by the current administration.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Laolu Akande, said that the former President was either ignorant or mischievous with his criticism of the scheme.

He said “The statement purportedly attributed to former president Olusegun Obasanjo regarding Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, and the Federal Government’s TraderMoni microcredit scheme if, indeed true and accurate, is most unfortunate, according to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande.

“It is either that the former leader is ignorant of the true workings of Trader Moni and the role of the Vice President in its implementation or perhaps he is on a mischievous mission.”

He said that the former President has demonstrated “a surprising but complete misunderstanding of the workings of TraderMoni, that is if we assume there is no mischief intended. “

“Firstly, the Vice President does not personally distribute money during his visits to the markets. He goes there to assess the progress of the implementation and to create awareness for a programme designed to meet the financing need of 2 million petty traders across the country in the first instance.

“Secondly, while one will not bother to further address the issue of timing of the implementation since such issues are now known to be political posturing, it is important to note that TraderMoni is being actively implemented across all states of the federation and the FCT. It is not only Lagos and Abuja as was insinuated.

“These petty traders at the bottom of the economic ladder, with an inventory often less than N5,000, are beneficiaries of the TraderMoni scheme which provides N10,000 collateral/interest-free loans to them, empowerment that improves their small businesses, their families, while also contributing significantly to the economy.

Read also: Obasanjo, an expired politician – Tinubu

“Thirdly, in what is certainly a curious comment, the former President has also been quoted as describing the TraderMoni scheme as idiotic. To label such people-friendly scheme as idiotic is not only an absurdity, it is also an affront to the sensibilities of these hard working Nigerians, the beneficiaries of the micro-credit scheme.

“For emphasis, the Bank of Industry implements the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, GEEP, one part of our Social Investment Programme. Enumeration Agents have been engaged to visit the markets and other points where petty traders are found to confirm that they are traders and also take their biometric information for recording purposes. After the enumeration, the N10,000 collateral free loans are then disbursed electronically through the petty traders’ phones.”

TraderMoni, he said, is designed to meet the needs of the larger population of petty traders at the bottom of the pyramid who do not meet the more stringent criteria of BVN, bank accounts, market associations, cooperatives, required for bigger Market Moni loans.

He went on “Under GEEP – which has MarketMoni, FarmerMoni and TraderMoni, at least 1.5 million Nigerians are already beneficiaries of the three-pronged approach of GEEP, while N-Power has created jobs for 500,000 young Nigerians graduates, besides non-graduates. Also, almost 300,000 Nigerians have benefitted from the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), which is given to the poorest and most vulnerable among us, and over 9.2 million school pupils are being fed a free meal daily in 26 states under the Home Grown School Feeding Programme.

“It bears repetition that higher economic growth potentials are associated with lower income inequality. This makes a most overwhelming case for welfare payments like the social investment schemes like the TraderMoni/MarketMoni schemes. Such a micro-credit scheme provides a higher rate of inclusion into the financial bracket and is crucial in lifting hardworking people out of poverty as has been the case in other countries like India and Brazil.

“Fourthly, the former president also rehashed discredited claims suggesting that TraderMoni beneficiaries were required to tender their PVCs, and questioned the timing of the implementation.

“Let me, therefore, state again that beneficiaries of TraderMoni are not required to show their Personal Voters Cards (PVCs) or any document indicating their political affiliations to qualify for the loans. This is why the enumeration is done in the open markets and wherever the traders ply their trade. This issue has been addressed several times by the Presidency in the public space. Therefore the former president’s alleged comments smirk of outright mischief as it regurgitates blatant falsehood.

“Equally, if the former president had conducted a simple act of diligence, he would have found that the National Assembly had approved this programmes and budgeted for them duly.

“When President Muhammadu Buhari came into office, one of the major hinges of this administration was to uplift the common man out of poverty and ensure the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. TraderMoni is one of such schemes conceived in 2016 under the Social Investment Programme of this administration.”

Being a former president, he said that Chief Obasanjo ordinarily should appreciate the impact of such far-reaching social investment schemes, which has provided what is now the largest social safety net for millions of Nigerians and is unprecedented in the nation’s history.

