  • Buhari’s second term, time of harvest for Nigerians – Lawmaker

A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Victor Akande on Thursday said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term in office would be a time of harvest for Nigerians.

Akande, representing Ojo Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, it is not easy to repair in three years of what was destroyed for 16 under previous administrations.

He said that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government was moving the country to the next level of harvesting, all the sacrifices it had made.

Akande said: “After we have moved from this stage to the next level, which is a performing level, we will do better.

“When you want to plant, you clear the ground and plow it. That is what you are seeing now.

“We are sieving corrupt minded-people away.

“We have planted, we have watered it, so the people should wait because it is germinating now and it will soon be harvest time,” Akande, Chairman.

Akande, who is the Chairman, Committee on Science and Technology of the House, said that Buhari’s second term was not threatened by the candidature of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and others in the 2019 presidential election.

According to the lawmaker, the only opposition APC has is the one against itself.

Akande, who recently defected from PDP to APC on the floor of the House, said that Buhari had nothing to fear.

“We cannot be talking about the people who ruled Nigeria for 16 years and have nothing to show for it. We are talking about somebody who has only ruled for three years and is performing.

“Should we be afraid of those who looted the economy. There is nothing to fear about the judgment is for the masses.

“We cannot be fighting corruption and some people will be complaining.

“Things were spoiled for 16 years and another government now came to revive them,we will have to sacrifice and give them time.”

While carpeting those blaming APC for the harsh economy in the country, he said that the party did not cause the current poverty in the land.

He said APC had its manifestos, agenda, and blueprints, saying that these had to be followed gradually, adding that they could not be done overnight.

“We are not magicians. The United States of America did not get to where they are today overnight. Economy that has been bad for 16 years, we cannot perform magic in four years.

“We had to find the root of the problem and that is what President Muhammadu Buhari has done, that is what APC has done.
“They have tried to get to the root cause of the problem and they found a heavy corruption.

“The whole thing fall in the hands of the bourgeoisie and who now came up with propaganda to run down the government.
“The coming together of unscrupulous elements cannot bring down a working government.”

On the conduct of 2019 general elections, Akande advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) do the needful so that the people would not doubt its integrity.

Akande, who urged the politicians to desist from anything capable of jeorpadising the country’s democracy, advised voters to vote according to their conscience.

  • Ibadan film circle, others condemn video on Moji Olaiya’s burial

Ibadan film circle, others condemn video on Moji Olaiya’s burial

A group of professional filmmakers, actors, and film scholars under the aegis of Ibadan Film Circle (IFC) has described a recently released video of the burial ceremonies of the late actress, Moji Olaiya, as unethical and wicked, alleging profit as the motive of its producers.

Entitled ‘Canada to Grave’, the video was produced by Gbenga Adewusi’s Bayowa Films and Records company for his online streaming site, Yoruba Swag TV.

IFC, in a statement made available to the media, said it finds disturbing, the action of Mr. Adewusi, an independent film marketer, who allegedly made a production of the recording of the late actress’ burial with the intention of selling and profiting.

The group therefore calls on other practitioners, including members of Theater and Movie Production Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners (ANTP), and official regulatory bodies such as the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), and members of the public to join in condemning what it describes as “the wicked opportunism of Bayowa Films and others who are in league with such a heartless production.”

Meanwhile, Adewusi who got wind of the IFC’s statement is spoiling for war, claiming that the IFC misunderstood his intention. In a message to some members of the association, Adewusi demaned a retraction of the statement and an apology, failure to which he will be pressing charges.

He wrote: “I never release or plan to release any recording on VCD/DVD. My recording was showing on my Yoruba Swaga television channel 310 on CONSAT and YOUTUBE. If you don’t stop this malicious propaganda and write an apology I will take legal action against you.”

RELATED: LANRE TERIBA disrepects dress code at Moji Olaiya’s wake

But the group is of the opinion that whether or not the video is for sale via VCD or DVD, Adewusi still makes money by streaming the video on YouTube.

Adewusi, however, claimed he contributed immensely to the burial ceremonies, thus, IFC cannot accuse him of profiting from its outcome.

He said: “If you don’t know go and ask the chairman and members of Moji Olaiya burial committee. I contributed a lot to the farewell service of song and tribute night and none of you bad ‘belle’ people attended.”

