  • Cooling with moon plants in hot weather

Today is Christmas 2014. Happy Christmas! With this wish, I pray the day is well spent, not in the typical revelry which has come to characterise the way many people observe the anniversary of this memorable event, but in quiet, sober reflection of how its message has been well understood and applied in daily life by every Christian. I may address this later.

Meanwhile, the thought which came over me last week as another Christmas approached was delay of the harmathan season this year. Long before I was born, the harmattan interfaced in Nigeria between the rain season and the dry and hot spell, when it can be so hot that old people may die of sunstroke. With cold, dry and foggy African wind, the harmattan visits the continent at about the same time winter is upon Europe. Some hammatan authorities believe the name of this continental trade wind blowing over west Africa between the end of November and the middle of March came either from a Ghanaian word or the Arabic, Harram. In North Africa, the harmattan is reported to be so active that it may disturb social life and temperament, making thought and decisions erratic or wrong. Even a Christian Christmas hymn invites us to come to “the house of the Lord, who had provided for our needs before arrival of winter”.

    Lagos weather

In Lagos, the rains seemed to have stopped abruptly this year. They often did in years past with short and thunderous heavy rains. Since the rains stopped, the Lagos weather has been so hot it would appear the air was burning. Everyone was sweating profusely in-door or out-door. The handkerchiefs market was booming and the Chinese export market was booming. Back home in Nigeria, the cold water industry, too, was thriving, as was the soft drinks industry. Fruit sellers experienced bigger sales. All over Lagos, the wheel barrow has ceased to be a construction site tool for loading and moving, sand, mortar, blocks or cement bags. People from diverse lands, including Chad and Niger Republic, load fruits in them and, irrespective of the law forbidding street trading, display their wares and selling on the highway in the rush-hour traffic of workers returning home for the night. Most of these fruits, unknown to the buyers, are moon fruits, which are good for consumption this season if they are eaten at the right time.

    Moon plants and sun plants.

The sun, the moon and the stars are not ornaments in the skies. They were all created to make human life possible on earth, and affect every aspect of earth life. The moon broke away from the earth a long time ago. Some plants are known as moon plants because the moon affects their lives more than the sun and the stars. For similar reasons, some plants are known as sun plants. Our health benefits from our eating moon or sun plants at the right time.

efore the rain season comes again, the weather will be hot and we would all be sweating. Back in high school, I learned that “rapid cooling” was bad, and that it may be worse to “cool down”, as we say, with ice-cold drinks. Ice-cold drinks shock the nerves and the system. The kidneys, in particular, are said not to like them. Besides, the body has to work extra hard, utilising hard-earned energy to warm up the cold drink to body temperature. This is extra work, and unnecessary wear and tear. When cold drinks are taken with or over a meal, it slows the digestion of the meal. In the refrigerator, the cold arrest enzyme activity to keep foods almost as fresh as we kept them in there. In the same way, it froze the food in the stomach of a corpse discovered under ice in Europe about 15 years ago. The man was overrun by a river of ice hundreds of years ago during the age of glaciers. When the ice berg which preserved his body melted years ago, the corpse was discovered. The food he had just eaten before he was buried alive did not digest. This is an indication of what may happen, though on a smaller scale, when cold drinks are taken with or over a meal.

Drinking copious amounts of cold or cool water or drinks when excessive perspiration makes us thirsty may suggest ignorance about what sweating means and about how to respond to it. There are many possible causes of sweating or excessive sweating. Sweating is the excretion of excess heat in the body through salt-based fluid. The excess heat may arise from the consumption of spicy food, caffeinated drink (soft drinks, tea, coffee), alcohol, beverages, medications, fever, infections, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) synthetic thyroid hormones etc. Sweat is made of water, electrolytes (sodium and potassium in particular) and fat. When these are replaced with white sugar in soft drinks, a depleted electrolyte stock may be aggravated by the acidosis which sugar and carbonated drinks cause in the body. For electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and magnesium may be required to bring the internal acidic condition to an alkaline status. In time, potassium deficiency may lead to primary or mild hypertension, headache, sore and aching muscles, tiredness and, in worse case scenarios, growths of all kinds. In other extreme conditions, a sunstroke or heatstroke may occur which may lead to death. Doctors save the day when we are electrolyte depleted by giving us drips. In emergencies, one may take Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) salts which can be bought at a patient medicine store. Coconut water may also help. To avert such an emergency which calls for this intervention, one may regularly take green drinks. These drinks are minerals rich. One of them is wheatgrass. Another is spirulina. Yet another is barley grass. There is hardly any mineral, vitamin, and co-factor they do not contain. They help to restock the nutrient lost from excessive sweating which can be complemented with the nutrients from moon plants. Moon plants, as stated earlier, are those plants influenced by the moon than by any other stellar or heavenly body.

