  • Warning against coup uncalled for

I was roused from my normal spiritual meditation by a post in the social media that some people in the National Assembly are advocating military intervention because of some happenings in the country.

It was like I was woken from a deep slumber but my full consciousness was regained immediately to quickly dismiss it as a bad dream and the first sign of lunacy from anyone advocating such aberration again in our polity.

Yes there are disturbing developments  across the land but they are not sufficient reasons to be frightening us and warning us of a coup in the country. If the executive is tending to create situations that can make staging of a military coup attractive to soldiers, is the performance of the Legislature itself more edifying?

Many of the elected and appointed people in the executive and legislative arms of government have engaged in ego trips, to dominate the public space and make each arm look ugly in the eyes of the discerning and the gullible members of the Nigerian society, and the world at large. They fight each other for reasons more of self, than largely of overriding public interest.

In the process, they obfuscate issues and try to pollute the public mind but no one is fooled. The National Assembly members are the most  guilty. When there’s public outcry against all manner of emoluments they collect from the public till, they go into a frenzy to confuse and mislead. One or two of them have publicly joined in denouncing the unjustifiable pay the green and red chamber guys earn but even then, none of this few is on record to have rejected or returned the jumbo pay that will make legislators in advanced democracies go green with envy. It’s all hypocrisy made crazily annoying.

When some of them are charged to court for certain offences, they see nothing wrong in closing down the business of the country’s law making body by going on solidarity trips to court, to side with their colleagues and thus intimidate the judiciary with their overbearing presence and comic shows in court.

If there’s going to be a coup, do they think in the National Assembly that they themselves will be spared? In case some of them don’t know or have gotten drunken to forgetfulness to remember it, the ‘dramatis personnae’ in the Second Republic, some of who, out of frustration or naivety, wished for a coup, suffered the most when the violent and illegal change of government took place. Some of the performing governors and the less culpable officers of state were sent to rot and die from their detention and prison experiences; while those who came out alive, became traumatised and dehumanised, such that those of them still alive are mere shadows or walking corpses.

The members of the Executive who are also exhibiting such impunity in their conduct and public utterances should also be reined in by their principal and be made to face trial for hate speeches, instead of members of the public who appear frustrated to the point that they talk and write unguardedly not conscious of the consequence of their outbursts.

The bootlickers in every corridor of government are in class of their own. They hasten the untimely demise of governments by their acts of omission and commission, shielding their principals from the stark realities out there in the street and feeding them with outlandish untruths about situations in the economy and in the polity.

Goddamn these bootlickers! They are so shameless and have no scruples whatsoever that they are ready to lick the sputum of any ruler who happens to be in power; and when that ruler falls, as he must, due to his bunglings which they aided and abetted, they will be the first to jump ship, turn coat and pledge their allegiance to the new occupant of the Government House by whatever name called.

Yet, I will rather live with such silly indiscretions than any invitation or subtle remarks that tend to send the wrong signals to the members of the Armed Forces to come into the political arena again.

The records of military interventions in Nigeria are inglorious, backward and unedifying. May we not experience coup-de-tats in our country again.

  • WARNING MEN: If you don’t do these 3 important things, you will never cure weak erection and quick release

WARNING MEN: If you don’t do these 3 important things, you will never cure weak erection and quick release

The biggest problem most Nigerian men face is that they just do not know the RIGHT THINGS to do to naturally cure their weak erections and quick ejaculation.

Instead, they rather spend money on some “new product” that promises to make their manhood size longer than a python, or they spend money on fake products similar to viagra that claims to help them last more than 60minutes in the bedroom.

Most of these products are plain rubbish.

And most likely will not work for lots of Nigerian men just because of their poor health and working condition of their body; and other bad habits like excessive masturbation, smoking and heavy drinking.

Because these bad habits kills your manpower and even when you take Viagra, after sometime the effectiveness will fade off. Then the problem of quick ejaculation and weak erection continues.

Why do you think that in some cases, a 60 year old man will still be sexually active while 30 – 40 year old men will be struggling to get an erection and cannot perform for more than 40 seconds in bed?

It’s simply because the 60 year old man is doing some important things that naturally makes him get proper erections and last 25minutes during sex.

Here’s the NAFDAC Approved Herbal Supplement that Cures Weak Erection and Helps Men Last 25minutes During Sex (No Side Effects and 100% Guaranteed)

Without wasting time, let me quickly tell you the 3 most important things you must start doing NOW to permanently cure your weak erections and quick ejaculation or else NOTHING will help you get better sexual performance.