“Again, the former president’s attack on TraderMoni and the person of the Vice President is an indicator that he may be wittingly or unwittingly playing to the sinister script of the opposition party to spread falsehood and attack the social investment programmes of the Buhari administration, which champions such impactful schemes, and which is now attracting the praise and commendation of Nigerians everywhere.

“It is pertinent to state that the false allegations against TraderMoni raised again by the former president is sadly a rehash of baseless claims previously made by leading chieftains of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, whose record of profligacy, corruption and mismanagement clearly show it has no agenda to uplift the common man or improve the lives of Nigerians.

“Finally, attacks such as this on a scheme that benefits the masses of our people is a direct attack on the people and this kind of conduct does not reflect very well on a former president but is only self-denigrating and of no public value.

“As is already now obvious, the generality of the Nigerian people will not only reject that attack but will also condemn its source. We, therefore, urge the former president to be far more circumspect and more public-spirited in his utterances going forward.” he stated

  • 2019 polls and the gaffe factor

This was the week the humdrum 2019 election campaigns came alive.

First, it was the opposition gloating over President Muhammadu Buhari’s performance during the NTA town hall programme ‘The Candidates,’ where he took questions in company of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The consensus of the critics was that the president was clueless on most subjects he was asked to address – leaving Osinbajo to helpfully spring forward with illuminating answers. In fact, the Vice President’s interventions became too frequent that the anchor, Kadaria Ahmed, had to interject that Buhari ‘can speak for himself.’

Supporters of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, were all over social media sharing memes supposedly of leading All Progressives Congress (APC) figures looking stricken at the responses of their principal.

While the ‘Atikulators’ were still licking their chops in anticipation of what would happen at the forthcoming presidential debate, the ruling party’s campaign train berthed in Lokoja to a stunning welcome by another massive crowd. But what was news on social media was the image of the president tripping on the wing of his babanriga.

This was quickly celebrated by his foes as a ‘collapse’ by reason of ill-health. The APC twitter account soon hit back with an image of Barack Obama tripping on a public stage while still in office as US president. The message? The young also fall!

But even the most quick-witted of presidential defenders must have been stumped by what came next. Before a packed stadium in Warri, Delta State, Buhari while handing a flag to the APC’s governorship candidate, Great Ogboru, referred to him as ‘presidential candidate’! When a nearby official corrected him, he said ‘senatorial candidate’, before finally getting it right as gubernatorial or ‘governortorial’ candidate – depending on what you heard.

I am sure that even APC diehards with a sense of humour would have found the incident amusing, after getting over their initial embarrassment.

It was a gift from heaven to the opposition hordes starved of something to beat the president over the head with. The videos went viral with accompanying commentary that it was further evidence of the man’s unsuitability for the office he seeks.

So how much will Buhari’s public speaking skills or his being prone to gaffes affect his chances? Will they became the game-changers at this election? Not likely, if you ask me.

The jury is still out as to the impact of these debates. Around the world we have seen that they can tip things one way or the other in tight races. They can also help introduce upstart challengers to the electorate in dramatic fashion.

But that is not the case in this election. Buhari and Atiku are figures whom Nigerians are fairly familiar with. Both the president’s supporters and opponents also know he is no debater. In 2011, when he showed up for one such event he was outshone by the dazzling performance of Ibrahim Shekarau who was the candidate of the then All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

In spite of Shekarau’s oratory, he was a mere footnote at those polls dominated by Goodluck Jonathan and Buhari – two men not noted for their oratorical skills.

In environments such as ours, these debates are mere elite entertainment with little influence on electoral outcomes. The market woman who is going to vote Buhari or Atiku would not be doing so because of the candidates’ gift of gab, but based on more mundane factors.

So, we come to the gaffes. Up till date there’s a standing joke that PDP supporters entertain themselves with. They claim that at a press conference called late in 2014 to introduce his running mate, Buhari referred to Osinbanjo as ‘Osinbade’!

I am sure there were other gaffes made by the man during that electoral cycle, which people no longer remember. Depend on it that he would mangle a few more names before this campaign season is done. What is important is that, just as it had little or no impact in 2015, it’s won’t change much this time.

You only need to look at examples elsewhere to understand the limit to the damage gaffes can do. Ronald Reagan was one of America’s most popular presidents in the last four decades, but he was also a gaffe machine.

