West Brom sweat over injuries after Southampton defeat

West Bromwich Albion defenders Jonny Evans, Craig Dawson and midfielder Gareth Barry will undergo scans this week after sustaining injuries during last Saturday’s 0-1 loss to Southampton in the English Premier League.

Team captain Evans was taken off with a groin problem while Barry was withdrawn early in the second half due to a back strain.

However, manager Tony Pulis is most concerned about Dawson, who has sustained a knee injury.

“I’ve been at the club nearly three years and it’s seemed like we’ve rarely had an injury.

“But now we’ve got these problems, and also Oliver (Burke), James Morrison and Hal (Robson-Kanu) back at home as well,” Pulis told the club’s website (www.wba.co.uk)

Pulis said all three players will be assessed ahead of 13th-placed West Brom’s match against league leaders Manchester City on Saturday.

Lacazette Scores Brace over West Brom at Emirates

New signing Alexandre Lacazette scored twice as Arsenal beat West Brom at the Emirates on Monday night On an evening when Alexis Sanchez, widely expected to leave at the season’s end when his contract expires, made his first league start since his attempt to join rivals Manchester City, the striker continued to justify his club-record transfer fee.

Spoiling the occasion of Gareth Barry’s record 633rd Premier League appearance, his two goals also ensured a continuation of Arsenal’s 100 percent record at the Emirates so far this season and wider run of eight consecutive home league wins.

In only the fifth minute, having been brought down by Craig Dawson on the edge of the area, Sanchez bent a free kick just wide of the right post.

The visitors swiftly responded when a classy through-ball from Barry sent Jay Rodriguez into space on the left. The forward was unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty when brought down by Shkodran Mustafi’s cumbersome challenge, but after returning to his feet he forced Petr Cech into a fine save when the goalkeeper tipped his low shot onto the post.

Mohamed Elneny, starting his first Premier League fixture since the season’s opening day in perhaps a demonstration of Arsene Wenger’s wariness of West Brom’s physical threat, then briefly took responsibility for Arsenal’s creativity. His ball wide was volleyed by Hector Bellerin towards Aaron Ramsey, who despite space at the near post could only head high and wide.

The midfielder was then brought down by Jonny Evans, among Wenger’s summer transfer targets, also on the edge of the area, to win the 20th-minute free-kick that produced their opening goal. On this occasion Ben Foster tipped Sanchez’s curling effort away, but with the goalkeeper on the floor, Lacazette was the quickest to respond and instinctively headed low into the near open goal.

West Brom, largely outclassed by their composed hosts, were unfortunate not to level in the 38th minute, again through Rodriguez. After Grzegorz Krychowiak broke down the left and hooked a cross towards the forward, Rodriguez succeeded in heading past Cech but could only watch as the recovering Nacho Monreal cleared off the goal-line and out for a corner.

The £52million Lacazette had had another dangerous, goal-bound shot blocked early in the second half before, in the 67th minute, the opportunity presented itself to him to seal all three points.

Allan Nyom clumsily brought down Ramsey inside the area and, with Sanchez still on the pitch, Lacazette stepped up to finish into the bottom-right corner beyond the diving Foster.

He was eventually replaced by Olivier Giroud in the 83rd minute, by which point victory appeared secure, but after Arsenal’s inconsistent start to the season the striker had taken his side up to seventh, with his fourth goal in five league starts.

Defeat also meant West Brom fell to 12th, but if Tony Pulis felt frustrated, Wenger had been rewarded by the 26-year-old Lacazette vindicating the hosts’ long-term pursuit

West Brom dent Arsenal’s top-four hopes

Arsenal on Saturday suffered a fourth defeat in five league games as Craig Dawson’s double helped West Brom inflict a major blow to the Gunners’ hopes of a top-four finish.

Dawson capitalised on some awful defending from the Gunners to head both of his goals from corners – the first to give the Baggies the lead, the second to seal their win.

Arsenal had initially rallied after falling behind, levelling through Alexis Sanchez’s close-range finish – the Chilean forward’s 18th league goal of the season.

However, they fell behind again 10 minutes into the second half when substitute Hal Robson-Kanu rolled the ball home with only his second touch after coming on.

Arsenal, who lost goalkeeper Petr Cech to injury, were outfought and unable to rally a second time, their challenge wilting soon after Danny Welbeck’s header from a corner struck the crossbar.

It was an eventful encounter, both on the pitch and above it as two planes pulling banners – one pro-Arsene Wenger and the other against the Arsenal boss – made circles around The Hawthorns.

