  • Safer Internet Month: Censors Board warns against hate speech, videos

As February is marked globally as Safer Internet Month, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) joins different nations and institutions to sensitize citizens on safer use of the internet.

At a two-day workshop on “Together for a Better Internet for Peace and Economic Development”, organised by the NFVCB for youths in Benue State on February 11-12 at the Benue State University, Makurdi, Executive Director of agency, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, advised Nigerian youths against sharing hate speeches, photos and inciting videos on social media platforms.

The campaign becomes more pertinent as Nigeria moves closer to the general elections, slated for February 16, 2019

Thomas, who was speaking on ‘Safer Internet Month’, noted that, in the interest of national peace and unity, there was urgent need to caution young Nigerians against the dangers of generating and sharing fake news and provocative motion pictures, adding that crisis in some parts of the country were escalated by reactions to fake news, hate speeches and videos spread on the social media.

Continuing, the NFVCB boss said: “It is no longer news that digital technology has taken over the world, therefore, we must urge our young people to shun the spreading of contents that are threats to national peace and co-existence.

“This conference is borne out of the need for NFVCB, both as an industry and a decision maker to build the capacity of the youth who are mostly the users of the internet.

“We want them to promote positive contents and avoid sharing hate speeches on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, especially during and after the 2019 general elections.

“We all have a responsibility to ensure that the internet is not used to promote what divide us, because our nation cannot develop in the absence of tolerance and unity,” he said.

The event was attended by students, youths, civil society groups and university dons who were among the resource persons on the panel discussion: “Social Harm Caused by Film Content and Solution.”

Prof. Saint Gbilekaa, a Don in the Department of Theatre Arts of the University of Abuja, called for the promotion of good values on the internet.

Gbilekaa, who spoke on “Film and Internet Usage: The Need for Conflict Resolution and Economic Development”, urged Nigerian filmmakers to produce films that address societal ills and shape positive ideas.

Also, Prof. John Illah of the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Jos, warned against spreading fake news and photo -shopped images.

Illah, in his presentation, “Role of Film and Conflict Resolution and Anger Management”, noted that fake news and images were politically motivated to smear “political opponents, especially as the general elections approaches.”

“Our youths should beware of spreading images and news they found on the internet, because many of them are political propaganda,” he said.

  • Mum videos three-year-old twin boys while making love

A woman, Patience Isua, has lost custody of her three-year-old twin boys for allegedly videoing them while making love. She was said to have sent the video recording to the twins father, Emmanuel Ikanta, who took the clip to the police.

The children were taken from their mother’s  2, Olugbemiga Ladipo, Ado in Ajah, Lagos home, on Tuesday night by Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal and some officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs.

According to Isua, she recorded and sent the clip to her estranged husband so that he would take her seriously.

She said she usually told him the kids behaved strangely whenever they returned from his place. Their father, she claimed,   would hang up on her after saying “and so?”

Isua said Ikanta left her last year, adding that he is co-habiting with a  woman, who she alleged is corrupting her kids.

Asked by Edgal who made the video, she said: “Yes, I took the video myself. He was not around when I sent it to him. My children stay with me and they stay with him as well. He comes to pick the children to wherever he is staying.

“We have been living apart since last year that he took me to a human rights organisation. It was agreed that he should have 12 hours with the kids at weekends but he did not stick to the agreement. Sometimes, he took them with him for many days and when they came back, they usually exhibited strange behaviours.

“I am aware that he lives with an older woman. So, he takes them there and whenever they are there, I get worried because I do not know what my children are going through in the hands of the woman.

“Somebody trained my boys to practice such devilish act. This is an abuse. I do not know who trained them to be like this. Before I saw them and videoed it, I had told their father that whenever they came back from his house they usually complained of pain.

“There were signs before it got to this stage. I don’t know where he takes them to and what they are fed. Most times they come back stooling blood or complaining of pains in their anus. I called his attention to it but he didn’t listen. This is what has been killing me silently.

“There was a day they went to school from his house and their auntie (teacher) called me to complain that my children were stooling blood. I told her to report to their father because they came to school from his house. Then I called him the following day to ask if their auntie complained to him and he said ‘yes’. When I asked what they ate, he hung up.

“Another time, one of my sons while pooing, said his anus was paining him. I took him out of the toilet and I  saw fresh wounds. Again I called to find out where he usually took the kids, because I did not understand what was happening.

“I told him his children would come back from where he takes them to and they would sit on the chair and start saying mummy, daddy kiss.

“So, when I saw them that day, I had to video and send to him so that he would see the damage he was causing to our kids. He now turned the whole thing around and wants to blame me, whereas, I told him to stop taking my kids where he usually took them.

