  • Asari Dokubo’s groups warn Boko Haram

The leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Front (NDPSF), Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has warned Boko Haram insurgents to desist from opposing President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term bid.

He spoke yesterday at a news briefing in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

The groups urged politicians in the North not to use Boko Haram and other acts of terrorism to distract and frustrate the Jonathan administration.

They absolved Asari-Dokubo of complicity in the Kaduna bomb blast and told Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) to stop linking their leader to the incident.

The Akwa Ibom Zonal Leader of the NDPVF and NDPSF, Mr. Jones Ufot, said freedom fighters in the Niger Delta would support and defend the political and economic interest of the area, which, according to him, had been threatened by the North.

He enjoined northerners to reciprocate the support the Niger Delta gave their presidential candidates by backing President Jonathan for a second term.

His words: “We assure our brother, Mr. President, of our readiness to defend our own. We are speaking the minds of our brothers and sisters in Akwa Ibom and our compatriot in the Niger Delta, who voted for him and are eager to do so again.”

  • Kogi Utd warn Dolphins FC: Underrate us at your peril

Kogi United’s Technical Adviser, Abdullahi Abidemi Biffo, says his side will give everything to seal victory in today’s Federation Cup Round of 32 clash against Dolphins FC of Port-Harcourt at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

The former Giwa FC handler admits that the match is a big test for his team but insists that his boys are not afraid of the former champions.

In a chat with SportingLife Biffo says he and his wards know the importance of the game and are ready to go as far as possible in the tournament.

“It is going to be a big test for our team. Dolphins were former FA Cup champions and they have good understanding of the competition. We are together, in good spirit and are not afraid of any team either by name or size, ” Biffo told SportingLife.

“Champions must be ready to face any challenge and as we prepare to be champions in this competition we are ready for them, but if they underrate us it will be at their peril.”

The former Kwara United coach also informed SportingLife that they were unable to register some of Kogi United’s new players for the tournament.

The trio of Sunday David from Teap FC Abuja, Ismail Jata and Richard Amadi will miss the match.

“The club’s management has done its part by providing all necessary things for the team. It is now the duty of the players to finish the business. Our new players will not be part of the game because we were unable to register them for the competition.”

  • Oyo, BAT warn against child labour

The Oyo State Steering Committee on Child Labour and the British American Tobacco, Nigeria (BATN), have warned against child labour.

They organised a forum to commemorate this year’s World Day Against Child Labour.

At the event held at Itesiwaju Local Government in Oke-Ogun, State Controller of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity Ayodele Olaniyi said children should not be allowed to operate machines or do hazardous work.

Deputy Director of Rural Development in the Ministry of Agriculture Ramoni Afeez said over 200 million children in the world are subjected to child labour.

He urged parents to stop exposing children to danger, adding that a study showed that children who carry heavy loads are “liable to suffer mental retardation”.

Azeez urged uneducated parents to enrol in adult education sponsored by the state government, so that they can be better informed.

Secretary of the State Steering Committee on Child Labour Pastor Marcus Williams said the agency has been fighting child labour since 1996, adding: “We found some children this morning labouring far away from their parents. You buy groundnut from many of these children, but do you ask them where their parents are?

Head of Leaf, BATN, Iseyin Agronomy Ltd, Thomas Omofoye said children are not allowed to work on tobacco plantations, adding that any farmer who engages the services of minors would be punished.

  • Investors warn against ‘hasty’ sale of Mainstreet Bank

Investors warn against ‘hasty’ sale of Mainstreet Bank

Some stakeholders are criticising the steps taken by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to sell Mainstreet Bank Limited, one of the bridged banks under its ownership.

The steps are hasty, according to some of those interested in the process, as well as stakeholders in the defunct Afribank from where Mainstreet Bank took its root.

The opposition is specifically against the one-week notice given by AMCON to those who are interested in bidding for the bank to express their interest. The notice is seen to be grossly inadequate for any meaningful due diligence to be done on the bank.