According to the statement signed by IFC ‘s Administrator, Mr. Niji Akanni on Tuesday, there are no indications that the grieving family of the late actress is aware of the alleged intention behind the documentary, ‘ Canada to Grave’.
“There is no indication that the grieving family of the late actor is aware of this production; neither is there any indication that the production is going to be only for charity or support purpose,” said IFC.

ALSO: Moji Olaiya: Criticisms trail the sale of N1,500 T-shirt for burial

“By this act, Mr. Adewusi’s company has done something provocatively unethical and criminal worthy of sanctions by all stakeholders in the Nigerian creative arts industry. In its entire concept, the project is obnoxious and dehumanizing, just as the “documentary” is inappropriately titled – absolutely spiteful, vulgar, careless, sarcastic and gloating as if Ms. Olaiya’s predicament was self-inflicted and therefore worthy of jest.

We ask who sells a film on the burial of a colleague, and where is Mr. Adewusi’s sense of decency and respect for the dead? It may be argued that very little thought went into the making of the ‘project’, but weaver that so much deliberate but selfish thought went into the production.

Continuing, IFC said, “We believe that, unless otherwise determined by her immediate family, the video of Ms. Olaiya’s burial is legally the private property of her estate. It is absolutely distasteful and brutally wicked for an enterprise like Bayowa Films, its owner(s) and collaborators to engage in acts which tend to show them as reaping from the sweat, sorrow, and tears of others.

“IFC condemns Bayowa Films production of Olaiya’s burial ceremony for commercial purpose.

“IFC is committed to contributing to the education of the film sectors of the Nigerian creative industry. We use this opportunity to reject the idea of free but uncivilized market practices where anything goes, where professional decorum is only secondary to the scramble for wealth,” it stated.
The Nation, last Saturday, had described as uncreative, the title of the said video.

  • Appeal Court verdict: Further litigation will ruin PDP in 2019

Appeal Court verdict: Further litigation will ruin PDP in 2019

A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Victor Akande, on Saturday said that any further litigation would ruin the chances of the party in 2019 General Elections as many followers would have left.

Akande, representing Ojo Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, following an Appeal Court verdict in favour of  Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff.

He appealed to the Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the PDP to “sheath their swords’’ and rally round Ali Modu Sheriff.

The lawmaker, who was reacting to the Appeal Court’s ruling on Friday that declared Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic National Chairman of the PDP, said enough of litigations.

“I think this judgement should put an end to all leadership crisis rocking our party.

“We used to be one family before. This latest judgement should bring all of us together to reposition the party.

“I wish all the aggrieved leaders would sheath their swords.

“Makarfi’s faction should not proceed on any legal tussle again. What is needed now it unity before it will be too late for PDP.

“The party has suffered so much through this division and infighting. The party is daily depleting as we have lost so many members to fracas in the party.

“Just on Thursday, six out of eight of us in the Lagos Assembly including the Minority leader defected to APC. This development made me wept for the party.

“Any further legal tussle will not help the party again. It will delay the chances of coming back to power in 2019,’’ Akande, Chairman, House Committee on Central Business District said.

He urged the Makarfi group to respect the agreement by both factions to accept the ruling of the Appeal Court wherever it turned.

“How I wish the Makarfi group would come and embrace peace and rally round Sheriff to move the party forward.

“It is high time we forge ahead and forget things that set us backward,’’ he said.

Akande, who urged the party stakeholders to shun selfish interest in the interest of the party, said he did not join his colleagues who defected to APC because of his faith in the party.

NAN reports that the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt on Friday upheld Ali Modu Sheriff, as the authentic National Chairman of the PDP.

The court in the ruling, nullified the PDP National Convention held in Port Harcourt in May, 2016.

It also nullified the National Caretaker Committee of the party constituted at the convention, and held that Ali Modu Sheriff remained the National Chairman of the party.

The court said that PDP did not follow the provisions of Article 47 (3) of its Constitution in the removal of Sheriff-led National Working Committee. (NAN)

Leashed girls’ saga: Lagos Govt, Police step in

…Suspect admits act is anti-social, promises to stop

Following social media outrage on last weekend’s show by a socialite, Mike Eze-Nwalie Nwogu, aka Pretty Mike who stormed a wedding venue in Lagos with two masked girls bounded by dog chains, the Lagos State Police Command, Wednesday, quizzed the suspect who admitted his transgression and promised to desist from the act.

Nwogu, 30, and owner of ‘Club Uno’, located in Ikeja, Lagos was arrested on the orders of the Lagos State Government.

