  • ‘Don’t sell your votes’

Lagosians have been advised not to sell their votes, to avoid installing a bad government.

They were also urged to shun the antics of cash-and-carry politicians, who might lure them with money

Spokesman for Akinwunmi Ambode Kommittee of Friends (AA’KOF), Elder Cornelius Olopade, gave the advice yesterday.

He was speaking at a rally organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yaba, Lagos State.

Olopade said the electors should vote for candidates, based on their performances and their parties.

He said he was sure that if those were the criteria used, the APC governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and other party’s candidates would win with a landslide.

Ambode, who said he was flabbergasted by the massive turnout at the campaign, added that with the continuity of an APC government, the dream of turning Lagos into a mega city would be realised.

He urged Lagosians to vote for him and other APC candidates “so that together we will turn Lagos to a mega city.”

The National President of the All Christian Leaders & Ministers Forum (ACLMF), Dr. Sam Ogedengbe, has said Christians in Lagos State are supporting Ambode and other APC candidates.

Ogedengbe, who spoke yesterday at the group’s forum in Abule-Egba, Lagos, said: “We‘ve not received money from anybody. We support APC because it is a party that cares for the masses.”

He noted that the elections would be peaceful and credible “because God loves Nigeria. However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be impartial in performing its duties.”

  • ‘Lagos ‘ll give 85 per cent of votes to Buhari’

‘Lagos ‘ll give 85 per cent of votes to Buhari’

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has promised to fight the infrastructure battle in Lagos, if elected as the president. Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Otunba Oladele Ajomale said at the mega rally in Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, that the state will give Buhari 85 per cent of the votes. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU revisits the carnival-like rally.

Lagos, the former Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is perceived as the stronghold of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The state lived to expectation at the weekend when the campaign train of its presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, rolled into the Centre of Excellence.

The crowd was huge. But, the crowd outside the Teslim Balogun Stadium, the venue of the rally, was more than the crowd inside the main bowl. It was not a rented crowd. The army of supporters were not wooed with foods and drinks. But, they came from the 20 Local Government Areas and the 37 Local Council Development Councils (LCDAs), waving their brooms, singing and dancing. They defiled the early morning downpour as they waited patiently for the man they perceived as the symbol of change, Gen. Buhari. Even, those who left the stadium for the Friday Jumat service, returned to capture a glimpse of the General, who had served as the military Head of State 30 years ago.

Gen. Buhari walked freely among the people, who are eager to vote for him on February 14. He was the tallest in the crowd. When he waved the broom, the symbol of the party, the crowd went into an ecstasy. The master of ceremony, Mrs. Abike Dabiri, aroused the crowd when she said: “Baba, oyoyo.” The people chorused the slogan. Then, the ace musician, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, sung the familiar tune: Sai Baba, Sai Buhari. Brooms filled the air as youths decked in customised t-shirts with fez caps to match, were locked in celebrations.

The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who was impressed by the turn-out, challenged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to a duel. Basking in the euphoria of an imminent victory for the Buhari/Osinbajo ticket, he said: “I have seen people sweat for change. The youths want change. My prayer is that nobody should be foolish enough to ignore this momentum for change.”

The Chairman of the APC in Lagos State, Otunba Dele Ajomale, and the governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, promised to deliver 85 per cent of the votes to Gen. Buhari. Assuring that the progressive beat will continue in Lagos, Ajomale said: “Lagos will deliver 85 percent of the votes to you (Buhari). Jonathan will not get 25 per cent of the votes.” Also, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), led by Alhaji Agbede, and National Road Transport Employment Association, led by Ahmed Musa, endorsed the flag bearer.

Smiles lit up the face of Buhari, who was accompanied by his wife, Hajia Aishat, and running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and wife, Dolapo. But, other matters also agitated him as he saw the sea of heads, including the jobless youths and artisans, who needed regular power supply for uninterrupted economic life. Owing to lack of electricity, the organisers had arranged for an alternative source of power. He took cognizance of the stand-by generator emitting fume, a sign of power outage and failure of infrastructure battle by the inept Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government. As he listened to other leaders as they addressed the rally, he was in a sober reflection.