In advertorials in the media last week, AMCON gave a week’s notice to interested parties in the acquisition of the bank to submit their Expression Of Interest (EOI) not later than May 16.

To the parties, who asked not to be named so as not to jeopardise their interest, the “rush” by AMCON to push Mainstreet Bank through the divestment process without recognising the enormous work that needs to be done to ensure fairness and transparency in the eventual bid process, put a question mark on AMCON’s intention.

The potential buyers said while they were in agreement with AMCON on the need to move ownership of the bridged banks from the domain of public ownership and government control to the private sector, the process should be well “streamlined”, well publicised and allowed enough time to be examined by all interested parties, and should never be an issue that should be,as it were, rushed, as though there is more to it than meets the eye”.

“It is a welcome development that these banks are eventually finding their way into the private sector domain where they should be in the first place, but we insist that the process should be meticulous and not rushed, as no purpose will be served if the divestment is not transparent, or seen to be so,” they said, adding that  one week is grossly inadequate for a thorough job to be done and for every participant to be acquainted with the requirement to meet the rigorous process in the evaluation “except they want us to go home with the impression that this is a predetermined exercise.”

The groups who are insisting that every interested party in the acquisition of Mainstreet Bank  should be given equal opportunity,  cautioned that AMCON, having midwifed the banking transformation process successfully thus far, should not rush into taking  decisions or actions that would appear in the eyes of stakeholders to be pursuing  “a hidden agenda, surreptitiously”.

While  maintaining that the bridged banks, namely, Mainstreet Bank Limited, Enterprise Bank Limited and Keystone Bank Limited are national assets, to which every  Nigerian has a claim, they insist that  all the processes leading to their sale, or privatisation at any material time must be done in such a manner that no one is seen to be excluded, either by way of withholding information, or restricting access to the process by not allowing sufficient time for qualified people to participate therein.

The groups and stakeholders, said it would amount to disservice and criminal acquiescence for AMCON to ignore the concerns of Nigerians by going ahead with the process of selling Mainstreet Bank Limited or any of the other two when they are eventually brought to the market without incorporating the interest of other potential buyers (even if a single buyer)  by ignoring the call for elongation of the time allotted to submit EOI and proceed with the divestment as contained in the AMCON’s  advertisement.

They drew AMCON’s attention to the mood of the nation, regarding the kidnapping of “our daughters” by Boko Haram, stressing that no feeling of any one Nigerian should be further dampened by actions of those entrusted, not only to protect, but defend their interests.

Taking cognisance of the transition in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the groups said much confidence would be derived if AMCON were to tarry a while and give the CBN Governor-designate, Godwin Emefiele, and his team the benefit of introspection, rather than rush the process as though any harm will be done if the divestment is not accomplished today and foist upon the new CBN Governor a fait accompli.

They recalled the lingering and unresolved labour issues that have trailed the acquisition of some of the sold or acquired banks, stating that none of the bridged banks being prepared for privatisation at this time should be made to suffer the same fate.

They said  labour matters are intractable and should be properly addressed to avoid any backlash.

In its advertisement calling for Expression Of Interest (EOI), AMCON said interested buyers should provide information in respect of the vehicle or entity they intend to use in the acquisition, among others, with evidence of registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission, ownership of the acquiring entity, identifying all shareholders with five per cent , or more stake, and strategic rationale for the acquisition of Mainstreet Bank.

In addition, interested firms are expected to provide relevant financial services industry where they have acquired cognate experience and demonstrable evidence of ability to manage a bank of the stature of Mainstreet, as well as evidence of financial capacity.

In the case of a consortium, AMCON required that the parties must provide evidence of alliance or partnership, clearly indicating the leader of the group that is authorised to submit the EOI, adding that full names of contact persons, e-mail addresses as well as any relevant information that demonstrates credibility and eligibility for the transaction are required.

  • Rangers warn Emordi, Pillars against poaching

Rangers warn Emordi, Pillars against poaching

The Enugu Rangers management has warned the ex-coach, Okey Emordi and Kano Pillars against poaching any of their registered players ahead of the 2013/2014 Glo Premier League season.

