    Arsenal mull move to Wembley

Arsenal have held internal discussions about expanding the capacity of Emirates Stadium.

The talks are still at an early stage with no favoured plan on how to move forward decided yet, but the possibility of home matches being played at Wembley Stadium if work was to take place has been discussed.

The Gunners played Champions League matches at the old Wembley Stadium in both the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons.

Rivals Tottenham played Champions League matches at the current Wembley in 2016-17, before playing all of their ‘home’ fixtures at Wembley in 2017-18 and most of 2018-19 while their new stadium was completed.

Next year will mark 20 years since the Gunners moved to the Emirates from Highbury.

It is understood talks have involved the possibility of changing the seating plan in order to add thousands of seats as the Gunners look to keep pace with the largest stadiums in the country.

With a capacity of 60,704, Arsenal have the fifth-largest stadium among English football clubs.

Manchester United’s Old Trafford is the biggest ground with a capacity of 74,879, while Tottenham’s home is second (62,850), West Ham (62,500) third and Liverpool (61,276) fourth.

Silence in Wembley for Israel-Gaza victims – English FA

A period of silence will be held before England’s game with Australia for “the innocent victims of the devastating events in Israel and Palestine”.

The Football Association also said players would wear black armbands for the match at Wembley on Friday.

More than 1,200 people have been killed after Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a series of attacks on Israel.

Israel then launched air strikes on Gaza and stopped food, water, fuel and medicine going into the territory.

More than 1,300 people have been killed in Gaza since the retaliatory strikes, with 338,000 displaced.

“On Friday evening, we will remember the innocent victims of the devastating events in Israel and Palestine,” the FA said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with them, and their families and friends in England and Australia and with all the communities who are affected by this ongoing conflict.

“We stand for humanity and an end to the death, violence, fear and suffering.”

It said only “flags, replica kits and other representations of nationality for competing nations” would be allowed inside Wembley for the match against Australia and Tuesday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy.

A Football Australia spokesperson told BBC Sport: “The English Football Association consulted with Football Australia on their proposed plans and public statement, which we are aligned on.”

The English FA statement did not include mention of the Wembley arch.

BBC Sport reported on Wednesday that the governing body was unlikely to illuminate the arch in the colours of the Israel flag because of fears of a backlash from some communities.

Senior officials at the FA were understood to be wary of a perception they might be taking sides in the Middle East conflict.

Former FA chairman David Bernstein, who is Jewish, has said he is “deeply disappointed” but “not at all surprised” at the decision not to light the arch in the colours of the Israel flag.

Speaking to Jewish News, Bernstein added: “It is a tardy reaction to the horrors in Israel. This is a continuation of the double standards that football has shown in dealing with recent tragedies.”

  • Tottenham to play all Champions League group matches at Wembley

Tottenham Hotspur will play all their Champions’ League group matches at Wembley as they wait to move into their new stadium, the Premier League club said on Monday.

Spurs were initially scheduled to play their first game at the new 62,000-capacity White Hart Lane venue on Sept. 15 against Liverpool.

However, safety issues meant they switched the game along with the next home fixture to Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will now host Barcelona (Oct. 3), PSV Eindhoven (Nov. 6) and Inter Milan (Nov. 28) in Group B at Wembley, where they played their home matches last season.

Spurs will also entertain Manchester City in the Premier League at the national stadium on Oct. 29.

The match was originally due to take place on Oct. 28, but with Wembley hosting a National Football League game between Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars, a new date was agreed.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said the club was doing everything to deliver the new stadium in the shortest possible time.

“Amongst the consequences of the delay have been substantial additional costs, not least of which is the need for alternative venue hires,” Levy said in a statement.

“Mauricio, his staff and the players, have been exceptional in their support and fully embraced the changes of venue with total positivity. They have my utmost respect.

“As soon as we have confidence in our project managers’ and contractors’ ability to deliver against the revised schedule of works, we shall be able to issue dates for test,” Levy said.

  • Wembley Show: This Eagles can fly but….

It will be safe to say that the first half of the encounter at the Wembley was an all England affair.

Early goal in the 7th minute by Cahill flagged off what could best be described as minutes of agony for the Nigerians.