    1. Avoid substances that kills your manpower
    2. Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet
    3. Take medicines that boost your sexual performance

Let me quickly talk about these 3 things and how they affect your sex life …

    1. Avoid substances that kills your manpower: If you are serious about improving the amount of time you last on top of a woman, and having stronger erections, there are certain substances you will need to avoid or reduce the amount you consume. One of them is sugar. A lot of men take too much sugar, and like it or not, sugar is not an enemy to your body. Sugar is taken mainly through sugary drinks like soda, fruit juices, beverages and other sugar coated foods like patries, fries, pizza, etc. When you consume lots of sugar, fatty foods then you are reducing your ability to last longer and be a strong man in the bedroom.

Click Here to See the Natural Herbal Supplement that Restores Sexual Manpower and Make You Perform over 25minutes During Sex without Side Effects!

    1. Exercise regularly and Eat a Healthy Diet: Do you know why most Nigerian men aroud the age of 35 suffer from something known as “Penis Heart Attack”. This is the condition when you cannot have a proper erection. And the main reason is because most Nigerian men do not exercise regularly. If you can develop the habit of exercising at least 15minutes every morning, it will go a long way in helping you get stronger erections naturally.I’m talking about simple exercises like walking, jogging, using the staircase, and push-ups. These exercises helps your heart to pump enough blood throughout your body and to your penis so that you can easily get erections.Another thing that has to do with being in good health, that can help improve your sexual performance is eating foods like vegetables and lots of fruits.

This alone can help renew your body system and make you last longer during sex with your partner. I’m talking about vegetables and fruits like watermelon, orange, avocados, bananas, apples etc.

    2. Take medicines that boost your sexual performance: One of the main reason why most men above 35 years tend to suffer from poor sexual performance is because at this age your body production of testerone becomes low.So all you need to do is increase your testerone production and you will get lots of sexual energy.

There are lots of products out there that comes in different forms that claims to work for men but most of them are plain rubbish.

What you need is a supplement professionally recommended by a doctor or men health specialist that will boost your testerone levels and treat erectile dysfunction.

  • Again, warning that today’s wheat damages health

The view presented below ought to have been presented as the second part of the wheat belly warning presented last Thursday in this column. That first presentation and warning was a post by a now unknown author on one of the WHATSAPP chat groups to which I belong. The heart of the matter, as we say, in that publication was that the wheat we eat today, either in its original wheat form or in transformed forms as in biscuits e.t.c, has been genetically modified to make it grow for harvest in a shorter time, more robust, plentiful and more resistant to infections and growth limitations. The net effect is that, to the naked eyes, this wheat still looks like wheat. But, structurally and genetically, it has been altered. And the alteration makes it produce radiations which are not the original radiations derived from the original wheat of Mother Nature. What our bodies extract from the food we eat are not those physical substances per se, but the rays which they capture and encapsulate for us. At the end of the day, everything is reducible to radiations or energy, as evidenced in the splitting of the atom to release its radiations or energy. Thus, we are educated that when our bodies digest food, it does so to release for us the energy in the components of these foods. And as the structural arrangement guides the functions of the food in the body, just as the structures of a building guide the functions it can be used for, so do the structures of natural wheat and altered wheat guide us to appreciate the different functions each will perform in the body.

The following presentation is a post by Dr. Eke Cyprian in KUSA GREEN PASTURE HERBS group chat which advises us to be careful about the type of wheat and wheat products we consume…over to Dr. EKE CYPRIAN.

“WHEAT is now the preferred swallow meal for many Nigerian families particularly in the urban centres. Sadly too, some rural dwellers have hooked onto the fad that wheat is a “healthy” food.

“Early this year, a middle-aged man from Ekiti State came to my office for solution to his health challenges – diabetes and high blood pressure. Upon enquiry on his diet, he said wheat was his major meal daily. According to him, virtually all the civil servants working at the state and local governments in Ekiti State also eat wheat as their regular meal. In fact, he said those that are not eating wheat particularly in the state capital could not afford it, but not due to knowledge of its harm to health.

“What an irony? Otherwise, how do we explain the preference of wheat to pounded yam, which the Ekiti people have been eating for good health and vitality centuries back?

“The prevalent consumption of wheat across the country has clearly shown that in the absence of knowledge, people can accept poison as therapy. After all, wheat is the first choice food for diabetics on the strength of doctors’ advice. Nationwide, wheat has overshadowed yam flour and other starchy foods that are peculiar to our culinary culture in Nigeria. Unfortunately, this is one dietary change that may prove suicidal for many people given the inseparable linkage of diet to health or ill health.

“Though wheat, like other grains, is rich in fibre and some other nutrients, it is one food anybody that desires wellness and long life should keep at arm’s length.

    ‘Why?’

here are THREE inherent DANGERS in the chemistry of WHEAT that make it a CLASSIC DESTROYER OF HEALTH. I call them the DOWNSIDES of WHEAT.

