    Welder declared missing

    A 31- year old man, Alfa Riwanullah Abiodun Onasoga, has been declared missing.

    A welder by profession, Alfa Rilwanullah was last seen at about 1p.m. on Wednesday, November 6, at Idobi Motor Park, around NTA, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State after receiving a phone call from somebody who invited him to come and inspect a welding job.

  • Labourers, welder arraigned for alleged robbery

    The police yesterday arraigned two labourers and a welder at an FCT High Court, Maitama, Abuja, for alleged robbery.

    The prosecution alleged that the defendants – Kudu Salisu, 44, Godwin Itueon, 22 and Andrew Ochai Onazi, 26, allegedly robbed Anchor Supermarket, opposite CBN Quarters, Karu, Abuja.

    They were arraigned before Justice Mariam Anenih on a two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery.

    The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Kufreabasi Ebong, told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offences on September 5, 2017, about 2 am.

    He alleged that the defendants robbed Michael Ezeala and one other at gunpoint.

    Ebong alleged that the defendants stole two Techno phones, three plasma TV sets, a CCTV recorder, clothes, shoes, caps and N890,000.

    The prosecutor said the offences were punishable under sections 6 and 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act 2004.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Counsel to the defendants, Messrs. Peter Oche and Patrick Akpogwu, urged the court to grant their clients bail.

    Justice Anenih declined to grant the bail, ordering the defendants to be remanded in prison.

    He adjourned the matter till April 5 for further hearing.

    •’Hunger made me do it’

    A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, at Aso Pada, Nasarawa State, yesterday sentenced a 23-year-old welder, Usman Abubakar, to 18 months for stealing a bag of gari.

    Abubakar, of Shopping Centre, Mararaba, was sentenced on a one count charge of theft.

    The judge, Mr. Albert Maga, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

    The convict said hunger led him to the crime.

    “It was hunger that led me to do it. I have stayed without food for days and I needed money to buy food.

    “Have mercy on me. I promise never to do it again,’’ he pleaded.

    The judge, however, gave the convict an option of paying N5,000 fine.

    The prosecutor, Agabi Auta, told the court Anjenu John, of Aku, Mararaba, reported the matter at ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters, Mararaba on August 25.

    He said: “The defendant went into the complainant’s shop, at Darika Jummat, Mosque, Mararaba, and stole a bag of gari, valued at N15,000.

    Auta added that the defendant was about stealing the gari when he was apprehended by the complainant and handed over to the police.

    He said the defendant later confessed to stealing the item, to sell it and get money to buy food.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    Welder jailed five years for dealing in cocaine

    A welder, Shola Adeitan, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to dealing in cocaine.

    Justice Mohammed Idris of the Lagos Federal High Court sentenced the 32-year-old following his guilty plea.

    The father of one said he joined cocaine business when his welding business suffered due to lacks of jobs.

    He added that a friend introduced him into the illicit trade.

    He pleaded for forgiveness.

    The judge also jailed a 37-year-old trader, Bello Adam, for two years after he also pleaded guilty to dealing in marijuana.

    The National Drugs Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) prosecutor Jerry Aernan said Adeitan was arrested on April 18 at Aguda in Surulere with eight grammes of cocaine.

    He said Bello was arrested on April 13 at Eleganza Plaza, Apapa, with 700 grammes of marijuana, popularly called Indian hemps.

    Bello, an indigene of Kaduna State, said he started smoking hemp to quench the stench emitting from waste bins where he scavenges for materials that he sold to recyclers.

    Welder allegedly kills farmer in Kwara

    A welder, Segun Bamidele, at the weekend allegedly killed a farmer, Sunday Owolabi, on his farm at Rore in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

    It was gathered that Bamidele severed Owolabi’s head and attempted to sell it.

    According to a source, Owolabi went to his farm on Saturday but never returned. His relatives got worried and a search was conducted. His headless body was discovered the next day on his farm.

    “The suspect tried to sell the severed head to Aliyu, who turned him down. Aliyu reported to a community leader, who informed the village head.

    “Upon interrogation, Bamidele confessed to have acted under the influence of alcohol.”

    It was gathered that the case was reported at the Omu-Aran police division, which led to Bamidele’s arrest.

    Police spokesman Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the incident. He said the suspect was arrested and was being interrogated at the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

    The police have arrested a welder and a guard for the alleged theft of cable wires and a generator worth N1,750,000 belonging to Eko Atlantic Project.

    Adegbola Olalekan, 37, a welder from Yewa South in Ogun State and Tajudeen Salawudeen, 34, a guard from Ibadan, Oyo State, were employed by South Energy Ltd to work on the Eko Atlantic Project site on Victoria Island, Lagos.

    The Nation learnt that on April 8, Eko Atlantic security officials received a report that thieves were burning some of the company’s cable wires somewhere on the project site in a bid to extract copper.

    When the officials got there, they found smouldering remains of cables some of which the thieves had fled with along with a generator.

    Olalekan and Salawudeen were arraigned yesterday before Mrs. F. F. George of an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Police Inspector Ingobo Emby said the offence was committed around 8:40am on April 8 at Eko Atlantic Project site at the Bar Beach on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island.

    “On the same date, time and place, they did steal one Elepaq generating set valued at N75,000 and 400 metres of cable wire valued at N1 million. The total value is N1,750,000, property of Eko Atlantic Project,” he added.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty and granted N100,000 bail, with two sureties each in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till April 25.

    The matter was reported to the police and after investigation; Olalekan and Salawudeen were arrested and arraigned yesterday before Mrs. F. F. George of an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    They are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Police Inspector Ingobo Emby said the alleged offences were committed at about 8:40am on April 8 at Eko Atlantic Project site, Bar Beach, Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island.

    The offences, the prosecutor said, contravened Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty and were admitted to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in the like sum, one of whom must be a family member.

    The case was adjourned till April 25, for mention.

  • Welder ‘rapes’ expectant mother

    A welder, Monday Maule has been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly raping an expectant mother.  The woman was said to be eight months pregnant when the incident occurred.

    The 25-year old defendant, who resides at Friends’ Colony in Agungi,  Lekki, said to have committed the offence punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011, on February 23, about 4:30am.

    Prosecuting police Sergeant Daniel Ighodalo told Magistrate Olaitan Ajayi that the defendant committed the crime while the victim, his neighbour, was asleep.

    He said the defendant unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the 23-year old mother of four while her husband was away.

    According to the prosecutor, the victim slept without locking her door and woke up when she felt pains on her face and private part.

    He said she was dizzy and unable to fight the defendant due to her condition, but raised the alarm which led to the defendant’s arrest.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Ighodalo urged the court to remand the defendant in prison because of the seriousness of the offence.

    Magistrate Ajayi granted him N250, 000 bail with two responsible sureties in the like sum.

    He adjourned the matter to March 23.

    The magistrate ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
