Jonathan has himself to blame for 2015 defeat, says Waku

Northern leaders yesterday reacted to allegations of betrayal against them by former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying he failed to do his home work ahead of the election.

Former Vice Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Senator Joseph Waku told The Nation on phone that the former President did not do his research before trusting  those he now accuses of betraying him, adding that “authentic northern leaders” made it clear from the beginning that they were not going to vote for him.

Waku, a chief of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Benue State who initially declined to comment on the allegation because “I am not one of those he is talking about” said: “why should I comment on his allegation? He knows ab initio that I was not for him and so could not have said I betrayed him.

“He knows the northern leaders that he liaised with that betrayed him. I was not involved in that. So next time, when any southern president or any northerner or Nigerian president wants to meet with northern leaders, they should do their research and know the people to deal with that will not betray them.

“It is not every northern leader that supported him. Some of us took our stand ab initio that we were not with him. But those he trusted betrayed him.

“He did not do his home work thoroughly and so got into the wrong hands because we, the authentic northern elders and leaders, had already made up our mind that we were not going to give him any vote and we stuck to it. Those he trusted were Nobody and so he should have himself to blame.”

Spokesman for the Northern Delegates to the 2014 National Conference, Mr. Anthony Sani said the former President failed to understand that the body language of the north in the run up to the elections was that they needed a change of leadership because of the impression that he was not willing to crush the Boko Haram uprising.

Sani who is the immediate past National Publicity Secretary of ACF said that the uncomplimentary remarks by handlers of Jonathan’s public outing also did not help matters as their comments added to an already bad situation.

He said: “the former president did not seem to take the pulse of the politics at that time serious. Otherwise  he would have known that in the North at that time, the generality of the populace felt the government was dragging its feet on the fight against Boko Haram which was becoming ubiquitous in the Northern states and making the whole North unsafe even among farmers, thereby inspiring fear among the populace.

“What is more, the delay by the then president to order an immediate chase of the abductors of Chibok girls until after some 72 hours exacerbated the apprehension in the North that the government was not determined to bring Boko Haram under control. And therefore there was need for change.

“Also, you would note that the movements of the economic indices of the GDP, the foreign reserve, the Excess Crude account, the value of the naira to the dollar from May 2010 when the regime took over to 2015 tended to signal a down turn of the economy. This engendered fear among the people of the impending economic Armageddon which needed a change in leadership that could stop it.”

He added that it was the same north that made it possible for Jonathan to defeat the same Buhari in 2011.

  • Benue political crisis: Waku, Jime reconcile with Ortom

    … after Buhari’s intervention

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, yesterday announced the reconciliation of Senator Joseph Waku and Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Jime with Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

He also stated that Waku and Jime had withdrawn their suit challenging the candidacy of Ortom in the last governorship election.

Addressing journalists at the conference hall of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat in Abuja, Dogara said the development followed the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Speaker said the President took the initiative with the objective of healing wounds within the ranks of the party and positioning it to deliver quality service to the people of Benue State.

According to him President Buhari lamented the hardship inflicted on Benue people by the last administration and reiterated the need for the APC government to redress the situation as soon as possible.

He commended the Governor for starting on a sound footing by paying workers’ salaries.

The Speaker directed that the parties involved should embrace one another to demonstrate that they had reconciled, and they did.

In his response, Governor Ortom commended the President for his intervention.

He also commended both Senator Waku and Rt. Hon. Jime for their spirits of sportsmanship and the sacrifice they had made in the interest of the party.

He noted the contributions of his colleagues from Sokoto, Plateau, Imo and Nasarawa states, and the personal presence of three of them. He also thanked the national officials of the party.

Ortom said with the reconciliation, he would perform better in securing the state and providing good governance and leadership.

Senators George Akume and Barnabas Gemade; state party chairman, Comrade Abba Yaro; Justice Augustine Utsaha rtd; Dr Fidelis Anweh; Titus Madugu; Hon Avine Agbom and Mike Gbe were among the politicians from Benue State who witnessed the event.

  • Tinubu Media Office blasts Waku

    Tinubu Media Office blasts Waku

The Tinubu Media Office (TMO) yesterday branded as a tale by the moonlight, the allegation by Benue politician, Chief Lawrence Waku that All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu instigated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s invitation to the wife of Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki.

Waku, in a statement in Abuja, had claimed that Tinubu was exploring his personal relationship with the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde to embarrass, and torment fellow party members including Mrs. Saraki, who has an appointment with the anti-graft agency on Tuesday.