Only two shots on target was all the Eagles could record in the entire first half. England captain Harry Kane must be a happy man as he increased the goal tally to compound Eagles woes. Very early in the match former international Jonathan Akpoborie noted that the scenario was not looking good.  Kenneth Uzoho conceded cheap goal especially the second goal by  England Captain, Harry Kane.

“Defenders make mistakes, that’s why goalkeepers are there, but at this level, if you can’t save that Harry Kane’s goal, then you have no business there” he had said shortly after Kane’s goal but again in fairness to Uzoho he also saved a few ugly situations that would have left Eagles down by four goals at the end of first half.

The rate at which Dele Alli, Sterling and Lingard were having a good run into the defence is one that must be checked. No doubt the Nigerian side was nervous in the first half and it showed.

But then 47th minute goal by Alex Iwobi became a ginger and the tunic even the Nigerian teeming fans were waiting for to come alive and it was singing from then all the way.

But Iwobi’s strike did not really come as a surprise he appeared in the first half to be the most confident on the Eagles side on the pitch.  At 57 minutes the match appeared more balanced the Lions were no longer having a field day. The second half was more purposeful for Eagles.

Mikel’s shot on target in the 69th minute was really goal bound. The commentators and analysts agree that there was better contest in the second half.  The bottom line is, with a little touch here and there, the Eagles can hold their own but must aim to come to the party early.

In a real world cup situation allowing over dominance in the first half only to hope to make amends in the seconds may not guarantee fantastic result.

Come to think of it why how come Eagles appear to be bumping on each other especially while going for aerial balls? Are they finding their new and impressive jersey hard to recognise?  The Eagles lost the match 2-1 but this looks more like a more respectable score line, many were scared it would have been more than that.

The changes made by Coach Rohr had instant impact which implies that he knows the team and is likely to get it right going forward.

  • Eagles on a table-turning mission at Wembley

All roads will lead to the Wembley Stadium Saturday, June 2nd as Super Eagles of Nigeria take on the Three Lions of England in a high profile friendly ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

Although it has been dubbed a friendly, the tie indeed goes beyond being a friendly as there are so many things to look out for and in fact records to be made and broken.  Both teams are heading to the world cup with intent to overcome challenges posed by opponents and if possible lift the trophy.  While The Three Lions can beat their chest and say yes we have lifted the trophy before thanks to their 1966 triumph, the Eagles are yet to lift the trophy but have never ruled out the possibility of doing so either in Russia or in the near future. This is the second time the Eagles will be facing the Lions at the same venue.

Twenty four years ago the Eagles faced the lions.  The first was on November 16, 1994. While the lions then was led by Terry Venables the

Eagles was then led by late Shuaibu Amodu, with the Lions having the last laugh running away with a lone goal victory.

Records available also show that no African country has beaten England which means that Saturday’s encounter for Eagles is not just about assessing the team’s readiness for the world cup but also an opportunity for the Gernot Rohr tutored side to turn the table against the Lions.

Can the Eagles do that for themselves, for Nigeria and for Africa?

Some say there is luck in football others say there is nothing like luck but just just technical knowhow that determines everything.  For this second school of thought Eagles and other African countries that have lost to the Three lions did so because they are not as technically sound as the Three lions. But can Lady Luck play a role Saturday and propel Eagles to carry the day.  Interestingly Eagles current jersey that has been dubbed the best among the 32 countries heading to Russia, and which has become a must have among fans, has striking resemblance with the jersey worn by the 1994 Eagles that put up a good show at the World cup in USA.

Can the jersey garnish Eagles effort with good luck so that they can sing victory song in Wembley and then follow up with good outing in Russia?

The present Eagles squad is considered young, agile and youthful; will this be an advantage at Wembley and also in Russia? Both John Obi Mikel who will wear the Captain’s band to lead Eagles and Harry Kane who will be leading the Lions are determined duo and are eager to leave a mark on the sand of history. Mikel at the moment though in China played in England just like Tottentham forward Harry Kane. They both know what is at stake.  It will however be different stroke for the two captains.  While Kane will be hoping to maintain the unbeaten record Mikel will be hoping to be the arrow head that will lead Eagles to break the jinx.

The big question therefore will be who will sing the victory song at Wembley?