“The FIRST: WHEAT contains GLUTEN – a protein that causes inflammation, a systemic process that has harmful effects across all the organ systems in the body, including the brain, heart, joints, eyes and digestive tract. As a matter of fact, inflammation does not only precede all degenerative diseases like diabetes, cancer, stroke, glaucoma, arthritis and Parkinson’s disease, but also fuels their insidious progression. A review paper in the New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 DISEASES that can be caused by eating GLUTEN-CONTAINING foods. The diseases include osteoporosis, anemia, cancer, canker sores, fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The paper also linked gluten to many psychiatric and neurological diseases, including depression, schizophrenia, dementia, nerve damage, epilepsy and autism. The paper concluded that there are 120 or more diseases associated with eating foods that contain gluten. Dr. Joseph A. Murray, M.D., states that he is surprised how often gluten affects the brain.

“The SECOND: WHEAT study by Dr . J. Robert Cade, M.D. of the University of Florida showed that people with autism and schizophrenia have high level of PEPTIDES in their urine. These PEPTIDES, according to Dr. Cade, come from CASEIN (protein in milk and other dairy products) and GLIADIN and GLUTEN in WHEAT, BARLEY, OATS and RYE.

“Another study of 30,000 patients analysed from 1969 – 2008 reported in the journal of the American Medical Association, found that people diagnosed with GLUTEN-SENSITIVITY had a higher risk of death from cancer and heart disease than the normal population.

“Worse still, the bulk of wheat being consumed in the country is the AMERICAN HYBRID STRAIN, which has much HIGHER GLUTEN content than the European wheat.

“The THIRD: Inherent DANGER in the Chemistry of WHEAT is its High GLYCEMIC Index (GI). Glycemic Index is a scale that ranks carbohydrate rich foods by how much they raise blood sugar level compared to low glycemic foods. Wheat has GI of 71 compared to yam and sweet potato with GI of 49 and 54 respectively. Invariably, eating food with high GI like wheat regularly promotes WEIGHT GAIN and makes DIABETES INTRACTABLE. According to Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D., “WHEAT is a MAJOR contributor to OBESITY, DIABETES, CANCER, DEMENTIA, DEPRESSION and many Modern ills.”

“IF ONE MAY ASK, WHAT IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE RECOMMENDATION of WHEAT as a MEAL to FIGHT ——————— HIGH BLOOD SUGAR?

WHEAT IS A MAJOR DESTROYER OF HEALTH.

“PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL YOUR CONTACTS YOU MAY SAVE MORE LIVES THAN YOU CAN EVER IMAGINE.”

More reasons why you should eat Asparagus

My cell phone has been ringing since last Thursday, almost without break, and the message box has been running over and over, except for when the battery is down. The cause of this was the publication about how dangerous wheat foods have become to health and about how Asparagus (not Astragalus) offers the hope of a cure for many diseases, including those of the kidneys and even cancer.

These publications broke the series of another publication titled: CHRONIC INSOMNIA AND TRAINLOAD OF TROUBLES, which had appeared in two parts. Those parts explored the conventional thought about sleep and sleep disorders, such as the Tryptophan, Serotonin and Melatonin interfaces, and some little known potential causes of sleep disorder which, in many cases, are the actual culprits. These included electro-pollution and lack of earthing for excessive positively charged electrons and an influx of negative charged electrons from the earth through the body’s contact with it. Anyone who pays attention to Nature should rediscover this knowledge in the acts of animals. The chicken often scrapes a small nest in the top soil of the earth and nettles in, absorbing the earth’s negative charge electrons to balance positive charge from the atmosphere. Dogs and cats, never fail, also, to make their bodies make contact with the earth. Mankind hardly does so today and an imbalance of these charges in his body is thought to unbalance it and, at night, make easy, sound sleep difficult.

As for Asparagus, it has been linked with many health benefits which include “…fertility, relief from pre-menstrual syndrome, cancer, diabetes, hangout, cataract, rheumatism, tuberculosis, depression, neuro-degenerative diseases and convulsions.” It is praised also for the relief of high blood cholesterol and urinary tract infections (UTI), improvement of digestion, support for pregnancy and formation of plentiful, rich breast milk, healthy blood pressure.

For those enquirers who wish to learn more about Asparagus, it is a vegetable which comes from the Lily family in about 300 species and about three colours…white, green and purple. The white Asparagus is grown not under sunlight and, thus, lacks the green pigment from chlorophyll.

The purple variety is made purple by phytochemicals and anthocyanins, which have been noted in studies to give many plants their unique healing properties. Bilberry, for example, is purple and is one of the best herbs for protecting and healing the retina of the eye. Asparagus is rich in all the vitamins…A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, Folate, C, E and K. Its minerals include Iron, Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc, Potassium, Selenium.