Not given to frivolities, he addressed the crowd as a father and leader that he is. The people also nodded affirmatively to a leader that has been tested and can be trusted. Buhari promised a new lease of life, promising to resolve pressing national challenges, including corruption, insecurity and unemployment, if elected as the President.

Between 1976 and 1979, the APC flag bearer was the Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Chairman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Between January 1984 and August 1985, he was also living in Lagos as the Commander-In-Chief. Thus, he is conversant with the problems affecting the metropolis. Thus, Buhari promised to fight the infrastructure battle in Lagos State, as part of moves to restore the glory of the former Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The former military leader said the state will be given a special attention as the economic hub and commercial nerve centre. “For Lagos, in particular, they have allowed infrastructure decay to become the lots of Lagos. Infrastructure maintenance ought to be the responsibilities of the government being a former federal capital. I assure you APC will do that, he said.“

In his view, the PDP-led Federal Government has failed the test of leadership. The proofs, he said, are  insecurity, economic depression, bribery and corruption and unemployment. He said: “Whatever we are going to do will help restore Nigeria back.”

Buhari offered hope to the jubilating crowd. He said: “ After all what we have gone through in the past 15 years of the PDP, the APC has identified three fundamental programmes that have to be taken immediately. One of them is to tackle insecurity. Two, returning back the economy on track, and tackling bribery and corruption. But, whatever we are going to do, we must secure Nigeria first. Most importantly, is the Northeast where hundreds of school children are still missing. We are confident that our military can perform, but what they need now is leadership.”

The former Head of State also promised to tackle corruption, which he identified as an obstacle. He said, if bribery and corruption, gave way, all will be well with Nigeria. “We have more than 60 percent of youths in this country, whether they went to school or not, it is the responsibility of government to provide jobs. Whichever way we look at it, corruption still remains the bane of the country.”

Buhari urged Nigerians to “vote out the PDP from the top to the bottom,” adding that it is in the national interest. “Where is the Nigerian Airways? Where is the Nigerian National Shipping Line? Where are they now? Go and find out how much money they had made from 1999 till now. And where is NEPA? he queried.

The APC flag bearer added: “”After spending about $20 billion on power, what we are getting is still very insignificant. This is because of the incompetence of the PDP from top to bottom. Nigerians have suffered enough and must ensure that PDP is voted out.”

It was a special home-coming for Osinbajo, who had served the state as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice. He urged Lagosians to vote for change, adding: “It is time for God to rescue Nigeria from corruption, poverty, joblessness and insecurity. Our time of deliverance has come. The train of freedom has arrived. On February 14, with your PVC, you will cause a change, a fundamental change in this country. That change is what we have been waiting for since 1960. It shall arrive February 14 when you vote General Muhammadu Buhari as the President of Nigeria.”

The legal scholar acknowledged that some people are afraid of Buhari, adding that these people are fueling the rumour that he will “islamise” Nigeria. The former university don said it is because they fear that  Buhari will end. Osinbajo added: “If corruption does not end, poverty cannot end. If corruption does not end, job cannot appear from anywhere. If corruption does not end, education cannot survive. With corruption, you cannot build hospitals when some people are keeping all the money in their pockets. Don’t let them deceive you. Some people are saying there is an Islamization agenda. Tell them it is not true. General Buhari is an honest man, he is a straight forward man. He will fight corruption. He wants this country to be better and, by the grace of the Almighty God, on May 29, he will be the President of Nigeria.”

The APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, described Buhari as the best candidate to salvage the country during the crisis period, noting that when developed countries were in similar situation, they beckoned on their retired Generals for good governance. He said: “In the last 70 years of nationhood, you have seen series of political crises. But, one man has been very consistent, steadfast, brilliant, courageous, resolute, and an advocate of the poor. That is Buhari.”

