    24 weightlifters speed up preparations for African Games

    Some 24  Team Nigeria ‘s weightlifters continue to intensify preparations for the African Games slated for Ghana next month.

    A top official of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) told our correspondent that the Weightlifters are doing fine in camp in Abuja and are raring to go at the African Games by the time the successful lifters are announced by the coaches in due course.

    The women’s Weightlifters in camp are: Folarin Morufat Ajoke (Lagos), Uweh Monica Mary (Ogun), Agbah Ebelechukwu (Delta), Didih Omolola Onome (Lagos), Lawal Rafiatu Folashade (Oyo), Olarinoye Adijat Adenike (Lagos), Ayodele Ruth (Oyo), Yusuf Islamiyat Adebukola (Osun), Liadi Taiwo (Oyo), Eze Joy Ogbonne (Delta), Osijo Mary Taiwo (Oyo) and Anyimba Adamme Dorcas (Kano)

    While the 12 men invited to camp are: John Solomon (FCT), King Kalu (Cross River), Agboro Favour Omovigbo (Bayelsa), Appah Emmanuel Inemo (Bayelsa), Opadeji Adedapo Adeleke (Lagos), Umoafia Edidiong Joseph (Akwa Ibom), Akano Desmond (Delta), Anyalewechi Michael Chinemerem (Abia), Inspector Seldum Mamdum (FCT), Adeyemi Abayomi Vincent (Bayelsa), Barde Patrick Olawale (Bayelsa), and Joseph Lucky (Bayelsa)

    They are being supervised under the consortium of coaches which include: Nwadei Christopher (Kogi), Ajei Emeka Godson (Delta), Okuofoh Evelyn (Edo), Lawal Patience (Kwara), Kehinde Ayodapo (Oyo) and Louis Okoro (Osun).

    Nigeria will present 12 Weightlifters at the African Games make up of six men and six women in their categories.

    The President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr. Abdul Ibrahim said he is thrilled with the level of preparations of the Weightlifters and he is looking forward to a fantastic performance at the African Games.

    He said the NWF in conjunction with the Sports Ministry will ensure the Weightlifters are well motivated to do Nigerians proud in Ghana.

    “I want to say I am okay with the level of their preparations even though it could be better. The Weightlifters are making use of the facilities at their disposal and are raring to go,” Dr Abdul told our correspondent. “We are looking forward to a good outing in Ghana. We are certain the players are in high spirits and the sports ministry with the NWF are ready to motivate them to perform to their optimum in Ghana.”

    Akano fancies more Nigerian weightlifters for Paris 2024

    Nigeria’s Weightlifter in the 89kg Desmond Akano has hinted that with  concerted efforts, the country will have some lifters  at next year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France.

    With the support of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) led by Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, the Nigerian weightlifters have taken part in some  of the qualifying tournament for the Olympics.

    Akano who finished in a disappointing 22nd  position with 145Kg lift in the snatch and 193kg in the clean and jerk, said the country’s weightlifters are  headed for the right direction with the support of the NWF.

    He also solicited  support of  corporate bodies to  aid  the NWF and the players so that they can realize their Paris 2024  dreams.

    Akano who narrowly missed medal by the whiskers at the African Senior Weightlifting Championships in Tunisia in May, stated that he was not satisfied with his performance in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and will work harder in subsequent competitions.

    “I won’t say I am happy with my performance. I will just say that there were some factors that hindered my performance but I promise to do well in upcoming competitions,” he said.

    “It wasn’t a good performance but the championship exposed me to so many things that I hope to improve on if I have the chance to travel again.”