With high amounts of the B vitamins, especially B1, B6, B12 and Follate, Asparagus offers a solution to Homocysteine which is grease like and blocks blood vessels to create problems for the heart and the blood circulatory system, including heart attacks and strokes. Many people think of only cholesterol when they suffer from blood vessel diseases, blockages in the blood vessel system, hypertension and even strokes. Even when their blood cholesterol work is normal and their problem persist, the tendency is to assume there is a clean slate of health, although the cause of the problem is unknown. That cause is likely to be homocysteine build-up in the blood vessels and tissues. Homocysteine is an end product of the body’s use of an amino acid called Methionine. It is like wood ash produced from the burning of wood, except that when the body burns methionine the resulting ash is the greasy homocysteine. This greasy substance does not allow blood to flow easily and well, raises blood pressure and damages the blood vessels and the heart. The folate of Asparagus, together with its Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12, causes homocysteine to dissolve and cause no problem. The folate of asparagus also helps to prevent low birth weight. Asparagus root is interesting. In Ayuverdic medicine, it is called SHATAVARL, which means “one with 100 husbands.” That is a signal of the fertility-inducing potential of this vegetable. The root is said to have aphrodisiac properties and regulate male and female hormonal balances. Additionally, it is said to be a cure for male and female sexual disorders. It does not just help women against bloating in pre-menstrual syndrome situations or help men improve on sperm count, sperm motility and morphology, it helps lactating women produce more breast milk, it helps menopausal women overcome such conditions of their “Change of Life” as interchanging excessive heat and cold known as hot flashes. For people who experience burning sensations in intestine or navel pain after a meal (dyspepsia), Astragalus root is well recommended. It takes this pain away through its digestive aid from INULIN, a chemical substance which does not get digested until it arrives in the colon. Here, it is fed upon by the friendly bacteria called LACTOBACILI. Inulin, a complex carbohydrate also known as pre-biotic, is, thus, said to aid nutrient absorbtion and reduce risks of stomach and intestinal cancer and food allergies which torment many people.

Sufferer from eye cataracts may look up to Asparagus for help. Its large amounts of Vitamin A protect the lens and the retina against oxidative stress damage inflicted by the blue spectrum of light. It is also endowed with some Glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant, which helps to clear these damaging free radicals from the body. RUTIN is another valuable component of Asparagus. It was presented decades ago for good vision. It supported the integrity of blood vessels, thereby preventing blood leakages from small blood vessels into the retina, a condition which may impair good vision. It prevents blood clots, hardening of arteries, thereby reducing hypertension. Blockages of tiny blood vessels of the eye may reduce blood flow to the eye, and this may impair good vision. Today, Rutin, a bioflavonoid, is suggested for rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory conditions generally.

For throat infections, bronchitis, tuberculosis or the need to improve lung function, Asparagus presents a helping hand. Even neuro-degenerative conditions are included in the healing basket of Asparagus which is offered,  as well, for anxiety, depression and epilepsy, convulsions and seizures. The root is especially recommended here.

Like all good things that are over done, Asparagus may present side effects if it is over-used. It may produce gas from the fermentation of some of its complex carbohydrates. It may cause allergies in people who react to Lily family vegetables, such as onion. And because it has large amounts of Purines, it may not be good for people who suffer from kidney stones. For Purines convert to Uric acid which, in the absence of adequate amount of Uricase, an enzyme, to convert uric acid to urea for excretion by the kidney through the urine, a uric acid build-up may occur and stones may form.

Never’theless, Asparagus is good in the diet. It is a diuretic and its folate and B12 Vitamin are good for mood enhancement and depression. Its tryptophan supports restful sleep and, because of the fibre and vitamin B6, it may support good weight management. So, enjoy Asparagus in your diet.

  • Polytechnic lecturers begin five day warning strike today

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) will today begin a one-week warning strike to protest  the government’s refusal to honour its agreement with the union and fund the polytechnic sector.

ASUP National President Comrade Usman Dutse said the union’s one month ultimatum to the government expired in December 2016 without any visible sign of the government willingness to meet the demands of the union, leaving them wig no choice than to embark on a warning strike.

Dutse said in a statement after an emergency National Executive Council meeting of the union in Abuja that the union had earlier given the government an ultimatum in July 2016, but decide to stay action on their proposed strike because of appeal from the government and renewed the ultimatum in November, 2016.

He said despite the magnanimity of the union, the government failed to address the issues raised by the union, which include the non implementation of the NEEDS assessment reports, poor funding of public polytechnics, deliberate attempt to frustrate the resolution of the meeting of the council on establishment in July 2016 and victimisation of union members as well as interference in union activities.

