  • Ekiti wants voters’ registration extended

The Ekiti State Government has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the duration of the voters registration.

The Head of Service, Olugbenga Faseluka, made the call when he went round the local government areas to monitor the exercise.

Describing the turnout as impressive, Faseluka said the time frame for the exercise would be grossly inadequate to accommodate all eligible voters waiting to be captured.

According to him, it took about seven minutes to register one voter, which led to a huge number of spill-over of people at the close of the exercise each day. He added that it would have been more conducive if the exercise had been extended till 5pm daily.

Faseluka said the government will follow up on the complaints and requests of stakeholders, particularly on the creation of additional polling units in some areas.

The head of service, who stressed that the sensitisation/monitoring programme was apolitical, emphasised that the focus was to secure the future of Ekiti as an entity, adding that the exercise was to allow those that relocated to transfer their cards, replace damaged cards, and allow new voters to register.

Governor Ayodele Fayose declared last Friday a work-free day for workers and directed senior civil servants to mobilise and monitor the exercise in their respective localities to ensure that as many eligible people as possible register.

The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu, and the Council Chairman Aderemi Ayeni, appealed for the establishment of more polling units in the council to forestall a disenfranchisement of many people residing at Obasanjo Estate, Shasha Market and other settlements along the Ikere/Ado road.

The Arakaja of Igbara-Odo, Oba Edward Jayeola, who said the community organised a house-to-house sensitisation for unregistered eligible voters to do so before the end of the exercise, called for additional registration machines to ease the process and allow all interested eligible voters to register within the specified time frame.

  • Wike to monarchs: Mobilise people for voter’s registration or lose recognition

Ahead of the 2019 general elections in Nigeria, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has read the riot act to traditional rulers in the state.

The governor directed the traditional rulers to mobilize their people for the forthcoming voter’s registration exercise.

He charged the royal fathers to ensure that the number of registered voters in their respective domains increases or they will lose recognition.

The governor, who spoke on Friday when the Government Recognized Ikwerre Traditional Rulers led by Eze Blessing Wagor paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Port Harcourt, added that voter’s registration is vital to democracy.

He declared that any traditional ruler whose number of registered voters fails to increase after the exercise will lose his recognition by the state government.

He also stressed that the mobilization for the registration transcends party affiliation, hence traditional rulers must be involved.

Wike said: “Go and mobilize your people for the registration exercise. Any community where the numbers of its registered voters fail to improve will have the recognition of its traditional ruler withdrawn.

“This has nothing to do with party politics.  It is necessary because it will be used for developmental purposes.”

He also charged the traditional rulers not be involved in partisan politics as it will negatively affect them.

Obaseki tasks Inec on voter’s registration

Edo State voters have been advised to take advantage of the voters’ registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Godwin Obaseki, who gave the advice in a statement issued by his spokesman, Ben Atu, said it is the only weapon that would qualify them to vote at the general election. He described it as “a call to duty for all eligible voters”.

Obaseki said: “The survival of democracy and the growth of Edo state depend on each individual being able to express his or herself by voting. No doubt, your vote is your right. but, if you do not register, you are not only denying yourself the right to vote, but also denying yourself the opportunity to determine the leader of your choice”.

He, however cautioned against double registration, which he described as a criminal offence and anyone who is caught in the act will be made to face the wrath of the law.

The APC flag-bearer who, also tasked the INEC to ensure a hitch-free exercise, appealed to the commission to avoid the usual logistics problems of fuel, lack of ink in the printers, laptop  failure and other excuses, which may affect the number of voters that would be registered on a daily basis.

He said: “The time is short and efforts must be made to ensure that people are not stranded due to failure or shortage of working tools”, Obaseki said.

Obaseki, however, called on the media, religious organizations, various women and youth groups, traditional institutions, and advocacy groups to intensify their campaign for mass mobilization and participation for the exercise.