    Moon Plants

It is a pity man no longer seems to do anything right, that is as Mother Nature demands it be done. We plant and harvest without regard to lunar or heavenly guidance, and, for this reason, do not seem to derive the best benefits from foods and herbs. Isaac Newton long ago established the Laws of Gravity. These laws teach us that the tides are affected by the moons gravitational pull. The moon exercises a stronger pull on the earth than the sun does, although it is much, much smaller than the sun, because it is nearer to the earth. The moon has two major phases: the waxing and the waning. The waxing phase takes the moon to full moon. The waning phase takes it to half-moon or quarter moon. The waxing moon “pulls the nearest body of water a little away from the solid mass of the earth beneath it, and at the same time pull the earth a little away from the water on the farthest side. In this manner the moon sets up two tidals bulges on opposite sides of the earth”.

The same forces affect the soil’s water content. They create more moisture in the soil during the new or full moon. An increased moisture makes seeds sprout and grow. At the North-western University, Dr. Frank brown carried out a 10-year experiment which showed that plants absorbed more water during the full moon even when he carried out the research in-door, away from direct exposure to the moon, he discovered that the results were the same.

Rudolf Steiner, founder of the Anthroposophical Movement, developed a “biodynamic method” of planting “The movement saw a correlation between science, Nature, Universal Laws and spiritual concerns”. He taught that a relationship existed between the earth, air, fire and water which related, also, to specific parts of the plant. Thus, earth corresponded to Roots water to Leaf grown, fire to seed production and Air to flowers. From this, I can assume that when seeds are eaten in a hot weather, one adds fire to fire.

John Jevons, author of How to grow more vegetables, says increasing moonlight during the waxing moon phase stimulates leaf growth. Growth of the plant above the ground slows when the moon begins to wane. At this time, the roots are stimulated. This shows our herbalists were wise and in tune with nature. They know what time of the day to harvest different parts of a plant for food or medicine.

In 1939, Frau Dr. Kolisko and in 1956 Maria thun experimented with root crops and found that germination of their seeds was influenced by lunar phases, with maximum germination on the day before full moon. The experiments of people such as these show we do not need fertilisers to grow robust and health-giving foods which, in any way, fertiser- grown foods cannot oblige.

In Psychic gardening, Mellie Ugldert says: “All water ich plants are true children of the moon, such as the cucumber, pumpkin, melon and those living in and on the water such as the water Lily, Brandy-bottle etc, and on the bank such as the willow and the plants with half moon shaped leaves or oral leaves composed of two half-moons.

“Like a person a plant never, of course, belongs to one heavenly body or sign alone; they are named after the sign or star which clearly predominate in firm and habit. In man, moon plants promote the creation and flow of fluid such as the operation of glands, menstruation, the excretion of urine and sweating. That is why cucumber juice is good for promoting better circulation during woman’s menopause. Climbing moon plants twist to the left (yin) and can be recognised by that. Those that turn to the right are of the sun”.

Millie Uydert says that, in man, moon plants are good for ailments. For example, chickweed may be used against convulsions. For sharp memory, she suggests cashew nuts. Papilionaceae is a good nervous system tonic. As food crops, beans can be used for nutrition. Nos Vomica is good also for the nerves.

When we perspires we lose not only water but chemical substances as well. The composition depends on what has been eaten or drunk, and for how long the perspiration has persisted. Generally, perspiration contains water, minerals, lactate and urea. The minerals may comprise (1) sodium (2) potassium (3) calcium (4) magnesium. The body also excretes trace metals such as (1) Zinc (2) copper (3) iron (4) chromium (5) nickel (6) lead.