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and his Lagos, Osun, Edo and Imo state counterparts; Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Chief Rauf Aregbesola, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and Owelle Rochas Okorocha; and the National Deputy Chairman, Mr. Segun Oni, told the crowd that Buhari is the answer. Other APC chieftains, including the National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Chief Pius Akinyelure, former Ekiti State Governors Niyi Adebayo and Kayode Fayemi, Senator Bukola Saraki,  former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, were in the same frame of mind.

Fashola, the host governor, urged Lagosians to collect their voter’s cards, ahead of the poll, stressing that they can only change the government by voting wisely.

Amaechi observed that the PDP is jittery because change is imminent. He warned against rigging, saying that Nigerians will resist fraud.

Oshiomhole said: “The challenge for Nigeria today is about creating jobs. They will not be created through token policies. It is time to bring a trusted and trusted leader. Gen. Buhari has no money, yet, he was governor, minister of petroleum and Head of State. You need a man who will not steal to curb corruption.”

Aregbesola said: “The issue involved in this election is the sustenance of poverty and abolition of poverty. If you are interested in poverty, misery and hardship, vote for the PDP. If you believe there must be an end to poverty, misery and hardship, vote for the APC.”

Senator Oluremi Tinubu said: “Today, we are witnessing the beginning of the restoration of Nigeria.”

  • Youth told not to sell their votes

Youth in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been advised to vote wisely and not sell their birthrights in the forthcoming general elections.

Mr Justice Duncan, a social speaker and the coordinator of Youth Alive For Progress (YAFP), a nongovernmental organization which champions the course of the youth, mostly in the FCT, said that the time for Nigerian youth to stand up for their right is now or never, that if they fail to do it now, it will take another four years to be corrected.

According to Duncan, who spoke during an electoral sensitization campaign in Abuja, the government of Nigeria led by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has taken the youth for granted for too long, by using them during elections and abandoning them after they get into offices.

“The politicians have used us for too long, without considering our plight or how we survive during these hard times. During elections they will make all sort of promises without fulfilling anyone them. When we look for them in their offices, they will use tight security to prevent us from entering, because, we are no longer useful to them.

“All these have to stop now, the using youth for political violence because of peanuts given to them, has to stop now. If they want to use anybody for violence, they should go and use their children. We should not allow them to use us and dump us again, because, we are not rags. We should not sell our birthrights for little pennies and suffer in future.

“It is time for us in the FCT and entire Nigeria to stand up for our right and vote for a government that we remove us from this prolonged struggles, corruption, killings and maladministration that we are experiencing in Nigeria today. The youth are the life-wire of the society, so we should prove that to our leaders.

  • Saraki to Nigerians: cast your votes without sentiment

Saraki to Nigerians: cast your votes without sentiment

    •Buhari/Osinbajo ticket ‘ll restore Nigeria

Former Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki has urged Nigerians to eschew sentiments in the 2015 general elections.

Saraki, a senator and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noted that the victory of the Gen. Muhammadu Buhari/Prof Yemi Osinbajo ticket in next year’s presidential election would restore Nigeria.

The senator representing Kwara Central, who addressed reporters at the weekend in Ilorin, the state capital, said: “We have now removed religion. Let us look at the candidate, access their character, their capacity, their ability to fight issues that are important. This is not about sentiment, it is about Nigeria; it is not personal.

“General Buhari and Prof Osinbajo are people who want to restore Nigeria. These are not individuals that are going there to make a mess of themselves. They are going there to restore and make Nigeria better.

“Now, the difference between APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is clear in the way we conducted our primaries. The way we picked our candidates and the way they emerged. PDP had wanted the elections to be about religion. Now, there is no religious issue. PDP has a Christian and Muslim on the ticket, APC has a Muslim and a Christian on the ticket.

“The emergence of the APC presidential and vice presidential candidates shows the kind of party that we have. If you go back to about nine months ago, some of the stories that were being given by the PDP were that APC will break; that the party is about people with self interest, a party that is interested in is ambition.

