NYSC scheme second unifying factor to military—Wamakko

SOKOTO state Governor Aliyu Wamakko on Thursday said the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC) is the second most unifying factor to the nation after the military.

He said the scheme has remained relevant in the scheme of things of Nigeria since its inception over forty years ago.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governor made the remark at a farewell party organized by the state government for the outgoing batch, ” C” 2013 corps members posted to the state. Wamakko who was represented by the chairman of the NYSC governing board in the state, Alhaji Halliru Tambuwal observed that there was no other programme or scheme in this country that unites the nation than the military first, then NYSC.

According to him, the NYSC scheme has helped greatly in keeping Nigeria together, with vibrant and patriotic youths traversing the length and breadth of the country and contributing meaningfully to national development “The corps members have been contributing to the socioeconomic development of the state, especially the health and education sectors”, he pointed out. The governor who recently got appointed into the 60 member council of the Muslim World League by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia further pledged to continue to support the scheme to ensure the success of the activities of the scheme at all levels.a

  • As Wamakko becomes politicians’ politician

    As Wamakko becomes politicians’ politician

Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State very well fits in as a grass root politician even before joining any known political party.  Years back, while as a Teacher, Local Government Administrator, a Civil Servant and a Permanent Secretary, Wamakko was all through the years involved in everything and anything good for the people.

If politics is about mobilizing people, organizing people, working for the good of the people and improving the living standard of the people, then it is incontrovertible that Aliyu Wamakko, the Sarkin Yamman Sokoto, practices politics in its true design.

Looking at the array of Awards of Merit conferred on Wamakko by various associations, organizations and corporate bodies since his foray into public life, it is enough to classify him as an individual who has paid his dues in the sphere of being a friend to all. It was natural that the then All Peoples Party (APP) found him worthy of serving as its 1999 Gubernatorial running mate against the backdrop of his rich proximity to the people at the grass roots. As a humble gentleman, Wamakko was able to construct a formidable bridge of acceptance between himself and the people all over the State.

Party politics is about carrying the people along, and Wamakko does this with great humility, as people want to be accorded due recognition and respect.  His personal residence at Gawon Nama area in Sokoto metropolis is a Mecca of some sort, people troop their daily to interface with him for one favour or another; and he obliges all manner of visitors without grudges.

His accessibility to all has earned him the respect and admiration of the commoners who see his residence as their own, as they have unfettered access to him anytime.

It would be recalled that, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State facing rejection at the polls in 2006 had to draft him as its Gubernatorial flag bearer as its last hope. He led the party to victory in the election. That particular event was an eloquent testimony of Wamakko’s political worth and relevance in Sokoto State.  He revived the PDP, nurtured it and made it vibrant through his unrivalled political sagacity.

All over Nigeria, the then Sokoto PDP under Wamakko’s  leadership was the only chapter with 100% success story in all elections from the Local Government Councils to the National Assembly.

As a further confirmation of his political dexterity, Wamakko very well balanced himself between execution of people-centered projects and empowering the people economically and socially.

The popular slogan in Sokoto politics, ‘SAI ALU’ is not just a slogan but a slogan with a difference.  It surfaced in 2006 when Wamakko contested against then Governor Bafarawa’s Democratic Peoples Party (DPP).  Despite the incumbency factor and the intimidating machinery of government at DPP’s disposal, Wamakko’s political worth came to bear heavily as the then PDP roundly trounced the DPP.  The ‘SAI ALU’ slogan is still very much alive in Sokoto politics.

The numerous court cases that trailed Wamakko’s defeat of the DPP, the annulment of his election and the fresh election which he won fair and square all testified to his political relevance and worth in Sokoto State and how dear he is to the people.

His leaving the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not self-serving as he and some Governors became alarmed with the trend of events in the PDP which proved unfavorable to the fortunes of the party.  They left the party as there was no mechanism for making necessary amends.

His defection to the APC with all the 23 Local Government Chairmen, State Assembly Members, all Commissioners and all special Advisers was another proof that Wamakko’s political calculation is very sound.  Before joining the APC, the party in Sokoto  had virtually no suitable office accommodation anywhere in the State; but today the APC is everywhere in all the wards in Sokoto State.

As a mark of his political acumen the national body of the APC mandated Wamakko to steer its maiden National Convention exercise.  Perhaps, the national body of the party reckoned with the success recorded by the Sokoto APC in conducting its various congresses from the Wards to the State level.  The Sokoto APC congresses were held successfully without rancour, unlike in some states where the congresses where mired in controversies, but later settled.

The APC at the national level wanted a taste of the Wamakko spirit at the convention, hence the choice of the Sokoto State governor to lead the exercise which turned out to be another success story for the party.

