She said: “I will be very honest: I and Shaun did have a bit of back and forth during the lockdown; we were fighting over silly things. Going into the house, he found his confidant, and I had to deal with a lot of emotions on my own.

  • Australian authorities urge people to remain alert as bushfires spread

Australian authorities urged people to remain alert on Monday as bushfires that have destroyed dozens of homes, killed cattle and forced hundreds of residents to flee continued to burn out of control in the southeast of the country.

No deaths or serious injuries were reported on Monday but the bushfires have caused extensive damage in rural areas of Victoria and New South Wales (NSW), Australia’s two most populous states.

No fewer than 100 houses were damaged or destroyed, authorities said.

“At this stage (there have been) no lives lost,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said at a news conference in the small NSW coastal town of Tathra.

“It is just a great credit to the firefighters, to the volunteers, the emergency workers – all of the community has pulled together and provided such great support,” he said.

The fires, believed to have been sparked by lightning on Saturday, were fanned by dry, hot winds as temperatures reached 41 degrees Celsius (106 Fahrenheit) on Sunday.

Emergency officials said conditions should ease later on Monday but “watch and act” warnings remained in place for five locations.

The fire also set off an argument among Australia’s politicians on whether climate change was a contributing factor to the blazes.

“You can’t attribute any particular event, whether it’s a flood or fire or a drought …to climate change. We are the land of droughts and flooding rains, we’re the land of bushfires,” Turnbull said.

Authorities said some 69 houses were destroyed and a further 39 were damaged and 30 caravans or cabins were also wiped out in Tathra, where residents fled to the beach on Sunday to avoid the flames as flying embers quickly carried the firefront forward.

About 700 residents were evacuated to centers set up at the nearby town of Bega and several schools in affected areas were closed on Monday.

NSW Rural Fire Service Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers earlier told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that five of 22 fires had not yet been contained.

“There’s still a lot of fire around the landscape,” he said, warning that it would still be several days before they were extinguished.

About 280 firefighters were battling the blazes, while 22,000 homes were without power in the region after high winds brought down trees, Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said late on Sunday.

Bushfires are a common and deadly threat in Australia’s hot, dry summers, fueled by highly flammable eucalyptus trees.

In January, hundreds of holidaymakers had to be evacuated by boat from the beaches of the Royal National Park south of Sydney when they became trapped by bushfires.

The 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria killed 173 people and injured more than 400.

  • Police arrest couple for selling daughter for N400, 000

The Cross River Police Command on Wednesday said it had arrested a couple, [names withheld], for allegedly selling their six-year-old daughter for N400, 000.

Presenting the couple before newsmen, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, the state Commissioner of Police, said the suspects were arrested at Ikom Local Government area on April 26 following a tip-off.

According to Inuwa, the couple sold the child to enable them offset their house rent and open up a small provision shop.

“On April 26, 2017, following a tip-off, our men arrested a couple, George-Sunday Udoh and his wife Victoria, for allegedly selling their daughter at the cost of N400,000.

“The suspects were arrested by our operatives attached to the Ikom division.

“The case has been transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department here in Calabar and investigation is ongoing,’’ he said.

The father of the child, however, denied selling the child in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“It is true that we don’t have money and things are very hard with me and my wife, but we did not sell our baby for N400, 000,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the commissioner also paraded 28 armed robbery suspects, cultists and others for various offences.

The commissioner said on May 2, officers attached to the Akamkpa local police division arrested five robbery suspects who allegedly broke into a corps members’ lodge at Government Secondary School, Akamkpa.

He said that the suspects carted away a laptop, handset and N3, 800, adding that investigation into the case was ongoing.

“On May 3, we also arrested a security guard at Ekorinim area of Calabar Municipality for defiling the 11-year-old daughter of his boss.

“The case was reported by the mother of the girl,’’ he said.

The suspect told NAN that he had a mutual agreement with the girl before he had sex with her.

“I did not defile nor rape her, we both agreed to have sex and I was arrested four days after the incident happened.

“I am sorry that I slept with my madam’s daughter, but I did not defile or raped her because we both agreed to have sex,’’ he said.

The Commissioner also paraded three armed robbery suspects suspected of snatching a Toyota Avalon car with registration number ANA 369 CK belonging to one Obi Joseph-Funmi on January 25, 2017.

He added that in all the cases, the police had recovered five locally made pistols, two vehicles, an ax, machetes, live cartridges, and other weapons.

  • Lagos begins Ikoyi, Lekki, Victoria Island clean-up next week

A SPECIAL Committee raised by the Lagos State government to clean-up highbrow Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island will swoop into action immediately after the Sallah Holiday, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello, said yesterday.

