  • Adebayo’s wedding day driver speaks

    Adebayo’s wedding day driver speaks

An Ado Ekiti-based elder statesman Pa Olabode Olajide, yesterday relived his experience of driving the late Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo on his wedding day in Awo-Ekiti,  in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Awo-Ekiti, the hometown of the late General’s wife, is less than five kilometers away from Iyin-Ekiti, where the then new couple retired to after their wedding to enjoy the honeymoon for some days.

Pa Olabode, 84, who was the official driver of two Premiers of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Ladoke Akintola (both deceased), described the late Gen. Adebayo as a gallant and patriotic soldier, who was interested in the welfare of his people.

In his immediate reaction to the death of Gen. Adebayo, Pa Olabode said his demise was painful to him, noting that he cherished all the memories of his relationship with the retired general.

The retired driver urged youths to emulate the late Gen. Adebayo’s courage, generosity, discipline and readiness to identify with his people anywhere he saw them.

According to him, the late Adebayo’s good performance as military governor and at all command positions he held, contributed to his election as president of the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), where he advanced the interest of the Yoruba race.

Pa Olabode said: “His (Adebayo’s) death was painful to me. He was a good man and performed well when he was governor. I drove him on his wedding day in 1954.

“He got to Ado Ekiti in a Land Rover. He was then the ADC (aide-de-camp) to the then Governor-General. He came to hire a car and he hired my taxi cab in which I drove him to Awo-Ekiti, the hometown of his wife on the day he was getting married in 1954.

“He chartered my car marked G 4129. It was an Anglia Ford car. I drove him to his in-law’s house. His wife was the daughter of the late Alawo (monarch) of Awo-Ekiti and her name was Aunty Adeola.

“After the wedding at Awo-Ekiti, I drove the new couple back to Iyin-Ekiti, Adebayo’s hometown, where the new couple entertained me and many other guests that were there. That was in 1954, he was then a Lieutenant in the Army.”

Extolling the virtues of the deceased, Pa Olabode said: “He was a gallant soldier; a soldier of repute; very active and his good works earned him the position of governor of the Western Region.”

Pa Olabode said he did not work in the Western Region civil service under the later Gen. Adebayo because he (Olabode) had been elevated to senior driver’s cadre in charge of recruiting drivers into the civil service.

Speaking more on Adebayo’s life, Pa Olabode said: “Immediately after the coup when Lt.-Col. Adekunle Fajuyi was assassinated, he replaced Fajuyi and he was there for some time during the regime of Gen. Yakubu Gowon.

“After some years in office in Ibadan, Adebayo was replaced by Brig-Gen Oluwole Rotimi. The late Adebayo performed well as a military governor. He was a gallant and strong soldier. No wonder, he was chosen as leader of the Yoruba Council of Elders, many years after his retirement.

“I want the future generation to emulate his gallantry, valour, industry and selflessness. He left a good legacy and performed very well in his lifetime.”

A middle aged woman, Mrs. Akparobi Orobogha, was yesterday allegedly shot dead by one of the soldiers deployed to enforce the no- movement restriction during environmental sanitation at Jakpa Junction, Uvwie council area of Delta State.

It was learnt that soldiers stopped the tricycle conveying Mrs. Orobogha from the wedding ceremony at the roadblock but the rider refused to comply.

One of the soldiers, according to the family members of the deceased, fired a shot at the fleeing tricycle which allegedly killed the woman.

Military sources however countered the bride’s mother died from a bayonet injury fired by one of the soldiers.

First child of the deceased, Alero, who was speaking from Ekpan Police Station where the case was reported, said the killer-soldier had been whisked away by members of the JTF contrary to reports that he has been arrested.

She said colleagues of the killer-soldier at the roadblock where the incident happened have been taken to Warri Area Command for interrogations.

“They have not arrested the soldier. JTF whisked him away. His colleagues that were at the road block together are now at Warri Area Command.

“It was my mom that was shot, not my sister that is wedding today. She was coming from the wedding,” Alero said.

A senior army officer at the 3 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Effunrun Barracks, who craved anonymity, debunked claims that the deceased was shot.

He said it was a bayonet that unintentionally pierced the women.

He added the soldiers involved in the incident had been rounded off by the Army for interrogations.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Celestina Kalu (DSP), said the case was already being investigated.

He however said no arrest had been made by the Command yet on the case.

Asked to clear the air on the controversy over the killing, the police image maker said the Command will wait for the autopsy report before giving any information.

According to him: “It’s not in our place to give an expert opinion on what it really was; whether a gun wound or a bayonet wound.

“It is when they must have done the autopsy that autopsy report will tell us what it really was. But the matter is still under investigation, no arrest has been made yet.”

  • Bride writes exam on wedding day

Bride writes exam on wedding day

Which is the most important between a wedding and an examination? For Oluwatunmise Adejube, an HND 1 Accountancy student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), Ondo State, both are dear. On her wedding day, after she was pronounced a new bride, Oluwatunmise rushed to the school to write an exam. ENIOLA OLURANKINSE reports.

It appeared like an Aro (a comic display) taken too far. All was silent in the examination hall as students prepared to write a tough paper. Then a lady, clad in a sparkling wedding gown, sauntered in, walking dazzlingly on the narrow path between the hall benches.

Before invigilators at the Old Auditorium,  the exam venue, understood what was happening, the tension-soaked atmosphere became relaxed as the lady’s action elicited laughter from the stressed students, who thought it was all a drama. But, this was not a comedy, neither was it a rib-tickling stunt. It all happened at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO) in Ondo State.

The lady, Oluwatunmise Adejube,  was actually a candidate for the examination.

After she said “yes I do” to her beau, Oluwatumise, a student of Department of Accountancy, hurriedly left the Owo Local Government Area, where she swore matrimonial oath, and rushed to the school for her Higher National Diploma (HND) 1 examination.

She created a scene when she breezed into the examination hall in her flowing wedding gown. She was accompanied by a group of ladies, who formed her bridal train. They stormed the school in a convoy of three exotic cars.

Barely an hour later, Oluwatunmise rushed out of examination hall to reception, where her husband and guests were waiting for her arrival at the ceremony.

An invigilator, who spoke told CAMPUSLIFE on condition of anonymity, said Oluwatumise was allowed to write the paper despite her lateness for the exam because of her determination not to be carried away by the euphoria of her wedding.

Speaking with our reporter after  writing the paper, Oluwatumise, who now answers Mrs Adesina, said she had no choice than to leave the court room to write the paper, stressing that her education was as important to her as her marriage.

She said: “When the wedding date was fixed some months ago, nobody knew it would clash with my second semester examination. What appears to be a saving grace for me is that, both the wedding and examination are taking place in the same town. If otherwise, I would have missed the three-unit paper and carry it automatically.”

The groom, Adesina, told CAMPUSLIFE that he was startled when his bride told him the examination timetable clashed with the wedding. He said he , Production Management, was considered the toughest and her spouse would be writing the paper on the day of their wedding.

He said: “I really praised her dogged determination. It was like a tug of war because she had to prepare for her exam and ran around for the wedding at the same time. Now that the confusion is over, I give thanks to God for making it easy for us.”
