Abia teachers, pensioners to be paid on Wed

The Abia State Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi, has promised teachers and pensioners they would get their salaries and pension arrears on Wednesday.

Okiyi, who didn’t mention the number of months to be paid, said the government thanked workers for their positive contributions to the success recorded by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration.

A statement by him reads: “In the spirit of transparency, and in furtherance of the need to truthfully inform our people at all times, permit me to state as follows:

    – We battled through the bureaucracy and exigencies of banking to ensure that salaries and pensions were paid latest on December 22 to all government workers.

-All Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) got their November salary, with at least six MDAs receiving their December salary before the close of business last Friday.

-The relevant banks received necessary documentations for the payment of December salary to the outstanding MDAs, but couldn’t complete the process before the close of business last Friday.

-Teachers were to be paid with others, but necessary documentations were completed late last Friday.

-We, therefore, expect teachers and pensioners to get their salaries on Wednesday, with other MDAs yet to get theirs.

-Further payments will be made to teachers and pensioners as we begin the disbursement of the third tranche of the Paris Club refund.

-We apologise for the inability to complete the payment processes as instructed by Governor Ikpeazu, and assure workers that everything will be done to ensure they are paid on the said dates.

-Meanwhile, local governments received necessary funds to pay workers last Thursday, and we are monitoring the payment situation.

-A full brief on the status of compliance with the governor’s instruction will be issued on Thursday. Thank You.”

  • Orji Kalu’s daughter finally set to wed

This year promises to be an extra-festive affair in the family of ex-Abia State governor, Orji Kalu. Besides the usual glitz associated with Christmas in his kind of household, the family is also preparing for the wedding of their beloved daughter, Neya Kalu, who got engaged in August.

The big event is set for Boxing Day at Kalu’s country home in Abia.

Neya, Kalu’s daughter, has had to overcome several hurdles, some self-made, to come this far. Perhaps it was her desire to escape the unending recriminations from her failed marriage to Igbo big boy, Chima Anyaso, that took her to the University of Buckingham where fate had a gift in store for her in the person of her groom-to-be. It was while pursuing her master’s degree that she met her soon-to-be-husband, Lawrence Iyere, who runs a thriving business. The two fell in love and the rest is about to become history on December 26.

  • Tunji Alapinni’s son set to wed

Weddings involving top brass of the security services are usually high profile affairs. But when the solemnization of holy matrimony is intended to join two of these families together, the profile of the event is doubly raised. That is going to be the case this October as the families of Brig-Gen Koffi Fidelis (rtd) and AIG Tunde Alapinni (rtd) come together to celebrate the marriage of their son and daughter.

The love story of Yewande, daughter of Brig-Gen Fidelis and Bankole, AIG Alapinni’s son, is a happy case of life imitating the silver screen. They first met in the 90s when they attended the same primary school, Maryhill Convent School, before losing touch for some time. But love delayed was not to be love denied as the couple reconnected in 2006. Since then, their relationship has grown from strength to strength.

While Yewande serves as an Education Consultant at Student Travel International in Lagos, Bankole works at Excel Exploration and Production in Lagos. With the initial ceremonies out of the way, their wedding will take place on Saturday October 29 at Catholic Church of the Presentation on Oba Akinjobi Street, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. Reception will follow immediately at The Haven Event Centre, beside Arch Bishop Vining Memorial Church, Fajuyi Way, Ikeja, Lagos.