Again, the APC conceded the inauguration of the North West Zone executive council of the party to Sokoto State as a mark of honour and trust to Governor Wamakko.  The Inauguration was a huge success as all the seven states within the zone were massively represented.  That singular feat has gone extra miles to illustrate Wamakko’s mobilization and organizational abilities.

Today one is safe to posit that, APC is on its way to forming the next government in Sokoto State come 2015, because all the requisite signs are there with the undying Sokoto SAI ALU slogan still renting the air.  The bottom line is, Governor Wamakko has not betrayed his people, so the people are solidly behind him, he understands what democracy is by carrying everybody along.

Now that the leadership Newspaper had found Governor Wamakko worthy of its prestigious award as its politician of the year, it is another loud testimony of his ever – rising profile as a politician worth his salt, a politician who knows his onions, a politician who knows politics inside out and a politicians’ politician.

It is normal to bestow honour on whom it is due, recognizing Governor Wamakko as an indefatigable politician is appropriate as this will further spur him to greater feats politically as we approach 2015. And this can only be good for both his party, the APC and Nigeria as a country. So as he takes his bow for this great honour it is our hope that other Nigerian politicians, especially those in public service will learn a thing or two from Wamakko’s life of service to humanity.

Three PDP governors to join APC, says Wamakko

Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko yesterday said that three governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to join the All Progressive Congress (APC) next month.

Two of the governors to join the opposition are from the North. The other one is from the South, he said.

Wamakko was in Kaduna last night for  the APC Northwest caucus meeting to strategise ahead of a zonal rally slated for  Sokoto next month.

Wamakko said: “We met here to first and foremost put a functional zonal office and other offices to fill the gap and to hold zonal rallies to kick start our party’s victory stride by 2015.

“As I am talking to you now, three PDP governors are set to join the APC between now and the end of September. Two of the governors are from the North while the third one is from the South.”

When asked to comment on allegations that he has an anointed candidate to take over from him, the governor said: “Only God makes leaders, I cannot tell you who will succeed me in Sokoto State.”

On the defection of former Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) boss, Nuhu Ribadu from the APC to the PDP, he declined comments because he (Ribadu) is a man of his own who can take decisions for himself.

Wamakko left to attend another assignment at another venue. Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Zamfara State Senator Ahmed Sani and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Bello Masari, among other APC chieftains from the Northwest zone were still meeting .

Amaechi, Wamakko to Nigerians: Vote against bad governance, poverty

Governors Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers and Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto States have called on Nigerians to vote wisely if they want to bid goodbye to poverty, insecurity and bad governance that have characterized development in the country in the last four years.

The duo spoke separately in Rimawa town, Sokoto, Thursday at the inauguration of a modern agricultural skills acquisition centre constructed by Wamakko’s administration.

Wamakko said Nigerians should not only be yearning for change but actualise their commitment through votes.

The governors described current government at the top as weak, inefficient and has failed to deliver in all respects.

According to them, the All Progressives Congress is ready to change the direction of Nigeria and Nigerians to a secure and better nation in the interest of the citizens.

Ameachi said there was need for a total departure from where Nigerians are now, adding that “the only treatment that can cure Nigerians of the Peoples Democratic Party is APC.

“If you remember your childhood days when you have headache, doctors prescribe APC for you and you don’t need any alternative today than APC to bring back the country to life,” he said.

He described Wamakko as a governor who dispassionately works with honesty and detests corruption to a fault.

Wamakko said APC as a party was built and focused for a better Nigeria” myself and Ameachi are like mind with similar ideas aimed at promoting and projecting the party in good light.

“APC is about Nigeria and not ourselves in the interest of transparency, accountability, good governance, food, lives and property security of Nigerians and affordable housing for all,” he stressed.

    Wamakko appoints Commissioners, Special Advisers

Two new Commissioners, Alhaji Tukur Alkali and Alhaji Ibrahim. Hussaini were Monday sworn in by Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto state.

Also sworn in at the Government House council chambers were two Special Advisers, Alhaji Harande Mahe and Alhaji Musa Gudu.

Speaking at the brief ceremony, Governor Aliyu Wamakko said the developments were necessitated by the need and exigency of public service and electorates mandate to the state leadership for the discharge of its responsibilities as enshrined in the constitution.

However, the appointees were yet to get defined potfolios.

According to the governor” the state executive council is the apex policy formulation body, which in collaboration with other arms of government, pilot the overall administration of our dear state,” he pointed out while adding that “those with the privilege of serving the
state in highly esteemed capacity are both individually and collectively responsible to the government and the people of the state.

The governor maintained that ” such privileged honour carries with it a great burden , which requires vision, courage, considerable sacrifices and above all, the fear of Allah.

He further stressed the need for the appointees to imbibe the spirit of the fear of God, saying that” the fear  of God is invariably the key to success in every human endeavour,” Wamakko said.

