  • Vlisco celebrates George-David’s humanitarian efforts

    Vlisco, a fabric design and manufacturing group with interests across Africa, has lauded the humanitarian contributions of Dr Yolanda George-David in combating child abuse and neglect in communities across Nigeria.

    George-David  fondly addressed as Aunt Landa, trained as a  Neurosurgeon with her primary residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and began charitable works at  age 16. Her passion has since tilted towards getting both children and adults off the streets.

    The human rights activist has continued to affect lives with  Aunt Landa’s Bethel Foundation which focuses on sexually abused teenagers.

    Her   foundation   provides   counselling,   vocational   and   life   skills   training   to   over   25,000 teenagers   in  Nigeria, aside also being the   convener  of   Aunty   Landa   Market   Square,   another initiative to help empower and provide the basic needs of deprived Nigerians.

    Her foundation  picks up prostitutes in dangerous areas for rehabilitation, rescues sexually abused   girls   and   boys,   gives   shelter   to   the   abandoned,   feeds   thousands   and   covers educational  and  surgical  fees.

    According to a statement from Vlisco, “She is a philanthropist who has dedicated  her  time   to  helping people  suffering  from  all  forms of  abuse and her  work  is helping to shape lives and build a better world for many others”.

    These selfless acts of giving life  and  hope  to  the  abused, oppressed and abandoned as well as other life-changing initiatives, according to the group, have helped redefine the purpose of over a million lives.

    Vlisco has been designing and manufacturing unique fabrics loved by African women, who it says  been  the inspiration  behind  creativity  for  over 170  years. It is committed to empowering and inspiring women and girls  to   achieve   their   dreams.

    Every   year,   Vlisco   celebrates   the achievements of women in Africa and the rest of the world.

    Vlisco Nigeria, a fabric company celebrated women in style at their Ikeja City mall shop which is its first store. Staffs of the company as well as customers interacted well. It was like a family affair and one could hardly differentiate them.

    Marketing Manager, Vlisco Nigeria, Mrs Adaeze Alilonu, said the event was to celebrate consumers, particularly women and Tuesday being International Women’s Day, it was a perfect time. The event she said was also to kick start campaign for the women’s month. Adding that patronage has been wonderful since the store opened last October, Alilonu thanked customers and prospective ones as she she:”Patronage has been interesting we have a mix of consumers both young and old and business is growing gradually. We are very grateful to our consumers.”

    She added: “We manufacture African prints whose awareness is fast growing in Nigeria. Women use our fabrics often and for diverse outings, corporately, as casuals, and for occasions pushing the awareness further”

    Alilonu further mentioned that apart from selling the print, her company engages in empowering women; “We train women in tailoring skills, we have master’s program for them. Through our Corporate Social Responsibilities program, we have been able to impact skills. We strongly support the autism initiative of Mrs. Dotun Akande and also this year we are working strongly on a program that will help to train fashion writers.

    We are also partnering Dana air and will be giving out fabrics to female passengers. Apart from that, women that shop in our store will stand a chance of winning Dana air ticket.” She said

    Vlisco has been making fabric for over one hundred and seventy years and has over the year’s redefined fabric making in the fashion industry worldwide.

    39, 40, 41 TREND 2-5-15.The much-talked-about Vlisco Women’s Month Award and fashion show, the annual event organized by the Vlisco Group, was held last week at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, and it was attended by important people, including celebrities and trendsetters.

    On the occasion, outstanding achievers who inspired others to realize their dreams, like Mrs. DotunAkande, Mrs. Itoro Eze-Anaba and Tolulope Sangosanya, were honoured.

    The founder and proprietress of Patrick Speech and Language Centre, PSLC, Mrs. DotunAkande, emerged the winner of the Vlisco Women’s Month Award 2015.

    Two other finalists were Mrs. Itoro Eze-Anaba, the founder of Mirabel Centre, a foundation set up to provide rehabilitation for rape victims, and Tolulope Sangosanya, the founder of Love On The Street, LOT, a charity project set up to reach out to dyslexic children in Nigeria and help them have hope for a better future .

    Earlier, the Marketing  Manager, Vlisco, Adaeze Alilonu, explained that in line with activities marking the March 8 International Women’s Day, the trio were honoured  as part of efforts to celebrate the inspiring achievements of women in West and Central Africa.

    Alilonu said: “March 8 is the International Women’s Day, so this April, Vlisco deemed it fit to honour the outstanding achievements of West and Central African women by identifying and rewarding those who inspired others to realize their dreams.

    “We chose ‘Live the Dream’as theme because we are poised to celebrate women who inspire dreams.”

    VLISCO has dedicated the month of March all over the world to celebrate distinguished women who have made their mark in their chosen field.

    Three women, namely, Dr Olamide Orekurin, Adesuwa Onyenokwe and Esther Agbarakwe, have emerged as the Vlisco Women’s Month Award and they will be decorated in a ceremony on March 30 at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos. Also, popular Nollywood actress, Stephanie Okereke-Linus- a shining example of a woman who dared to dream and who has become an inspiring role model to young women in Nigeria and across Africa has being made the face of the campaign.

    “The distinguished women were chosen after much research into the works of these great women by different groups” said Adaeze Alilonu,Marketing Manager of Vlisco Nigeria. Mrs Adesuwa Onyenokwe, media practitioner and publisher of Todays Woman (TW),Dr Orekunrin, popularly known as the flying doctor and Esther Agbarakwe, an expert in Assisted Reproductive Family Health have emerged as role models and inspiration to younger women.

    “Vlisco believes that those who dare to dream will shape the future and as we honour these women and tell their stories, we hope many will be motivated to impact their communities.

    Esther Agbarakwe, noted for being honoured by Melinda Gates, Bill Gates’ wife, thanked the company and hoped that their stories will inspire women in Nigeria, adding that her mum was fascinated by Vlisco and had patronized the quality ankara fabrics company.

    Adesuwa, who was equally present, noted that what Vlisco was doing was commendable.

    She said: “Vlisco has gone a bit extra to put smiles on the faces of women. When people see that Vlisco cares more than what you wear, they will love it more. We are not having too many good stories of recent from Nigeria. We hope that our stories will open up possibilities and bring smiles to faces of many.”