George W. Bush often stumbled from error to error – mangling syntax in the process. As for the incumbent US president Donald Trump, the less said the better. I am sure if you typed ‘gaffe’ in Google search, the image of the president would pop up! But in spite of the outrageous things he spews out of his mouth, his base of support remains rock solid.

British Prime Minister Theresa May goofed at her party’s last conference and one of her predecessors, Gordon Brown, sometimes had to have his foot extracted from his mouth.

I understand that the opposition has to do what it must do – which is hurl at Buhari whatever they think can damage him. Unfortunately for them, in the president they are confronted with one of those political foes that are difficult to handle.

They are polarising figures who are loved with as much passion as they are hated. Those who love them do so warts and all; those who despise them would remain that way even if they are transformed into angels.

Reagan, in his day, was nicknamed in the media “the Teflon President,” because of public perceptions that he was never tarnished by the controversies that arose during his administration.

According to the Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, who coined the phrase, and the Washington Post reporter Howard Kurtz, the epithet referred to Reagan’s ability to “do almost anything wrong and not get blamed for it.”

He was never respected for his intellect – indeed many in the chattering classes viewed him as very shallow. He was notorious for dozing off during cabinet meetings. But despite his well-advertised shortcomings he had some of the highest popularity ratings of any US president ever.

Just like Buhari, Reagan was an old man – almost 70 when he took office and was 78 when he left – and this was blamed for his struggles. In the last few days as the president went from poor town hall outing to campaign ground stumble, his critics started raising old questions about his age.

These were the same questions he was confronted with in 2015. Back then he was running against a man in his 50s – so the contrast was stark. This time, one of two old men – Buhari, 76, or Atiku 72 – would be elected president come February 16. Based on existing parameters they are the only ones that stand a chance. Their parties are also not about to substitute them. So, our choices are set in stone for now.

You would expect that it would cause us to leave age and move on to other things. However, this is a campaign where serious issues have become non-issues, so age has been thrust to the fore again.

Any fair discussion about age should address the fact that Atiku is also in his 70s. He may look like he’s in better health than Buhari, but the long term fitness of a septuagenarian is not something you can bet a bank on.

Recently, an attempt by a BBC reporter, Mayeni Jones, to raise the age question with the PDP flagbearer had him protesting about people discriminating against him because of his age. He said he had not stopped younger people from running. So, I suspect that this will not be comfortable territory even for Atiku.

Which safely leads me to conclude that this election will not be decided by factors like debates, gaffes and age. You can also discount any serious discussion of issues like security, corruption or the economy.

It would boil down, as often as is the case, to the personalities of the leading candidates. Over the years Buhari’s selling point has been the public belief that he’s honest and straightforward. The crowds baying ‘Sai Baba’ won’t be too bothered if tomorrow he mistakenly hands the APC flag to the President of Ghana!

As for Atiku, the best the opposition can say is that he’s the anti-Buhari: energetic, a democrat and advocate of restructuring. But the other side of being the anti-Buhari is to be branded the poster boy for sleaze.

For years he’s been struggling to separate himself from the tag of corruption hung on his neck by his foes. He would require the skills of a political Houdini to successfully deodorise himself before the electorate in just four weeks.

    Atiku goes to America

Atiku Abubakar’s surprise trip to the United States is a public relations coup for him personally and for his party. His inability to enter the US over the past 12 years has been a cloud over his head and a reference point for those who accuse him of wrongdoing. He has been able to strike off one negative and deny the ruling APC a major weapon of attack.

What I find especially impressive is the fact that details of the trip were so closely guarded and were not made public until the team was landing at Dulles Airport. It was stunning because there was no certainty that he even had a visa and thoughts that the visit would actually happen had receded in the public space.

While the trip lasts, the feel-good factor would help to energise his base. But I don’t see many defecting to his side because he finally entered Washington D.C. Crucially, I doubt whether this close to the elections there are still many undecided voters who would be sufficiently impressed by the fact that he finally got an American visa.

Unlike the 2015 polls when so much was made about the influence of Obama and the Americans on the polls, any suggestion that there could be external influence that may significantly affect the February 16 outcome, would be gross exaggeration.

To all intents this was at best a meet-and-greet trip – nothing for the PDP to get too rapturous about and nothing for the APC to mourn over.