Sodium deficiency may affect nerve function. Potassium shortage may cause primary hypertension and muscle aches and pains and palpitation. Calcium and magnesium deficiency may cause spasms and constipation.  Zinc deficiency may cause infertility, slow healing of wounds, immune depletion, eye problems, nail, skin and hair problem Iron deficiency would bring low blood count and anaemia. Water or soft drinks alone do not replenish these loses. Most water brands have no minerals and are acidic LASENA WATER, Nigeria’s first artesian well water from more than 500 meters depth is alkaline and has calcium, magnesium, zinc and other minerals. LASENA is 7.4pH. SUPERIOR ALKALINE WATER, infused with minerals – dense CORAL CALCIUM is 11.5pH and has to be mixed with five bottles of normal water for each bottle to hit 7.4pH. tissue or cell salts, biochemic and homeo pathic, may be dissolved in these water brands or any other to enrich them.

Moon plants are fluid-rich some of them are tomato, water melon, pawpaw lettuce, spinach cabbage, broccoli celery etc. Dr. William Rogers in THE WONDERFUL WORLD WITHIN shows that lettuce is one of the richest vegetables on earth. Adding the juice to say, orange juice or lime or lemon juice, which have lots of potassium, makes a revitalizing drinks.

After a day’s hard work, I take wheatgrass and spirulina drink to which add food grade edible salt (96% silica) and

Heineken blames sales drop on wet weather

Heineken has blamed “unseasonably wet weather” in Europe for a drop in both sales and profit in the three months to the end of September.

The Dutch brewer, which owns Strongbow and Bulmers as well as its eponymous lager, said sales fell 1.5 per cent to €5.1bn (£4bn) in the third quarter.

Heineken said net profit in the quarter had also fallen, down to €460m, compared with €483m a year ago.

It comes just weeks after it rejected a takeover from rival SABMiller.

Despite the weaker-than-expected performance, Heineken said it was still confident on its performance for the full year.

“Amidst a volatile global environment and poor weather during the high selling season in Europe, we maintained top-line growth,” said Heineken chairman Jean-Francois van Boxmeer.

Revenues in eastern and western Europe fell 8.5 per cent and 4.1 per cent respectively.

But the drop was offset by gains in emerging markets, with revenues up 10 per cent in Asia and 3.6 per cent in Africa.

It said the popularity of its Tiger brand in Vietnam and Malaysia helped drive Asian sales higher.

In September, Heineken rejected a takeover offer from London brewer SABMiller, saying the proposal was “non-actionable”.

It said the Heineken family, the founding family which still owns half of the firm, wanted to preserve the firm as “an independent company”.

At the time, Heineken said it was confident it would continue to grow.

  • Rain skin care

    Rain skin care

AS we approach rainy season, it is time to get ready for the wet weather ahead. How healthy one’s skin is is the first step towards an excellent supple body. But how you maintain your skin will determine how healthy it can go this cold period. It is very necessary that you take special care of your skin during this season in order for it to look radiant and beautiful despite the heavy down pour. So, you need to take extra measures to protect your skin against harsh weather because the rainy season brings about other potential problems for the skin. Colder weather does not mean your skin is not in danger of drying up. In fact, the skin tends to get dry easily during colder weather.

To keep your skin healthy and protect it against the cold, you must make sure it is supple and full of moisture to avoid cracking and dryness. Here are some tips to keep you pretty when it is raining cats and dogs:

•Wash your face with plain water; avoid using soap because too much soap can dry up your skin and steal its natural oils.

•Petroleum jelly is good for this season; it will seal in moisture.

•For your skin to retain its glow throughout this cold period, you need to look for a body cream that contains some vital vitamins.

•Also, body creams that contain avocado oil and sunflower oil will make the skin glow and warm.

•Drink plenty of water. Water will detoxify the blood streams and aid the free flow of blood. Drinking at least seven to eight glasses of water every day helps purify the body from within and helps us flush all the harmful bacteria out. Avoid too much intake of soda and other alcoholic drinks since these can lessen our youthful look.