“When it came to the issue of vice president you all saw again what transpired. The sensitivity of issues of like religion, give and take and integrity were the factors that played the key role. If it was about self ambition, capacity of resources and political structure, you know who would have been the vice president, but these are people who are ready to make that sacrifice. Truly APC is showing that it is an amalgam of people that can make sacrifices. It is a party that really wants to move Nigeria forward.

“That the party cannot go to a convention or primaries without collapsing; that there will be no unity etc, you all saw democracy at it best; you all saw in the primary how delegates came out in drove to vote. The primary was very transparent and everybody that participated accepted the outcome of the result and those that lost also gallantly approved and recommended and gave their support to the winner.

“And the party shows unity, it shows it not a party of selfish individuals but a party with people that have the mission to save Nigeria. The presidential primary witnessed internal democracy at its best. You saw what happened at the state primaries across the country. I don’t think there is any state in the entire 36 states in the APC where there were parallel congresses, unlike in PDP where there were parallel congresses, parallel results and parallel result sheets. In some places we have three or four results sheets.

“For some of us who used to be in the PDP we were stunned at what happened that in some states they had two to three congresses and up till now some are still in court disputing the results.

“It was even in APC that you would have expected this kind of breakdown, but instead of that, despite all the issues you can see that in most of the state’s primary election results were declared on the spot. It shows you that APC is a party that is ready to serve because the interest of Nigeria and the processes of democracy come first as opposed to selfish interest.”

  • Fed Govt votes N100b for ranches

Fed Govt votes N100b for ranches

The Federal Government is set to approve N100 billion to assist states establish mini modern ranches across the country.

This is to check the movement of cattles and prevent cattle rearers/farmers clashes.

Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, who spoke  to State House correspondents at the end of National Economic Council (NEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo in Abuja, yesterday said it was one of the 15 recommendations his subcommittee presented to NEC. He said final resolutions would be taken on the issue in  subsequent FEC meetings.

He also said cattle rearers moving into the country from the neighboring countries would soon be registered.

The governor said the report highlighted critical issues that must be considered among others, including struggle for land and water resources by herdsmen and farmers; uncontrolled influx of nomadic farmers into the country; and issues on Grazing Reserves in States.

He said: “CBN (is) to provide seed funding of N100billion to assist states establish mini modern ranches across the federation.

    “All grazing reserves/cattle routes already gazette and encroached upon should be recovered and improved upon taking into consideration present day realities;

“Ranching and modern technologies of livestock production be established- meat processing and packaging, others halal certified; sensitisation/education workshops for herdsmen and farmers to build trust and confidence between the parties – NOA (National Orientation Agency) and relevant MDAs (minsitries, departments and agencies) to handle.”

  • Fed Govt votes N1.22tr for fuel subsidy

Fed Govt votes N1.22tr for fuel subsidy

The Federal Government  plans to spend  N1.221.4trillion to subsidise the importation of premium motor spirit (PMS) or petrol and dual purpose kerosene (DPK) or kerosene next year.

The proposal is contained in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) sent to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan for consideration and approval.

A total of N971.4billion is being proposed as subsidy on  PMS while N250 billion would be spent as subsidy on DPK.

There was no provision for kerosene subsidy in this year’s budget of N4.724 trillion.

The document also contained a projected sum of N4.817trillion as budget for next year.

The Fiscal Responsibility Act provides that the National Assembly must consider and approve the MTEF/FSP before the president presents the budget to a joint session of the National Assembly.

The Federal Government also projected that it would spend N1.029 trillion as capital expenditure for ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) while N1.801 trillion would be spent as personnel costs for the MDAs.

According to the document, service wide votes would gulp N376.05 billion while N570 billion is projected as new borrowings next year.

As part of efforts to tackle crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism, the security agencies are expected to start ground and aerial surveillance while the Justice Ministry would ensure speedy prosecution of oil thieves and vandals.

The document read in part: “The activities of crude oil thieves and oil pipeline vandals remain the main risks to oil production. The potential implications of their activities are a reduction in government revenue with further impacts on government debts and fiscal deficits as well as pressures on the exchange rate.

