    Agency plans waste management campaign

Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) is planning to embark on a door-to-door waste management sensitisation programme in Asaba.
Head of Environment and Water Mr. Isaac Nwosu told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba the programme was part of measures to curtail the effect of flood in Asaba and in line with the agency’s mandate to ensure good environment.
He said DSCTDA was aware that one of the ways to check flood was good waste management, adding that poor handling of waste by people was a challenge.
“We have come to realise that the attitude of indiscriminate disposal of waste is something embedded in the psyche of the people.
“As an agency saddled with the responsibility of managing the capital, we have concluded plans to launch a public sensitisation and effective door-to-door sensitisation of residents on waste management.
“The essence is for residents to understand the menace of indiscriminate dumping of waste and the health hazard it poses.
“We will ensure sanitation laws are enforced to achieve a change of attitude, with people complying with the principles of managing waste,’’ Nwosu said.
He said the government made available waste bins in Asaba, covering 50 per cent of the cost price.
“It is an offence not to own waste bins and non-payment of waste bill. Once enforcement of these laws begins, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and waste will be reduced in Asaba.’’

  • ‘Waste management reform’ll strengthen environment’

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, has said the on-going reforms in the solid waste management tagged the “Cleaner Lagos Initiative” it is a way to sustain the environment.

Adejare spoke at the February edition of the monthly media parley of his Ministry in Alausa, last Monday.

He pointed out that the implication of the reform was that residential waste collection and the supporting backbone would be concessioned to investors who would deploy modern equipment and machinery equipped with global information system (GIS) facilities.

Adejare stated further that the Cleaner Lagos Initiative was aimed to protect the environment, human health and social living standards of Lagos residents by promoting a harmonised and holistic approach to environmental challenges and ensuring improved operational efficiency and addressing the lacunae in the existing legislation to expand the scope of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to enable it enforce, regulate and generate revenue from the waste management process.

Other goals of the initiative according to Adejare are: identifying and harnessing wealth creation opportunities in the waste management sector and putting in place a proactive Flood Prevention Strategy (FPS) that will ensure all-year- round drainage maintenance.

The Cleaner Lagos Initiative, he further explained, would also involve the development of new and rehabilitation of old facilities, such as Engineered Landfill Sites (Epe I & II and Badagry), Transfer Loading Stations (Agege, Oshodi and Simpson), Material Recovery Facilities with recycling, recovery and waste reduction efforts.

The commissioner disclosed that the initiative would create 27,500 new jobs by engaging the unemployed youth and the existing 4,500 street sweepers and transforming them to Community Sanitation Workers (CSW) to carry out manual sweeping in all the inner streets in the 377 wards of the state.

“The Community Sanitation Workers will be uniformly kitted, insured, paid above the minimum wage and equipped to tackle the challenges of their newly defined scope of work” he said.

He stressed that the Lagos State Government was determined to give to Lagosians a sustainable and functional environment which they would be proud of since environment remained the bedrock upon which development and prosperity rest.

Meanwhile, Adejare stated, while presenting the achievements of his Ministry in the Month of February, that efforts to regenerate the environment continued with the enforcement of compliance with sanitation regulations in  markets, eateries, toilets, car wash, event centres, filling stations and shopping malls across the state.

He also stated that the Ministry supervised the construction of 19 drainage channels to de-flood various areas in the State, while it cleaned 1,960 meters of collector drains across the state.

In the same vein, 748 tenements and 160 private facilities were monitored for wastewater compliance, while 547 abatement notices were served on tenements and private facilities respectively and poster removal was undertaken in 110 streets.

  • Sweden, Lagos to collaborate on waste to energy development

Sweden, Lagos to collaborate on waste to energy development

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare has received in audience, Prof. Nazdaneh Yarahmadi, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden and the VINNOVA, the Swedish government agency that administers state funding for the research and development’s project leader, representing the team from Sweden.

The meeting, which had the Director, Legal and Advisory Services, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mrs Yinka Adeyemi in attendance, was aimed at discussing the importance of waste management and waste to energy development in the State.

Dr. Adejare opened the meeting by expressing the importance of waste management to Lagos State. He specifically mentioned and highlighted his gratitude to the Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) Scandinavian Chapter, Ayoola Lawal, for organizing the meeting.

According to Professor Kim Bolton, Researcher from University of Borås, this project is firmly based on, and extends, the present UDI project, which is based on establishing facts and tools to measure and predict the technical status of pipelines for water, sewage and energy distribution.

“We will investigate the demand for these solutions in Nigeria. At the same time we will extend these activities to waste management, which we know is a challenge in Nigeria and where we have begun cooperation. In order to give the pre-study a concrete and manageable activity, we will focus on the piping systems used in water and sewage systems, as well as waste management via recovery to energy. In addition, the project will investigate methods and partners for implementation of the innovations that are identified as most possible to succeed.

“SP, 4IT, FOV Fabrics AB and University of Borås, together with support from Sweden Water Research, WIN, and the know-how accumulated in the Swedish water industry can deliver enormous value to countries like Nigeria, and at the same time provide a great economic potential return. The consortium has extensive experience in international projects as well as strong and relevant networks in Nigeria,” Bolton said.

