  • Vodacom unit to sell operations in Nigeria, others

    South African mobile phone operator, Vodacom Group Ltd, announced on Friday its plan to sell its Business Africa unit’s Angolan operations and assets to Internet Technologies, Angola, for an undisclosed amount.

    Separately, Vodacom, which is majority owned by Vodafone Group Plc., also announced an agreement to sell the unit’s operations in Nigeria, Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire to Synergy Communications.

    Vodacom said it would no longer service enterprise customers directly in any of the four markets but would continue to service clients through local service providers.

  • Vodacom partners Microsoft to boost business agility

    Vodacom Business Nigeria has entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft (through its 4Afrika initiative) and Descasio to build capacity and help improve operational efficiency among its customers using the suite of Microsoft Azure Cloud platform services.

    Microsoft Azure is an open and flexible cloud platform which will enable customers to rapidly build, deploy and manage its applications, data, runtime and more in the cloud.     Collaboration to enable large and small businesses with specific problem solving solutions will create efficiency to ultimately increase profitability, Vodacom Business Nigeria, has said.

  • Vodacom seeks digitilisation for growth

    Going full scale digital is a sustainable way of ensuring economic growth and matching population growth with infrastructural development, Vodacom Business, said yesterday in Lagos.

    Its Executive Head of Operations (Ag), Olumide Idowu, who spoke at the Information Communications Technology Telecoms (ICTEL) Expo, 2018 organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) at Eko Hotel, said Nigeria is one of the fastest developing countries in the world and the most populous nation in sub-Sahara Africa. With an estimated 198 million, he said  existing infrastructure is overstressed.

    He said: “Leaders around the world are committed to smart city building as they attempt to chart the course towards the development of their cities in order to meet social, economic, and environmental challenges.”

    Idowu said the country is at a pivotal moment in its technological revolution and the current lack of infrastructure provides a ready springboard to embrace Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to create a smarter and a more efficient nation. By using IoT technology, which is now commercially available, a host of intelligently connected services such as efficient healthcare in rural communities become possible a reality.

  • Vodacom seeks gender parity in ICT sector

    TO boost gender equality in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector, Vodacom Business Nigeria officials have visited female pupils of Grace High School, Gbagada and Lagoon Secondary School, Lekki, all in Lagos.

    The officials said the visit was part of the  firm’s celebration of the seventh International Girls in ICT Day.

    They organised the Coding and STEM quiz contests, which the pupils won.

    Vodacom Business Nigeria’s Senior Manager for Product Development, Funke Atanda said: “Vodacom is committed to accelerating the change needed to create relevant opportunities for women through the use of ICT.

    “By supporting ICT skills acquisition for young girls, bringing them into our organisations and opening their minds to new technologies that exist and continue to develop, we are able to encourage more girls to choose courses in the ICT sector. This will help increase the number of women in the ICT sector in the near future.”

    She said initiatives like the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Girls in ICT Day would go a long way towards encouraging this change, thus strengthening the sector while continuing to improve social and economic progression in the country.

    ‘’By providing donations, training and support to ICT-driven programmes, Vodacom Business Nigeria is accelerating the removal of barriers for girls and women in the ICT industry.

    The official said the contest formed part of a global campaign that seeks to encourage young girls to consider ICT as a profession and contribute their quota to the growth of the industry in Nigeria and their self-development.

    The International Girls’ in ICT Day is an initiative of the International ITU to create a global environment that will empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the ICT field.

    With some school girls opting to study technology-related disciplines in decline in most countries worldwide, ITU has committed itself towards championing young women  for a career in tech.

  • Vodacom, Intelsat to expand internet connectivity

    Vodacom Business Nigeria and Intelsat have announced an agreement to expand its enterprise broadband connectivity in Nigeria. This is to further provide improved satellite services to its local enterprise customers.

    The strategic agreement was signed at the Satellite 2018, which took place in Washington D.C, United States (U.S). This agreement  makes Vodacom Business Nigeria the first telecommunications provider in Nigeria to lease capacity on the Intelsat 35e Satellite.