“Given the role of oil production volume on government finances, government remains committed to curbing these nefarious activities. Consequently, it is intensifying security, particularly ground and aerial surveillance, around oil facilities through the combined efforts of security agencies and local communities’ participation.

“These security forces under the National Executive Council Committee are being better equipped to checkmate the activities of oil thieves and pipeline vandals. There would also be better engagements of the Ministry of Justice and lawyers for faster prosecution of oil thieves.

“In addition, a quick passage of the PIB will undo the uncertainties undermining new investments in the oil industry, thereby raising oil production.”

The Federal Government also told the National Assembly that it has already set up a committee which is expected to partner with other agencies to tackle the Boko Haram sect.

It said: “The issue of insurgency in parts of the Northeast is still a risk to economic and commercial activities, and by extension, government tax revenue. Consequently, government will intensify the utilisation of its three-pronged approach including a firm security response, continued political dialogue and a package of development assistance to check mating the security situation.

“Already, a Presidential Initiative for the North East (PINE) Committee is working together with some development partners to finding a lasting solution to the insurgency.”

Meanwhile, the MTEF/FSP was yesterday committed to the Senate Committee on Finance and National Planning for more legislative work.

Senate President David Mark gave the affected committees two weeks to report back to Senate.

  • EU votes 415m euro for Africa’s integration

EU votes 415m euro for Africa’s integration

The European Union (EU)  has allocated 415 million euro to support Africa’s integration programmes.

The decision was reached yesterday in Brussels, Belgium, according to a statement issued in Abuja.

The allocation is meant to fund the first phase of a new programme. It is the first ever EU programme in development and cooperation that covers Africa as a whole to  address trans-national and global challenges, such as migration and mobility, climate change and security.

The support is coming under the  EU-Africa Partnership, which the two continents established in 2007 to put their relations on a new footing and to establish a strategic partnership, responding to mutual interests and based upon a strong political relationship and close cooperation in key areas.

The programme, which is financed from the EU budget will be a key instrument for the European Commission to implement, in close cooperation with African partners, the joint political priorities of the roadmap which was adopted by African and EU Heads of State and Government during the 4th EU-Africa summit in April this year.

The Pan-African Programme, which was announced by President Manuel Barroso at the 4th Africa-EU summit in Brussels in April 2014, will amount to 845 million euro from 2014 to 2020.

It will contribute, among others, to increased mobility on the African continent, better trade relations across regions and also better equip both continents

The first phase that was launched yesterday, the statement explained “will include projects ranging from sustainable agriculture, environment, and higher education to governance, infrastructure, migration, information and communication technology, as well as research and innovation.

“Concrete projects will, for example, support election observation missions operated by the African Union in its member states or improve the governance of migration and mobility within Africa and between Africa and the EU. Some initiatives will benefit citizens directly, such as a student’s academic exchange programme or the harmonisation of academic curricula across a range of African universities facilitating the mobility of African students and academics.”

The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, was quoted to have said that just like in Europe and elsewhere, the  challenges faced by Africa can no longer be tackled within national borders.

  • ‘Aregbesola will win 70 per cent of the votes’

‘Aregbesola will win 70 per cent of the votes’

Three days to the August 9 governorship election in Osun State, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, an activist and Director-General of De Raufs Volunteer Group, which is championing the ideals and reelection bid of Governor Rauf Aregbesola is confident that the governor will get another four-year term. He spoke with ADEKUNLE YUSUF.

Long before Governor Rauf Aregbesola declared interest in running for a second term in office, De Raufs has been busy campaigning for his reelection. Why is your group so passionate about having the governor win reelection?

What I want to say on that is very simple. It took us months to study Governor Rauf Aregbesola. During our investigation, we unraveled some information that many people may not be familiar with. I am not saying that he is the best in the world, but among the few that do not attach importance to what we call ephemeral of office, he stands out.

What do you mean by that?

He is not somebody who allows the mentality of the so called public office holders who carry  everything on their heads thinking that without them, the generality of the people that they are destined to rule cannot survive. He is one of the few that believe truly in the emancipation of the people by using the instrumentality of office to change their lives for the beter. He is among afew politicians that will not betray the trust of the people – and it is very rare to see politicians that will not tell lies. I am teling you, sincerely speaking, that Aregbesola does not tell lies. And once a leader fails to tell lies, he allows the fear of God to run in his veins.