The Flying Antelopes revealed that not less than 13 of their registered players had been invited by their former head coach to Kano, in a bid to sway them to Pillars as he initiated another recruitment exercise of his own in the aftermath of the club’s elimination from the CAF Champions League in the preliminary round.

Speaking with SportingLife on telephone, Rangers Director of Media and Publicity, Foster Chime said Rangers would go to any length to ensure that Emordi and Pillars ensure compliance and subsequently order their players to return to their base in Enugu.

“I want to bring it to the knowledge of the general public that Emordi, our former coach has been trying to poach some of our registered players for Pillars. He said the players were forced on him when he was with us. We are surprised that it is the same set of players he has been striving to poach away from us.

“He should be told that these players are ours and that we shall go to any length to ensure that we order their recall back to Enugu from Kano,” Chime informed SportingLife.

SportingLife got in touch with an official of Kano Pillars who declined to have his name published and he confirmed that the club had commenced another round of screening exercise and that some players of Rangers and other premier league clubs are presently training with the club in Kano.

  • 52 senators warn Mark against declaring defectors’ seats vacant

52 senators warn Mark against declaring defectors’ seats vacant

Fifty-two Senators have warned Senate President David Mark against being part of “the plot” to declare vacant the seats of some senators, who have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

The senators, who spread across PDP and APC, wrote Mark, advising him to either leave the constituents of the defecting senators to exercise the right of recall or allow the court to determine their fate.

In the five-page letter, dated January 20, 2013, the senators also reminded Mark that since there is a case on defection in court, it will be prejudicial for the Senate President to declare the seats of any Senat vacant.

The letter followed alleged pressure on Mark to declare vacant the seats of some PDP senators, who switched camp to the APC.

But, with 52 of 109 senators writing Mark, the power equation in the Senate is delicate.

The 52 senators urged Mark not to succumb to intimidation or pressure, which can jeopardise the unity and peaceful co-existence in the country.

They warned Mark against circumventing precedence in the Senate on similar matters.

They said it is a practice in the Senate that once a matter is in court, the Upper Chamber allows status quo ante bellum.

They said the threats to declare seats of some senators vacant were capable of undermining the independence of the Legislature.

The letter reads in part: “We the undersigned Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, conscious of the need to protect and preserve our nascent democracy and concerned about the future of our beloved country, Nigeria, hereby wish to state as follows, to wit:

“Having observed with keen interest the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), which is culminating in some senators planning to defect to other political parties, we are of the view that there is need to forestall imminent crisis in the polity.

“That we as Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria being on oath to defend the constitution and the interest of all Nigerians, irrespective of our ethnic background, religion, genders or political affiliation, believe that our responsibility and duty to Nigeria should override every other interest, hence, we decided to form a common front in the interest of our dear nation.

“Having reaffirmed our confidence in the National Assembly as the only institution empowered by the Constitution to protect and defend the collective interest and yearning of Nigerians, we are however concerned about some comments, statements and threats in the print and electronic media credited to some elected and unelected persons threatening to declare vacant, the seats of some Senators who are the representatives of the Nigerian people in the National Assembly.

“These threats we view with serious concerns are mischievous and capable of undermining the independence of the Legislature, thereby taking away the mandate given to such Senators who are the representatives of the Nigerian people.”

They cited precedence and legal reasons why the seats of defecting senators cannot be declared vacant.

They added: “We are also aware of a pending legal matter at the Federal High Court, Abuja with Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CSS/621/2013 on the same subject matter.

“In view of this, it is the practice of the Senate that where a matter is pending in a law court, such matter cannot be a subject of discussion or debate on the floor of the Senate.

“We hereby note that this is not the first experience in the Senate where some senators have moved to political parties of their choice as a result of one reason or the other, whereas such has not caused any political tension or intimidation.

“It is our resolve that the Senate should maintain and sustain this principle and precedence.

“It is our resolve that we do not support any attempt that the seat of any Senator proposing to defect to another party be declared vacant except by recall process from their constituents or by the pronouncement of a court of competent and final jurisdiction rather than politics of intimidation, harassment and or comment that could jeopardise the peaceful coexistence or unity of Nigeria.

