    VI, Ikoyi clean Up – Lagos begins clearing of illegal structures

    The much anticipated Clean Up of Ikoyi and Victoria Island areas commenced simultaneously on Saturday with officials of the State Task Force and other agencies clearing illegal structures and shanties and same being carted away by trucks of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority.

    The operation which was led by the Chairman of the State Task Force, Supol Yinka Egbeyemi, featured the usage of bulldozers and pay loaders which demolished all illegal structures on median of Water Corporation Drive.

    The team also cleared the Waterfront at Ozumba Mbadiwe of automobile technicians and food courts that have taken over the space.

    Officials of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens were also on ground to secure the spaces that have been cleared.

    Areas already cleared in Ikoyi include Awolowo Road, Falomo and Bourdillon where disused tyres and horticulturists were removed and taken away.

    At Water Corporation Drive, which is also a major infraction point, the road setback which had been converted into brothels and bars and car wash were removed.

    The team also cleared Ahmadu Bello Way and the liaison offices that had been converted to makeshift homes and canteens.

    Chairman of the Clean Up Committee and Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, who also visited Ahmadu Bello Way, Ligali Ayorinde and Ozumba Mbadiwe Waterfront to see the extent of the clean Up, seized the opportunity to advise residents and property owners with illegal structures to dismantle them before the team comes calling.

    The exercise which is a continuous one also featured the presence of representative of Victoria Island and Ikoyi Residents Association (VIIRA) who supported the initiative of the State government on the clean up exercise.

  • ‘Why we’re organising health insurance convention for entertainers’

    COME July 22, all roads will literally lead to the Grand Ball Room of Eko Hotel and Suite, Victoria Island, Lagos for the first-ever health insurance convention in Nigeria. The event, which is being packaged by the Nigerian Entertainment Industry Lecture Series in partnership with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Lagos State Ministry of Health and Nigeria Medical Association, was necessitated as a result of the rising spate of deaths of celebrities in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

    According to the organisers, a lot of entertainers and other members of the society are not knowledgeable about health insurance.

    The Nigerian Entertainment Industry Health Insurance Convention is designed as a customized learning and education platform for the practitioners of the entertainment industry and members of the public to understand the importance of health insurance.

    “The convention seeks to illuminate complex issues of health care practice and policy by bringing together leading-edge doers and thinkers. The convention delineates perspectives of stakeholders throughout the healthcare community in addressing broad issues and the type of health insurance to go for,” said the organisers.

    Some of the topics to be discussed at the convention are: “The health implications of celebrity lifestyles; Benefits of Health Insurance Policies; Health Insurance Policy: At what cost?; The Health Insurance Policy: How dependable? and The Role of Government in Health Insurance Policies.”

  • Missing vehicle

    A black Mercedes Benz G-Wagon Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked GG 868 AL (with Chassis number: WD CYC7BF4BX193049) has been reported missing.

    A source at the police at Bar Beach Police Station, Victoria Island, Lagos, where the incident was reported, said the vehicle which belongs to Mr Festus Igbomor of Worldspan Holdings Ltd. It was reportedly stolen by unknown persons where it was parked on March 25.

    All efforts by the police to recover the vehicle, according to the source, have failed. Any information about the vehicle, the source said, should be reported to the police station, any other police station or Mr Igbomor at 18A, Okoawo Close, Victoria Island.

    WEDNESDAY, October 15, residents of 1004 Estate, situated on Victoria Island, got a thrill as Inspiro Productions brought its Play @ 1004 featuring stellar performances from artistes from highlife, jazz, poetry and every genre of arts and entertainment.

    Held at the tennis court of the 1004 Estate’s Club B, where a mini stage had been set up to create the right ambiance for the evening, artistes on the bill were ecstatic.

    An hour behind schedule, the show kicked off with Adeh, an afro jazz guitarist. Adeh set the trend for other performers to follow, teasing the audience with his rhythmic tunes. One of the songs that got the audience hooked to his groove was his interpretation of Eddie Kwansa, a popular theme song of the 90s TV sitcom The New Masquerade. Other artistes who performed at the event were Lekkihood Finest, Obadice, amongst others.

    The female artistes used their vocal abilities to thrill the audience. Starting with the new sensational personality on spoken word, Titilope Sonuga, the audience were awed by the young engineer. She stirred provoking thoughts as she flawlessly delivered one of her piece I come from a Place-Lagos, a narrative that clearly depicts the lifestyle of its residents, painting a clear picture of hustling and bustling in the city.

    Other artistes who performed included Dapo Dina, the afro jazz pianist, and Agboola Shadare, another iconic jazz guitarist who drew the curtains for the night with Joe’s I Wanna Know.

    AFRIFF 2013 GOES TO TINAPA

    Organisers of Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) have announced that the third edition of the event will hold from November 10th to 17th, 2013 at the popular TINAPA resort in Calabar, the Cross River state capital.

    Founder and Project Director, Chioma Ude noted that the synergy created by experiencing the festival in Calabar will be something to cherish for a lifetime. She said it will be the ultimate experience for all participants from home and abroad.

    The unveiling of this year’s edition which held at the Rhapsody Lounge, Victoria Island, Lagos, was attended by His Excellency, Senator Liyel Imoke, Governor of Cross River State and his wife, Mrs Obioma Imoke. Also at the event was the Special Adviser to the President on Strategy and Documentation, Mr Oronto Douglas and the cream of the Nigerian Film Industry including several Nollywood guild heads and notable stars.

    Governor Imoke expressed pleasure at the union between his State and AFRIFF saying, “The Africa International Film Festival is a natural inclusion in the colorful yearlong calendar of world class activities held in Cross River State.” Attesting to this development, Mr Oronto Douglas said that the Federal Government would support the State Government efforts at promoting this film festival and other film festivals, and taking them to greater heights.

    Chioma Ude expressed gratitude to the government and people of Cross River State for believing in her vision and partnering with the festival to deliver an exceptional experience in their state. She explained that AFRIFF was a platform that seeks to give expression to players in the African film industry by recognizing and rewarding excellence in the sector.

    Conceived by Ude three years ago, AFRIFF presents a complete immersion into the world of film making with participation from local and international, actors, directors, scriptwriters, cinematographers, sound engineers, musicians, editors, light engineers, students, equipment manufacturers and businessmen. The objectives are to develop the film industry to a level where the products compete favorably with their contemporaries all over world; provide a growth opportunity for these film industry professionals to eventually export their products to the world; facilitate access to investors, equipment, technical and skill acquisition through Festival organized fora and several capacity development workshops; complement government’s efforts at revamping small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs).
