  • Ondo vows to reduce mortality rate

    Ondo State Government has vowed to reduce to the barest minimum, if not eradicate, Maternal and Child Morbidity and Mortality in the State.

    The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro spoke at a two day Stakeholders Retreat on Saving One Million Lives for Result in Akure.

    Dr Adegbenro said  health, especially maternal and child health indices  are commonly used indicators for assessment of the socio- economic development and classification of nations, hence the need for the stakeholders retreat meant to form a common front to improve these indices.

    The Health Commissioner revealed that Nigeria is the 2nd worst nation in the world after India, in terms of the rate of mortality and disability from maternal health services as one out of every thirteen women that goes into labour dies and about one million children die annually before the age of five due to deaths that can be prevented.

    He said “The Saving One Million Lives for Result, an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Health in partnership with states was put in place to reverse these unwholesome trends and improve specific maternal and child health indices in the country.

    Adegbenro hailed stakeholders in the state for their contribution to the success of the programme as the State recently won an award for achievement across the Disbursement Linked Indicators which has earned the state close to two million US Dollars ($1,972, 00).

    He enjoined stakeholders to brainstorm and chart a way forward to elicit better performance and money for the State.

    In his goodwill message, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Emmanuel Igbasan commended the State for receiving the award and promised that every dollar will be judiciously utilized.

    The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Mrs Lola Fagbemi said Local government would do everything to make health at the primary Healthcare level succeed and this they have done since the inception of this administration.

    The Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa who said the maternal and child health indices in the country is really worrisome, promised to do all within his power to turn round the tide for Ondo State while requesting that such retreat be more frequent.

    The UNICEF Chief of field, Dr Adebola Hassan, said to put Saving One million Lives for Result in line for better performance, the state should look at changing strategy by looking at doing things differently as this will accelerate action for result.

    She suggested that the State focus on areas of high burden such as Local Governments that are not performing well so that the state can achieve the desired target.

    The Zonal Director  National primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Funke Adesope opined that Ondo State could do better than it had done because it has what it takes while charging the state to improve the health indices of women and children so that it can get more money as reward , by the end of year.

    In his keynote address, The SOML National Manager, Dr Ibrahim Kano said it was discovered that one of the reasons for the poor health indices of women and children in the country is poor motivation of health workers despite much inputs, so the Saving One Million Lives for Result decided to change the usual way of doing things by rewarding Result.

    He compared Nigeria to neighboring African countries in terms of infant mortality and concluded that children in Nigeria are more at risk because they are more likely to die before the age of five as the country is lower in Health despite the fact that it is higher in Gross Domestic product (GDP).

  • ‘81,481 persons live with HIV in Ondo’

    No fewer than 81,481 persons are living with the dreadful virus called human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Ondo State, a top health official said.

    Dr Sani Aliu, the Director-General of the National Agency for Control of Aids (NACA), confirmed this on Thursday in Ondo, Ondo West Local Government Area of the state.

    Aliu said this when he paid a visit to Oba Victor Kiladejo, the Osemawe of Ondo, in order to seek the king’s support to mobilise his subjects for NACA survey in the area.

    The survey is tagged: Nigeria Aids Indicator and Impact Survey.

    The NACA DG, who was represented by Mrs Josephine Kalu, the Director of Resource Mobilisation of NACA, said that 10,000 persons out of the affected persons were on treatment.

    “Based on spectrum estimate we have, 81,481 persons that are living with HIV in Ondo State as at 2017 and out of the figure 10,000 persons are on treatment including 2,783 pregnant women.

    “Also, the estimate for new HIV infection is 5,439 persons,” he said.

    According to him, the survey is the largest HIV population based survey in Nigeria being supported by the U.S. and Global Funds.
    He added that the survey was important for proper planning and development of strategies that would lead to eradication of HIV and hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

    “The focus of the survey is able to gather data that will help to fight current level of HIV and hepatitis B and hepatitis C as we are looking at 2030 for a HIV-free generation.

    “We cannot but have data that can be effectively used to fight these,” he said.

    Aliu, therefore, enjoined more domestic resources to curb HIV.

    Oba Kiladejo commended efforts of the agency and urged it to do more on counselling and to focus more in the vulnerable areas.
    The monarch, who expressed worry with the high number of persons living with HIV, asked for more funds to fight it.

    The NACA team had earlier paid a visit to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro.

    Adegbenro thanked the agency for its continued support, saying the survey would no doubt address problems of public health.
    The commissioner promised that the state government would give its support for the success of the survey.

  • Ondo nursing School upgraded

    Health workers under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, (NANNM) in Ondo State are excited over the upgrade of the School of Nursing and Midwifery in the state.

    They praised the State government for its decision to elevate the School into degree awarding institution in line with global standard.

    The State Executive Council(SEC) led by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu  had during the week after its meeting approved  the absorption of the Nursing School by the University of Medical Science, Ondo (UNIMED) into a degree awarding institution.

    The State Chairman of the NANNM, Abel Opeyemi-Oloniyo said the decision of the government would boost the working capacity of nurses and midwives in the state.

    Oloniyo explained that the state government would become first state in Nigeria to carry out upgrading of its School of Nursing.

    Besides, he described as timely a proposed law aimed at upgrading the School of Health Technology in Akure to a College of Health Technology in line with global standard.