But reacting to the insinuation yesterday, TMO said “no one should pay former Senator Waku any attention. What he has said is fit for the trash.  Waku is Godwin Daboh resurrected. No one should dignify Waku’s tales by moonlight with any attention or ever take him serious.

The statement by Tinubu’s Media Adviser, Sunday Dare, added, “For any serious individual with a reputation to protect, Waku is a very poor hire. Tinubu does not run or dictate to the EFCC. And like countless others Tinubu has also being investigated by the EFCC severely in the past.

“Tinubu has no hand in the travails of any one because  he is right now very  busy working with others of like mind on how the APC political agenda can set sail as quickly as possible. That is the urgency of now and not the tantrums of the likes of Waku.”

APC suspends Waku, Jime others for anti-party activities

Benue State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has suspended Senator Joseph Waku, Emmanuel Jime and Justice Ustaha for anti-party activities.

The Chairman, Comrade Abba Yaro, in a statement made available to The Nation after a meeting of the working committee, said the members disobeyed the party’s order to withdraw their cases from courts.

Jime was an APC governorship aspirant and is in court to challenge the emergence of Governor Samuel Ortom.

Waku is also challenging Ortom’s emergence in the last primaries at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Yaro said at the end of this month, their suspension would be reviewed and if the directives were not complied with, the party would have no choice but to expel them.

  • Jime, Waku to withdraw suit against Ortom

Jime, Waku to withdraw suit against Ortom

THOSE involved in the crisis trailing the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State have embraced peace.

This followed an application for an out-of- court settlement in the suit challenging the emergence of the former Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom (now the governor- elect), as the party’s candidate.

The plaintiffs, otherwise called the G4, comprising Senator Joseph Waku, Prof. Steve Ugbah, Emmanuel Jime and Chief Mike Iordye joined Comrade Abba Yaro, Dr. George Akume (Senate Minority Leader/party leader), the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.

During proceedings, one of the plaintiffs, Chief Iordye, opted out.

He alleged that his signature was forged and his name was struck out.

When the case came up yesterday, counsel to the plaintiffs, Mr. Sunday Ameh (SAN), told the court that his clients were pursuing an out-of-court settlement and needed time to concretise the peaceful process.

At the last adjourned date, counsel to Ortom, Mr. Sabastine Hon prayed the court to stay proceedings due to a pending appeal at the Court of Appeal.

Moving his application, Hon, who relied on relevant legal authorities, told Justice Evoh Chukwu that once a court becomes aware that an appeal is before the Court of Appeal, the court has no other duty than to stay proceedings on the subject or adjourn sine dine to await the outcome of the appeal.

The case was adjourned till April 30.

  • Waku: Nigerians ‘ll not re-elect Jonathan

Waku: Nigerians ‘ll not re-elect Jonathan

Senator Joseph Waku is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State. He is also a leader of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF). In this interview with TONY AKOWE in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), he speaks on  the controversy sorrounding the party’s governorship primaries in Benue, the North’s quest for power-shift and the chances of the APC at the polls.

What is your assessment of the campaigns by the President and his challenger, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari?

I spent about one hour listening to my President soliciting for votes from Nigerians. All I could deduce is that the man is out of ideas, out of touch and he will soon be out of power. I found a frustrating President, rather than a confident man. I saw a lot of frustration in him. I saw how visibly angry he was with himself. Above all, I discovered that he himself is a thug rather than saying Obasanjo looks like one, behaves or acts like a thug. He did not speak the way a President should speak. As a normal human being, you will realise that even our tradition does not allow you to talk about a father in the manner he did. No matter how angry you are against Obasanjo, you cannot call him a thug because he fought to keep this country united before becoming President. He risked his life at the war front to liberate Jonathan. Otherwise, he would have been enslaved by the Igbos. If not for the civil war, which Obasanjo fought to keep Nigeria together, he would been enslaved and his identity would have been totally lost. For you to get up and address that man in such a way is uncivilized. No wonder that Nigeria need a President who is civilized, cultured, learned and has tradition to respect. I believe that he should slow down, convince Nigerians about what he need to do, rather than abuse leaders that have made this country survive for you to come and benefit from.

Dr. Jonathan said that Buhari, who did not buy any weapon for the military, is not talking about tackling insurgency. What is your reaction?