Once you have God, you have everything.  I have tested Rauf Aregbesola. In a week, I spend close to seventy-eight to seventy-nine hours with him. It affords me the opportunity to know him critically and from inside his character and life. Whatever you discussed with him, he will not tell anybody; he maintains what we call secret. Once you discuss anything with him in confidence, he will not discuss it with anybody immediately you leave, including his wife. I am saying this authoritatively. I was with him one night. Somebody was talking to an elderly person trying to cover the governor on some issues. I just heard the governor’s voice saying, “I did not say that. That is not what I told you. Tell people the exact thing I told you. I don’t tell lies and I hate people lying using my name.”  But if you ask the governor why he is doing that to the man, he will just tell you that the issue is between the two of them.

Apart from the fact that he is not a liar, he belives so much in God. He has reduced the attraction that people have given to the office of the governor. That means if you have the likes of him as president of this country, things will change. In his character, he has shown to the public that he is just a representative of the people and that it is the people that have power over him; that he is not the lord over the people. He behaves in a way that shows that without the people he canot be there. He brings everyone on board because he does not like division or segregation. Sometimes I don’t feel comfortable about some people around him, people I think are not honest. But he will say he can manage everybody. But immediately Aregbesola discovers you are not honest, he will still manage and tolerate you till you expose yourself. I don’t have temperament for such but he has. There are uncountable qualities this man has that I have never seen in our conventional politicians in my entire life. When Aregbesola is committed to an idea, he puts his life there. That makes him to stand out among our politicians. Even sometimes when he describes himself as a politician, I do tell him that he is not a politician. He will ask me why and I will tell him that a conventional politician will not behave the he behaves.

Aregbesola is also a leader that is ready and in a hurry to fix everything. That is why he wants to give his best in the area of education, thinking for the children of the people. He says he too is a product of public schools, and asks if he is a product of public schools, why should he not use the instrumentality of office to rehabilitate the battered and the destroyed public school system. He says that during his time in school, there was everything in the public school because the public school was competitive. He will say the very best attended the public schools while those that could not cope attended private schools. Today, the reverse is the case. He is also very passionate about reviving the health sector. He says he cannot imagine that many people in the rural areas cannot have access to decent health facilities. While people in Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Kaduna, and other cities are living comfortably, they don’t bother to care about the rural dwellers who produce the foods they eat in the cities. When he realised that accidents have become incessant on our roads, he introduced the ambulance system. This is really saving lives – it takes care of the sick and the pregnant women.

And it is in all the senatorial districts, each senatorial distric having nine. Just call them on their number and the ambulance is already there. I know we have ambulances in our hospitals in Nigeria, but what we have here runs twenty-four hours all over the state. Apart from Lagos, where do you have that kind of thing? Since he inaugurated the ambulance system, the rate of mortality through accidents has reduced drastically – I have the hospital statistics. When some journalists had an accident recently the ambulance team gave them first aid and took them to the hospital promptly. We could have lost more than five of them but for the intervention of this great man. Those who are alive today among the victims will give gratitude to God and credit to the government of Aregbesola. Many members of the public who have benefitted from this initiative cannot also forget Rauf Aregbesola. In the past, when an acident happened, many of the victims died in the pool of their blood unattended to.

You can also see that the people are happy with his agricultural revolution. His initiative in the area of agriculture can also be linked with Fidel Castro’s ideology in the area of agriculture in Cuba. Agriculture runs in Cuba. I know what I am talking about, in the forseeable future, this state will be the largest food basket in the whole of the former Western region. With the foundation, the output we are recording in all our farms in the areas of fishery, livestock, etc has increased. Very soon, cocoa will be processed here. There will be no need for any cocoa farmer to travel elsewhere because all the cocoa products will be processed in Ede.