  • Wembley Friendly: Fans chase Eagles Jersey with N32,000

Super Eagles friendly against Three Lions of England tomorrow at Wembley might as well be a peep into what the a typical outing for both teams would be in Russia.

Both teams are seeking to shine at the World cup and the friendly is an opportunity for Coach Gernot Rohr and England coach Gareth Southgate to properly assess their teams’ readiness for the world Cup.

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel will square up against his England counterpart Harry Kane who was handed the responsibility of leading the three lions recently.

Super Eagles fans both home and abroad are eager to watch the team take on England at Wembley as it is hoped that the performance at Wembley will reveal in clearer terms how well the team can play in Russia.

The fairwell match against DR Congo which ended 1-1 in Port Harcourt is considered not too good as an assessment for the team considering complaints over the state of the pitch.

London based fans of the team are already making frantic effort to acquire the team’s new jersey with intent to wear it to the friendly match billed for 6.15pm in Nigeria.

The Dailymail in London this morning dished out long queue of fans of the Gernot Rohr tutored side waiting patiently to acquire the jersey.

The jersey reportedly goes for £65 (about N32,000) even as some fans in Nigeria have revealed while contributing to sports programs on Radio that the selling price is N40,000.  While some say it is too high considering that the minimum wage in the country is N18,000 others say is at par with the price of most standard clubs especially in the English premiership

  • English players are masters of diving, Wenger says

English players are masters of diving, Wenger says

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger weighed into the debate about simulation in the English Premier League on Thursday by suggesting that English players may have become “the masters of diving”.

Wenger made the statement ahead of the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, and was speaking as the fallout continued from last weekend’s 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Spurs.

During the match, Tottenham’s Dele Alli was booked for diving and Harry Kane was accused of falling too easily to win a penalty kick under a challenge from goalkeeper Loris Karius.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino had defended his players by saying part of football is about “tricking the opponent’’.

However, Wenger believes those comments have been blown out of proportion, saying simulation was an increasing problem.

“We have to get the diving out of the game,” the Frenchman told a news conference on Thursday.

“I remember there were tremendous cases here when foreign players did it, but I must say the English players have learned very quickly and they might even be the masters now.”

Alli has been particularly criticised after receiving his third caution for simulation.

Wenger did not name the England midfielder but said there is a fine line between what is legal and what is not.

“I don’t encourage my players to dive. But sometimes you want your players to be intelligent. They have played a little bit with the rules, they make more of it on the penalty kick case,” he said.

“Every striker will do that. They extend a little bit of the rules. How far can you go? That is down to the referees and I think that sometimes, at normal speed, it is very difficult to determine.”

Wenger will decide on Friday whether to play Petr Cech or David Ospina in goal as the Czech continues to recover from a calf injury.

The injury led to his substitution in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Everton.

“Cech or Ospina, I will make that decision tomorrow,” said Wenger. “Petr Cech has not practiced, but I will not take any risk if he is not 100 per cent fit.”

The Frenchman also hopes to have Nacho Monreal and Danny Welbeck available for the game.

It is the first time Wenger has taken Arsenal to play Spurs at Wembley, a ground where the Gunners traditionally thrive, winning the FA Cup final in 2014, 2015 and 2017.

“We feel we have a good level of performance at Wembley. It gives you a good pitch to allow you to play the way you want to,” said Wenger.

The Arsenal manager will face Spurs for the 52nd time in his 22 years as Arsenal manager.

  • Tottenham win over Manchester United in front of record crowd

Tottenham win over Manchester United in front of record crowd

Tottenham Hotspur solidified their top- four credentials with a dominant 2-0 win over Manchester United in front of an English Premier League record crowd at Wembley on Wednesday.

Christian Eriksen gave the hosts the lead after 11 seconds, the second fastest goal in Premier League history.

Manchester United’s woeful defending was exposed again for Tottenham’s second, with Phil Jones turning the ball into his own net after 27 minutes.

The win lifted Tottenham two points behind third-placed Liverpool and Chelsea in fourth as second-placed Manchester United dropped 15 points behind leaders Manchester City.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking after the match, praised his players for putting up a fantastic performance.