It was the second time Nwogu was stepping out in that fashion which has been condemned by many who called calling on the government to step into the matter.

Reports say the suspect was released after giving a useful statement to the police with an undertaking to desist from putting any woman or man on a leash again.

    Pretty Mike

The undertaking reads in part: “I, Mike Eze Nwalie, a.k.a Pretty Mike of 21A Magodo GRA, Luma Street, do hereby undertake to stop whatever act of putting girls on a leash or any other degrading treatment to ladies and guys.

“I am aware that such act offends the law of the State of Lagos and if I repeat it again, there will be legal act towards me.

“I undertake to issue a letter of apology to the public effective from tomorrow on all my social media platforms.”

Speaking on the matter, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem said the State Government will not tolerate any anti-social behaviour that attempts to dehumanise any citizen in the State.

Kazeem restated government’s determination to prosecute any individual or group of persons who violate any law of the State under any guise.

“The Lagos State Government is committed to the protection of the rights of all citizens including children, women and all the vulnerable persons in the State,” he said.

  • UNBECOMING OF TOKE MAKINWA

    UNBECOMING OF TOKE MAKINWA

RADIO girl Toke Makinwa will have to deal with this pain for ever. ‘To everyone who is as lost and in pain as I was, choose to believe that the sun will rise again,’ she writes in her new book, detailing her childhood griefs, but mainly about her woes before and during her 18-month marriage to fitness coach Maje Ayida.

Even if she tries to forget this bitter part of her life story, the book, ‘On Becoming’, will be there to remind her. Who knows, in these times when new entrants into the movie industry, such as Mo Abudu, seek some super stories, hers, may just come handy as another commercial-inclined story of another Nigerian woman in the mix. Her children and grandchildren will ask questions even when she is very old and gone. She will remain in the records as perhaps the most daring Nigerian OAP.

I have read some of the punch lines in the new book, and as revealing and sympathetic as they seem, my instinct does not agree with the writer’s approach and purpose which appears to be a story of triumph. I really can’t see clearly how Toke has won the game. Rather, I see her drawing the line for the next battle of her life.

The book brings another woman, Anita Solomon, who is alleged to be responsible for the crash of the union into the picture. And while Maje never wanted Toke to get pregnant for him, Anita is said to have been delivered of a son who turned a year old a few months ago. It is clear the guy does not want a permanent tie with her.

Good enough, this new author reveals all the signs of failure in her relationship with Maje, even prior to their marriage. How the eventuality became surprising to her is what I do not understand. Long before I became a man, I’d always armed myself with the saying, “your wife/husband is not the one you love, but the one who loves you.”

There are stories of men who undeniably love their wives yet cheat, going by what is generally termed man’s innate promiscuous nature; for Maje, it is clear whatever he felt or still feels for Toke, does not fit the definition of love.

Toke probably had 99.9% influence on Maje, given reason the relationship endured, but there is a one percent that defines fulfilment in a person, and as minute as it seems, it rocked the boat of this celebrity marriage, with Maje heaving a sigh of relief. Forget his diplomatic mien or show of remorse.

There is a man for every woman; only if we refuse to be moved by sight. May Ellen Ezekiel of blessed memory once said: “If you love a thing, let it go. If it comes back, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it was never meant to be.” Toke was too magnetic for Maje, and the latter had been slave to her influences while their romance lasted.

When you lure a man into ‘sympathy relationship’, it’s only a matter of time before the time bomb explodes. To me, theirs is a case of a careless woman and a dishonorable man. Toke and Maje are the proverbial two wrongs that don’t make a right.

To purge herself of the hurts, there is no need to whip up further sympathy. Unless you are talking to the younger girls on the signs to note when a man is cheating, who needs details of how you were infected with STD? I bet that today’s secondary school girls are wiser. Therefore, if the revelations are for girls of your age, then it comes to me as trying to ridicule Maje and pretending you have overcome. Girl, if anyone has moved on, it is the guy.

Although the world now consumes your story, one cannot say it is the best thing for you. Like they say, ‘sometimes, the activities of a madman in the market place thrill; no one would wish to have him as a relation.’ You will get thumbs up that may give you a false sense of fulfilment. This could come majorly from even older women; some with delayed marriages or in a bad relationship, even single mothers. It is entirely up to you to choose a new society of women, but the consequences of an uncommon association is felt alone, and at one’s private moment.

When you go pass your prime and the effect of your bleached skin sets in proper, you will remember Maje again. But the lesson is not for you, but for your unborn children. Let them know that you were as guilty as Maje in this faulty relationship.