“I know they picked up the habit where he usually took them to, because in my house, they do not have access to television and they do not go out. I only take them to school and church. I live with my sister, who goes to work and comes back late. So, it is certainly not in my house that they saw such devilish act.”

Asked the action she took after she saw her kids practicing homosexuality, Isua said she took them for deliverance and also told her pastor, who prayed for them.

She said she never went to hospital when they were stooling blood nor did  report the matter to the police.

Isua said: “I also trained them. I told my kids to shout and tell their daddy should anyone try to touch their private parts. I told them to scream ‘Satan!’”

Ikanta denied the allegations, saying she neither told him nor showed him anything until the day she sent the video.

“I was really surprised when she sent me that video. I never imagined such a thing would happen. So, you took your time to video this without you shouting at them to stop and you said you wanted to send it to me?” he queried.

Addressing the couple, Edgal said: “This is a very serious act and as a mother you see your children and your response was to video it? Now apart from you videoing this what other actions did you take? Who did you report to?

“It is not only the police that are concerned. You can see we have a Child Protection Unit from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development.

“People are concerned. You would agree with me that these children are supposed to be under strict parental care and guidance. From this video, you will agree that it doesn’t show good example of parental care.

“Having discussed it with experts and also officials from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, we are of the opinion that there is need to find out more as to what is going on regarding the welfare of the children. As such, we are also of the opinion that we cannot entrust these children to your care for now, until we understand exactly what is going on.

“We would entrust the children to the ministry. That is why they are here. They have shelters that are approved by the government and these shelters are purposely built for purposes such as this to ensure that children are protected by the state when the need arises.

“There is going to be a joint investigation between the police gender unit and the ministry. We want to be sure that nobody is abusing these children. We want to know where they picked up this kind of elaborate homosexual act.

“Anyone who sees this would be worried especially because of the tenderness of the children. They are too young.

“We cannot entrust them to any of you. We intend to take this matter to a law court to determine the suitability of both of you for parenthood.”

  • Women and Nigerian music videos

    Women and Nigerian music videos

SIR: To say Nigerian Hip Pop or Afro Pop or whatever, has grabbed the attention of millions across the globe is to put it mildly. This is no doubt our time to shine. Our musical artists both male and female have raised the stakes notches higher and achieved recognition and acclaim within Africa and beyond.

However, our musical artists need to be strategic on how they translate this global attention to positive use. They have an opportunity to literally change Nigeria and the world at large for good. Music is a powerful tool for change; see the impact of American music on music lovers across the globe.

Growing up in the 80s, teens and youths in Nigeria were more American than even the Americans in our love for their music. From Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, New Edition, Boys to Men, The Jacksons, Michael Jackson, Barry White Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Paula Abdul, Natalie Cole, Shalamar, Whispers etc. We knew and loved them all. Nigerian music came second place in our hearts except for maybe Fela.

With our appreciation for Nigerian music currently at an all time high, this in my view is a great opportunity for positive change. This positive change might not be a reality going by the growing trend in the contents of the lyrics been produced by our artists, especially in 2012. The sex, degradation, objectification, commoditization of the Nigerian female in some of these lyrics and their videos is alarming and worrisome.

What I find most worrisome is that in these scandalously vulgar videos some beautiful intelligent looking girls are rigorously dancing their hearts out virtually nude. While the male leader singer (s) is/are fully clad in his/their designer clothing and accessories. Wait a minute must dancers strip to their bare necessities to aid our appreciation of the lyrics of a song. Besides, if these videos are blue films, shouldn’t the male singers also bare it all? No they are the super stars, they are well dressed but the female dancers are literally nude. For how much if I may ask. Even if it’s a million naira or dollars is it really worth trampling on the dignity of those dancers?

A lot of our male artists are sadly guilty of promoting this vulgar trend in their lyrics and music videos, which will only lead to further violence against girls and women. But I would use the singer Timaya to buttress my point. I am a fan of Timaya’s earlier songs but the songs and videos he recently released are horrifying for the peaceful existence of girls and women in Nigeria and the world at large. His song “sexy ladies” would only inspire boys and men to assault and even rape girls and women. It promotes sex without consent of the female. Please listen to the lyrics and you will see what I mean.

For the female dancers, please think through these questions before you bear it all in your next music video. Is money everything? What good would this music video inspire in its viewers? Will it advance respect for girls and women in our communities and country at large or will it further the view of girls and women as objects of pleasure and abuse? Will you be proud to show this video to your parents and in future your children and grand children? Is this really a comprehensive expression of your talents and contribution to the development of the Nigerian music industry and the world at large?

For Nigerian musicians keep up the good work but please keep it positive and inspiring. Please sing songs that would inspire our kids and youths for positive change, Songs on love faith and hope. Songs promoting protection of the environment, respect for human rights, prolife, anti corruption, politics, creativity, economic empowerment etc. Songs that can change the world for good!