    He said, “The upgrading of our school of Nursing is a welcome development, we were carried along from day one that government plans to ensure higher status for the school. Schools of Nursing across Nigeria have been given few years, to upgrade their status, we are happy Ondo state is taking a lead in this area, we are going to be the first state in the country to do this”.

    On the recent security breach by patients of the state Psychiatric Hospital, Akure, the NANNM Chairman reiterated his call on the state government to improve security of health workers and patients for adequate service delivery.

    The state Commissioner for health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro said the state government was working hard to improve welfare of nurses and other medical workers especially in the areas of capacity building and security at hospitals.

    Head of Service(HoS) in the state,Toyin Akinkuotu charged nurses to be more proactive in implementing various state government’s policies in the health sector particularly the introduction of free health care service for pregnant women and children below five year old.

    ‘800,000 die of measles annually’ – UNICEF

    Ondo state government in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund(UNICEF) have concluded plans to immunise over 700,000 children between nine months and five years.

    The first phase of the exercise will come up between March 8 and 13 in  10 local government areas of the state.

    Children in the other eight local government areas would have their own immunisation between March 15 and 20 as second phase.

    Speaking at the media sensitisation meeting for measles vaccination campaign held in Akure,the state capital,the Secretary, Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Board(OSPHCDB) Dr Francis Akanbiemu said government had released N30m for the exercise.

    Akanbiemu who described measles as one of the deadly diseases, USAID over 800,000 children were being killed annually across the world by the disease.

    He however said it is a Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD).

    The state commissioner for Health,Dr Wahab Adegbenro said”we need to sensitise our people on how to combat the disease,we are just getting over the lassa fever,which claimed some lives in the state,we are doing our best to confront measles.

    Adegbenro said the state government had reactivated a burial law through which government must be notified on all burials in the state to enable medical experts identify the cause of the death to prevent spread of such virus.

    He said the burial law had been in existence but passive,adding that the state government had reactivated it with mandate to security agencies to prosecute its violators.

    Commissioner for Information and Orientation,Yemi Olowolabi expressed the need for sensitisation of mothers and the public on the campaign.

    He urged the media to give free jingles and write-up to the organisers of the immunisation as part of their social responsibility.

    The commissioner said everything must be done to prevent the re-occurence of last November scare,which forced many parents to hurriedly withdraw their wards from schools as a result of rumours on fake vaccination alleged to be applied on pupils by some soldiers.

    Many medical experts especially on Public Health including UNICEF Consultant,Haizatu Zango spoke on how to prevent measles.

    Ondo Govt. distributes 362 ICT tablets

     

    Ondo State Government on Tuesday began the distribution of 362 data management tools known as clinipak tablets to health workers to enhance primary healthcare delivery across 18 local government areas of the state.

    The distribution was inaugurated by Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, who was represented by Dr Wahab Adegbenro, the state Commissioner for Health in Akure on Tuesday.

    He said that the state government decided to embark on the project to enhance effective management of health information data, which was key to the delivery of qualitative healthcare.

    According to him, health workers had earlier been trained on the use of the ICT tools.

    He added that the state procured the tablets while the technical partner, Instar Global Health Solution, designed and installed the Clinipak application.

    The governor said that the tools had been tested and proven to be the ideal solution for data management.

    Akeredolu commended the state health workers for working tirelessly to put the state at the forefront in healthcare delivery.

    He urged them to hit the ground running as the tablets were meant to improve both their efficiency and effectiveness.

    In his remark, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on ICT, Mr Olumbe Akinkugbe, applauded the state Primary Healthcare Development Board for the initiative, which he said would enhance healthcare delivery.

    Akinkugbe expressed delight that the state was moving in the right direction using modern ICT tools in the management of health information data.

    Similarly, Mr Abiola Oshunniyi, Director, Business Development International, said that with the Clinipak application, health facilities in the state would move from just collecting and reporting patients data to leveraging on mobile solutions for improved decision from facility level to the policy making level.

    Oshunniyi added that the application was currently being used in some states in Nigeria, but that of Ondo State was the largest deployment.

    Ondo promises to expand Akure Specialist Hospital

    Ondo Government has promised to expand the State Specialist Hospital, Akure to meet the peoples’ medical attention, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, the Commissioner for Health, said on Wednesday.

    He made this known in Akure, the capital of Ondo State after inspecting the hospital.

    Adegbenro said that the hospital had been congested due to increasing population and economic hardship driving people away from private hospitals to government-owned ones.

    He noted that there would be total overhaul of the health facility so as to render quality healthcare to the people.

    He said “there is need to expand this hospital; there are many things to be replaced because some of infrastructure are old.”

    The commissioner urged the hospital Chief Medical Director (CMD) and staff to adjust to present financial challenges, promising that the government would intervene.

    Dr Jibayo Adeyeye, the Special Adviser to the governor on health, commended staff of the hospital for maintaining the facilities in spite of financial challenges.

    He said the state government was aware of the hospital’s challenges and would attend to it soon.

    Earlier, the CMD of the hospital, Dr Moses Adewole, said the hospital needed to be given optimal and utmost focus because most people in the state sought medical attention there.

    Adewole added that the hospital was the eye of the state government, hence the need to give it priority attention.

    The commissioner and his entourage also visited the Mother and Child Hospital, Akure.