•Eat a lot of fresh fruits; fresh fruits and vegetable plus a good healthy diet can make skin healthy at the same time help us achieve a balanced weight.

•After you wash your hands, use hand cream to seal in moisture.

•African shear butter (ori) is also good for this period, and if you are the type that cannot do without a particular body cream, you can rub ori after you apply your body cream.

According to Bose Akintoye of Lady B11 Beauty Salon, “light make-up made with waterproof foundation powder, waterproof mascara, waterproof lipsticks, waterproof liners and waterproof shimmer is more advisable. And wear water-based moisturizers during the rainy season to keep away oily skin, acne and water loss due to perspiration”.

  • ‘Adverse weather condition shrinks farm incomes’

Declining water supplies and extreme weather swings are still the biggest concerns for farmers and producers as most farmers received less than half the normal amount of precipitation.

To this end, weather conditions are again going to have a significant impact on farm incomes in the coming months.

Programme Coordinator, Farmers Development Union, Mr Victor Olowe said the cropping sector could register lower yields and quality in the northern parts of the country if there is no rain around July to help in nurturing good harvest.

As a result, he said poor weather conditions could hit farm businesses resulting in decrease in average profits as costs could spiral and output fell. Olowe said climate change is a threat.

Farmers in the northern parts of the country have access to sufficient land on which to increase production, but to meet this challenge there is a need for investment in inputs, infrastructure, improved skills and innovations derived from research, to drive rural growth and diversification.

He expressed fears that extreme weather could wreak farmers, food supply chain and harvest, showing again that the industry is in the front line of climate-related impacts.

  • Ambrose prays for good weather

    Ambrose prays for good weather

Super Eagles’ right-back, Efe Ambrose has called on God to grant his team good weather in today’s make-or-mar second leg, final play-off of the 2014 World Cup holding at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar. “I won’t deceive you, the weather in Calabar this time around is a little bit harsh and makes us a little bit uncomfortable. Everybody is feeling the harsh weather here, but we don’t have any room for complaints because the job has to be done tomorrow (today). By the special grace of God we will beat Ethiopia again (today). “Although we pray for friendly weather, it is too late for the weather or any obstacle to stop us from qualifying for the World Cup. The sprit in camp is very high and we are already thinking of how we are going to make Nigeria proud in Brazil. “We were in the last edition in South Africa and this time around as African Champions we want to better the result we achieved in the 2010 Mundial”, the Celtic of Scotland defender told SportingLife yesterday. He, however, solicited for support from all football stakeholders in the country for the Eagles to pick the World Cup ticket. “As usual we are soliciting for support and prayers from soccer-loving Nigerians because they say united we stand, divided we fall. “I believe with the support of everybody we will crush Ethiopia and zoom into the finals of the 2014 World Cup slated for Brazil”, Ambrose assured.

  • Wet weather makeup

    Wet weather makeup

You know how hard is it to keep your makeup spotless during the rainy season? The toll is pretty harsh on face, hair and body in general. In order to be able to flash our best side it is essential to bunch up the most vital tips to keep our makeup dazzling. Apply these tips and bring out the best of your look in this season. This time of year promises quick and surprise showers that can ruin our look in the blink of an eye. Though there’s no need to quit using makeup, it is still wise to acquire all the helpful professional tricks and face the rainy days with confidence and style. As the seasons change, it is recommended to learn the new way of applying cosmetics and using the right products our skin really requires.

Besides the vital skin care rituals there are other practices that must be applied for the best results.

The keywords when it comes to rainy season makeup are water-proof and light makeup. These are two qualities that are essential to surviving this period with a flawless look. If you manage to adopt the tendencies of the season you’ll see the beneficial results pretty soon. Smudging and other makeup disasters can be easily prevented if you approach the problem from the right angle. Let’s see the most important makeup tips for rainy season.

    Makeup base

Beginning at the base it is worth mentioning that often the main cause of smudging is the excessive foundation use. Those who find it indispensable might still use a thin coat of it. However, it should be preferably water resistant.

    Eye makeup

Rain immediately means waterproof mascara. Since normal mascara would quickly smudge when in contact with humidity it is recommended to use a special formula that will resist the extreme weather conditions.