Other issues include Jon release of CONTISS 15 migration arrears, non release of visitation panel reports of federal polytechnic a as well as non release of ministerial panel to federal polytechnic a in Auchi, Oko, Yaba and Ado Ekiti, delay in the review of the federal polytechnic act, non commencement of renegotiation of ASUP/government agreement of 2010 and government’s tardiness in the appointment of Rectors of Federal a polytechnics.

He said that there was no attempt by the government to improve the funding of public polytechnics in the country as the 2017 budget currently before the National Assembly does not have any provision to that effect.

He said further that there were attempts to frustrate the decision taken at the National Council on Establishment held in Minna in 2016 directing the removal of the age long entry level dichotomy against HND holders, while no further step has been taken on the issue.

He also accused the government of not showing any interest in amending the Federal Polytechnic Act, adding that the bill amending the act currently before the National Assembly was the effort of a private member.

•Union to protest IOCs’ unfair practices

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) is planning a three-day warning strike on January 9, to protest alleged anti-labour practice of International Oil Companies (IOCs).

Its Southwest Chairman, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos the strike was inevitable.

He said: “We are not gaining anything by going on strike because it is not a joyful thing. But as a union, we have to protect and fight for welfare of our members.

“We have sensitised the public and sought the intervention of the Federal Government on anti-labour activities of IOCs, but we are not getting results.

“Our members that put in their best within the duration of time they worked were not paid their severance package by their employers when they sacked them.

“This is a big slap and it will not be allowed.

“What they are practising here in Nigeria, they cannot practise in their countries. So, that is why we say enough is enough.

“We will take the bull by the horns.”

The union’s chairman said what led to the planned strike was inherited by the administration, while some occurred within the same government.

“Two hundred and fifty members of our union were affected by the divestment by Chevron Nigeria Ltd., in Southeast.

“And this is giving us a serious concern because they cannot feed their families.

“The Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige, asked parties to maintain the status-quo ante and we complied because we respect the authority.”

“But the IOCs seem to be above the law or more powerful than the government; they failed to maintain the status-quo ante agreed to by parties.

“Chevron had to tell our 250 members that their contract with it was no more binding on it because it cannot trace the company that employed them as contract workers for it.

“The minister said Chevron had to pay the sacked workers, but its management refused to comply.

“It got to a time when Ngige called for a meeting in Abuja to mediate; at times its representatives would not show up.

“We would risk our lives and resources to Abuja, no IOCs member would come.

“Even when their representatives came, they would be those without a mandate to represent the organisation just to frustrate the discussion,’’ Korodo said.

He alleged that all other IOCs in the country were involved in these anti-labour practices.

“We do not want the public to see the strike as if we are punishing Nigerians.

“That’s why we are using this period to protest by asking tanker drivers to hang green leaves on their trucks and our members to wear red cloth.

“By next year, if our grievances are not addressed within this period, we will proceed on a three-day warning strike.

  • Osun doctors to begin warning strike Wednesday

Resident doctors in Osun State have said they would begin a three day warning strike from Wednesday to Friday.

Rising from an emergency meeting, the doctors under the aegis of the Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Doctors, said they were ready to join the national strike ordered by the NMA in Abuja.

The chairman of the NMA in the state, Dr. Suraj Ogunyemi, said it had become difficult for the doctors to meet their family resonsibilities.

The doctors working with state government, the resident doctors and consultants with the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ife also resolved to assemble at 9.00 am at their state secretariat (the OSAMDO House) along Gbongan road, to start a peaceful protest rally to terminate at the state House of Assembly.

They also planned to meet on Monday February 22 to review the strike action.

In his reaction, the media aide to the Osun state governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon said: “The government of Osun has been negotiating with the striking doctors to consider the overall implications of the prevailing economic situation across the country which is not peculiar to OSUN.

“Over 20,000 other workers of the state have seen the reason why what obtained last year cannot just be feasible this year and that is why the labour force in Osun has consented to the agreed payment structure which is in tune with the realities. If over 20000 workforce in the state could see reason we expect the NMA to look at the issues objectively and not just Join the fray without taking into consideration the realities of the moment.

“The government has held so many meetings and at some point they even said they could see clearly the situation and they would convey a meeting and get back to the government. It was shocking therefore to know that the doctors went back on their words and giving false impression that the government does not want to negotiate with them.

“There are eminent and accomplished Nigerians in the medical profession who had called them to see reason. Agreed they render essential services which concern saving of lives but the Hypocratic Oaths they swore to should make them think through it that in the face of the current economic realities, it would amount to unfair deal on the part of the doctors not to consider the fact that the government had shifted grounds to satisfy their demands.

“The Aregbesola administration has the record of promoting workers welfare of all categories. If there is no other thing involved we expect doctor to even lead the campaigns for understanding with the government believing that the vagaries of the global economy is what they should understand.”

