  • Vulcaniser arraigned over alleged cell phone theft

    A 27 -year-old vulcaniser, Isiaka Waheed, was on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly absconding with a cell phone, valued at N78,000.

    According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, the accused committed the alleged offence on July 14 at Oshodi, Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole the Galaxy Samsung S6 cellphone belonging to Mr Gbolahan Babatunde.

    Awase said that the complainant gave his phone to the defendant when members of taskforce were chasing sellers from their business places.

    “The complainant gave his phone to the accused, his customer, for safe keeping in order for him to be able to pack his goods when they were being chased.

    “The accused ran away with the phone and refused to show up again at the complainant’s shop as usual.

    “When he was finally apprehended at his hiding place, he claimed to have sold the phone to an unknown person at the computer village at the rate of N20,000.

    “The accused was handed over to the police, “the prosecutor said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section carries three years jail term for stealing.

    Waheed, who resides at Ayobo-Ipaja, Lagos, entered a `not-guilty’ plea.

    The Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

    George said that the surety should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until Oct. 4 for mention.

    Vulcaniser arraigned for car battery theft

    A 28-year-old vulcaniser, Tope Ogunwa, has been arraigned at an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for allegedly stealing a car battery, valued at N35,000.

    The defendant of 16, Ona-Opemipo Street, Okitipupa, is standing trial on a one-count charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Zedekiah Orogbemi, told the court that on August 21, at old garage, the defendant stole the battery of a Toyota Picnic, property of Tade Gbadeyanka.

    He said the car, registered as Ondo KTP 601 AP, was kept in his custody, but when the owner came to pick up the car, the battery had been removed.

    Orogbemi added that the defendant was unable to explain the missing battery.

    He said the offence was punishable under Section 390 (9), Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1,  Laws of Ondo State 2006.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mr Banji Ayeomoni, granted the defendant bail at N30, 000 and a surety.

    He said the surety should produce evidence of one year tax clearance.

    Ayeomoni adjourned the case till September 28 for further hearing.

    Police arraign vulcaniser for defiling 14-year-old girl

    A 23-year-old vulcaniser, Sunday Abu, on Friday appeared in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly threatening a 14-year-old girl with weapon and defiled her.

    Abu of Jakande Estate in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Lagos, is standing trial on one-count charge of unlawful sexual assault which he pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate O. A. Ogunbowale, remanded the accused in prison and ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the office of Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

    Ogunbowale, however, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said that the sureties must be blood relations of the accused who must be property owners or civil servant.

    The magistrate, however, adjourned the case till March 23 for mention.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt.Ajaga Agboko, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 5, at 11:00p.m. at his residence.

    Agboko said that the accused threatened the victim with a dagger and forcefully defiled her.

    He said the offence contravened Section 258 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

    Vulcaniser held for ‘robbery and Indian hemp smoking’

    A vulcaniser has been arrested by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives for alleged robbery and Indian hemp smoking.

    The suspect was caught on Saturday, when he and his accomplice, who is at large, robbed a tricyclist popularly known as “Marwa”.

    He confessed to the robbery.

    The suspect said his friend used a knife to disposses the tricyclist, Okeke Chibuike, of his two mobile phones, money and other valuables.

    According to him, his friend dropped the stolen items when he spotted RRS operatives and ran away.

    The secondary school drop-out turned vulcaniser explained that he followed his friend to Iddo.

    “I was standing trying to take a tricycle to Oyingbo when I heard the shout of thief, thief. I saw my friend dropping handsets and a jack knife, I picked them up. That was how RRS operatives arrested me.” he said.

    “I have been learning vulcanising for over six years, and I am preparing for my freedom. It was my friend that robbed. He dropped the phone and the jack knife when he was being chased. I only picked them up to defend myself.

    “Abdullah is a street sweeper in Oyingbo. I know where he lives. He is the one that put me into this problem. I only followed him to Iddo”, he added.

    Also on Saturday, another vulcaniser Sola Adetona arrested behind Bobby Benson House in Onipanu, Lagos.

    Adetona, 28, said: “I was in a joint when I was arrested. I smoke weed to stimulate myself and to make myself work better.

    “I live in Mushin and I was arrested around 5pm. I want to plead for mercy. I am not married but I have impregnated a woman”.