It is a well-known fact that these products can’t be washed off so easily.

However, with the use of the proper makeup removers this problem will be also ruled out.

Makeup artists also recommend switching the dark eye shadows with the more natural and sheer colors preferably also with a waterproof quality. The colours of the season offer endless options to look great even if the weather outside is gloomy.

    Blush

It is a common mistake that ladies commit each rainy season. They use a blush with an inappropriate texture. The rainy days scream for complex compositions, that’s why it is a golden rule that when sporting a water-proof makeup we should choose a mousse or cream blush that can resist the impact of humidity.

Makeup gurus often neglect the use of blush and instead practice a smashing trick. They use a bit of lipstick you can spread with your fingernails and the effect is just as gorgeous as with the use of blush.

    Lip makeup

Lip gloss is the top notch no-no beauty product of the season. It might get in contact with humidity which can result in smudging and an unflattering look.

That’s why you should rather rely on high quality lipstick that will fabulously top your makeup. There are several formulas and brands on the market that guarantee a long-lasting effect.

Make sure you test it beforehand in order to avoid any lip makeup accidents. You can either go for the blood red lips effect or for the classy and natural makeup trends. Choose the one you can pull off with great style in order to perfect your look

  • Can Ajimobi weather the storm?

    Can Ajimobi weather the storm?

The death of Alhaji Lam Adesina created a leadership vacuum in the progressive camp in Oyo State. Now, Governor Abiola Ajimobi has filled the void as the rallying point. Can he weather the storm? BISI OLADELE and JEREMIAH OKE examine the challenges that will confront the new leader.

The death of  former Oyo State Governor Lam Adesina created a leadership vacuum in the progressive camp in the state last year. The departed Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chieftain was a rallying point and stabilising factor in the camp.

However, the mantle of leadership fell on Governor Abiola Ajimobi, following his endorsement by party leaders across the local government areas. The governor was a follower of the ‘Great Lam’, who was his secondary school teacher.

When Ajimobi retired as the Managing Director of National Oil Company, he opted for politics. His first port of call was Adesina’s residence. When his former teacher emerged as the governor, he became a senator representing Oyo South District on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

Ajimobi hails from a political family in Ibadan. His father was an experienced politician in the Second Republic.

A month after Adesina’s demise, party chieftains resolved to make Ajimobi the leader of the party and political family. The party chieftains also adopted him as the party’s governorship candidate forthe 2015 election.

However, critics have described the proclamation as hasty. They pointed out that 2015 is still over two years away.

    Leadership challenge

The party, as currently constituted in Oyo State, has as members, aggrieved chieftains of the AD, All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The old members actually belonged to the AD. They include Governor Ajimobi, Senator Femi Lanlehin, Dr Bayo Adewusi and other big wigs, who have large followers. Both Ajimobi and Lanlehin left the AD in 2003, but returned to the fold two years ago.

These traditional AD leaders followed Lam with little or no reservation. They accepted his leadership and recognised him as their true leader. They were also in the majority.

The former ANPP members migrated with Ajimobi to the ACN in 2010. They accepted the governor as their leader and remained loyal to him, and by extesion, to Lam.

The former PDP members are those that joined the party after realising the potential of the ACN in the 2011 election. They left the PDP due to the Adedibu/Ladoja crisis that rocked the fold.

Lam was the rallying point for all the interests. While some of the core AD members, who were close to Lam, wanted to appropriate the gains of the 2011 electoral victory, Ajimobi set his own standard for political appointments. But Lam prevented the collapse of the political family by appealing to the aggrieved members to jettison personal interests.

Party membrs who have devised a method of channeling their grievances through Lam will now learn to relate directly with the governor. The former PDP members, who have complained about Ajimobi’s style, will also learn to adjust to the governor’s style. Interestingly, many of them have discovered that the governor is approachable. But Ajimobi has declared that he will never compromise his integrity and avowed commitment to transparency.

The governor is presiding over a ‘Government of Unity’ in the state. However, he is now expected to combine politics with governance as he plays the role of a political leader. Observers contend that these challenges will drain his energy and time, and even distract him from governance.