At the meeting, Mrs Adeyemi introduced the VINNOVA project and presented LAWMA’s interest in the project while Prof. Yarahmadi and colleague explained the outcome of the project in some detail as well as the meetings that were held with Lagos State University and LAWMA. We also described our visit to the Olusosun landfill as well as the material sorting facility that is located near Ojo, an outskirt area of Lagos. We presented our admiration at the progress that has been made at the material sorting plant during the past five years, and expressed our interest to support further development of material sorting in Lagos.

Adejare recounted interesting and relevant details of the current and future development in waste handling in the state.

“There are plans to introduce new trucks for waste management and to develop new landfill sites. The material sorting plant outside Ojo may be closed since it is located too close to a local hospital,” the commissioner said.

The commissioner confirmed that the project is timely and that it can support the planned development in Lagos. He gave further assurance for the collaboration and co-creation of innovations between Sweden and Lagos.

Creative waste management training for pupils

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has enlightened some pupils on how to engage in creative waste management and recycling.

At a programme themed “Recycling: A secured future for our children”, the agency exposed the pupils on how to identify different categories of waste and means of converting them to useful products.

LAWMA General Manager Wahab Ogunbiyi said waste could be generated in liquid, gaseous or solid form, noting that the solid waste retains its form as it doesn’t decompose.

Speaking on the significance of sorting to recycling, LAWMA Chairman Mr Olumuyiwa Adejokun said it accelerates the process and reduces the stress of separation.

“Once we are able to separate inorganic waste like plastics, cans, nylons from organic waste right from source, then, we find it easy to recycle. So, there is nothing like waste; what you call waste is resources for other products,” he said.

Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on the Environment chairman Saka Fafunmi urged the pupils to position themselves as change agents in their environments.

The Government Technical College Agindigbi, Ikeja came first in the waste recycling exhibition with seats made from disused tyres.

A pupil, Aremu Matthew said: “We see people sitting on the streets with tires and we thought we could make it more comfortable by adding ropes to it.”

Osinbajo unveils 50 waste management tricycles in Kano

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has inaugurated 50 waste management tricycles procured by the Kano State government. The equipment are part of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje administration’s efforts to fulfil its promises on sanitation and management of solid waste in the state.

Osinbajo unveiled the tricycle-based solution when he visited the state  last week. He praised the government for taking the initiative in order to ensure that effective waste management reached all parts of the state.

The waste management solution was developed by Simba Motors Ltd, manufacturers of the vehicle, and the Kano State government. The waste disposal solution is built on the body of a ‘Kary-Go’ Tricycle, with significant local content in the production process.

The Managing Director of Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), Group Captain Muhammad Kura, said: “The Kary-Go Waste Management Tricycles have been procured to cater for areas where bigger vehicles cannot get access, and are expected to work in tandem with our heavier machines. We have deployed these tricycles because they are compact, easy to drive, economical and safe to use.”

REMASAB oversees the disposal of solid waste centrally for the state.

  • Oshiomhole retires permsec, seals off museum

Edo State governor, Aams Oshiomhole  has approved the immediate retirement of the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Environment and Public Utilities, Mr. H. A. Ikhelowa for alleged dereliction of duty.

The Governor also  ordered the immediate sealing of the Museum in the state capital and arrest of the Manager over illegal operation and non-maintenance of the ground.

The  approval for the retirement of the Permanent Secretary is contained in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere.

According to the letter dated January 4, “the Governor also approved the immediate suspension of Mr. Nicholas Osemwengie, Acting General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board and the Director-in-charge of Street Lights in the Edo State Ministry of Environment and Public Utilities, Engineer Ejemai Martins.”

According to the letter, “their cases have been referred to the Edo State Civil Service Commission for further action.”

The Government’s action is not unconnected with an inspection of the Governor round Benin City, the state capital, Friday where he saw heaps of refuse in parts of the city and people displaying wares on the walkways and roads.

During his inspection of the Museum ground, the Governor expressed dissatisfaction with the heaps of refuse left by fun-seekers at the place.

He said the manager of the Museum sublet the place for business without the government’s authority. Oshiomhole also ordered the arrest of a woman found cooking on a sensitive equipment connected to the water fountain at the Musuem.

During his inspection of the Oba Market road, Governor Oshiomhole ordered the instant seizure of wares displayed on the walkways and the road by traders and directed the immediate evacuation of dirt which littered the road.

Speaking with reporters, the Governor said: “we are back to work in the New Year and I am happy that the contractor are back to work. Most of them will return fully to work after the New Year holidays.

“I am satisfied with the quality of work and people are excited that the work is going on. You have noticed the job they are doing at the airport road and the challenge of the underground drainage and that is extremely important. Once the drainage is completed, flood from the adjoining streets will now drain into the primary drain which will now drain it into the river. That means the issue of flooding in this area will be a thing of the past. We are remodelling the road and creating bus stops. We will do more in the second term than we did in the first term”, he assured.
