Season over as Boniface undergoes surgery

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface must be cursing his rotten luck as he is now set to undergo a knee surgery that will end his season.

However, he will remain on loan at Bundesliga club Werder Bremen.

This past week, Victor Boniface visited a specialist in Austria over his persistent knee problem.

Bild has now reported that the loan transfer for Victor Boniface between Werder Bremen and Leverkusen will be maintained until the end of the season.

Victor Boniface will not play for Werder again due to a confirmed cartilage damage that now has to result in surgery.

Werder Bremen will not face financial consequences, as Leverkusen will cover the salary of the player.

The bubbly striker was philosophical after news broke he will need to go under the knife again.

“Been putting fake smile for almost a year. But God knows why all this is happening. Grateful to God,” he posted on X

Earlier he had described 2025 as “tough year”.

Victor Boniface too fat, says Werder Bremen coach

Victor Boniface is having a difficult start at his new club, Werder Bremen, due to excess weight.

The striker, who led Bayer Leverkusen to the league title in 2024, is currently struggling with excess weight.

The club’s sporting director Clemens Fritz confirmed this to BILD.

Boniface was crowned champion last year under successful manager Xabi Alonso, with 21 goals and 10 assists in 34 official matches.

The following season, his numbers dipped somewhat, although he was still important for Leverkusen with 11 goals in 27 matches. A departure in the summer was inevitable, but his transfer was anything but smooth.

The former Union SG striker initially seemed destined for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr, but failed his medical.

A few weeks later, a move to AC Milan also fell through. Ultimately, Boniface opted for a loan deal with low-flying Werder Bremen, where he has made only four appearances so far.

According to Fritz, this is due to his physical condition.

“We’ve clearly identified the issues together with Victor and are supporting him in every way possible,” said the sporting director.

“He accepts our support and wants to work on himself, with extra training, physiotherapy, and a modified nutrition plan. We’re working closely with him.”

Boniface earns Steffen praises amidst social media saga

Super Eagles and Werder Bremen striker Victor Boniface has been in the headlines of late, and not for football reasons, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old is yet to find the back of the net for his new side after joining on loan from Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the transfer deadline day.

However, his social media posts have raised concerns recently, especially after he shared a cryptic and, in some eyes, disrespectful post on his Instagram story.

“If you waste your money on too many women, you will not achieve anything in life. Find yourself one or two women and settle down. At most three women, or if you are going through a lot, four is also okay,” Boniface wrote.

Boniface also wrote – “Life is like a shoe, you can’t drink a cow because the earth is a carrot” – which stirred frowns.

Werder Bremen head coach, Horst Steffen, has revealed that the social media perception of Boniface is not who he is in reality.

“I’ve gotten to know him as a very lovely person; he’s very likeable, approachable, and dedicated to the team,” the 56-year-old told the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

“We laugh a lot together; I think it’s great when a player has such a sense of humour and shows such joy.

“He’s fit right in with our group. I don’t know what others say or how it was elsewhere,” the 56-year-old concluded.

West Ham offered chance to sign Boniface

Nigeria international Victor Boniface has seen moves to Al Nassr and AC Milan fail in recent months as his spell in Bayer Leverkusen increasingly looks close to the end.

West Ham United have been offered the chance to sign Nigerian striker Victor Boniface after his proposed move to AC Milan collapsed, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward, who struck 11 goals in all competitions last season, was close to sealing a switch to Italy on loan with an option to buy for around £21m.

However, the transfer broke down after the 24-year-old reportedly failed a medical, leaving his future uncertain just days before the window closed.

A report by Give Me Sport indicates intermediaries have now presented Boniface to West Ham, with Leverkusen open to letting him leave despite the forward having four years left on a contract worth close to £95,000 per week. The Bundesliga club were initially willing to sanction his move to Milan, but have since been circulating his name across Europe as he looks for a new challenge.

The Hammers, who have endured a poor start to the Premier League campaign with three straight defeats, are already strengthening their squad with deals for Portugal Under-21 midfielder Mateus Fernandes and Monaco defender Soungoutou Magassa. Yet manager Graham Potter is also weighing up whether to add a striker before Monday’s 7 pm deadline.

The former Union SG forward currently has an estimated market value of €40 million as per Transfermarkt.

    Expert faults Rossoneri ‘poor handling’

A shattered Victor Boniface did not waste time to take to social media to vent his frustration after a proposed transfer to AC Milan was called off due to a failed medical.

A popular social media user, Boniface tackled his critics head-on online soon after news broke out that Milan will not sign him due to concerns over his physical condition.

“Try to make it to my level before you insult me,” the Bayer Leverkusen striker lashed out at a follower during his live stream on TikTok after his transfer to AC Milan was halted due to a failed medical test.

In another outburst online, the 24-year-old striker fired: “Clowns everywhere” in reference to comments about the failed transfer.

Boniface also engaged Top Transfer Expert Fabrizio Romano on the issue, demanding that he should take down a post about him.

There was a verbal agreement between Leverkusen and Milan for the loan transfer of Victor Boniface with even an option to buy at the end of the season.

In a related development, an Italian transfer expert, Alfredo Pedullà,  has berated Milan for their poor handling of the potential  switch of  Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen , adding the  Italian giants  should have  done their homework  first before  the circus  in the media.

Regarded as  Football Italia’s leading  voice in the ‘wheeling and dealing’  business , Pedullà  said  ‘the Rossoneri got it all wrong in this situation’

“If we might be so bold, we’d say Milan dealt terribly with the whole thing,” he noted matter-of-factly. “Once upon a time, when dealing with players who had the long injury history of Boniface, directors would’ve ensured medical tests were performed in secret before making a definitive decision.

“Instead, as far as we are concerned, Milan unfairly and pointlessly subjected the Nigerian to cameras and selfies, knowing full well the whole time that the transfer was at risk.”

He added: “It would’ve been far better to proceed with caution and away from the media glare, so that it could be evaluated behind closed doors and not under the spotlights.

“The ideal strategy for both Milan and the player would be silence, but they should’ve thought of that before and not afterwards. It’s a pity.”

The Rossoneri have been actively searching for a new centre-forward over the last few weeks given that Santiago Gimenez is currently the only senior striker in Massimiliano Allegri’s squad.

A slight injury to Rafael Leao, who had started as a centre-forward in Milan’s first competitive match of the 2025-26 season, has also increased the urgency for a new striker in San Siro.

Milan had also been linked with moves for Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund and Juventus’s Dusan Vlahovic, but have been unable to come to a full agreement with any of the aforementioned parties despite weeks of negotiations.

Once Boniface’s move is completed, he will become Milan’s eighth new signing of the summer transfer window, following the previous arrivals of Luka Modric, Ardon Jashari, Samuele Ricci, Koni De Winter, Pervis Estupinan, Zachary Athekame and Pietro Terracciano.
