VIS impounds over 200 unroadworthy vehicles in Lagos

Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has seized over 200 unroadworthy vehicles.

The operation, led by the VIS Director, Akin-George Fashola, targeted vehicles—most notably commercial minibuses such as danfo and korope, which the agency says have been major contributors to accidents on roads.

Fashola said the exercise was part of the state’s commitment to enhancing road safety and ensuring that only roadworthy vehicles are allowed to operate within the transport network.

“This operation is not limited to private cars, as many often assume,” he said, adding: “We are focused on every vehicle type—especially those being put into commercial use—because they account for a significant portion of road traffic and road mishaps.”

The VIS director urged vehicle owners, particularly those intending to operating commercial vehicles, to inspect their vehicles at designated VIS annex offices before putting them on the road. “Before commercialising your vehicle, make sure it is fit for the road,” he advised.

He assured residents that the enforcement would be sustained as part of a strategy to reduce road crashes and promote a more efficient and safer transport system.

The VIS has in recent months intensified its monitoring operations, citing concerns about vehicular conditions and driver compliance. The agency maintains that continued collaboration with stakeholders and strict enforcement of vehicle standards remain critical to achieving safer roads in the megacity.
