CGC Premier League: Customs keep perfect run as Wikki, Offa win five-set thrillers

Day 8 of the 2025 CGC Volleyball Premier League Final Phase produced another round of pulsating contests at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, as the battle for league supremacy sharpened across both the men’s and women’s categories.

Coming off an intense Day 7 that saw dominant outings from Nigeria Customs and statement wins from Sunshine, COAS, Benue Queens and Life Camp, yesterday’s fixtures added fresh twists to the unfolding title race.

In the men’s division, Nigeria Customs Service extended their ruthless run with a straight-sets victory over Kano Pillars, winning 3–0 (25–22, 28–26, 25–22). Despite Pillars putting up stiff resistance—especially in the tight second set—Customs’ superior organization and attacking precision once again proved decisive, keeping their unbeaten streak intact.

NSCDC bounced back strongly from previous setbacks with a 3–1 win over COAS Spikers (19–25, 25–21, 25–21, 25–20). After losing the first set, NSCDC grew into the match, tightening their block and cutting out errors to claim three straight sets and secure a vital victory.

In one of the most dramatic matches of the day, Offa VC edged NAF Rockets 3–2 (23–25, 25–23, 25–23, 21–25, 15–11) in a five-set thriller. The contest swung back and forth, but Offa’s composure in the decider earned them a memorable win.

Nigeria Police Force returned to winning ways with a solid 3–1 triumph over UCEM (28–26, 18–25, 25–20, 25–18). Police’s superior defensive discipline and late-set execution made the difference, despite UCEM’s strong second-set response.

CNS Spikers capped the men’s fixtures with an emphatic 3–0 victory over Sunshine Spikers (25–22, 25–20, 25–18), a result that not only halted Sunshine’s Day 7 momentum but also strengthened CNS’ position among the leading contenders.

The women’s category opened with COAS Spikers asserting dominance over Kada Emeralds in a 3–0 sweep (25–13, 25–22, 25–10), showcasing sharp serving and quick attacking transitions. Life Camp maintained their impressive form with another straight-sets win—this time against Olalomi Royal Queens (25–9, 25–16, 25–20)—further consolidating their top-four aspirations.

Anambra Queens and Wikki Queens delivered one of the most gripping matches of Day 8, with Anambra emerging 3–2 winners (25–22, 24–26, 23–25, 25–12, 15–13). After trailing by two sets to one, Anambra stormed back with an authoritative fourth set before sealing the decider in a tense finish. In a heavyweight clash, Nigeria Customs Service Women overcame CNS Spikers 3–1 (19–25, 25–17, 25–21, 25–19). Despite losing the opening set, Customs demonstrated their trademark resilience and tactical adjustment to reverse the tide and strengthen their hold on the title race.

Benue Queens, impressive on Day 7, fell 0–3 to a determined NSCDC side (25–18, 25–22, 25–17). NSCDC were sharp and efficient throughout, denying Benue the rhythm that defined their previous outings. The victory keeps NSCDC firmly in the hunt for a strong finish.

Kano Pillars, Customs, CNS extend dominance at CGC Volleyball Premier League:

The intensity of the 2025 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League final phase heightened midweek as teams across both the men’s and women’s categories delivered pulsating displays at the indoor sports hall of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

Building on the momentum from Day 1—where CNS Spikers, Nigeria Customs Service, and the Police Force recorded commanding victories—Day 2 produced even more compelling performances, comeback attempts, and tactical master classes as teams continued their push toward the title.

In the Men’s cadre, CNS Spikers showed once again why they are the reigning champions, sweeping aside Kada Kings 3–0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-13). Their ball distribution, service accuracy, and defensive organization proved too much for Kada, who struggled to keep pace as CNS tightened their hold on the competition.

Fellow heavyweights Nigeria Customs Service were equally ruthless, battling past a spirited Offa Volleyball Club to secure a straight-sets victory 3–0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-15). Offa pushed hard in the opening set, forcing deuce, but once Customs settled into rhythm, their power hitting and superior blocking carried them comfortably through the remaining sets.

COAS Spikers, after faltering on Day 1, bounced back strongly with a well-earned 3–1 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22) win against NAF Rockets. The soldiers’ side displayed renewed focus and tactical discipline, shrugging off NAF’s attempts at a comeback.

The shock of the day came when Kano Pillars, buoyed by their Day 1 win over COAS, halted the unbeaten run of the Nigeria Police Force, powering to a 3–0 (25-16, 29-27, 25-21) victory. The second set—arguably one of the most dramatic of the tournament so far—saw Police squander multiple set-point opportunities. Pillars’ resilience and composure proved decisive as they tightened their grip to close out the straight-sets win.

In other matches, NSCDC recovered from a disappointing Day 1 showing to defeat Sunshine Spikers 3–0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19), while Nigeria Correctional Service posted their first win of the final phase, beating UCEM 3–1 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 26-24) in a closely fought contest.

The women’s division delivered its fair share of highlights as well, with CNS Spikers Women cruising past Anambra Queens in a commanding 3–0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) performance. Their fluid teamwork, fast transitions, and aggressive serves kept Anambra on the back foot throughout.

COAS Spikers Women continued their brilliant start to the final phase with a clean sweep against Olalomi Spikers (25-13, 25-10, 25-16), maintaining their strong push for a podium finish.

The NAF Queens put up one of the most dominant outings of the day, dispatching Wikki Queens 3–0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-11) with a display marked by precision attacking and disciplined blocking.

Reigning women’s champions Nigeria Customs Service also showed their quality, overwhelming Kada Emeralds 3–0 (25-15, 25-6, 25-16). The second set, in which they conceded only six points, underscored their championship pedigree and sheer superiority.

The standout match in the women’s category saw Life Camp edge Benue Queens in a dramatic five-set thriller 3–2 (25-27, 19-25, 25-17, 27-25, 17-15). Life Camp staged a remarkable comeback after losing the first two sets, showing incredible mental strength to clinch a nail-biting decider. The match stood out as one of the most entertaining of the entire tournament so far.

Day 2 affirmed the dominance of tournament favourites CNS Spikers and Nigeria Customs, while Kano Pillars’ victory over the Police added new intrigue to the title race. With several teams now finding form and others desperate to recover from early setbacks, the stage is set for even more intense battles as the 2025 CGC Volleyball Premier League final phase continues in Abuja.