That is to show you clearly that the man is not intelligent. Buhari spent 18 months in office and Jonathan has spent six years. What Buhari achieved, even as a GOC, Jonathan has not achieved as the President. When Chad invaded Nigerian territory during the Shagari administration, Buhari moved in and recaptured the villages and even went ahead to seize some Cameroonian villages. He just not informed. As President, you don’t rule the country by emotions. You rule with fact and articulate position. Do you compare somebody who rule for 18 months with that who rule for six years? Even the budget preparation, how long does it take? Even Buhari had bought weapons for the military then, how useful would they have been now when he was in power over 30 years ago? What has he done with the new innovations in place now. If Buhari had bought vehicles for the military 30 years ago, would they have been useful in the current dispensation? So, you can clearly see Nigeria’s misfortune, by bringing somebody who has no idea of governance into a training school. Nigeria is no longer about training people to rule. We have gotten to the position where we need people with lots of experience, especially in a situation like this when the nation is about collapsing under a novice.

The insurgency seems to have defiled solutions. What is the best way to handle it?

If you remember, some years ago when the insurgency started, I said that Jonathan was benefiting from it. In fact, I went further to say that he created this insurgency. He told Nigerians that he knows those who are sponsoring Boko Haram and went further to say the areas where they exist. He said they were in his government, in the legislature and in the judiciary, as well as the police. We expected him to arrest them. A commander-in-chief and chief security officer of the federation telling you that he know those involved in the insurgency; what stopped him from arresting them? I think he is benefiting from it. As I keep saying, he knows that he is losing this election very fast and so, he created this insurgency to cut away part of the country, so that the voting population there might be reduced. But, what he does not know is that the people are determined to vote where ever they are.

Why is the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), which has been agitating for power shift, is divided over the candidature of Buhari?

There is no division in the ACF regarding who becomes the candidate of any political party, not even Buhari. We are non-partisan and so, our job is like that of an umpire. We moderate and for all our children who wants to get into politics, we advise them not to get into crisis. So, we are non partisan. I am sure you are referring to a dissident group called Northern Elders Council headed by an outdated northerner who has never in his life won an election, even as a councillor, Tanko Yakassai. I am sure that he is the person you are referring to. Otherwise, the north is united about who become President of this country, particularly a northerner. They always believe that based on the PDP zoning system, a northerner should be a candidate. The APC, which does not subscribe  to zoning, has decided on a credible Nigerian, who happens to be a northerner. There is no division in the north. There is division and hatred for those who are either criminally-minded and are afraid of going back to jail or who intends to take to crime. These are the people against Buhari in the north and in Nigeria generally. No Nigerian who wants this country to progress is against Buhari. It is only people whose hands are not clean that are afraid. But, we keep telling them that Buhari will not run a vengeance government. He will not witch-hunt anybody. We are all Nigerians and together, we shall build a united Nigeria. But, that is not to say that law and order will not be allowed to take its course. Some of those who mismanaged the responsibility may be called to question. It may not even be Buhari. Assuming that I am the governor of Benue State today and I decided to look into the multitude of loans that has been accumulated over the years and how they will benefit the people of Benue, would you say I am witch-hunting? Of course not, because I just want to articulate the position and prioritize some areas of governance to move forward. That is bound to happen in any organisation for there to be sanity.

How can violence be averted at the general elections?

You can clearly see evidence of violence in the PDP and its presidential candidate. Look at the way he spoke as if he were a garage boy who is ready to release the hunting dogs. On his part, Buhari tells you exactly what he wants to do. But, Jonathan is short of mentioning the names of those he wants to attack for fears of the electoral laws. He really has nothing to offer. They are banking on the security.  How can the Directorate of State Security become the mouthpiece of a political party, like Merilyn Oga has been doing and she has not been checked or called to order by the authorities. This is most unfortunate. What is the duty of the PDP publicity secretary? If you say my party is inflating membership, what has that got to do with INEC or the electoral processes. It is not every party member that has voting card and so, what has that got to do with hacking into INEC website? You can see the provocation and yet, the government is not saying anything. So, we are not preparing ourselves for violence and we will not. We know the consequences of violence because it can lead to loss of life. When we form government, are we going to preside over corpses? We want to provide services to Nigerians. Therefore, we are not interested in violence and we cannot encourage violence from any quarters.