It was the anti-Wenger camp who were most present and vocal by the end, though, holding aloft banners declaring “Enough is enough’’ and booing their beleaguered manager’s decision to substitute Sanchez, who had picked up a knock.

Wenger’s future beyond the end of this season remains unknown, but the facts are these – Arsenal trail fourth place by five points (albeit with a game in hand).

They must arrest a run that has seen them win just one of their last five league games if they are to continue their proud record of finishing in the top four in each of Wenger’s 20 seasons at the club so far.

After claiming a top-two finish in every season between 1997-98 and 2004-05, Arsenal have often flirted with fifth or worse since.

However, this is looking increasingly likely to be the campaign when they drop below the division’s premier quartet. (NAN)

  • West Brom ready to sign John Terry

West Brom ready to sign John Terry

John Terry could be thrown a Premier League lifeline by Tony Pulis after the West Brom boss confirmed he was keen to sign the defender ahead of next season.

The centre-back’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the conclusion of the campaign and he is unlikely to be offered a new deal after losing his starting berth under Antonio Conte.

West Brom already made an enquiry over Terry’s availability in January, but were told the 36-year-old was not interested in leaving Chelsea halfway through the season.

However, Pulis has made it clear West Brom are ready to give it another try come June.

“From what I could gather in January he wanted to stay with Chelsea and be part of going out as a champion,” Pulis told reporters.

“If he becomes available in the summer we will sit down and have a little think about what we have got and what we have not got.

“And we will take it from there.”

Terry has made just five Premier League appearances this term and has not featured in the English top flight since the 5-0 win over Everton back in November.

West Brom reject Tianjin £32m offer for Rondon

Tianjin Quanjian made a £32million offer for Salomon Rondon but West Brom said he was not for sale in this window at any price.

The Chinese Super League club have only just secured the signing of Alexandre Pato for £15.5million but are clearly keen on further attacking options.

Rondon has been one of Tony Pulis’ star performers so far this campaign and West Brom’s main attacking threat.

The powerful target main is ideally suited to his club’s style of play and the side from the midlands are thriving this season.

Given the comfortable position in the Premier League table, West Brom are in no hurry to sell at this point in the campaign.

With the current trend of big money deals to China, particularly involving players from South America, Rondon is unsurprisingly a target.

Tianjin Quanjian already boast the likes of Axel Witsel and now Pato on their books but it seems this time they will not get their man.

West Brom will expect their striker to star once more as they travel to face Middlesbrough in their next game on Tuesday.

WEST BROM TRANSFER Ighalo to replace Berahino if …

West Bromwich Albion will sign Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo if they were able to finally offload Saido Berahino, according to latest reports out of England.

Ighalo, 27, has been linked with a 17 million pounds switch from Watford to West Brom, but Sky Sports sources now say that will depend on if the Midlands club were able to sell unsettled Berahino. Berahino’s latest suitors are Stoke City.

West Brom are in talks with Watford, who are believed to be asking for 17 million pounds for Ighalo. Ighalo could hope to resurrect a rather wretched season with a move to The Hawthorns.

He has only netted twice in all competitions this season after rattling in 17 goals last season. He has also been linked to a big-money transfer to China.

  • Livermore seals £10m move to West Brom

Livermore seals £10m move to West Brom

Jake Livermore has become West Brom’s first signing of the January transfer window after joining from Hull in a £10million deal.

The former Tottenham midfielder, who moved to the KCOM Stadium permanently in 2014, has signed a four-and-a-half year contract.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis believes Livermore has the skill, energy and character to become a success at The Hawthorns.

‘We’re very pleased. Obviously in this window we’ve lost Callum (McManaman) and Craig (Gardner) so to bring a player in was important for us and obviously we’re very pleased to get Jake,’ Pulis said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

‘We think he’ll be a very good addition to the squad and the team.

‘He’s had a really good background with Tottenham, did very well there and actually got an England cap which I think some people have forgotten, and then having gone to Hull he had the tragedy (the death of his new-born son) that followed him around there which he’s now over.

‘We played him twice this season and he was exceptional in both games. At the age of just 27 we think it’s a really good signing.’

Livermore escaped a drugs ban after testing positive for cocaine as he tried to deal with the death of his son in 2015.

Asked whether signing the midfielder was a gamble, Pulis replied: ‘No not really, he’s a solid kid. He’s had things that have happened in his life that have been very unfortunate and he’s bounced back.

Livermore, who completed his medical on Thursday night, won one cap for England in 2012, but Pulis believes the midfielder’s best years are ahead of him.

He made 21 Premier League appearances for the Tigers this season, scoring once.