The thinking of Aregbesola is to make Osun the hub of agricultural production for the whole of the West, that we can do it since the climate favours us. He has also made a landmark in the area of social security. He realised that the insecurity problems Nigeria is going through today is as a result of lack of social security. What he is doing in the area of O’Yes is a way of giving social security to Nigerians. With that, the rate of criminality in Osun has reduced drastically – anyone can find out from the police. He has engaged the youth of this generation in socio-economic development of this state. In the area of road construction in the thirty local government areas, he has touched so many areas. Look at the working tools he has given to the police. How will the people not be happy? Where there is security, investors will come. Awolowo immortalised himself in the hearts of the people through his policies. Aregbesola is doing the same thing here. That is why he walks freely on all the streets and towns in Osun. How many state governors can walk freely on the streets of their states?

Going by what you have seen in the course of campaigns, are you confident that the people so appreciate his works that they will vote for him again?

Yes, I am sure of that. Every Friday and Sunday, he makes beggars happy by identifying with them and giving them money. How many governors do that? How many times has President Goodluck Jonathan done that? How many times has the president visited an orphanage? How many times has the president dined and wined with destitutes or the downtrodden masses? How many times has the president invited the poor masses to the government house to share the dinning table with him? Aregbesola has done that on many occassions where people with special needs were invited to government house, organising dinner for them and giving them sense of belonging that they are part of us. His style of governance gives the impression that he does not fancy vanity or luxury at all.

Beyond what you ascribed to the governor, to what extent are you also counting on members of your organization in all the 30 local government areas in the state to win next Saturday poll?

Anytime we hold meetings or rallies, I am always amazed at the way they work. They are very committed. Recently, I tested them to know whether their loyalty and devotion is real or not. I asked each chapter to produce within 24 hours at least five hundred members of our organisation that have voter’s card (he opens his laptop to show the figures). Later, I extended it to 72 hours.

Before 72 hours, they produced more than that. I also did my own – I produced my entire family’s voter’s cards, my mother’s voter’s card, my wife’s voter’s card, my son’s voter’s card. I asked every member of De Raufs in all the 3011 polling units in Osun to do same. They produced all this in less than 72 hours. I was shocked. They gave me more than the figure requested for. To the glory of God, in each polling unit, we can conveniently tell you that we have over 150 members today that have voter’s cards. And we have their records stored permanently in our archive.

That is just our own organisation. Look at other countless organisations that also believe in the ideology of Aregbesola – look at the Oranmiyan, Aregbesola Victory Group, Vanguards, etc who also have their members too. Now let us talk about his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). All these are bloc votes. I can tell you authoritatively that Aregbesola cannot get less than 70 per cent of the votes. Anything less than 70 per cent is fraud. He will get 70 per cent from this exercise while other political parties will share the remaining 30 per cent. I can boldly tell you that the candidate of the Labour Party will have more votes than the PDP’s.

In other words, you are not afraid that violence or militarisation of the poll may suddenly change the game?

That is why I disagree with people who want to take over the state by force. I want to say that doing that will not help democracy in Nigeria. I therefore want to use this medium to advise and warn President Jonathan not to be deceived by the aggressive and over-ambitious politicians; otherwise they will throw Osun into chaos. If they come to Osun and rig election, the people of Osun will react. I know they will roll out their armoured tanks, but they should be ready to kill thousands. Rigging election here will bring sudden death to this democracy. I have been into detention 10 times because of the struggle for democracy.

And if democracy collapses on the head of Jonathan, posterity will never forgive him because anarchy is looming. Why? If you rig election in Osun, there will be crisis. This will trigger more crises elsewhere. It will raise the consciousness of people of Ekiti that have been robbed and kept quiet. Crisis will engulf that state and they may start killing people. In Adamawa where the governor was forcefully removed, it will raise the consciousnes of the people there and they may start challenging the impunity. Similar things may happen in Oyo and Ogun, where Governor Amosun is now feeling that he is unsafe. Same thing in Edo and Imo states. And when the crises engulf the whole nation, it will crumble democracy.