For the governor to remain relevant in Oyo State politics, he must fulfil his campaign promises to the people. No governor has savoured the advantage of a second term in the state. Party members expect him to break the jinx. The only way he can do that is to live up to expectation in office.

    State administration

To succeed, many believe that Ajimobi must sustain his contacts with the grassroots and tread the populist path. Oyo State is big. Although Ibadan dominates politics in the state, the onus is on him to give other districts and constituencies a sense of belonging.

Lam achieved success as the party leader between 2001. Yet, many people refused to join the party because they loathed his radical nature. It is expected that Ajimobi will be able to enlarge the progressive coast in post-Lam era.

However, Ajimobi faces the challenge of ensuring cohesion in the party. He should be able to demonstrate that he is a father figure. He is expected to accommodate all shades of opinion. Ajimobi is expected to listen to grievances, more, build more leaders and mentor them, create more time for party affairs and delegate, when necessary.

To succeed as the new progressive leader, many expect him to combine the leadership traits of the late Chief Bola Ige and Lam, learn from their mistakes and be sensitive to political complaints.

In ACN, not all the party chieftains supported the endorsement of Ajimobi as the leader. The governor is expected to reach out to his foes within the fold. An Ibadan ACN chieftan, who spoke on the endorsement, appealed to members to support the new leader. He noted that the endorsement may have also divided the party.

“I want to appeal to our members in other districts to accept Governor Ajimobi as the leader of the party because he is a good leader. He has the charisma to handle the party in the state.

“The position of the leadership of a party in the state requires experience and courage, but we are still waiting for the stand of our national leaders on the issue.

Oyo State ACN Chairman, Chief Akin Oke, said the party had not declared its position on the endorsement, assuring that the party’s position would soon be made known to the public. Oke said this would be done at the appropriate time, following consultations with stakeholders and the national leadership of the ACN.

“However, some opposition parties are trying to use that opportunity to create problem within the party, but they forget that our party is one. We are united across the nation. The party is yet to make a pronouncement on the issue. We are silent on it and, when the appropriate time comes, we will talk about it”, he added.

A chieftain of the party from Oke-Ogun area of the state, Otunba Niyi Adeagbo, said Ajimobi was endorsed as the leader of the party because of his achievements in office. He said wisdom dictated that he should succeed Lam as the governor.

“He should be leader because he is also the governor. The governor is the number-one citizen in the state and he is expected to manage the affairs of the party. If anything happens to the party, he is responsible and answerable to the national leaders of the party.

“So, I think having him as the leader of the party is justified. I am from Oke-Ogun area of the state, and in our area, we believe in the governor and we support the endorsement”.

Another party chieftain, Alhaji Abass Oloko, said that party members under the umbrella ofAsiwaju Omoba Group, which kicked against the endorsement, are faceless people.

“Those opposing the governor as the leader of the party are faceless people. They are the enemies of the progressive camp in the state. We do not know any group called Asiwaju Omoba in our party. There is no faction in Oyo State ACN,” he said.

    Sustaining the legacy

As the governorship candidate for the 2015 poll, the question is: can Ajimobi build on his 2011 feat?

During the last general elections, Ibadan leaders unanimously endorsed his candidature. They declared that they wanted a fresh blood and new direction. Many of them openly declared that the former PDP governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala did not deserve a second term.

Ajimobi’s adoption as the ACN flagbearer will shape the response of the opposition parties in the state to the critical contest. Now, the question is whether the collaboration between the ACN and Accord Party can be sustained till 2015. Many feel that the AP leader, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, is a PDP chieftain sojourning in the Accord Party. Instructively, Accord Party’s participation in the 2011 polls swung the pendulum of victory to ACN.

Accord Party has also remained an ally of the ACN in the House of Assembly. The support of Accord Party legislators has assisted the Speaker, Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu, to stabilise her leadership.

Can Ajimobi, through a deft political move, enlarge the coast of ACN, ahead of the next elections? Can the governor motivate his opponents to defect to the ruling party? Can the new party leader become a symbol of unity in the progressive bloc in Oyo State?

Observers contend that, if Ajimobi is able to pass these tests of leadership, he will emerge as a successful leader of the big political family.