  • Iheanacho earns £15k weekly not £85,000

Iheanacho earns £15k weekly not £85,000

Contrary to wide spread speculations that Super Eagles sensation Kelechi Iheanacho currently earns £85,000-per-week at Manchester City, a very close source to the player have exclusively revealed to SportingLife that the 20-year-old receives just £15,000 weekly.

The former Nigeria youth international joined the Citizens in 2013 following a very successive campaign at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup where he emerged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, scoring six and assisting a seven times.

Unsurprisingly, he broke into the City first team in the 2015/16 season after a mesmerising pre-season and made a huge impact with eight premier league goals in his debut season and scored the goal that sealed qualification for the UEFA Champions League for his team.

He has already scored three goals with three assists this campaign and was rewarded for his form by new manager Pep Guardiola with a deal that will see him stay at the club until 2021. Financial details of the deal was not officially made public but reports have it that the Nigerian was given a pay rise from £15,000-per-week to a whopping £85,000 which makes him the highest paid Super Eagles player.

Speaking with SportingLife, the source claimed: “Iheanacho is still receiving £15,000 at Manchester City and not the £85,000-per-week that is celebrated everywhere in the media.

“It is true that he penned a new deal with the club earlier this season with an increased wage of £85,000 weekly but he has a clause that prevents him from actually earning that account for now. So, the club still pays him £15,000-per-week.

“Iheanacho is a special player and well respected at the club and in due time I am very confident that they will honour him what he truly deserves.”

Iheanacho has been an unused substitute in Manchester City’s last two games – against West Brom in the premier league and Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League and in both matches Pep Guardiola’s men won, scoring seven goals and conceding just one.

  • Ideye to leave West Brom after £15m Rondon’s capture

Ideye to leave West Brom after £15m Rondon’s capture

    • Nigerian available for £6m

English Premier League club, West Bromwich Albion are in advanced talks to sign Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon in a club-record £15million deal from Russian Champions, Zenit St. Petersburg.

Former Stoke City coach, Tony Pulis identified Rondon, 25, as a primary attacking target and the player’s agent was at the club’s training ground on Friday to finalise terms.

This means Nigeria and Baggies forward, Brown Ideye’s departure at the Hawthron is imminent, and it emerged that West Brom may allow the former Dynamo Kiyv forward to leave and he’s a top target for Turkish side, Trabzonspor.

Rondon scored 20 goals in 37 league games for Zenit St Petersburg last season and, at 6ft 3in, will provide a physical threat at centre-forward.

Rondon, who has 13 goals in 39 games for his country, was expected to have a medical on Saturday and would be West Brom’s second club-record signing in a successive summer windows, having brought in Brown Ideye for £10m last year.

West Brom may be open to letting Ideye go should a fee of around £6m be submitted for the Nigerian.

Trabzonspor are still keeping close tabs on West Brom’s record signing Brown Ideye. The Baggies splashed out £10m to land the striker from Dynamo Kiev but he has struggled to settle at the Hawthorns.

Ideye scored just two goals in his first 17 appearances for the club but did finish the season more strongly following the arrival of manager Tony Pulis on New Year’s Day.

The Nigerian bagged four goals in Pulis’ first eight games in charge and ended the season with seven goals in all competitions.

Another West Brom striker, Saido Berahino, is the subject of intense summer speculation but, according to reports in Turkey, Ideye is now too a wanted man.

Trabzonspor are after a new strike partner for the evergreen Oscar Cardozo and reckon 26-year-old Ideye could fit the bill.

  • Anichebe can keep West Brom up, says Brunt

Anichebe can keep West Brom up, says Brunt

West Brom ace Chris Brunt believes a fully-fit Victor Anichebe will be a key player for West Brom in their quest to survive relegation at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old Nigeria striker scored his second league goal of the season against QPR last weekend after coming off the bench, although he could do little to prevent ‘The Baggies’ slipping to a disappointing 4-1 defeat in the hands of QPR.

Anichebe has struggled to find his best form since joining the Baggies from Everton due to series of niggling injuries.

However, his team mate, Brunt said he believes he can use the QPR goal as a springboard to fire more for Tony Pulis’ side between now and the end of the season.

“He is an important player when he’s fit,” Brunt said.

“We saw him come on at half-time on Saturday and he showed what he can do.

“Hopefully, if we can keep him fit between now and the end of the season he can have a big impact for us.

“We saw the way he can play when he came on at the weekend so hopefully we can get him firing on all cylinders for the last six or seven games. Hopefully we can get a few goals and a few points from him.”

Anichebe has scored five goals in all competitions for West Brom this season.