  • Charly Boy to lead protest to NASS, other govt agencies

Charly Boy to lead protest to NASS, other govt agencies

Former president of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Charles Oputa, aka Areafada, has expressed plan to lead a protest to the National Assembly and other arms of government perceived to be failing in their constitutional mandates.

He described the would-be protesters as a coalition of ‘ordinary people with no political affiliations but believers in the paramount interest of our country as well as the capacity of President Muhammadu Buhari to lead us in the right direction.”

The radical entertainer revealed through a bulk online message, Tuesday, that the Occupy protest tagged #OCCUPYNASSUNLTD will hold on November 15, 2016, from Unity Fountain to the National Assembly, Abuja by 10am.

In an eight paragraph piece, Charly Boy, who is the coordinator of the protest said: “In the life of every human being, there comes a moment when we must make a stand for that which matters. Nigeria is a country that is richly blessed with Natural Resources and at the same time, a country that is cursed with Bad leadership and sustained political criminality. When 180 million people are at the mercy of 180,000 politicians; who have mastered the act of creating division among her own people through Religion, ethnicity, corruption, trivialities and frivolous issues; we know that our country, future and progress need a new breed of Hungry, Angry and Vexed Coalition of the Willing to ensure that the Change we seek is not a mirage but a reality necessary for real Nation Building.”

He described the planned series of mass protest as a journey to self-realization through #OCCUPYNASSUNLTD; #OCCUPYRMAFC; #OCCUPYEFCC and #OCCUPYUNLTD for all agencies of Government that are failing the people in the Executive, Judiciary and Legislative.

“We have dedicated ourselves to the Struggle of realigning the mind-set of our People and the Looting Politicians in Nigeria; We have begun to initiate the process of holding Politicians accountable to not only their promises but, the service to the Nigerian Humanity. The battles for the heart and soul of the Nigerian State is not going to be easy; it is bigger than the Individual in us and will be fought better by the Collective Engagement and the undying capacity of the Average Nigeria to key into a force of good that has so far eluded us,” he said.

According to Charly Boy, “Every Local Government and State of the Nigerian Federation is feeling the impact of decades of a wasteful culture and recent years of Mindless looting in Government. Something must have to change, or the future we seek will be lost to the today we ignore. How do we become a coalition of Brave comrades? How do we become a people with the Zeal and Desire to see a Better Nation? How do we connect with the poor, hungry and angry Nigerian on the Streets to demand real Positive change from Politicians?

“How do we move our country forward by being forward thinkers without recourse to what this country must do for us all? What happened to the Nigeria of our fathers and fore fathers? Why have we lost the desire for good and have all embraced the insanity of individualism that has corrupted our Humanity?”

He said although every Nigerian cannot be on the street of the FCT, people could show support in other forms.

“We Need food for protesters; We Need Water; We Need Breakfast; We Need Mats; We Need Mobile Toilets; We Need Canopies and Tents; We Need Medical Supplies; We Need Protesters to be Transported from all across the country; we Need anything that will support this eternal struggle for the good of Nigeria,” he said.

Continuing, the entertainer said: “Change is Hard; Change is difficult; But it is the only constant in our Humanity. It is time to become fearless; It is time to become comrades in struggle for good governance; It is time to make a stand and fight for your country to be better. The pains, hunger and suffering in the Nigerian States is becoming a ticking time bomb. The future we are afraid off is gradually become our new reality daily. To stop the future where the poor will have no food to eat but the rich is what we are fighting against. Our nationalistic engagement to help PMB root out corruption, impunity and mindless political criminality out of the Nigerian Polity is in need of a helping hand; This movement is appealing to the better nature of the Nigerian; it is in need of silent heroes and good people; this movement need men and woman who are capable of giving something for the good of their country. This why we need you; we are asking that you give for the interest of your country, not only that, we are asking that you give to make an impact in this move to drive the Nigeria narrative strongly and positively. We are your everyday buddy; we are your partners in good governance and selfless commitment to the Nigerian Cause.

“Let it be known that when comrades stood for what is right and stood for the interest of this country, that you stood with whatever contribution you have to make this nation great again. This is the heart of the movement; we are citizens who are determined to change the country for the good of all. This Movement needs you and your country will appreciate your effort towards making this project a success.

“I am awaiting your commitment towards moving your Nation forward. It is our struggle; it is our war and it is our hopefulness.”