He added that the result had put his team in a good position for a top four finish.

“It’s a fantastic dressing room after a fantastic performance. The performance was great and I congratulate the players because they deserve all the credit.

“The first goal was a fantastic goal. Christian Eriksen believed that it would arrive in this situation. We tell the young players to always anticipate.

“I am so pleased we are in the race for the top four.

“There’s a lot of games to play and that is why we need to stay focused.

“The early goal for us was good so that we can go on and dominate the game. That goal gave us more confidence and belief.

“Dele Alli was very good today, but all the team was great. The quality of performance was fantastic.

“It’ll be tough against Liverpool now because they are one of the best teams — but it’s about taking it one game at a time.”

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, on his part, said the goals scored against his side were ridiculous.

“It’s a performance that starts with a ridiculous goal. That goal after a few seconds has a big influence in the game because Tottenham can play the way they like to play.

“In the end, we played against a very good team. Both goals were ridiculous goals.

“The first goal is an accumulation of mistakes in spite of the fact that everything happened so fast. My players have watched the Tottenham kick-off many, many times.

“It was a really, really bad goal. After the first goal the team had a good reaction — we were there and tried to create.

“The second goal mentally kills the team. A team to win matches needs to score goals and also defend well — on this occasion we were very bad.’’

Recurring injuries: Michu retires @ 31

Ex-Swansea striker Michu has retired from football aged 31 due to ongoing injury problems.

Michu enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign in 2012/13 for Swansea after joining from Rayo Vallecano for £2million and quickly became a fan favourite at the Liberty.

He netted 22 times in all competitions that year and helped Swansea to success in the League Cup – scoring in the 5-0 victory over Bradford in the final at Wembley.

His form saw him earn a call-up to the Spanish national team where he won his sole cap by starting in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Belarus.

Michu struggled with injuries in his second year with the Welsh club and was sent on loan to Serie A side Napoli for the 2014-15 season, making just six appearances.

After his release from Swansea he joined Spanish fourth division side Langreo before returning to his hometown club Real Oviedo, where he played last year.

Michu had one year remaining on his contract with boyhood side Real Oviedo but has decided not to return for the 2017/18 campaign.

Swansea’s official Twitter account posted a video montage in tribute to their former player with the message: ‘We are sad to hear Michu has retired from football… Thanks for some fantastic memories’.

Michu will now consider taking up a role at Oviedo as a coach or director, according to Spanish newspaper La Nueva Espana.

The 31-year-old was born in Oviedo and came through the club’s youth system before progressing to their first team.

Michu was among a group of former Oviedo players, which included Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla and Manchester United’s Juan Mata, to buy shares in the club to help them stay afloat amid financial problems in 2012.

McGregor poses with son and fleet of Rolls Royces

Conor McGregor has delivered another reminder of his extravagant lifestyle by posting a photo of himself in front of a collection of Rolls Royces.

McGregor took to Instagram to post the snap of the three Rolls Royces while dressed in the outlandish outfit he wore to his New York press conference on Thursday.

The Irish fighter identified each model in the caption accompanying the post, which read: ‘The Wraith, the drop top Dawn and the GHOST!’.

The total retail cost of the Ghost, the Wraith and the Dawn is in the region of £750,000 and McGregor posed in front of the cars at a garage in New York.

He later documented a trip through the city at night time in one of the sports cars with the caption: ‘The Mac Life’ in another insight into his glamorous lifestyle.

His upcoming opponent Floyd Mayweather is also not adverse to flaunting his lifestyle. The American wore an incredible £1million diamond-encrusted Hublot watch for the last stop on the promotional tour in London.

McGregor also displayed his softer side to Instagram by lifting his baby son Conor Jack up to the sky on an airport runway in Las Vegas.

The MMA superstar has just concluded his four-day promotional tour with Mayweather in the build up to their fight in Las Vegas on August 26.

The tour’s final stop was at Wembley on Friday, following trips to Los Angeles, Toronto and New York.

McGregor labelled Mayweather a ‘stupid, baldy t***’ in a heated exchange between the fighters, while the American hit back with a homophobic insult.

The bout will be McGregor’s first ever as a professional boxer – in contrast Mayweather’s record stands at an undefeated 49-0.