  • Warning for grandparents using their pension pots to help families

Experts say grandparents must ensure that they have enough money left in their pension account to take care of themselves.

According to research, a quarter of grandparents, who have given some form of financial help to their grandchildren, took the money from their pension.

Substantial sums are being handed out at an average of £1,633, and grandparents are planning to give away £2,938 more in future, according to retirement specialists.

One in seven plans to take money from a pension once they reach retirement age to give to grandchildren. Some are helping with university fees or deposits on a home, with about one in 20 handing over gifts of more than £10,000. More than a third said they gave cash as a “living inheritance”, with hopes of being around to see their grandchildren enjoy the money.

The research indicates that due to the impact of rising cost of living, many grandparents have stepped in financially. However, experts warn that grandparents risk compromising their own standard of living by being over generous. “It’s important that grandparents ensure they have enough money left for themselves,” says John Perks of LV=.  “Even smaller outgoings like bills can become harder to meet later in life as the cost of living rises.”

New pension rules that came into effect in April are expected to increase grandparents’ generosity. Under the rules, retirees are allowed to take all of their pension savings as a lump sum. According to research from Saga Personal Finance, one in five of those, who are taking advantage of the freedoms choose to give cash to the family.

A similar proportion using equity release to raise cash from their home say they give some of the money as a gift to loved ones.

Alex Edmans, head of retirement at Saga Personal Finance, says: “The desire to help your children and grandchildren is part of human nature, whether that’s to give children a helping hand or so that grandchildren can get on the property ladder. But a word of warning: being the generous generation can have its downsides – as some, with greater longevity and increasing costs of care in later life, may find they have given away too much.”

Thousands of Gazans flee after Israeli warning

•165 killed; over a thousand wounded
    •UN calls for ceasefire

Thousands fled their homes in a Gaza town yesterday after Israel warned them to leave ahead of threatened attacks on rocket-launching sites, on the sixth day of an offensive that Palestinian officials said has killed at least 160 people.

“Those who fail to comply with the instructions will endanger their lives and the lives of their families. Beware,” read a leaflet dropped by the Israeli military in the town of Beit Lahiya, near the border with Israel.

Despite intensified Israeli military action – which included a commando raid overnight in what was Israel’s first reported ground action in Gaza during the current fighting – militants continued to launch rocket after rocket across the border.

No one has been killed by the more than 800 rockets the Israeli military said has been fired since the offensive began, and during Saturday night’s barrage, customers in Tel Aviv beachfront cafes shouted their approval as they watched the projectiles being shot out of the sky.

The Gaza Interior Ministry, in a statement on Hamas radio, dismissed the Israeli warnings as “psychological warfare” and instructed those who left their homes to return and others to stay put.

The warnings cited roads that residents could use safely and said Israeli forces intended to attack “every area from where rockets are being launched”. The military did not say in the leaflet whether the strike would include ground troops.

At least 4,000 people fled Beit Lahiya and crowded into eight U.N.-run schools in Gaza City yesterday, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said.

Some arrived on donkey carts filled with children, luggage and mattresses, while others came by car or taxi. One man, still in his pajamas, said some residents had received phone calls warning them to clear out.

“What could we do? We had to run in order to save the lives of our children,” said Salem Abu Halima, 25, a father of two.

Israel says a ground invasion of Gaza remains an option, and it has already mobilized more than 30,000 reservists to do so, but most attacks have so far been from the air, hitting some 1,200 targets in the territory.

International pressure on both sides for a return to calm has increased, with the U.N. Security Council calling for a cessation of hostilities and Western foreign ministers due to meet on Sunday to weigh strategy. Hostilities along the Israel-Gaza frontier first intensified last month after Israeli forces arrested hundreds of Hamas activists in the Israeli-occupied West Bank following the abduction there of three Jewish teenagers who were later found killed. A Palestinian youth was then killed in Jerusalem in a suspected Israeli revenge attack. A Hamas source commenting on the air strike against the Gaza police chief’s home said the officer, Tayseer Al-Batsh, was in critical condition. All of those killed in the air strike. which television footage showed was reduced to piles of rubble, were members of Al-Batsh’s family. Israel says it is targeting Hamas militants and facilities, including the homes of senior operatives. However, the United Nations has estimated that 77% of the people killed in Gaza have been civilians. The UN Security Council called for a ceasefire and peace talks on Saturday. It is the first time since Israel’s offensive began that they have issued a statement, with members previously divided on their response. Rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel on Saturday evening  Palestinians mourned their relatives in a morgue in Gaza

Early on Sunday, Israeli air strikes destroyed most of the security headquarters and police stations run by Hamas Islamist militants, the BBC’s Rushdi abu Alouf in Gaza reports.

