WAFU B Tourney : Bayelsa chieftain  tips  Prosperity Girls to lift trophy

Chairman of Bayelsa State  House of Assembly Committee on Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Barr. Tare Porri is backing  Bayelsa Queens to win  the sub- regional title for a second time after their  victory  in 2022.

The Prosperity Girls have been having a good run in the tournament that serves as qualifiers for CAF  Women Champions League and will tomorrow face  home side, ASEC Mimosas ,at  CKB Stadium in  Yamoussoukro to determine the zonal  champions.

Hon. Porri said he was  happy with the performance of the team and is looking forward to seeing them overrun their Ivorian  counterparts in the final match.

He said: “First on behalf of the good people of Bayelsa State, I want to congratulate the Prosperity Girls for not only winning their semi- final match but emerging victorious in all the matches they have played so far in the tournament. They’re not just Bayelsa Queens but representing the biggest country in Africa and we’re looking forward to crown their success  with the trophy

” To be sincere with you, we were not expecting anything less than 5-1 in the semi- finals clash but football being what it is, we came from a goal down to win 2-1 which to me was a great victory.

“I’m equally impressed with their progression in the tournament. In their first game, the team defeated Police Ladies of Ghana 2-1 before walloping Sam Nelly 4-1 and scored three unreplied goals in the second half against ASKO of Togo after a goalless first half which shows the character and resilience of the team and that’s what we expect to see in the finals, ” he stressed.

Porri who is the member representing Ekeremor Constituency 1 in the state Assembly,  urged  the team not to underrate their opponents , insisting  that the girls are experienced and well prepared for the challenge irrespective of the fact that ASEC Mimosas are playing at home.

” The issue of home advantage will not have any role in the encounter because the girls are well prepared for the clash. We’re Bayelsans and have never been conquered before and the Ijaw spirit is burning in the girls and that’s what they will take to the pitch.

“Although football can be funny at times and everything is possible, there’s no  cause for alarm. When you remember the last World Club  finals between Chelsea and PSG, you will  understand what I mean. Nobody gave Chelsea chance in that game but  they ended  winning 3-0 and that’s what I want our girls to do.”

He reminded the team that they have the support of everybody back home in Nigeria and that Governor Diri has already promised a handsome reward for them if they bring home the trophy, charging them to go all out for victory.

” We all know that Gov. Diri is a sports loving governor who rewards excellence and encourages sports men and women to excel. He has already said it that the team will be handsomely rewarded when they win the trophy and I know he will make the award  pronouncement once the trophy touches down in Yenagoa.

” The governor, His Excellency , Douye Diri would have loved to be in Cote d’Ivoire for the finals but other national assignments will prevent him from going but he’s sending the  Deputy Governor, Senator. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo who will lead a  high powered government delegation to the finals to show you how serious he takes sports,” Porri noted.

WAFU B Tourney: Flying Eagles in make or mar tie against  Elephants

Cup holders Nigeria know they must attain a different shape and be at their very best when they confront the Young Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire tomorrow, if they are not to exit this year’s WAFU B U20 Championship at the group stage.

The seven-time African champions fell by a lone goal to Burkina Faso’s Young Etalons on Friday and their route to the last four has been made tougher by the Etalons’ lone-goal reverse against the Elephants two days ago.

The intricacies of a three-team group have fully come to the fore, with each team having to play only two matches, and a single loss meaning that a team could be on the way out of a tournament.

With the Ivorians and the Burkinabes tied at the top of the pile, Nigeria must win by two clear goals against the Ivorians to be sure of a place in the semi-finals, and the opportunity to keep pushing to defend her crown.

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who watched the Flying Eagles lose to a second-half goal on Friday, expressed hope that the team re-invents itself and delivers the goods against the Ivorians.

He said: “I am not happy about the result. We expected a win and the three points, particularly as they are in a three-team group which can be delicate. However, I believe the coaches and the players will sit up and come up with a strategy to overcome the Ivorians.

“Nigerians are expecting so much from the team. As defending champions, it will not be good for us not to qualify for the U20 AFCON, having reached the quarter-finals at the FIFA World Cup last year.”

Tomorrow’s encounter at the Municipal Stadium, Lome will commence at 4pm Nigeria time.