Wamakko hitherto, described the new appointees as men of integrity, dedication and commitment to the socio-political  development   of the state.

His words: ” our political adventure is constantly being championed in the interest of our people not by our selfish motives”.

APC committed to building a strong, united party – Atiku

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, said on Monday in Sokoto that the All Progressive Congress leadership was committed to building a strong and united party.

Abubakar made the declaration when he paid a courtesy call on Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State.

“All of us are now willing to set aside our individual ambitions so as to build a formidable APC.”

“So, for now, we are not talking about how to pursuing our selfish political aspirations. We are collectively working to ensure the growth of the APC,’’ he said.

Abubakar said he defected to the APC after nationwide consultations with his political associates.

According to him, “over 80 per cent of my political supporters are in support of my defection to the APC,” he added.

The former vice president said that Nigeria was in dire need for change, and commended the people of Sokoto State for rallying behind him always.

Abubakar recalled that he got the highest number of votes from the state delegates during the 2011 PDP presidential primaries.

Responding, Wamakko said that the APC’s struggle was aimed at salvaging the North and Nigeria in general.

The governor urged leaders of the party to put Nigeria first and not their individual ambitions.

“I am appealing to you not to repeat the costly blunders of 2011 in order to achieve our vision and mission of salvaging Nigeria,’’ he added.

Wamakko said that such patriotism and political sagacity were required to build a stronger APC that would emerge victorious in 2015.

The governor said that Nigerians needed a united country where the citizens are equal stakeholders.

“Good governance cannot thrive where there is no social justice and respect for the rule of law.

“Nobody should be seen to be above the law, and corruption must be squarely tackled without minding whose ox is gored,’’ he said.

Wamakko said that God did not make a mistake by creating Nigerians with diverse religious and ethnic differences.

Defecting governors: Court orders fresh service of processes

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered fresh service of court processes on five ex-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The processes are in respect of the case filed by the PDP, seeking to sack the governors on the ground of their defection to the opposition party.
The governors are – Alhaji Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara).
Justice Gabriel Kolawole gave the order on Monday upon complaint by plaintiff’s lawyer, Alex Iziyon (SAN) to the effect that despite being served, the defendants were not only absent in court, they have also failed to file any response to the processes served on them.
The judge ordered that the governors be served through the national office of the APC in Abuja.
Justice Kolawole also granted the plaintiff permission to publish the court processes in two specified newspapers. He adjourned to February 6 for hearing of the plaintiff’s originating summons.
Sued with the governors is the Independent National Electoral Commission (listed as the 1st defendant).
The PDP argued that the governors should be sacked from office on the ground that, upon their defection, they have forfeited their offices, which, as a result, have reverted to the party.
In the event that the five governors are sacked from office, PDP wants the court to order the deputy governors or speakers of the states’ Houses of Assembly of the affected states, or any officer next in rank, who is still its member, to assume the office of governor.

    Wamakko inaugurates secretariat

It appears that the “division” among members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State has ended, with supporters of former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa storming the opening of the party’s office.

At the event were former Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) governorship candidate Muhammadu Dingyadi, former Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) governorship candidate Abubakar Yabo, Amb. Abubakar Shehu Wurno and former Speaker of the House of Assembly Lawali Margai.

Former Deputy Governor Chiso Dattijo assisted Governor Aliyu Wamakko to cut the tape at the brief ceremony.

The governor said all party members had agreed to unite for a common front.

“I am convinced that this is an opportunity that has signaled the beginning of our unity for the benefit of our dear state and the country.

“As you can see, everybody who matters in the state is here. So the meeting is fruitful, cordial and result oriented and whatever we have discussed is for the benefit of our dear state and country,” he said.

Dingyadi said he was optimistic that all the warring factions would merge into a strong and formidable APC.

“The problems in the local chapter can happen in any party but I assure you with time and due consultation we are going to have one formidable party in the state.”

Wurno assured of their loyalty to Wamakko’s leadership in the party.

He said there was no reason for them to separate themselves from the political realities.

“We cannot isolate our selves from this journey of hope for change.

“We are ready to salvage the nation’s democracy by joining forces that can lead to the emancipation of our people.

“Our presence is to demonstrate our support for Wamakko and bury our differences.”

    PDP seeks defecting governors’ impeachment

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced move aimed at unseating five of its former governors, who recently decamped to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

It has approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking among others, an order directing the Houses of Assembly in the governors’ states to commence impeachment process against them.

The affected governors are – Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Alhaji Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara).

Joined in the suit along with the five governors is the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The party cited Sections 177 (c), 221 and 222 (c) of the Constitution as the basis for which the court could declare the governors ineligible to remain in office as governor having defected to APC.

The PDP presented five questions for the court’s determination and prayed for six reliefs.