That is why I want Jonathan to look and think critically by not undemining the electoral sovereignty of Osun because it can bring quick death to our democracy. I know politicians don’t think about the welfare and security of the country; they only care for their pocket. That is why I am talking about the implications of rigging Osun election. If they do, what I said will happen. They should also know that nobody has the monopoly of violence; it will consume Mr. President and destroy everything because crisis knows no bounds. I want to appeal to him passionately that taking over Osun should be between life and death. It is a do-or-die affair. But he cannot toy with the life of the people and expect them to fold their arms. The people of Osun know what they have passed through in the last four years; they can sleep with their eyes closed because the state is very peaceful. Anyone who wants to return hooliganism to Osun should be expecting anarchy. His party is telling us that Jonathan wants to revenge for not voting for him in 2011, it will consume him if he dares it. It will consume every consumable democratic structure in Nigeria, and posterity will not forgive any of them.

    Sokoto votes N800m for scholarship

Sokoto State government has earmarked over N800 million to sponsor the education of 420 undergraduate and post-graduate students in five countries.

The Chairman of the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof Musa Garba Maitafsir, said this last Wednesday while addressing 121 Masters’ degrees students leaving for the Islamic University of Uganda.

He said the money meant for the students’ tuition/registration fees and living expenses, has been lodged in the account of the state scholarship board.

Maitafsir said over N350 million of the amount was earmarked for the training of 220 students in the university, while N450 million will be used to sponsor 200 undergraduates in various universities in Sudan, India, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates ( Dubai).

He said 99 students had finished their one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Education in Uganda.

“The 121 students leaving Sokoto for Uganda today will join the 99 already there for various Masters’ Degrees courses in the same Institution,” Maitafsir, added.

“Also, 160 are going to Sudan, 100 to India, 40 to Bangaladesh and 60 to Dubai,” he said.

Maitafsir sad the scheme was being pursued under the state government’s Teacher – Development Programme.

“The aim of the programme is to have a good school administrators and Teachers, and by extension, for Nigeria,” he said.

He appealed to the students to be good ambassadors of the state and Nigeria, and stay clear of acts capable of tarnishing the image of the country.

Spokespersons of the students, Abubakar Magawata and Kabiru Surajo praised the state for the gesture and promised that they would be of good behaviour and face their studies squarely.

“We will not fail the people of the state and Nigerians,” they assured.

  • Conference votes to retain Land Use Act in constitution

Conference votes to retain Land Use Act in constitution

Delegate to the National Conference resolved yesterday to retain the Land Use Act in the constitution.

A special committee, comprising leaders of the geo-political zones and other selected delegates, handled the contentious argument on whether or not the Land Use Act should be removed from the constitution.

The argument of those who wanted the Act retained in the 1999 Constitution was based on the belief that it would give room to oligarchs to the takeover of lands, which the Act has placed under the government as the intervening body.

Promoters of the argument noted that since land is not a renewable commodity, it should not be left at the mercy of speculators. They argued that removing it from the constitution would be discriminatory and unjust to the poor.

The proponents also argued that removing the Act from the constitution would create a dichotomy.

But the promoters of the retention of the Act in the constitution feared that the removal would amount to a grand design for the rich to buy land at cheap prices, a situation they said would lead to crises that cannot be managed.

Those opposed to its retention argued that though the Act should remain a law, it should be removed from the constitution to make it easy for amendment.

They argued that at present, amending the Act through the constitution has become too cumbersome and that in other countries, land tenure is universal while governments nearest to the communities serve land tenure better.

They complained that government have taken peoples land and have refused to pay compensation.

They insisted that since the promulgation of the Act, access to land had remained a major problem, thus hindering economic development.

The opponent said the power of compulsory acquisition vested on governors has been, in most cases, used arbitrarily without the payment of adequate compensation to land owners.

The committee noted that both sides of the argument were convincing; unfortunately, none of them agreed with the other and no side agreed to back down.

In its decision, which was accepted by the conference, it was noted that the Act would be retained in the constitution while certain amendments would be carried out in certain sections of the Act.
