  • Barber, 23, docked over alleged phone theft

    A 23-year-old barber, Philip John, was on Friday arraigned at a Karu Magistrate Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing an Infinix brand of phone.

    John, a resident of Jikwoyi, was docked on charges of criminal breach of trust, theft and criminal misappropriation.‎

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Vincent Osuji, had told the court that one Danjuma Alalakpe of Karu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on June 27.

    Osuji said that the defendant committed the offences on June 26 and at about 9.00 p.m.

    “The complainant alleged that his daughter by name Faith Danjuma went to the defendant’s barbing salon to have her hair cut and in the process plugged her Infinix phone and left.

    “Upon her return, she discovered that the defendant has dishonestly stolen the phone and all efforts to recover the phone proved abortive.

    “During police investigation, the defendant confessed to have stolen the phone and sold it to one Abubakar at the rate of N1,500,” Osuji said.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 312, 287 and 309 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Abubakar Umar, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Umar adjourned the case until Aug. 14 for hearing.

  • Man in court for allegedly slapping policeman

    The Police on Monday arraigned a 27-year-old woman, Faith Michael,  in a Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly slapping and  intimidating a police officer.

    Michael was arraigned on a five-count charge, bordering on joint act, obstructing public servant from discharging lawful duties, assault, defamation of character and intimidation, offences she denied committing.

    The prosecutor, Vincent Osuji, told the court that one Sgt. David Akoru, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station, Abuja, on April 15.

    He said that the complainant alleged that on April 14, the defendant with an unidentified man assaulted and intimidated him.

    “While the complainant was at his duty post at CBN junction, Karu, Abuja, he intercepted a commercial motorcycle rider.

    “The defendant who was a passenger, stopped him from discharging his duties and alleged that the complainant forcefully demanded for N50 from the motorcyclist.

    “Before the complainant knew what was going on, the defendant brought an unidentified man, currently at large, who slapped him and intimidated him, boasting that they will remove his uniform,” Osuji said.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 79, 149, 267, 392 and 397 of the Penal Code.

    The judge, Hassan Ishaq, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20, 000, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until May 18, for hearing.

    Man jailed five months for threatening siblings

    A Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced one Stephen Lengshak, 30, to five months imprisonment for repeatedly threatening and intimidating his older siblings.

    The judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the offence of criminal intimidation levelled against him.
    The offence contravened the provisions of Section 397 (b) of the Penal code.

    Ishaq, however, gave Lengshak an option to pay N20,000 fine and write an undertaking that he would not fight, insult or send any threat text messages to anyone.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Vincent Osuji, informed the court that two older siblings of the convict, Emmanuel Dafang and Lydia Mutman, reported him at Karu Police Station on May 22.

    He explained that the complainants alleged that the convict on the same day, travelled from Jos to Abuja with only a cutlass in his bag.

    Osuji said that the siblings, who acted on a tip-off, alerted the police who arrested the convict with the weapon upon his arrival at the home of the second complainant.

    He alleged that the convict travelled to Abuja with the intention to kill the complainants, after sending a threat text message a day before to the first complainant.

    The text message reads, “You are my first target in life, I want to remind you that I will get you killed. I am coming for you.’’

    Osuji told the court that the convict was in the habit of extorting money from his siblings using intimidation and threats.

    The complainants, who were present in court, also recounted various near death experiences they had with him.

    They said the family had tried to no avail to rehabilitate, accommodate and give him good education as the last born of the family, but it yielded no result.

    The prosecutor had urged the court to convict him without an option of fine.

    However, Lengshak pleaded guilty and begged the court for mercy.

    “ I am sorry, I don’t know what came over me, and I want the court to plead with my older ones to please show me love and give me another chance,’’ he pleaded.

  • Parking lot: Two men get N50,000 bail each

    A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja on Friday granted N50, 000 bail each to Prosper Okafor, 43, and Emiakumor Michael, 34, arraigned for allegedly fighting over parking space.

    Both defendants whom are Civil Servants were arraigned for the offence of joint act and inciting disturbance and disturbance of public peace contrary to Sections 79, 114 and 113 of the Penal code.

    The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq admitted the defendants to bail with a reliable and reasonable surety each in like sum.
    He said the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and his address must be verified by the officer of the court.
    Ishaq added that the sureties must submit their driver’s licence or international passports with the court.
    He also ordered the defendants to write an undertaking with the court to maintain peace.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Bar. Vincent Osuji informed the court that the first defendant (Okafor) reported the case of criminal intimidation against the second defendant at the Karu Police Station on May 18.

    He said police investigations had revealed that the two defendants who are neighbours had both engaged themselves in a fight.
    Osuji told the court that it was discovered that the defendants were in the habit of fighting and insulting each other over parking space in their compound.

    “During police investigations, the neighbours of the defendants called the attention of the police to the constant insults and assault that they both engage in over where to park their cars in the car parking space in the compound,” Osuji said.

    According to the prosecutor, the constant fighting both defendants engage in has caused fear and apprehension for other neighbours.
    After listening to the charges, the defendants pleaded not guilty and the matter was adjourned till June 15 for hearing.