“We finally enjoin the Leadership of the National Assembly to continue to accommodate all legislators irrespective of their views, believing that our country can only make progress when we tolerate, respect one another and the rule of law.”

Some of the 52 Senators: are George Akume, Bukola Saraki,Kabiru Gaya, Mohammed Sha’aba Lafiagi, Chris Ngige, Domingo Obende, Abdullahi Adamu, Oluremi Tinubu, Olusola Adeyeye, Umaru Dahiru, Wilson Ake, Bindo Umaru Jibrilla, Danjuma Goje, Alhassan Aisha Jummai, Kabir Garba Marafa, Olufemi Lanlehin, Mudasiru Oyetunde Hussaini, Ahmed Zanna, Ahmed Hassan Barata, Mohammed Ali Ndume and Ayoade Adeseun.

  • Osun PDP members warn against imposition of candidate

Chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State have warned the party’s leadership against imposing any candidate on members for the 2014 governorship poll.

At a meeting yesterday in Iwo, they said the imposition of an unpopular candidate would work against the party’s victory at the polls.

They alleged that some “selfish individuals” in the party were scheming to impose a candidate on members and they vowed to resist such an attempt thorough legal means.

The meeting was chaired by a PDP leader from the Ife/Ijesa Zone, Elder Joseph Obadare (JAO).

Also present were Mr. Debo Ayinde from Ede; Alhaji Debo Badru; Prince Bimbo Oyinlola; Alhaji Rasak Oyelami (KK), Prince Supo Bello, Mayowa Anjorin, Sanya Omirin, Teslim Igbalaye, Sunday Bisi, Prince Oyetunde and Yinka Adeojo, among others.

  • Osun labour leaders warn members against strike

Labour leaders in Osun State have told their members to ignore a call by three labour leaders to begin a four-day warning strike tomorrow.

The Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Comrade Akinyemi Olatunji; leader of the Medical and Health Workers Union, Comrade Femi Adebisi; the Vice-Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Tola Nosegbe and others dissociated their unions from the proposed strike.

They spoke with reporters yesterday after a meeting with their members at the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Secretariat in Osogbo, the state capital.

They said those calling for the strike – Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Bayo Adejumo; Saka Adesiyan of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Felix Adetunji of TUC – were not competent to do so and did not have members’ support, adding that there is a case pending in court over industrial issues.

Olatunji said: “We asking you to ignore the call by those claiming to be acting under the umbrella of the NLC, TUC and JNC to go on strike. Our grounds are as follows: That the strike is being masterminded by three persons, who did not consult us as executives of various unions before deciding on our behalf.

“This is not only undemocratic; it is an insult on our intelligence as equal partners in the labour movement. Most of the signatories to the strike notice are not representatives of Osun public servants.

“The NLC can only call for a strike based on the collective decision of all constituent unions. The state government, which is our employer, had at various times assured us that it is not opposed to our demand for the implementation of the minimum wage for grade levels 08 and above.

“It said it would get back to us in about four weeks. We do not understand why a few persons are hell bent on making us go on strike. The few people behind this wild cat strike are aware that the state government has requested us to nominate representatives from each council, the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and a labour consultant of workers’ choice to constitute a Revenue Monitoring Committee, which will periodically review salary upwards as government’s revenue improves. This is the practice in advanced and developing countries.

“We must resist the attempt by a mischievous minority to use us to enrich themselves through the use of industrial and anarchistic tactics. Let us report at our duty posts and ignore those who will quickly dump us as soon as they have achieved their goal of blackmail and extortion.”

Adebisi said Adejumo, who chaired the meeting where the “strike order was given”, was not competent to preside over such meeting because he has retired from the service of the Federal Government.

Mr. N. K. Ogungbamigbe said other unions are not under the NLC but partners, who should be involved in issues affecting their members.

Mrs. Nosegbe, said TUC has not met for over a year and cannot make decisions for about seven unions comprising the body.