There are those who believe that INEC will not be able to deliver a free, fair and credible election and those who hold this view have consistently pointed at the distribution of the Permanent Voters Cards…

Look at what the President said, that he has ordered INEC that is supposed to be an independent body. The President could not even tell that the nation that he has advised INEC, but that he has ordered. What that means is that he was holding them before for reasons best known to government. Why do you now want to order them when we have less than 40 days to elections. At the same time, INEC came out to say that whoever has his name on the register will be allowed to vote. But if such people are not allowed to vote, that is where problem will arise because we will not support any Nigerian being disenfranchised. Here again, the President has gifted. The last election was held in 2011 and four years is enough time for INEC to have concluded all these things. It is only now that he is saying that he has ordered INEC, an independent body. He is only telling Nigerians that he with held this before and maybe now, he has seen that it will not be in his advantage or he has worked out the mechanism to make it work in his favour. We are too intelligent in this country and we are monitoring the activities of everybody, no matter how highly placed.

What actually happened during the APC governorship primaries in Benue?

You heard correctly that there was no primary to elect or select  a governorship candidate.  Samuel Ortom’s name was forwarded. I thought that was April fool.

Don’t you think that this will affect the chances of the party in the state?

That is what we are trying to avert, otherwise, we will have no candidate from the point of view of the law.

•Seeks resolution to Benue governorship crisis

A chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and Benue State All Progressives Congress (APC) former governorship aspirant, Senator Joseph Waku, has said the North is not divided over the party’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of the February 14 election.

Waku was a senator between 1999 and 2003.

He urged APC national leadership to address the crisis in the state chapter, following the governorship primary, to avoid losing some elections in the state.

Waku said those against the emergence of Gen. Buhari had criminal records or intended to carry out some criminal activities.

The senator noted that Gen. Buhari’s Presidency would not be interested in witch-hunting people.

He said: “There is no single division in the ACF regarding who becomes the candidate of any political party, not even Gen. Buhari. We are non-partisan. So, our job is like that of an umpire – we moderate. For all our children who want to get into politics, we advise them not to get into crisis. So, we are non-partisan.

“There is division and hatred for those who are either criminals and are afraid of going back to jail, or those who intend to be criminals. These are the people against gen. Bihari in the North and in Nigeria. No Nigerian, who wants this country to progress, is against Gen. Buhari.

“There are quite few people whose records are not yet strengthened who are afraid. But we keep telling them that Gen. Buhari will not run a vengeance government. He will not witch-hunt anybody. We are all Nigerians and, together, we shall build a united Nigeria.

“But that is not to say that law and order will not be allowed to take its course. Some of those who mismanage their responsibilities may be called to question. It may not even be Gen. Buhari…”

Waku: Jonathan has made him a hero

Former National Vice Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Senator JKN Waku, yesterday said the decision of President Goodluck Jonathan to suspend Mallam Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of Central Bank has only made a hero of the CBN governor.

Speaking to The Nation, the APC chieftain described Jonathan’s action as “illegal and unintelligent.”

He said: “The President’s action is a breach of the constitution.

“Under what Act, under what law has he suspended or sacked the CBN governor? The President has no such powers.

“The CBN Act says the President can only do that if he has the support of two-thirds majority of the Senate.

“Was Sanusi found guilty of stealing public money? Why was he removed for exposing corrupt practices instead of removing those involved or trying to cover it?

“Some crude oil monies were supposed to be remitted to the Federal Government. They were remitted N20 billion less. Sanusi exposed the matter, now he has been removed by the President for his penchant for transparency.”

Waku added: “Sanusi rang a bell, instead of listening to the bell; the president removed the bell and the ringer of the bell so that nobody can now listen to any sound.

“If you hate Sanusi, he is only a messenger, take his message and leave him alone.

With what the President has done, it means more oil revenues will continue to miss.”

  • Ayu not ACN member, says Waku

•‘Don’t drag party’s name into his politics’

Senator Joseph Waku has denied a report which said former Senate President in the aborted Third Republic, Dr Iyorhcia Ayu, is a member of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The report had said Ayu was planning to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a telephone chat with The Nation from Abuja, Waku said Ayu had never been a member of ACN, adding that he could not defect from a party he did not belong to.

He said: “To the best of my knowledge, Dr Ayu has been a dormant PDP member. Let him just say he is now looking for relevance and they (his supporters) are organising a reception for him to be readmitted into the party and gain more popularity.”

Waku said Ayu had been a member of the PDP, adding that if he wants to reunite with the party, he should not drag ACN’s name into it.