    As satellite coverage increases globally, enterprises businesses are no longer limited to operating from just one location because of the high speed broadband requirements for their business operation. Through this agreement with Intelsat S.A, which is the operator of the world’s first globalised network and leader in integrated satellite solutions, Vodacom Business Nigeria will deploy the Intelsat EPICNG satellite services, which is a next generation of satellite technology; to its enterprise customers to enable them to operate from anywhere they want throughout Nigeria.

    Intelsat’s Regional Vice President, Africa Sales, Brian Jakins, said: “Intelsat EpicNG enables higher data rate applications and smaller terminals that give enterprises the avenue to expand into new regions and take advantage of business opportunities regardless of where they occur.

    He further noted that with the improved performance delivered by Intelsat EpicNG, Vodacom Business Nigeria’s customers will use the satellite services on Intelsat 35e to deliver fast, high quality and resilient broadband connectivity to the banking, oil and gas, and enterprise sectors across West Africa for an improved quality of service.

    On the agreement, Vodacom Business Nigeria Managing Director, Lanre Kolade, said: “With plans in top gear to deploy the Intelsat EPICNG satellite services, this will enable Vodacom Business Nigeria to deliver an efficient, quick, reliable, secure broadband solution with a low monthly recurring cost within the shortest time to our Enterprise customers.”

    Kolade said the deal would further allow Vodacom to connect businesses located where there is no access to terrestrial and mobile networks, therefore bringing them closer to their employees, customers as well as other businesses, to help empower them to remain operational and profitable.

    He said: “As a leading provider of corporate connectivity and telecommunications solutions, Vodacom always strives to stay up-to-date with the technological needs and requirements of the changing environment hence the reason for this agreement.”

  • Vodacom seeks early exposure of kids to ICT

    Vodacom Business Nigeria has stressed the need for kids  to be exposed early in life to  information communication technology (ICT).

    The firm which organised robotics training for 36 pupils of S.S. Peter & Paul Nursery and Primary School, Ikate, Elegushi, Lagos, said new trends such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are fast gaining global traction.

    Speaking on the occasion, its Senior Manager, Product Portfolio, Abu Etu, said: “As part of our commitment to empower the next generation in Nigeria through ICT, Vodacom believes that it is important to promote training for pupils at the primary level of education. This will prepare them from the early stages of their lives for the post-digital age, which will demand technical knowledge and skills.”

    Also speaking, the General Manager, Loving Gaze, Barbara Pepoli, said: “We are excited that our pupils had the opportunity to learn new things beyond the walls of the classroom.”

    Getting children interested in technology is very important for our school and this field trip is a great way to make technology come to life for our pupils.”

     

  • Vodacom: technology’ll drive efficiency, productivity

    The Managing Director, Vodacom Business Nigeria, Lanre Kolade, has advised entrepreneurs in Nigeria to adopt new technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data Analytics currently disrupting the business world, to drive productivity, efficiency and remain competitive.

    Kolade who spoke at the Business Day CEO Forum Nigeria 2017, an annual thought leadership initiative in collaboration with McKinsey & Co, he said: “Technology such as IoT enables growth across business sectors. Today, many organisations are using this technology to cut costs, reduce risk, increase revenue and efficiency.”

    According to him African businesses are gradually adopting IoT, with Nigeria being one of the leading markets on the continent. This adoption is driven by the increasing availability of affordable smart devices, coupled with the need for enterprises to deliver shareholder value. According to the Vodafone’s Global IoT barometer report 2017, the adoption of IoT has grown significantly from 12 per cent in 2013 to 29 per cent in 2017 and 49 per cent of these adopters use IoT in conjunction with analytics to improve business decision-making.

    In Africa, disruptive technologies such as IoT holds significant potential and opportunities are found in different sectors ranging from finance, insurance to manufacturing and agriculture, including the education sector. Organisations of all sizes now use IoT to optimise processes, automate production and monitor the supply chain.

    Kolade said: “We can use technology to disrupt education, with broadband penetration, digitisation becomes possible and education contents will be more accessible to all in Nigeria.”

    Vodacom is using technology to address challenges in, education, healthcare and agriculture in Africa. Vodacom recently deployed IoT solution for education and healthcare in Kaduna State using a mobile school management solution which provides real-time visibility of all administrative activities at over 4000 schools. The healthcare solution monitors stock level and distribution of essential medicines in over 250 medicine dispensary facilities in the state.