The homes adjacent to the security compound suffered extensive damage, as the headquarters are located in the densely populated neighbourhood of Tel al-Hawa in south Gaza, our correspondent adds.

It is believed to be the first time Israeli troops – thought to be naval commandos on this occasion – have entered Gaza since Israel launched Operation Protective Edge, which it says is aimed at stopping rocket attacks and destroying Hamas’ capabilities.

At least five Israelis have been injured this week by rocket and missile attacks, two of them seriously, but no Israelis have been killed by the attacks. Wars between Hamas and Israel tend to finish with some sort of ceasefire. Factors influencing the timing of a deal include the amount of blood spilt, and the level of international pressure on both sides to make a deal.

It looks as if that point has not yet been reached. Neither side is ready for that yet. This conflict may have to get worse before the pressure for a ceasefire becomes unanswerable.

On Saturday evening, four Israeli missiles hit a three-storey house in Gaza belonging to police chief Tayseer al-Batsh, a Gaza health official said.

The strike killed 17 members of the same family, while Tayseer al-Batsh was wounded but survived, officials added.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri described the raid as “a heinous crime”, adding: “Israel will pay a heavy price for its aggression against the Palestinian people.”

  • Ekiti election was a warning sign, says Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief John Odie- Oyegun, has stated that the outcome of the Ekiti governorship election was a warning sign to the party.

Oyegun, however, said the APC has also demonstrated the kind of politics it wants in the country.

He spoke while addressing journalist at the Benin Airport during his visit to Edo State yesterday.

At the state government house where he paid a courtesy visit on Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Oyegun urged the party leadership to work towards reconciliation of aggrieved members.

He said Edo should be leading the example for other states to bring total harmony to the party.

According to him: “We are in the eye of the storms. The whole world expects a lot from Edo. It is my hope that we are able to build the kind of movement others will be jealous of.

“The process of total reconciliation within the party has commenced. The healing process is underway.”

He praised Oshiomhole for the courage to be neutral when two persons from the state contested for the chairmanship position of the paper.

The APC’s helmsman said he has tried to ameliorate issues that arose from the convention.

Oshiomhole said the state would work with Chief Tom Ikimi, adding that people must be ready to make sacrifices for peace.

  • Global warning

Our climate is changing. What is meant to be the chilly season of harmattan apparently feels more like a scorching heat-wave. Nigeria is supposed to have a wet and dry season, with the wet season starting at different times in the north and south. The harmattan season, the West African winter, is a season of gusty, dry winds, relatively cool at night but warm by day. Presently it is the season of harmattan, but in contrast to the norm of the climate, the weather is hot throughout the night and day. Like the weather, most Nigerians should agree that our climate is changing all the time. Because of global climatic cycles, some of the changes are natural while others are caused by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and gas emissions. In the past when I heard scientists talking about protecting the environment and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, I put it down to the fact that they did not have better things to talk about. With millions of men, women and children being abused and starving the world over why would a scientist solely be concerned with how many vehicles we drive? Besides, any talk about the ozone layer sounded more like the title of a Sci-Fi adventure movie for children to me back then. But upon doing some research and coming across numerous meteorological accounts that climate change is one of the most pervasive threats to the web of human life, I realized the supreme importance of considering the devastation of weather change. What prompted me to do research in this field was as a result of the countless, recurring natural disasters that have been occurring and reported all over the world in the last couple of years. Every time one turns on the news there seems to be a report of a hurricane, earthquake, typhoon, snow storm, drought or cyclone and I wanted to understand whether these unfortunate events had any connection with the talk of the greenhouse effect.

The truth is that much of our lives depend on our climate because we rely on water stored underground, in lakes and reservoirs for our personal use and crop irrigation. If the climate changes and warms up, the ability of the land to store moisture or the rain to fall changes. Evidence of the effects of climate change is presently being felt throughout the world. All over the globe glaciers are melting, avalanches are threatening, soil is eroding, water is flooding, snow is receding and oceans are warming; posing a risk to many marine creatures. The warm climate is upsetting seasonal cycles, harming ecosystems, affecting agriculture, food production and causing sea-levels to rise. In addition landslides, drought and famine are experienced. On top of this imminent threat, hotter heat waves create an ideal breeding ground for disease infested insects and rodents to expand their range while species are pushed to extinction. In Nigeria the effects could include an increase in epidemics of water-borne diseases such as malaria, typhoid, hepatitis and cholera.