The committee, set up last week by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to enforce the Environmental Sanitation and Town Planning Laws in the affected areas, had issued a 14-day ultimatum to violators.

A statement by his Press Affairs Officer, Mr Kunle Adesina, the SSG said abatement notices were served on owners of illegal structures, abandoned buildings now harbouring prostitutes, shanties, street hawkers and those who have converted walkways into ware points and food courts.

The ultimatum, which expires on Sunday, was given to concerned residents to dismantle the illegal structures voluntarily to avoid prosecution.

According to Bello, the committee decided to first embark on sensitisation campaign on the need to comply with the original master plan for Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island.

Stated that the committee has concluded plans to enforce its mandate, Bello listed the governor’s directive to include: immediately commence the implementation of the approved action plan and execution of the clean-up exercise, develop strategies for preventing re-occurrences as well as other recommendations as necessary to sustain environmental renewal of these areas and embark on a public sensitisation exercise for the sustenance of a cleaner community in the axis.

He renewed the commitment of the Ambode led-administration to restore environmental sanity to every part of the state.

Recalling the governor’s views while inaugurating the committee, Bello quoted him as saying: “Cases of abandoned properties have become very rampant with miscreants and criminal elements taking over these properties as their base to cause havoc.

“The neat road sides of the past now parade pockets of kiosks, illegal parking lots, unapproved mechanic workshops, roadside beer parlours and commercial centres.

“In addition, originally residential areas now have industrial and commercial concerns located there, distorting the balance of the environment.

  • Kelvin has 300 boys in Niger Delta, says suspect

Kelvin has 300 boys in Niger Delta, says suspect

One of the suspected kidnappers, who abducted Victoria, wife of Dr. Ona Ekhomu, has said that notorious kidnap kingpin, Kelvin, recruited and trained over 300 kidnappers scattered across the Niger Delta.

The suspect, who gave his name as Akpevwe Richard, said he only met Kelvin once when the latter was distributing money to people in Kokori, Delta State.

He was paraded at the headquarters of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army.

Richard, whose nickname is 2-Mark, said the kidnap syndicate used nicknames during operations to avoid mistaken identity and concealed means of tracking them easily by security operatives.

He said his job was to drive his colleagues and drop them at locations after every operation.

Richard said Kelvin, now in detention, was called ‘General’ because of the money he distributed, adding that he operated with boys picked up from Edo, Bayelsa, Delta and River states.

He said: “I am 22 years old. I met Kelvin when I came from Bayelsa. I only met him once when he was sharing money. In the first kidnapping, I was given N90,000 and the next one I got N60,000. I was recruited by Rufus for Kelvin. A charm was given to me by Rufus, but I am surprised that the bullet hit me when a member of a vigilance group shot me. I’ve not followed them to an operation before.

“I was their driver. I didn’t know when they kidnapped the judge. I was doing menial jobs before joining the kidnap gang. They always keep victims at Kokori, sometimes in the bush and sometimes at home. “The villagers don’t know we are kidnappers. I was arrested at Overi-Okpe. Onus called me to come and carry them. They entered the car and dropped the arms and ammunition in the car. We were stopped by security personnel and when they asked us, Onus said he was going to see somebody, but when they searched the car, they found bullets and shot Onus. Other gang members retaliated and all of us ran into the bush. I heard gunshots inside the bush until a member of a vigilance group saw me and shot me. I want them to forgive me.

“Kelvin has many boys at Kokori. I have not been to Edo State before. Some people in Kokori know that we are kidnappers.”

Spokesperson for the 4 Brigade Nigeria Army, Cpt. Roselyn Managbe, listed the items recovered from Richard as one AK47 rifle, 266 rounds of 5.65 ammunition, 9fn magazines, one police fragmented jacket, 16 mobile phones, charms, a Prado sport utility vehicle belonging to Justice Daniel Okungbowa, one BMW car marked Lagos GC 484 EKY, among others.

Cpt. Managbe said 6,965 live cartridges, one barrel gun and a pistol were recovered from three persons, who deals in illegal arms trade while disguising as traders selling building materials.

She gave the names of the suspects as Ernest Egbaneyalobor, Osagie Igiemwen and Matthew Iyekekpolor.

Osagie said he only sell arms and ammunition to licensed hunters and that when he requested for operational licence, he was told that it was not available.

He said he surrendered to the security agents because he wanted to stop selling arms after being on the run.

Two persons, Barry Adiotonne and Saturday Ukpebor, who were arrested with a tanker loaded with 15,000 litres of illegally refined diesel, also attempted to bribe soldiers with N200,000.

Cpt. Managbe said the suspects would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