Statistics show overwhelming evidence that the planet has warmed by about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the course of the past century with the final 2 decades of the 20th century being the hottest on record. This is due to rise even more rapidly in the coming decades. The cause of this hybrid is because of the thickening layer of carbon dioxide pollution mostly from power plants and automobiles that traps heat in the atmosphere. Evidence shows that carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels used in vehicles and dirty power plants has formed a blanket around the earth and is warming it. The gasses act like the gas of a greenhouse, trapping heat that would otherwise radiate off into space. The heat then rebounds onto the earth’s surface and the planet’s temperature rises, creating the greenhouse effect. Its harmful impact on the worlds’ climate is now so overwhelming especially given the fact that we have been pumping it into the world atmosphere for more than 2 centuries. Although a certain level of global warming is natural and essential to sustain life, the excessive emission of greenhouse gases accelerates this process by trapping too much heat and resulting in devastating effects on the world. Meteorologists argue that the recent change of weather is the natural consequence of this green house effect. Whether we subscribe to this argument or not, we can’t deny that the recent behaviour of the weather and atmosphere has been irregular to what we are normally used to.

If our behaviour as a people has had anything to do with the freak trend of the climate, it is imperative for us to study natural events and strive to correct the continuing damage on the world at this stage. While it is impossible to completely stop global warming we do have the ability to lessen the process, allowing nature time to adjust to this man made problem. Since we know that the majority of heat trapping gases comes from vehicles and power plants, we have the capability to curb their emissions by perfecting modern technologies and passing stronger laws regarding vehicle use and power plant management. Typically, it is quite common to see cars and trucks in this country travelling the motorways with an unbelievable amount of exhaust fume, as if in an exhaust fume competition. Regulations need to be passed prohibiting vehicle owners from operating such hazardous machines because apart from damaging the ozone layer, they further pose threats to other motorists. Since we are a heavily populated country with a vast number of vehicles, the Nigerian authorities should educate the nation on the ill effects of climate change to our environment and the importance of adapting to it. Government and industries should adopt initiatives to take the immediate action that will lead to more efficient public transport, cleaner energy production, increasing the efficiency of buildings and better responsible industrial and agricultural practices.

In a country like Nigeria, there is a requirement for far more effective waste management and disposal. Everywhere we go in this country; there are dumps of rubbish and pollution on drive ways and road sides that it has almost become a trade mark of our towns and cities. The environmental sector in Nigeria needs to introduce more strategies for waste disposal. Previously, past governments had a sanitation eradication program on Saturdays where people were not allowed to roam the streets until 10, after a general clean up operation. The streets back then were much cleaner than they are now. Maybe the government needs to consider revisiting this practice in order to facilitate the clean up of the environment. The Nigerian government must consider adopting these or other alternative strategies and policies so that it can encourage industries to adapt to climate change. Furthermore, the initiative could include a sensitisation exercise on the benefits of recycling products such as aluminium, glass, plastic, cardboard and paper. This would help because it would allow industries to save a lot of energy needed to make new products. In addition the use of energy efficient technologies and renewable energy resources like wind and solar power could be integrated by the industries that have the means.

On an individual and community level, we can each help cool the earth by small actions such as turning computers off overnight because of the energy it uses, planting trees and plants in order to combat erosion and integrating agricultural lands. The use of better water storage systems such as underground tanks and improved water treatment plants, improved rainwater harvesting strategies and creating community water resources to meet human or livestock needs can also be effective. Even though resources are limited, people engaged in the transportation business should try and service cars regularly and not send them out onto the streets with an unreasonable amount of exhaust seeping out. This is very common with molue buses and trucks.

All Nigerians should get involved in curbing the climate change that is fast becoming a threat to our existence. The whole process of environmental awareness is a difficult feat because as humans we tend to be nonchalant about the effect of gas emissions and water misuse on our environment. It is so easy for us to take the air we breathe for granted and not give a thought about the numerous ways we are polluting it. Unless a stance is taken, the cumulative impact of climate change is bound to affect our air and water quality even worse than it is now, resulting in inestimable consequences on every body living on this planet. If not in our lifetime, the fall back of the damage will affect the occupation, property and lives of our descendants.

Since the root cause of climate change is thought by scientists to lie primarily in the phenomena of huge emissions of gas, we effectively have the power to mitigate its damaging impact on our planet. To protect the health and economic well being of current and future generations, we honestly must reduce our emissions of heat trapping gases by using the practical solutions already at our disposal. Solutions to global warming are available and everyone has a role to play in implementing them at all levels of society.

Since embarking on my research and recovering from the ignorance of climate change that plagued me, I now consider global warming as one of the most serious challenges facing our species today. And since we were the original cause of the problem we can always take solace in the fact that we can also create a solution for it. So even though Nigerians are in the middle of a harmattan heat wave, we should strive to consider our role in keeping our environment clean and eventually saving our world. I hope that the cumulative negative effect on natural resources and the balance of nature created by our over smoking exhaust pipes and rubbish laden streets serves as a global warning for global warming!
